  1. Hi there, My personal favorite GUI extension is AveDesk. It's got great plugins and lets you have everything on your desktop. I've always found a dock AND taskbar to simply clash. Either one or the other, but not both. AveDesk also has the nice extension called SysStats, which lets you put system meters on your desktop, as well as callendars, clocks, etc etc (almost anything you want). Version 1.2 is due out soon! Lots of bug fixes and new features. Probably the biggest feature is ShowCase. By pressing a hotkey (you can assign it), it will fade all your current work and bring the desklets (icons) to the foreground. There you can click them and they'll open. Either hit the hotkey or click on anywhere away from a desklet to return to normal work. Check it out here. Cheers! EDIT: I forgot to mention... I've got 8 icons (shortcuts) and a calendar up right now, and it uses a mere 2660K of RAM.
  2. For those of you who have studied complex numbers, leave this one alone... For those of you who haven't... bust your brains on this... if: 3^2 = 3*3 = 9 and i^2 = -1 then what is: i^i = ? and log(i) = ? As for the second question, a good hint is to use Euler's Equation e^(i*pi) + 1 = 0 and figure it out from there. Cheers! P.S. Don't just use your calculator... numbers mean nothing in math, method is everything.
  3. That's pretty hilarious... It's just really funny to see stuff like this happen. I guess this is why the computers at my university are all UNIX based, since when they got the computers, Win98 couldn't handle situations like these. It's just really funny to see stupid code like this...
  4. Why did you need a new router? Blind spots in your house? Oh, and you can never have enough wireless!
  5. Well... start with the Thermochemistry part... I (as an Engineering Physics student) see that as using something that blows up (and generates heat in the process) by means of a chemical reaction. Applications of this for Civil Engineering could be to use dynamite to blast your way through a mountain for a railroad. Just a thought.... Just a funny quote... ERTW!!!
  6. The only problem here is that you're starting to talk about AI, and I don't think that any company is ready to start deveolping that. Just look at all the movies with that theme. They're there for a reason. Asimov imagined that type of thing happening 50 years ago... Oh, and yeah, it's just stupid code, but a good example of what a good OS should be able to deal with. The UNIX machines that we have in the computer labs at UBC have been able to deal with that type of code for years... And un4given1, just because no anti-virus program would ever catch "del C:\ /s /q /f" doesn't mean that it's not harmful. A virus could be as simple as that... to simply delete vital files and cripple the OS, or corrupt the memory as in my example.
  7. Hey everyone, In class yesterday, we were going over operating systems in my computer science class, and the prof put up some code that would cause a Win9x computer to crash and burn, while a Win2K or XP computer would simply throw an error at you. while(1) { *( (char *) random() ) = 62; } The code is in C. For those of you who don't understand what it's doing, is... while(1) = loop forever random() = generates a random number between 0 and 2^31-1 (char *) random() = tells the program that the random number is now an address in memory. *( (char *) random() ) = 62; ===> Finds that address in memory and stores the 8-bit representation of 62 there. No compiler or anti-virus program would catch this problem, ever...
  8. Do you think it is so much faster that it could persuade current PS2 owners into getting the slimline? Allos, thanks to the infrared port, being able to use the remote without having to plug in a thing to the controller slot is a big plus (yeah, I have the oldest US PS2 model [7 days after initial release ]) BTW: I like Kasumi I don't think that the "increased" speed alone is worth the money to get a completely new system. If you can do as I did, and sell your old one for a decent price to compensate for the new one, then sure, go for it. The original PS2 model had a built in IR reciever after the first year of release I think... I had it on my old clunker... it was right between the power and the eject buttons (you couldn't see it though). And Kasumi is nice... and Helena... (Best costume ever in that game is Zack, costume 3 )
  9. I'm not all too sure about SoundForge itself... I've never tried to make files that are four hours long... As for not crashing, I'd say disconnect from the internet, and disable EVERYTHING that you don't need. Experiment will a smaller file to see if all goes well during recording, disabling programs and services one at a time. Things that you should disable are: Anti-Virus Firewall Anti-Spyware (if you have any) Services (have a look at Black Viper's site for more info) Any other programs that you don't need. If all goes well, you should have at most 15 processes running when you start SoundForge up (look in Task Manager, under processes tab). I don't think that processor or hard drive speeds are going to matter all that much. Just make sure that you have good RAM with no bad addresses and you should be good to go. Hope this helps!
  10. I just got mine and WOW!!! This thing is just sexy... I can't believe how small it is... The only think that I can think of that's really different (and allowed Sony to save lots of space) is that the power supply is now external, with a DC connector into the actual box. Other than that... it's just sweet... Oh and as for the "faster" bit... I think I've noticed it being a bit faster loading DOA2:Hardcore... mmm.... get me to Ayane faster!!!
  11. Have a look at Black Viper's Site for Win2K service information. Cheers!
  12. As long as my computer had all the file sharing crap with Windows disabled and a good firewall, I'd use the connection for general browsing/downloading. I definately wouldn't submit any personal information over the network though...
  13. Hey there, It depends on the browser that you're using. With Maxthon, you can configure this to your liking. I don't know about Firefox or Opera (or IE for that matter). Cheers!
  14. Hi there, Your license is for you to use. As long as you have that copy of Windows installed on only one computer, then you are fine. When you go to activate Windows on the new hard drive (since you can't have two hard drives on a laptop), you'll probably get a message that your copy of windows has already been activated. You'll need to call Microsoft to explain your situation to them. They'll give you all the info that you need to finish everything off. As for RAM, I've upgraded RAM a lot of times (on desktops and laptops) and never had any problems with activation. Hope this helps!
  15. I'm using Maxthon right now... it's way better than Avant Browser IMO. No option on the list, so no vote.
  16. I really really hope there's an option to have the common places bar (or whatever the replacement is) put off to the left again. For people with widescreen displays (like on laptops), having this at the top is really annoying. Not to mention, it's been shown that having a list sorted vertically is much more easily scanned than when the list is horizontal (This is why MS made the latest verison of Outlook with the reading pane vertical). If there is no option for that, then I'll be disabling it altogether (If you can).
  17. Holy crap you have a lot of apps running... (and a lot of screen space!) What kind of system are you running? Is that a msstyles skin or WB?
  18. From what I've read about the Windows Firewall... it doesn't scan outgoing packets (even the SP2 firewall). The big question becomes... what happens if you have a virus on your computer? If you have a properly configured firewall that scans both outgoing and incoming packets, viruses and worms will be slowed quite a bit (maybe not all e-mail viruses, but the ones that spread themselves through an app). With Sygate, I've got it configured such that only the programs that I know I want to connect to the internet are allowed. Any others (including svchost.exe and the ntkernel) are blocked. It's probably the most secure way that I can think of having my firewall. It's just a matter of how paranoid you are... (me = paranoid)
  19. Maxthon is very similar to IE. The only real difference that your g/f would notice is the use of tabs instead of windows in the task bar. Other than that, it's pretty much the same. I managed to convince my g/f to use it, and now she likes it better than IE!
  20. I can't beat the Amish Computer, but I do remember a while back a company only known as "L" that made absolutely sickening systems. They had a P4 Prescott running at 3.8GHz, with 4 GB of RAM, a terabyte hard drive (one drive, not total space), and so much more. One of the most impressive things that they sold was a 4 screen LCD display, all connected as one unit, with a single DVI connector. The thing had a total diagonal of 108" and a resolution of 6400X1200. I'd love to see that desktop screenshot done by Dagonet' or Javagreen... The display cost $17,000 USD though. Not to mention you needed the very top video card there to use it (a Matrox card of some sort).
  21. Hi there, Boot the computer into Safe Mode (restart and hit F8 before the Windows login screen, just keep pressing it). Run Ad-Aware again and Spybot. I had this problem a while back with one of my friends' computers and that solved to problem for us. Also, to prevent this from happening again, go and get SpywareBlaster. Also, you should consider using another browser other than IE. Maxthon is a good IE based browser (so you won't have any troubles with websites not loading) and helps prevent spyware from getting onto the system. Cheers!
  22. Hi there, I'm selling my old PS2 for $150 (CAD) and buying the new one at Future Shop for $180... pretty sweet deal for me. I think that the new PS2 looks sweet, and unless you definately want to play FF-XI, you don't really need a hard drive. The new PS2 definately gets my
  23. Hi there, The only problem that I can think of that you would run into would be programs that are constantly scanning your computer/internet (i.e. AV programs and firewalls). As for spyware scanners, you should be fine. Cheers!
  24. Hey everyone, I just thought I'd share my knowledge about a problem that I stumbled upon with my dad's computer. He had installed Nero InCD a while back because it came with the Nero Suite that he had bought. He was running NIS2004 at the time. When his subscription ran out in September, he upgraded to NIS2005. He hasn't used his computer very much since then because he travels a lot for work. To make a long story short... the only thing this computer can do now is connect to the internet, print... and type stuff. No USB mass storage devices work (including cameras). Floppy's dead (with windows, it works in BIOS). CD-RW drive dead (works in BIOS). I've dug around, but all that I could find on this was that people who ran into this problem had been forced to format and re-install. Neither of the software companies have released a fix or update for the problem. Just to warn people...
