Thanks, Jumper! It works. After googling what you posted above, this is the thread that came up: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/75629-pata-cable-select/ Quite an informative read. Even though I'm no expert on these types of things. I put the "jumper" on CS, cable select position, and on the first try the BIOS recognized the drive. Windows 2000 is now loaded on the "HP a310n." When I was playing around with the jumpers, I kept going back and forth ONLY between master and slave. But this seems to have solved the problem, putting it on CS. What exactly does this tell me about the computer? How is it different because it doesn't work on master/slave? Well, thank you very much for that link... it helped. I will look into this for more info, as I'm not familar with these. Thanks. It works, that's what counts.

I bought a $20 computer at the goodwill... the sticker said "needs a hard drive." Okay, that sounds simple enough, I thought. Anyway, get it home, put in my Western digital 40gb hard drive (IDE), turn it on, the BIOS keeps saying no hard drive detected. It doesn't appear in the BIOS under primary master or slave. I tried moving around the jumper and plugging into both the slave and master cables. But can't seem to get anything to work. Anybody have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm going to try another hard drive in a second, but if that doesn't work, then I'm pretty sure it's not my spare hard drives. Because they were all working last time I used them. I popped in my Windows ME floppy boot disk, then I typed in "C:" and it said drive letter not recognized, or something to that effect. Anyways, every time I turn the computer on now, it says Operating System Not Found. Here is the HP specifications page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00040494&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en

@ Tripredacus Because we'd all be stuck in 1994 :-) Thanks for checking it out :-) @Jaclaz Hah! LOL. That's crazy. I've never seen that before. That's like the total power user way to set up the command prompt. I will definitely revise my page now. Thank you :-) *Edit* Jaclaz is now immortalized on my home page. I give credit where it's due.

Thanks for visiting, Flasche. I also bookmarked your "under construction" Win9x website. I'll add a link to it when I get my own links page up. If that's okay? No pressure or anything. LOL. These website things take time, I know. I plan on adding more stuff when I get the chance.

End of XP support: Implications for 9x users?
ZortMcGort11 replied to Andrew T.'s topic in Windows 9x/ME
I think the biggest implication will be web standards. It seems like the prevalance of IE 6, and how it hung around forever, was one of the major obstacles in terms of providing backwards compatibility. Now, web developers probably won't concern themselves with such old browsers like IE 6 or even FF2 or FF3... that's assuming they have at all the last couple years. At least, no more than the bare minimum. -

Problems running Windows 3.1 in VirtualBox
ZortMcGort11 replied to ppgrainbow's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Forgive my ignorance about virtual machines, but why configure anything for DOS 5.0 (?), when DOS 6.22 would clearly be better/optimal for Windows 3.1? http://www.pcxt-micro.com/historychart.html Does it work fine without the patched generic SVGA drivers? Just curious...- 3 replies

Let me put it another way. I use my computer a lot, for the few/minimal needs I require of it.How is Windows ME really that bad? I can burn audio CD's. I can manage and organize my photography. I can use it as a glorified typewriter. And I can do basic web surfing with it. If I was a windows XP owner, I would be sort of irritated right now. Basically, the only reason people are being forced to upgrade is because there are criminals out there. Not because the computer itself is worthless or bad. But simply because of criminal activity. Would you get rid of your car because it doesn't have a good anti-theft device? Sole reason for throwing away a perfectly good computer. If my opinion offends anyone, sorry. I will leave and never come back. *edit You can read my long winded explanation in that link in post #2. I think this is the last opinion piece I will be submitting. Good day.
