  1. Got an email back from Anyburn, they informed that Win9x/ME isn't supported :-( Well, I hope they fix their download page to reflect that.
  2. check this out :-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages_by_type
  3. Well I never learned Assembly, so I wouldn't know where to point you to. I can't give advice about something I know nothing about. I took a course in Visual Basic (for making Windows programs) in high school... and before that I already had an interest in Qbasic (DOS). Other than learning HTML, dos batch commands, and Basic, that's as far as my programming skills evolved. BASIC is a high level language, and in the case of HTML, a very high level language... both are very different than assembly and much easier than assembly too. You should go after what interests you though. Like, do you want to make apps? Or do you want to make games? Or do you want to do hard, low level assembly programming? There's lots of different kinds of programming to choose from. I liked Qbasic, well, simply because I could read the code of other's people games and learn from them. Plus, pretty much none of it was copyrighted, game source code was entirely free to edit and alter; the entire QBasic fan community was pretty much open to sharing. You learned by reading other people's works and playing around with them. I suppose it's like that with other languages, I don't know... but QuickBasic source code was confined to one single .bas file to open and read in a text editor. Again, it was extremely low tech and fast, but fun! The core concepts of programming are there however. There were some really smart people who did some amazing things with it. They were geniuses probably. You gotta just go for what interests you :-)
  4. LOL. I'm an expert on Moss, I have a whole yard full that I have to mow. It took over the grass. Now I just mow moss.

  6. Some rather grim news: "28 Year Old CEO Of Bitcoin Exchange Dead After Possible Suicide." http://newswatch.us/28-year-old-ceo-of-bitcoin-exchange-dead-after-possible-suicide/ also, http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/02/27/american-ceo-of-singapore-startup-first-meta-dies/
  7. Reminds me of the classic X-Files episode "Ice." Probably in the top ten X-Files shows ever made. They get these slugs that attach to your neck and force your to kill people, only way to cure it was to introduce a second slug into the victim, whereby the slugs would kill each other. It was sort of like "The Thing."
  8. ^ Ouch. Paper money is still safest and least traceable I would think. Paper trail is one thing, but an electronic trail is quite another. Besides, you can be inventive and come up with cool places to hide your paper money besides under your mattress.
  9. Never seen the show (kinda before my time), but next time I'm at the library i'll check out those clips. I have a couple superman comics too, my favorite one is where he died fighting against Doomsday. I got this special edition book that came out in 1993 "The Death of Superman" with a bloodied Superman on the cover, it's a compendium of all seven issues where he battled Doomday. Then of course, they brought him back as a part cyborg. Off topic, I've seen the batman tv series from the 60's on ME TV. Just this weekend Batman and Robin foiled the plans of the Bookworm... played by Roddy McDowel. Cheesy, but entertaining. Far cry from today's way too serious stuff, which is bordering on creepy and uncomfortable and tedious to watch a second time, what with the actors purposefully making their voices low and gravelly and the action being rediculous.
  10. ^ email already sent, along with my drive info and OS :-) Hopefully they'll fix it, because it seems like a nice prog. Or else they might drop Win9x support completely to avoid further headaches. LOL. We'll see.
  11. my disc drive, from ImgBurns startup log/screen: "12:22:07 - Drive 1 - Info: LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S KS04 (D:)" ^it's a drive I got for $5 dollars at used store.
  12. And especially when using Windows ME, because the error testing and debugging is probably approaching nil for this system. Still, I shouldn't complain too much, because ImgBurn works good in every other way I've tested.
  13. @Jaclaz Thanks for the Anyburn program suggestion, never heard of it before.... unfortunately it didn't detect my disc drive. But I like the user interface more than ImgBurn, and it actually starts under Windows ME , which is a surprising thing in itself. I'll keep it for use on another disc drive/computer. Thanks. @Bphlpt You're correct. I had some ape files that I wanted to make an audio CD with. I think normally every audio format is decoded before the burning process starts. This is why burning with .wav files seems to get done a lot quicker than mp3 because the decoding process is faster... the wavs are basically uncompressed already. MP3s and Ogg being compressed, for example, take longer to decode (not to mention sound worse). In the end, I burned the wav files using DeepBurner. Same result (a nice sounding mix-CD without any loss of quality). I will simply re-convert my .ape files back to .wav before burning. Seems to be the best solution. I have to use ape or flac otherwise my hard drive will get full pretty fast. I don't want to store my music in MP3 because even the maximum bitrate of 320 still creates inferior sounding music to my ears. Thanks for the replies everyone.
  14. Tried creating an audio CD of .ape and .flac files using both ImgBurn 2.5.8.0, and Burrrn 1.14, but both failed. Burrrn gave a simple, unhelpful message: Failed. ImgBurn gave this error message: I really doubt the files are corrupted... I converted the APE files from fresh new WAV's that I ripped. Used several different converters too, just in case the files were written badly. The ape files I converted from the wavs, they play fine in several different programs. I went to the ImgBurn forum, but they didn't have much on this. One thread there suggests to google "ape directshow filters." Well, I did that and installed the first thing I came across*, but still no luck. Any pros here know how to get ImgBurn to write audio CD's with either .ape or .flac files in Windows Me? *http://www.free-codecs.com/download/RadLight_APE_DirectShow_Filter.htm Furthermore, in case I can't get ImgBurn to work, does anyone know of a program for Windows ME that does write .ape or .flac files without any hassles? Obviously ImgBurn and Burrrn don't work :-(
  15. This maybe isn't helpful, Flasche, but you could always give QBasic a quick try, if you want to try "easy" beginner programming. And since I notice that you have Windows ME selected as your OS, finding a copy of Qbasic for Dos would probably be the fastest, easiest way of jumping into the world of programming. Sure, it's a crummy defunct language, and you can make cheesy DOS games with it, but as a "programming 101" course it's pretty good. There's millions of tutorials out there. You can probably learn it in like 1 day. And if you needed any help with Qbasic, I'd be glad to offer pointers. I made a few programs myself with qbasic, back in the day.
  16. Played Jaws on the NES!! Fun game from what I can barely remember. Of course, every NES game was fun :-)
  17. "The software giant on Monday announced that it has partnered with Laplink to provide XP users with a free data migration tool called PCmover Express for Windows XP, which copies all the files and settings from your Windows XP PC to a new computer running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1." http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2454484,00.asp If you don't know what version of Windows you're running, you can visit the following: http://amirunningxp.com/
  18. "Microsoft Mulls Over a Free Version of Windows 8.1: Desperate Times, Desperate Measures" http://www.itproportal.com/2014/03/01/microsoft-mulls-over-a-free-version-of-windows-81-desperate-times-desperate-measures/ If I were the microsoft head honcho, I'd extend the life cycle of all current and former operating systems. Not only XP and 2000, but Windows ME/98/95 :-)Why not support all your former products any way possible? Try and reach the absolute total potential of each system. Write new drivers for hardware. Fix bugs, anything! Think of all the computer parts that ended up in landfills, and you can thank microsoft's greed for all that waste and pollution. But they could redeem themselves by becoming a green company :-) Their policy of forcing people to upgrade has now reached the point where they have nobody left who needs or wants to upgrade. They might as well just hang on to what they got / had. Enjoy what's left of their domination. But that's only if I were the head honcho. First thing I would do is setup a KernelEx division and get started working on Windows ME second edition :-) And then I'd also extend the life cycle of 2000, XP and Vista, say, another decade at least! They could have gotten into the computer recycling business too. But, it's too late at this point. The time to have done such a thing was before they started their campaign to rid the world of Internet Explorer 6 and now Windows XP (think of all the "ancient" computers out there). They could have continued supporting a vast user base for another decade. If Microsoft goes bankrupt in another 5-10 years, I bet my ideas would've sounded good.

  21. It's 30 years too late for any Star Wars sequels. They should have struck while the iron was hot.

  23. I take it they didn't find Bigfoot then? If any sort of pre-historic creatures actually exists, I'm hoping that it's Mokele-mbembe ;-)
  24. I'm a born-again christian, however, back when I was an atheist I used to read all about the paranormal, UFOs, bigfoot, loch ness monster, ESP, and all that stuff. Skeptic's Dictionary is a good debunking website :-) http://www.skepdic.com/shc.html An excellent pro-paranormal news website is The Anomalist. http://www.anomalist.com/
