  1. I say 9. I can't really see what's up with 10 that's all that much better, other than taking away rights that I have to my own music (try ripping on one computer and then trasnferring files to another of your computers... it's a pain in the a** with DRM). And as raskren said, the UI in 10 is just butt ugly...
  2. Yep, UDMA is enabled. I've got my hard drive connected to IDE0 - Master, the DVD burner o IDE1-Master, and a CD-RW drive connected to IDE1-Slave. So yes, they are separate cables and IDE connections. I remember reading somewhere that you can only access one IDE device at a time per IDE slot, so I have the two biggies on separate slots. I defrag my drive fairly often... probably once every 3-4 days, but thanks for the input.
  3. Dev-C++ is one of the best freeware programs out there. It comes with the g++ compiler built right in and handles multiple files very well (when you get to that stage).
  4. Hrm... I guess Everest does have a strange bug in it... The label on the HD says 5400RPM... Well, it goes to show you that you can't take computers for granted...
  5. Or you can use Miranda... much less bloat and much more configurable than MSN, even with MSN Plus.
  6. The opening of IE from MSN Messenger is hardwired into the code of MSN. You could try your solution and let us know how it goes.
  7. Hey [deXter], I'll agree with Jeremy and DigeratiPrime in that your post is among the top 5, if not the best, of this thread. I completely agree with you that Opera has that "well-oiled-machine" feel to it sometimes that you have to fight with Firefox to get (even though I've never been able to get it quite the same). When I tell people to get a non-IE based browser, I too point them towards Firefox and say that if they don't like it at first, ask me how to help them get it to the way that they do like it. It takes a bit of work, but it's worth it in the end. At least for a first step. I tell them about Opera as well and all the features of it, but most people aren't willing to pay $39 for something that they don't care about. IMO, anything but plain old IE. Maxthon is my number 3 choice after Opera and Firefox. Cheers!
  8. EDIT Again, same as above. Mods, please remove these two copies. Sorry about that...
  9. EDIT Wow... sorry, I don't know what happened to my connection there...
  10. Well, you have to think about the fact that the entire registry is used to manage every single resource on the computer, from knowing where to find a specific file, to settings for a program, and so on and so forth. Think of every single check mark box that's available to you (there are many more than the common ones we use daily), as well as all the hidden settings that we don't see directly (e.g Prefetch). Then add on top of that all the strings needed to locate icons and programs. All this stuff adds up in the end... after thinking about it, 58MB doesn't seem that bad to me.
  11. No, StyleXP/UXTheme.dll will not get you any closer to removing the description of running tasks (i.e. the text in the taskbar next to the program's icon). I honestly have no clue how this would be done (if it even can be done).
  12. Umm... didn't he say this...? I don't think it's possible to remove that with Reshacker. At least I'd have absolutely no clue where to look. You might want to look into alternative shells. There are plenty out there that give you many more customization options.
  13. It's been a little while since I posted here... notice the new desktop picture desklet. Desktop Clicky Clicky Clicky!!! EDIT I just figured that since school is over and I don't have to work, I can get away with having something pretty to look at when I'm working at my desktop... a little colour on the icons doesn't hurt either. Clicky Clicky Clicky!!! (2)
  14. The "SpeedBooster" technologies that manufacturers add onto their wireless systems are manufacturer specific. I'm guessing that UBC doesn't use this technology, and only has the standard g network. If you want some help on how to make a bigger antenna for your desktop, so you can get full signal from wireless networks in Burnaby, let me know. A friend of a guy in Fizz has one. It's all about connections...
  15. @boooggy: It's a Soyo K7ADA mobo. @puntoMX: Nope... 3.5" Seagate 40 GB 4200 RPM, that's what Everest tells me.
  16. It's a standard 3.5" drive, but yes it is quite slow. The system itself is about 3 years old... I have noticed that the buffer does tend to jump around quite a bit during the burn. Once I save up a bit of pocket money from my new job, I'll get a bigger and faster hard drive. Thanks for the input!
  17. I've also read online somewhere that you can connect a simple LCD screen (the black and white kind you find on a calculator) to your parallel port and have MBM (or the like) feed the data onto that screen. Talk about the ultimate in case modding! Making your own temp screen on your case!
  18. Hey everyone, I've just got a quick question to see if I have to do some debugging/troubleshooting. I bought a new DVD burner a couple of weeks ago, and all went well when it was installed. Windows detected the device and installed the drivers automatically. I'm just wondering about what the normal amount of CPU usage is for when I'm actually burning a DVD. CDs burn fine with Nero using ~10% of the CPU at 40x burning, but with a 4x DVD, Nero itself only uses about 7%, but task manager shows the CPU using about 50-60%, not assigned to any process. This CPU usage starts after the files have been cached and lasts for the duration of the burn. I'm using Nero 6.6.0.12 and my system specs are as follows: Athlon 1333MHz 512MB PC2700 RAM 40GB 4200RPM HD LG GSA-4163B DVD Burner(Link) I've only done about 5 DVDs so far, and I've done them all on Maxell 4x DVD-Rs. I'm just curious if this is because my CPU isn't all that powerful and there may be more going on during a DVD burn. I really have no clue and would just like to know if there's any cause for concern. Thanks in advance!
  19. I think I'll try the spray paint first, since the drives sit pretty flush with my case anyways, and I've got a case door, so I don't see my drives all that much anyways... Thanks for the info tho! It's good stuff to know!
  20. I think people have misinterpreted the question here... I also go to the same university, and the wireless works for both 802.11b and 802.11g cards. Support for "a" isn't up yet, since it's not as common. I think the question here is whether or not he should get a wireless card for his desktop, or use Internet Connection Sharing on his laptop to gain internet access on his desktop (through the router). I'd recommend getting the wireless card for the desktop. It just makes the setup a lot easier, and you'll be able to setup the system to connect to the VPN server on startup (for security purposes n stuff). You can easily find a good wireless card for your desktop at NCIX computers. They've always got clearances on PCI wifi cards. Oh, and check your PM inbox. Cheers!
  21. The best of the best just got better! Azureus Rules!
  22. MUAHAHAHHAHHAHAH!!!!!! A first day at work that absolutely rocked!!! I got to work and do the usual "sign your life away" (confidentiality agreement) as well as all the necessary contact info stuff. Then, my supervisor sets me up with my own workstation, that was actually meant to be a small server... 2.4GHz Intel Xeon 512MB PC3200 RAM 40GB 7200 RPM HD 128MB ATI RAGE Video Card Man does the thing ever scream! Everything is so bloddy fast on that computer. Not to mention that the internet is a T3 connection to the building, so everything downloads stupidly fast. I had to download a freeware PCB building software today, and the 9MB download was done in 3.5 seconds... Not to mention that the stuff that I'm doing is actually interesting and fun!
  23. Hey everyone, This isn't really all that important news to the masses, but I finally found myself a co-op job! I'm going to be working at the BC Cancer Research Center (BC = British Columbia, Canada) designing circuits, programming circuits in assembly, and programming front-end apps to control those circuits. I'm totally stoked for getting this job since it's very interesting work and it's going towards a really good cause. I had the interview on Friday morning, and within 3 hours they called the Co-op office at my university and offered me the position and said that they wanted me to start working tomorrrow! A nice bonus is that the dress code is casual... no monkey suits... Wish me luck!
  24. It would also help to know if it was a straight UA install or if there were any modifications made (nLite, reg tweaks, etc). Was the computer connected to the internet during or directly after the install? It only takes a few seconds for an unprotected computer to become infected. The extremely high system cache being used makes me think that there are some tweaks going on here...
  25. 1) Why do you have the PP variable? I've never used anything like it and all my RunOnceEx installs have been fine. Unless there's a specific reason for it, I would remove it. 2) As for the files being copied to the hard drive, have a look through the UACD Guide here for information on the $OEM$ folders. This is where I learned all about this stuff. You'll also find all the information on how to incorporate the %CDROM% variable properly. Just a note, you'll end up using one or the other. I'd suggest implementing both and testing them in VMWare or VirtualPC for your own benefit. Ultimately, the CDROM is probably the way to go, since you'll end up with less files on your hard drive. You'll also find more information on CMDOW. To quickly answer your question, only files that are located in specific places in a folder on the CD named $OEM$ will be copied to the hard drive. All other files will stay on the CD. If you have a folder named apps where all your installers are, then the code you posted looks fairly good (except for the PP variable). That site is the UACD bible/koran/*insert book of choice here*. Also, next time you post, use tags. It makes the actual file itself a lot easier to read.Good luck and welcome to the forums!
