  1. Maybe to clarify a part of what has been posted till now. The OEM versions of some XP install (NOT "recovery") CD's from some leading OEM's are often modified. Dell (and to a lesser extent HP) has been reknown for these (often senseless) modifications. Such CD's may "play good" with nlite (and with any other third party tool, including the UDC) or they may cause some issues. Since there is no real "catalog" of such modified OEM CD's (and possibly they exist in a zillion versions) it is possible that a third party tool (that works fine with an "official" MS XP install CD) has some quirks when used on a OEM one. Usually (but not necessarily) a pre-SP3 OEM CD, once successfully updated through integration to SP3 level becomes "good" in - say - 99% of cases, but your specific OEM disc, especially since it's a DELL , may well belong to the remaining 1%. As an example, when these OEM CD's are used to build a PE 1.x, a couple specific DELL fixes are needed, see: http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=15138 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=15138&st=29 jaclaz
  2. From what I understand about UPXed programs (and not necessarily related to the topic at hand or to the specific tools/utilities) is that they use a lot more memory than their "plain" correspondent ones. As such, it is strongly advised to NOT UPX programs when the scope is to have it run on low-memory machines (at least this is what experiments in PE 1.x's led us to believe) Also AFAIK there is not a definite answer about UPX, sometimes the compressed file works sometimes it does not, sometimes it may seem to be working but it doesn't actually work when a particular function is called. As always: jaclaz
  3. Don't want to gatecrash the party , but maybe if we could talk of actual problems (as opposed to non-problems ) we may go further . http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm Unofficial Windows ME Boot Disk Maker v1.2 32-bit</A> [603 KB] creates a startup floppy containing Windows ME boot files. link is broken, but the tool can be found - example - here: http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=1130 jaclaz
  4. I don't know, the actual contents of the archives seem like very different though all dated 26-12-2001. RegUtils.7z\RegUtils\RegiStrip\Regstrip.exe is UPXed to 171008 bytes. once unUPXed it is 477696 bytes rgst0052.lzh\Regstrip.exe is 478208 bytes RegUtils.7z\RegUtils\RegCon\Regcon.exe is UPXed to 127488 bytes AND there is also an external UNLHA32.DLL once unUPXed it is 378880 bytes rgcon311.lzh\Regcon.exe is 379392 bytes It wouldn't be the first time than UPXed executable shows memory issues, it is very possible that it's just a matter of unUPXing the "English" executables. jaclaz
  5. I can see two possible different kind of issues: the glitch about the formatting maybe "localized" to a single (marginal) issue and you can workaround it using (say) a PE to pre-partition/format the hard disk the error message is (strange as it might seem ) accurate and actually *somehow*, either through nlite or because "wrong" (no offence intended ) settings/changes to the source (or even possibly something not entirely "kosher" in the source)The risk is that if the real condition is #2, sooner or later during the install another issue will happen. If I were you I would try re-attempting it from scratch, using WinsetupFromUSB or another tool and (for the sake of the test) either integrating ONLY the AHCI/SATA driver (and adding to it or removing NOTHING else), You could even try to not integrate anything and use a F6 floppy image for the AHCI/SATA driver and either Firadisk or WinVblock, like here: http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/install-xp-from-an-iso jaclaz P.S.: Oops, sorry, had not refreshed the browser, happy it is already solved
  6. Good . Just for the record, those two utils are still online BUT only in the Japanes (original) version. The Regstrip is here: http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/win95/util/se097083.html http://ftp.vector.co.jp/pack/win95/util/env/rgst0052.lzh The Regcon is here: http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/win95/util/se106300.html http://ftp.vector.co.jp/pack/win95/util/env/rgcon311.lzh This info is posted because at the time jds had issues with the English "patched" version: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/104871-puzzling-registry-size-issue/?p=967096 it is possible that the "original" works better jaclaz PS: just in case the mediafire links expires, I am attaching the English version loblo posted RegUtils.7z
  7. Yep : that's it! I could not remember the Regcompact name . jaclaz
  8. A possible answer to the question you DID NOT ask : http://droidlessons.com/how-to-install-non-market-third-party-apps-on-android/ https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/ http://download.cnet.com/android/antivirus-software/3150-2239_4-0.html http://www.eset.com/me/download/home/detail/family/25/ jaclaz
  9. sure seems less busy to me. Cheers and Regards Well, you should compare a screenshot on the program site, against a screenshot on the program site : sure that seems more busy than yours (mainly because you made a screenshot when not connected to a FTP and not during a file transfer. But of course Filezilla is a very good program , only seemingly it is not anymore supporting XP (and as such it is worth nothing to me ): whilst: Additionally, WinSCP 5.5.2 Portable 4.3 Mb, FileZilla_3.7.4.1_win32.zip 7.0 Mb jaclaz
  10. No, that should be last version, see: http://www.createwindow.com/wininfo/regclean.htm I cannot remember if also on Windows 9x/Me there is the possibility of the Registry becoming fragmented (and a tool to compact it, like ERUNT/Regopt is for NT systems) jaclaz
  11. See: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/170850-aero-glass-for-win81-121/page-35#entry1072114 I would say rather "visible" on this same page. jaclaz

    Bootable XP disk

Yes and no. Any Virtual Machine (specific, detailed make/version) will be built with some "Virtual Hardware" coded inside it. As an example, VmWare virtual machines generally default to a "virtual" LSI SCSI subsystem (but there is a specific option to use a - still simulated - "normal" IDE bus (and virtual devices). Such VMs usually provide (for the supported operating systems) the specific drivers needed. It seems to me like you have two separate steps before you. The first one is to *somehow* make your "upgrade disk a "full install disk". The second is to add to it (if needed) the AHCI/SATA drivers that the "real" machine(s) you want to install it to might need. Whether objective #1 is "legal" is highly debatable, however what you can do is start from the actual files on your original CD/DVD. If you start following these threads (seemingly unrelated): http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16381&hl= http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120423-how-do-i-make-a-bootable-xp-cd-out-of-the-i386-folder/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/91907-cannot-access-cd-containing-windows-xp-installation-files/ in those the scope was to make an XP install CD with the files from the \I386 directory that most manufacturers (particularly of laptops) used to have on hard disk in case the original CD was lost (or was never provided). You are in a very similar situation, though you have an actual "upgrade" CD. If you are OK with a looong an winding thread , this one goes into the most small details (at the expense of a lot of words ): http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=24161&hl= To do the test I would personally use Qemu (actually Qemu Manager) because it is a Virtual Machine that by default uses the most "normal" virtual hardware around, and - while it's operation will probably result slower than other alternatives - has a simulated hardware that is well recognized by *any* OS, here: https://web.archive.org/web/20120506095037/http://www.davereyn.co.uk/qem/setupqemuk70.exe jaclaz
  13. I am the kind of person that does not go around calling you offending names, even if you are not and won't probably become my friend. As said different perception of what politeness or good manners are. In other words, if you were a kid and you called any of your pals like that, would your mom have washed your mouth with soap? Or, if you go to the local pub, and you exchange opinions with someone you happen to meet there, do you - should your opinions diverge - call any of the people there with any of those names? And if yes do you think likely that you will risk starting a fight? jaclaz
  14. I guess there is some confusion between DS-DOS and Dos Plus: http://www.trademarkia.com/ds-dos-73492079.html http://www.old-computers.com/museum/forum.asp?c=473&st=1 And very possibly the "full name" for one of the DS-DOS versions was "(Michtron)DS-DOS 2.11 Plus" http://ebook.pldworld.com/_eBook/dosref33/CHAPTER.008 jaclaz
  15. On the contrary, I find your take on the matter exceptionally good :: still, facts (measurable/measured) should be separated and distinguished from opinions and preferences. jaclaz
  16. I simply found "curious" how you feel free to call people names there and otherwise thank them here. Personally I find very inappropriate to go somewhere else calling people names, I guess it is just a matter of different education/politeness standards. And no, thanks, but I won't become member of a board where basic rules/conventions about reciprocal respect and politeness are ignored, which of course doesn't mean that people may not have different opinions, but from there to directly and plainly offend the people whose opinion is different from yours, there is some difference. jaclaz
  17. May I add, in passing by, how in the US a judge is usually elected by the people, and being the career of a judge very interesting (culturally and socially) and quite rewarding (financially) it is not-so-common the case that someone who managed to be elected as judge chooses to become ex-judge (unless the people decided to elect someone else). On the other hand, while in charge a judge is to all effects a representative of the people, while once he/she is an ex-judge, he/she is only an ex-judge. His/her opinion on any legal matter may well be authoritative, legally sound, accurate and what not, still it is and remains an opinion, without the dignity that a decision of a "real" judge has in court. Additionally, an "ex-judge" may well be an absolutely unbiased, honest person (and I believe the large majority of judges and ex-judges are like that), but he/she could well be if not outright a crook, somewhat sensible to bribing or simply strongly biased. Maybe the good MS guys should put together, besides the ex-judge opinion, a private Grand Jury . jaclaz
  18. Why should you have "a problem" (as long as you connect properly GROUND to ALL equipment involved)? Review point #7 of READ-ME-FIRST: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143880-seagate-barracuda-720011-read-me-first/ and this post here (if the above is not enough): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807-the-solution-for-seagate-720011-hdds/page-185#entry1064717 and thereby given links. NO. There is a sticky EXACTLY for this doubt: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/150215-dont-even-think-of-swapping-pcbs-on-720011/ You CANNOT exchage PCB's on "modern" hard disks (including the 7200.11). As a matter of fact you can, as long as you transplant properly the ROM, example: http://stores.ebay.com/hddSupplier/PCB-Swap-Guide.html Please consider how if you are here asking about making a PCB swap it means that you ARE NOT able to do it (CATCH22 ) and you WILL NOT be able to do it until you will put together a not-so-basic amount of knowledge and experience in soldering and more generally in electronics repairs. As said your problem (whatever it is) seems like being NOT a BSY or a LBA0 (but you haven't provided yet ANY meaningful detail/info to confirm or deny this hypothesis) . jaclaz
  19. A layman comparison that I personally find interesting: http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeehouse/Test-shows-Windows-7-is-5x-slower-than-XP-in-UI-and-apps-load-slower-than-in-Vista As said elsewhere : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/145209-the-smallest-possible-size-of-bootsdi/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/145209-the-smallest-possible-size-of-bootsdi/?p=933421 jaclaz
  20. Nice, very, very nice : OT , but if I would be in the NSA that would be a nice new project to build upon a public proxy "translation" service. jaclaz
  21. Curious how in other places you publicly badmouth some of these same people.... jaclaz
  22. I will repeat what I said before, and that bhplt expanded in detail : try with LESS things added/integrated, first. There may be on a DVD a known issue about it's size. Basically a number of files in the"early" booting part may not be able to "reach" beyond a given LBA address. You may want to check the actual build. See: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20248 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16802 but the errors I have seen related to this are different. The STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error seems more connected to a corrupted file: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/101096/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314474/en-us but with Windows errors you never really know . I personally DO NOT suggest to use IMGBURN to "burn from folder", ONLY to burn from .iso to physical CD/DVD, an install CD/DVD .iso should - in my perverted mind - be built by mkisofs (or oscdimage) ONLY, and with the "proper" settings", I seem to understand that you changed these settings for mkisofs? Just in case "good" set of settings is the following: mkisofs -v -iso-level 4 -l -D -d -J -joliet-long -volid "XPSP3" -A XPSP3/MKISOFS -sysid "Win32" -b bootsect.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -hide boot.catalog -hide bootsect.bin -allow-multidot -o .\whatever\XPSP3.iso ROOTor: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20248&st=0&p=136024entry136024 Optionally one could use a "pe_sort.txt", if the issue about "high" LBA is confirmed. See: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=8053 jaclaz
  23. Well what happens if you deploy cmdkey to the target machine and run it remotely from the machine itself? Still, it seems to me foolish to wait for the issue to happen and repair the problem as opposed to preventing the issue to happen at all. I have no idea about (and I am actually not at all interested in the details of) the management procedures that you have on that site/whatever, but I have rarely seen someone proposing a no or little cost enhancement capable of preventing the creation of a "support ticket" having it denied/not approved. You see, usually nooone actually cares about what the IT/support people do , but if a "support ticket" is created, it means that there is an alteration in the workflow of the people that actually work to produce something (or that are supposed to do that), i.e. it means "saved money" or "less downtime" for the company. In any case, you asked about your problem, not one but three possible solutions were proposed for you to test, sorry if none can be - for whatever reason - be tested/used in your environment. jaclaz
  24. It must then be a coincidence that that same program worked for everyone (we are talking of tens if not hundreds of thousands users) since several years, exclusively to "tweak" a 2K or XP source and noone experienced that same bug. jaclaz
  25. I would say that quotas are intrinsically part of the filesystem and low-level enough, but I may well be wrong on this. Still no suggestions for alternate MFT based filesystems. jaclaz
