All Electromagnetic Signals Banned Including WiFi and Cellphones
ZortMcGort11 replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
Maybe they removed all the cell towers in that area, preventing phones from working anyways. What do they do then in emergencies, yell really loud? Fire a flare gun? -
Those 3d Realms (Apogee) games are great. My favorites are Cyrstal Caves, Secret Agent, and Paganitzu :-) Halloween Harry sort of reminds me of duke nukem, except with a jetpack, better graphics, and all those women that need to be rescued.

The Updated Mini List of Win98/ME Software
ZortMcGort11 replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I know :-) This is going to be a non KernelEx list. Just because it's simpler that way. And besides, there's already another thread / list of "KernelEx Compatible Programs." This is just my attempt to do a final, comprehensive overview of the state of Win9x programs. Which includes some older and newer programs, and when necessary lists the final version of certain programs. -

The Updated Mini List of Win98/ME Software
ZortMcGort11 replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well, that's a hard question. It depends. You can get around pretty good, especially by turning off javascript (most people don't want to do that though). But really, the only way to know is to try it and see how much you like it. Or I should say, how much functionality are you willing to lose? Turn off javacript and all those pop-up windows, ads, and other junk disappear. But then so do some other things :-/ Functionality wise, Opera 10.63 is your best option for plain Windows 9x. -

7-zip 9.20 works awesomly, forgot to add that to my list. Thanks :-) Never tried newer beta/alpha versions however. Not sure about the AVG definitions... very highly doubt it though, because AVG 7.5.524 was released early 2008. -

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
ZortMcGort11 replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Okay, I was *ALMOST* toying with the idea of revamping this entire list, slogging through all 36 pages... including the Mount Everest of stuff on page one. But, genealogy software? Updaters? CAD programs? Time Synchronisation utilities? Jeepers! Does anyone use that stuff? I'm not going to spend my time searching the web looking for the final version of an atomic clock that works on Windows 98!! LOL. After checking, a lot of those links (on page 1) are just obsolete. Also, when I tried to paste all the URL's onto notepad, half the addresss are truncated due to formatting, and therefore wouldn't work. I'd have to manually copy and paste each URL individually... and verify them... there's hundreds of them! Seriously. The only way to do this, would be to start over from scratch. I'm by no means suggesting getting rid of, or replacing this thread, but it's too big to edit at this point. Maybe if it was broken down into smaller chunks. One thread for Disc burning/ripping software. Another for, say, internet utilities: browsers, plugins, etc. Another thread for all sorts of anti-malware/virus tools. Another for Audio players/editors. Personally, I'd prefer to make the Picture Viewer, and MP3 Player, and Archiver/Zipper thread :-) Those are the software I use mostly. -
I love that Len song. Takes me back to 2000 or 1999 or whatever year that was :-) "L-A-T-E-R THAT WEEK!" do do do.

Have you ever attempted a blind shutdown?
ZortMcGort11 replied to ROTS's topic in General Discussion
I found that turning off javascript allows me to save images when right clicking on them is disabled. If that don't work, I hit the "prt scr" print screen key and paste the screen into Irfan view then crop the image. To shutdown blind on WinME it takes three keystrokes: Windows Key, letter "u", then Enter. Or if the computer is frozen, I use my big toe to flip the switch on that white plug-in strip on the floor. -
^that's pretty detailed :-)

Whatever "floats your boat"... I'm just curious. Humor me :-) Best sound/compression ratio.... Best file size/sound ratio.... Least amount of RAM required/best sound ratio... Which lossy format would you use for listening to songs on your computer? Would you use those same files for burning to CD? Keeping a collection of WAV or APE files on your hard drive consumes a lot of space, not to mention it takes a large amount of RAM to play them. On my computer it's not feasible to play APE files like I would MP3 for instance. I realize there are many ways and reasons to store files and whatnot, which is why I'm excluding lossless formats from this "highly scientific" poll of mine :-) For me, I like WMA because I think it sounds better at 192 bitrate than either MP3 or OGG. I also like WMA because I can burn, rip, and listen using only Windows Media Player. But usually I just burn and rip with it. I listen with Trout. Some songs have to be saved as APE, because no matter the bitrate I notice a degradation. I know this is subjective, everyone has different ears, but I think WMA has the most "ooomph" and presence, with a full bass sound, and the least amount of high end distortion. Ogg files I can discern a little more tinny noise. MP3's, to me, have always sounded weak in the bass department, and they have a hollow sounding, flat mid range. I think at 192 bitrate it goes WMA, followed by OGG, then a distant 3rd is mp3.
-
I like the sound of WMA myself :-) This is what happens when javascript is turned off... There was supposed to be three options, MP3, OGG, WMA.

Siberia, 1908. Didn't kill anyone, but it could have. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event Bear in mind, about 70% of the Earth's surface is water. Asteroid Passing Earth Will Be Closer Than Moon
ZortMcGort11 replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
Beyond the orbit of Pluto, the Kuiper belt (named after the discoverer) contains hundreds of thousands of comet like bodies composed of ice and carbonaceous chondrites. The Kuiper belt dwarfs the asteroid belt in size. These are like large dirty snowballs. Whenever something perturbs them during their orbit around the sun, it can send them careening toward the inner solar system. Rogue comets from outside our solar system can perturb the orbits of comets in the Kuiper belt, also explosions from Super Novas can dislodge the comets, sending them inside the solar system. Not that I disbelieve in God, but Earth has been hit by many comets and asteroids in its history. The traces of these impacts are washed away from geologic processes like erosion, sediment, water, vegetation. On places like the moon, however, where there are no geologic processes, the impact craters remain unchanged for eons. -
They should have melted those gold coins down... then they'd have plausible deniability. "Oh look, I just happened to have found this gigantic gold nugget in my backyard. It's like all shiny and new. Hey, weird, huh?"
