  1. Nice a$$... much nicer to discretely fondle... in public. Speed or Strength (advantage in fighting)?
  2. One of the nice advantages to UltraVNC is the built in file transfer. It allows you to browse the entire computer and transfer files very easily.
  3. I think it has to do with all the topics pertaining to Office products being moved from the Software Discussion section to the new Office Discussion section. Nothing bad per se... I got one of these too.
  4. Heard that it's pretty much crap... UltraVNC is definately the way to go with this. I've got it running on my desktop right now. If you're behind a router, a simple forwarding of some ports is all you need.
  5. Haven't reformatted my laptop in about a year now... thanks to Acronis. I reinstalled everything on my desktop about 3 months ago, since that's when I got a new power supply for it so that it actually worked...Something's borked on it though... my own fault for installing a lot of junk on there. Probably gonna do a reinstall in a few weeks...

Wow... that's amazing... never saw that one coming... Good stuff.
  7. I've gotta say that it's sadly the same case with my Compaq Presario X1050CA. When I first got it, there were a whole host of driver software packages that I don't ever use. There was even startup software for the modem of all things... who uses their laptop modem these days anyways. Luckily, Compaq was smart/nice enough to give me a pure XP disc, and a separate disk for drivers and software. I ended up simply formatting and then reinstalling just the drivers for all the components... forget about the Intel ProSet for wireless... it's not really all that great... pretty ugly UI too. Why can't laptop manufacturers simply rely on what Microsoft has already done for them? My laptop works brilliantly with the Wireless Zero Config service and everything else as well... all from Microsoft. Some people never learn...
  8. Well... after a couple of days, I'm pretty much sold. The underlying framework of Arctic is pretty solid, and it downloads just as fast as anything else out there. I'm gonna see if I can play with the code a bit to be able to set it to allocate disk space prior to downloading, as well as individual down/up-load limits. Shouldn't be too difficult... couple extra functions... some threading calls... Might take me a bit of time... my free space is still somewhat limited.
  9. I'm a poor starving student as well, but for the quality of software that you get, $39 seems like a good deal. A good tip for saving up money... put all your small change into a piggy bank (not just pennies, but nickels, dimes and quarters (or the equivalent wherever you live)). Before you know it, you'll have the money for the licence. That's how I've saved up for almost all of my extra gadgets (wireless router, Palm, etc). If you can get 4 friends in on the deal, you can purchase a multi-user licence for $170, you save $5 per licence. Not too shabby... that's what I'm gonna do for my home network when my parents' Norton runs out... buy the multi-licence and put it on all the computers at home.
  10. Full Description It just keeps getting better and better!
  11. I just installed it (Arctic). I'm gonna leave it over night and see how my computer is in the morning. I'll let you know then. EDIT (The next morning): I must say, I'm fairly impressed with Arctic. Mind you it doesn't have all the nice features of other clients, but it is extremely lightweight (3MB RAM, 5MB VM) and downloads just as fast as other clients. I'll have to see if I can adjust the source code a bit to my liking...
  12. Alrighty... I'll go with the masses and leave it be. Thanks for the advice!
  13. I think you might be looking for the golden egg here... The BuzzSawService is really good though, if you can't afford any payware. I've used it on a number of systems and it keeps things decently organized. I second that motion...
  14. Wow... that's a really bright desktop...I dunno... but yellow just doesn't suit computers. Fast cars and motorcycles, sure... but yellow Windows just doesn't seem to work... Pretty cool that you were able to get that going on Win98 though... I thought that you were pretty much limited to changing your wallpaper. Regarding the question about icons for AveDesk, you can find lots of them on DeviantArt and just by using Google. Do a bit of searching and you can find hundreds.
  15. I'm mostly curious as to what you have left...I'm guessing that ALL non-essential services are gone, as well as all the extra software that comes with Windows (IE, OE, Netmeeting, etc etc). Good job though! 47.6MB is quite an achievement.
  16. I still resort back to Winamp every time I find a new media player that people like... all because of customizable keyboard shortcuts. They're pretty essential for my on my laptop. Foobar has them, but the back and forward don't obey the "random play" setting, they go to the next track in the playlist... not very good for an "all music" playlist. Winamp it is for me!
  17. See... this is what I mean by memory leak... ABC is the only thing that I have running... and I'm currently downloading 1 1GB torrent (DJ Doboy Collection) and 1 300MB torrent (DJ GT mixes). Really really sad. ABC is a really great client if it weren't for this...
  18. What version of Outlook are you using? 2003 has a very good junk e-mail filter built in. You can try using something like MailWasherPro. It will only allow e-mails from known contacts to get through. It's somewhat annoying to have people simply write "Use Firefox and Thunderbird" as a first reply. Sometimes there are situations where people can't use FF and Tbird. For example, at work, we connect to a MS Exchange server... can't use Thunderbird for that. Try giving suggestions for what people are asking about rather than supply an alternative at the first get go.
  19. Whoops... I thought one thing, typed another... The NOD32 2.5 Beta is free, but the full 2.5 release is due out in a few days... so you're not going to have very long to reap the benefits of the free-ness. Sorry for the confusion.
  20. No, there is no network activity when a computer is in standby mode. All your downloading has to be down when the computer is up and running.
  21. Why is that? By default, most programs start in Normal priority, but there are some cases where I do want a program to have a higher priority than other stuff (say for example, an analysis program that needs to run for a while). I have tried setting it to High and I've never had any problems... It's actually helped a bit with performance of browsing through folders and such... that's why I'd like to have it set to that as default.
  22. So you haven't had problems with memory leaks? I tried the very first release of ABC3.0 and it brought my system to a crawl... maybe I'll give it another go tonight. EDIT: You shouldn't just be looking at how much RAM task manager tells you that the process is running. You should also look under the Performance tab at how much memory is available when you're not running anything, and when you've had your client running for a few hours.
  23. The beta of NOD32 is not free, and updates will no longer be released for it once the program is released. I personally think that it's worth the money - you're paying for a quality product, unlike Norton... just my opinion. And resources are a big deal for me, hence the two least resource intensive apps that still cut it.
  24. Have you tried running a Knoppix CD on the system to see if the problem exists there as well? My gut instict tells me it's something with the mobo. Usually when power supplies fail, it causes the whole system to stop responding, not just the hard drive (that would probalby be one of the last things that you'd notice).
  25. But is it possible to start the explorer.exe process in high priority? That would be the golden egg for me... or somehow setup the system to always set explorer.exe to high priority, like winlogon.exe and csrss.exe are.
