  1. Either register, or you can use one of the mirrors that are on the thread. Does it really take that long to sign up for an account...
  2. Hey there, Yes, AveDesk is the program that I use to get the desklet on the desktop. You can find more information on it here. The desklet itself is an alpha (version 0.1) and it's named virtual console. Cheers!
  3. Use nLite! That'll "OC" any computer... I've set up my parent's work laptop (P-III 750, 128MB RAM) on their island with an nLited XP CD, and the thing just screams! (at least for what they need... e-mail, internet). Used nLite and disabled prefetching (they don't care about boot times...). Edit: If you're using 512MB + 64MB of RAM, I'd say just ditch the 64MB chip. I've found that computers don't really like dealing with different RAM chips that are very different in size. My desktop wasn't really happy with 512+128, but it was fine with either. I've seen this kind of behaviour in other computers as well. I'd say chips that are double the size of each other is the limit (i.e. 128 +256 or 256+512, etc).
  4. Hey everyone, I'm just wondering if there's an easy way to start a program from any location in a command line. I know that if you create a shortcut to the program and put it in the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\ folder, you can start it by using the "start" command, but I'm trying to find a way to not need this. Is it possible or am I trying to skate uphill? Thanks! P.S. As to why I want to do this, have a look at my latest screenshot in the Desktop Screenshots section for the command line desklet that I have.
  5. God (or whatever almighty being suits you) is looking down on Earth and realizes that John has been a very good man his entire life. He therefore decides to grant John one wish. God appears infront of John and says: "John, I am God. You have been a good man, and as a reward, I will grant you one wish." John thinks about his wish for a while and says: "I'd like to have a bridge from Los Angeles to Hawaii." To which God replies: "But John, a bridge is such a worldly thing. Can't you think of a better wish?" John thinks some more, and finally says: "I'd like to be able to understand women." God replies: "Would you like that bridge with two lanes or four?"
  6. Oh how true... I used to punish my cat when he kept on waking me up at 2 in the morning by doing something similar... I would fill the bathtub with cold-ish water and put him in before closing the glass door. The edges of the bathtub are slippery enough that he could never hold himself out of the water... crude, but effective. Very good ones.
  7. Yep, that's pretty much it. Copy the files from the install CD onto your hard drive. Update the files, and then burn them back onto a CD for future installs. This doesn't just apply to XP either. You can do this with Windows 2000 and the Office line as well. Now... the big question that you might have... why? A slipstreamed install will be fully up to date with those security hotfixes/service packs that you would otherwise need to download from Windows Update. Hope this helps!
  8. Pretty nice. In future, just post your screenshot in the Monthly Desktop section. More people will look there.

    Xbox 2

It looks like Microsoft is playing the numbers game with the XBox2... with the 3.5GHz processor... to make it "faster" than the PS3 which might have a lower clock speed processor. Ultimately what makes the gaming system is the games that are made for it. That's why PS2 is still doing better as a gaming system than XBox. A large number of XBox sales have been from people who make a LinuXBox, something Microsoft isn't all to happy about... (but probably something that I'll be doing in a while...)
  10. Where did you get those numbers? The system reads disk space in base2, i.e. in multiples of 1024 (2^10) bytes. Therefore 1GB = 1024MB You can work out the multiples from there. This is always how I've done my parititons (or rounded up one step in the software) and they've always come out as nice numbers in Windows.
  11. Hey everyone, I just returned the case yesterday and picked up the Antec case mentioned... WOW! This case looks really nice and I'm truly surprised by the amount of space inside. The screwless drive rail system that this case has was a little confusing, as well as the fact that the mounting screws for the mobo were totally different than those that were in the old case (the old case had press-fit mountings vs screws in the new case). I'm truly stunned by how quiet the case is as well... almost all HD noise is gone due to the rubber dampers, and the PS is deadly quiet as well. The loudest part of the computer is the CPU fan... The nice thing about this case for me is the fact that I can upgrade it very easily. There's plenty of space inside and lots of room to adjust the cables for ample ventilation. That's another nice point about it... In the old case, the CPU temps were about 54C (130F) at idle and about 65C (150F) at load... a bit high for my likes. Now it's at 45C at idle and 54C at load... much better for an Athlon 1333MHz. Cheers!
  12. It has to do with the way that Windows handles wildcards. I think that it reads the command: del *.txt as to delete anything that contains the string ".txt" in it, thereby including test.txt2. I'm not quite sure as to why the newer version would do this... I can imagine that it might screw up some people's programs...
  13. Man! that thing is so fast!!! Maybe you should put some speed holes in it too! And a spoiler! OOO and a muffler!
  14. It's at the Aqua-Soft forums. Look for Virtual Console. Link It helps everyone read the threads better if you quote the person that you read from in your post. Either that or tag the beginning of the post with something like "@PersonA" to let people know who the message is directed to. Just a note for the future.
  15. Man... AveDesk just gets better and better. A guy just released an alpha version of a desklet that lets you have a command shell on your dekstop. Along with SysStats 2.5 (also recently released), it's unbeatable! Look See!
  16. Välkommen! Have fun learning all there is to know here!
  17. $40-70 CAD... which works out to about $35 USD... Still... I'm gonna head out to the depot tomorrow and get this case/PS.
  18. I've tried all kinds of Windows-Expose programs out there, but I haven't found any that have the same smooth-sliding features that Macs have. That kind of rendering power just isn't possible for the typical computer wihtout making specific calls to the graphics card.
  19. Grr... Very Grr.. I just headed out to the local NCIX depot to see if I could get a new case/PS for my girlfriend's old computer. The guy at NCIX said that some problems that I was having were probably due to a shoddy power supply. Since a new PS costs $40-70 anyways, why not just get one that comes with a case? So I did... and guess what... the case that I opted for is meant for mATX motherboards... while I have an ATX mobo... BAH!!! And the store isn't open tomorrow... so that means that I'll have to return it on Monday... after all my classes... *grumble* Just a little vent session there....
  20. Does it have to be through a USB stick? Why can't you use the Shared Folders features instead?
  21. Umm... yeah... right... so incredibly random... totally not something I'd expect here.
  22. How long does it take to shut down when you're in safe mode?
  23. I don't think that this will ever see its way into a MS based computer because of the way that graphics are displayed while you're at the desktop. In a Windows-based computer, the graphics are still handled by the CPU. Look at the CPU usage when you drag a window around. In a Mac, the graphics are truly handled by the GPU. This can be done because Apple keeps very close tabs on the hardware that goes into their computers, and therefore can write the proper code to handle complex graphics like Expose. Until Windows integrates graphics related operations into graphics card system calls, we won't see anything like that... (well... we might if they just rely on the stupidly fast processors of tomorrow...)
  24. To clean out the Windows Temp files on startup, you can download a small app called CleanIt. On its first run, it will ask you for your startup directory. Then, every time you start the computer, it will delete everything in the temp directory for you. As for temporary internet files, I could have sworn that IE has a setting buried somewhere that deletes the files on program close. Don't quote me on that though. Hope this helps!
  25. BAH!!!! You @&*#^@#.... I thought I did a perfect parallel park in that game with my time... and I don't have the time to play that right now... grr... very grr... Good job though!
