  1. If you can use the Luna Theme, then you'd be able to throw another theme on there that would look a lot prettier (that shade of blue gets on my nerves...). AveDesk is a nice addon to the desktop that doesn't take up a lot of resources, but provides a lot of information, such as drive space, recycle bin usage, etc. Check it out! Very nice Crispy! It may be plain, but it's pretty... simple is good! Btw, what media player is that? It looks a lot like Winamp with the MMD3 skin, but not quite... Cheers!
  2. Winamp is probably what you'd want then. It's got a very nice Media Library and doesn't take up very much resources. I've never looked back to WMP since I switched ages ago.
  3. No, that's not what he meant. Take a quick read through the thread. He was having problems with his Omniquad Firewall after he applied a MS Update. When he uninstalled the update, all was well again. He said that the update was meant to stop firewalls and programs from working unless they had been "approved" by Microsoft.
  4. Hey everyone, Has anyone heard of any news (apparently a year old) regarding a patch that Microsoft has or will release where it will prevent freeware from running? Apparently, software developers will have to include a portion of code to "allow" their programs to be run on XP. Any programs that don't have this code won't run at all. I personally think that this is a very stange idea... but it was brought up to me by a member of another forum... here is a link to the thread where this was brought up. Link Any leads? Thanks.
  5. All of these processors are limited to desktops. I personally think that the Pentium-M processors are the best ever made, considering that the lastest versions use about one-third the power of a 3.2GHz P4-HT and are able to keep up, toe-to-toe with any of the standard processors out there. Not to mention the obvious advantage of Intel's SpeedStep technology to give laptop users 5 hours of battery life with average usage (vs 2 hours with P4 and 1.5hours with AMD).
  6. That's a really nice desktop, MCT. But as another said... it's a bit too bright for me to work with. 4/5 In contrast... here's my desktop. Let me know what you think! Linky
  7. I never was able to get a grasp of playlists in WMP... that was the big reason why I switched over to Winamp back in the 2.x days. Whatever works!
  8. @ ]Bonkers[ Yes, UBC does stand for University of British Columbia. I'm in third year Engineering Physics, Computer Science Option... it's a long name for a long program Are you at UBC as well? If so, it's a small world... Oh... and ERTW! (The Cairn on top of the aquatics centre ruled!)
  9. Are there any other media players out there that are easily configurable to have Global hotkeys like WinAmp has? That's the only reason why I haven't switched away from WinAmp yet.
  10. My recommendation would be to set your paging file to a static size (i.e. Max = Min). This will prevent Windows from dynamically resizing the pagefile while you're working (thus slowing things down). I've found BlackViper's site very good for disabling services. By default on my computer, there would be about 40MB of RAM being used for the services. I've now been able to slim that down to about 15-20MB. It makes a considerable difference on startup times as well.
  11. I'm gonna put my two cents in here... I can't say that I've ever set up servers to handle the workload of a small company, let alone a big one, but the idea of "workstation-ing" Server 2003 seems kinda odd to me... As prathapml already stated, it's Windows Server 2003, not workstation. That means that plenty of people in Washington state spent a lot of time developing the code to make it run as a server. It's kinda like, IMO, is the stupidest racing vechicle, trucks. What was the truck originally meant to do? Haul lots and lots of cargo around, get dirty, and go places that a normal car can't. Why on earth would you spend your time modifying a truck to make it go fast? Even if you spend millions of dollars on it (like they do in the real world), it will never, ever, ever be as fast as a stock Ferrari 430 or Porsche 911 Turbo (both of which cost considerably less). Windows XP was designed for the common user, the person who has to sit down at their desk and do work. Server 2003 was designed to handle those hundreds/thousands of people all working at their computers and all the information transferring that goes on between them. If Server 2003 worked that much better as a workstation, why hasn't Microsoft developed a new theme (to make it look different), and taken all the good bits out of it and repackaged it as a new OS? They could make a lot of money from that... but they haven't, which probably means that this isn't the case.
  12. I was just thinking about the e-mail section of the pic... They forget to include Outlook (from the Office Suite) in there. I know a lot more people who use Outlook rather than OE for their mail clients. I don't really think that it's a fair argument... very biased in any respect.
  13. Hey there, I usually get about 3-5ms from my router (Linksys BEFW11S4) over wifi. I haven't tried hardwired. Pinging www.google.ca stays at about 42-45ms for me. Are you able to connect a computer directly into the DSL box? It would probably be helpful to compare a direct connection vs a connection via the router. What model of router is it? Cheers!
  14. This isn't quite true. Windows will tell you if the USB port isn't fast enough for the device. If the device isn't fast enough, you won't get any kind of message. The device will simply work at 1.0/1.1 speed.
  15. I still like my Opera since it has other features. For other computers that however, IE 7 will be on there.
  16. Ad-Aware SE Spybot Search&Destroy SpywareBlaster CWShredder On top of that you shouldn't need much else.
  17. Eep... that's a p***cutter... hope you figure things out. Good luck!
  18. Another small point to note is the fact that most people in the world have no idea what UNIX is. Go up to a stranger and ask them if they know what UNIX is. Chances are they won't. Bill Gates is, and has been, a very good businessman. He saw the need for a consumer product and went about the process of building a company around it. The only reason why Windows has been plagued by "security holes" is because people who feel the need to write viruses and worms have mainly targeted Windows based systems because they are the most common. If Linux was the primary OS on all of our computers, we would most definately see a large number of viruses that would attack Linux.
  19. Muahah!!! I knew it was a Mac! I've seen some pretty impressive conversions/emulations for Mac lookalikes, but none of them actually have everything in the exact right place. And no I don't hate you for having it... I actually think that Apple makes a decent product (computer/OS). It's just not for most people. Oh and AveDesk 1.2 is out... Showcase is sweet Showcase example
  20. I think that it is a real Mac computer... he's been talking for a while about getting one. If you want to Mac-ify your WinXP based computer, you can always use the FlyAKite program. It uses some modified files to change the look of your computer. Just out of curiosity, what are the specs on that?
  21. Now that's funny... I guess we all know what his favorite song is...
  22. Miranda is another great IM app. It can be configured to be used as a stand-alone app, so you can run it from a USB key or the like. It only takes up 10MB of RAM when running and has tons of plugins that you can configure to your liking. I just gave it a whirl tonight, and within about 20 mins I had it looking really nice to my liking. Good so far!
  23. The easiest way to do this is to use the Group Policy Editor. Go to Start->Run and type in "gpedit.msc" (without quotes). Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Messenger Set both entries to "Enabled" and restart. Your Windows messenger problems should be gone. Just a note, you'll need the "Security Accounts Manager" service running for this to work (in case you've disabled it). Cheers!
  24. Look in the Unattended Windows section in this forum for more information on that. They've got more regtweaks than you can shake a stick at.
  25. Hey there, Maxthon is a good browser as well. I'd defiately give it a shot to try it out. I must say that I find Opera much much better though. The only annoyance that I've found with it is that files that I want to "open" still get saved to my hard drive permanently (not in a temporary directory).
