  1. Oh how true... I used to punish my cat when he kept on waking me up at 2 in the morning by doing something similar... I would fill the bathtub with cold-ish water and put him in before closing the glass door. The edges of the bathtub are slippery enough that he could never hold himself out of the water... crude, but effective. Very good ones.
  2. Yep, that's pretty much it. Copy the files from the install CD onto your hard drive. Update the files, and then burn them back onto a CD for future installs. This doesn't just apply to XP either. You can do this with Windows 2000 and the Office line as well. Now... the big question that you might have... why? A slipstreamed install will be fully up to date with those security hotfixes/service packs that you would otherwise need to download from Windows Update. Hope this helps!
  3. Pretty nice. In future, just post your screenshot in the Monthly Desktop section. More people will look there.

    Xbox 2

It looks like Microsoft is playing the numbers game with the XBox2... with the 3.5GHz processor... to make it "faster" than the PS3 which might have a lower clock speed processor. Ultimately what makes the gaming system is the games that are made for it. That's why PS2 is still doing better as a gaming system than XBox. A large number of XBox sales have been from people who make a LinuXBox, something Microsoft isn't all to happy about... (but probably something that I'll be doing in a while...)
  5. Where did you get those numbers? The system reads disk space in base2, i.e. in multiples of 1024 (2^10) bytes. Therefore 1GB = 1024MB You can work out the multiples from there. This is always how I've done my parititons (or rounded up one step in the software) and they've always come out as nice numbers in Windows.
  6. Hey everyone, I just returned the case yesterday and picked up the Antec case mentioned... WOW! This case looks really nice and I'm truly surprised by the amount of space inside. The screwless drive rail system that this case has was a little confusing, as well as the fact that the mounting screws for the mobo were totally different than those that were in the old case (the old case had press-fit mountings vs screws in the new case). I'm truly stunned by how quiet the case is as well... almost all HD noise is gone due to the rubber dampers, and the PS is deadly quiet as well. The loudest part of the computer is the CPU fan... The nice thing about this case for me is the fact that I can upgrade it very easily. There's plenty of space inside and lots of room to adjust the cables for ample ventilation. That's another nice point about it... In the old case, the CPU temps were about 54C (130F) at idle and about 65C (150F) at load... a bit high for my likes. Now it's at 45C at idle and 54C at load... much better for an Athlon 1333MHz. Cheers!
  7. It has to do with the way that Windows handles wildcards. I think that it reads the command: del *.txt as to delete anything that contains the string ".txt" in it, thereby including test.txt2. I'm not quite sure as to why the newer version would do this... I can imagine that it might screw up some people's programs...
  8. Man! that thing is so fast!!! Maybe you should put some speed holes in it too! And a spoiler! OOO and a muffler!
  9. It's at the Aqua-Soft forums. Look for Virtual Console. Link It helps everyone read the threads better if you quote the person that you read from in your post. Either that or tag the beginning of the post with something like "@PersonA" to let people know who the message is directed to. Just a note for the future.
  10. Man... AveDesk just gets better and better. A guy just released an alpha version of a desklet that lets you have a command shell on your dekstop. Along with SysStats 2.5 (also recently released), it's unbeatable! Look See!
  11. Välkommen! Have fun learning all there is to know here!
  12. $40-70 CAD... which works out to about $35 USD... Still... I'm gonna head out to the depot tomorrow and get this case/PS.
  13. I've tried all kinds of Windows-Expose programs out there, but I haven't found any that have the same smooth-sliding features that Macs have. That kind of rendering power just isn't possible for the typical computer wihtout making specific calls to the graphics card.
  14. Grr... Very Grr.. I just headed out to the local NCIX depot to see if I could get a new case/PS for my girlfriend's old computer. The guy at NCIX said that some problems that I was having were probably due to a shoddy power supply. Since a new PS costs $40-70 anyways, why not just get one that comes with a case? So I did... and guess what... the case that I opted for is meant for mATX motherboards... while I have an ATX mobo... BAH!!! And the store isn't open tomorrow... so that means that I'll have to return it on Monday... after all my classes... *grumble* Just a little vent session there....
  15. Does it have to be through a USB stick? Why can't you use the Shared Folders features instead?
  16. Umm... yeah... right... so incredibly random... totally not something I'd expect here.
  17. How long does it take to shut down when you're in safe mode?
  18. I don't think that this will ever see its way into a MS based computer because of the way that graphics are displayed while you're at the desktop. In a Windows-based computer, the graphics are still handled by the CPU. Look at the CPU usage when you drag a window around. In a Mac, the graphics are truly handled by the GPU. This can be done because Apple keeps very close tabs on the hardware that goes into their computers, and therefore can write the proper code to handle complex graphics like Expose. Until Windows integrates graphics related operations into graphics card system calls, we won't see anything like that... (well... we might if they just rely on the stupidly fast processors of tomorrow...)
  19. To clean out the Windows Temp files on startup, you can download a small app called CleanIt. On its first run, it will ask you for your startup directory. Then, every time you start the computer, it will delete everything in the temp directory for you. As for temporary internet files, I could have sworn that IE has a setting buried somewhere that deletes the files on program close. Don't quote me on that though. Hope this helps!
  20. BAH!!!! You @&*#^@#.... I thought I did a perfect parallel park in that game with my time... and I don't have the time to play that right now... grr... very grr... Good job though!
  21. If you can use the Luna Theme, then you'd be able to throw another theme on there that would look a lot prettier (that shade of blue gets on my nerves...). AveDesk is a nice addon to the desktop that doesn't take up a lot of resources, but provides a lot of information, such as drive space, recycle bin usage, etc. Check it out! Very nice Crispy! It may be plain, but it's pretty... simple is good! Btw, what media player is that? It looks a lot like Winamp with the MMD3 skin, but not quite... Cheers!
  22. Winamp is probably what you'd want then. It's got a very nice Media Library and doesn't take up very much resources. I've never looked back to WMP since I switched ages ago.
  23. No, that's not what he meant. Take a quick read through the thread. He was having problems with his Omniquad Firewall after he applied a MS Update. When he uninstalled the update, all was well again. He said that the update was meant to stop firewalls and programs from working unless they had been "approved" by Microsoft.
  24. Hey everyone, Has anyone heard of any news (apparently a year old) regarding a patch that Microsoft has or will release where it will prevent freeware from running? Apparently, software developers will have to include a portion of code to "allow" their programs to be run on XP. Any programs that don't have this code won't run at all. I personally think that this is a very stange idea... but it was brought up to me by a member of another forum... here is a link to the thread where this was brought up. Link Any leads? Thanks.
  25. All of these processors are limited to desktops. I personally think that the Pentium-M processors are the best ever made, considering that the lastest versions use about one-third the power of a 3.2GHz P4-HT and are able to keep up, toe-to-toe with any of the standard processors out there. Not to mention the obvious advantage of Intel's SpeedStep technology to give laptop users 5 hours of battery life with average usage (vs 2 hours with P4 and 1.5hours with AMD).
