Windowa XP Installation process
jaclaz replied to xilodynamit's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Most of the complexities are - I believe - due to some limitations in the booting mechanism of NT based systems and to some (BTW senseless) hardcoding that had some reason in the early days of NT (the setup process is essentially the same since then) but make much less sense in 2K and even less in XP. However, JFYI (not really-really useful, but maybe interesting to you), some experiments were made when developing "install XP from USB" methods, though all in all they did not provide particular advantages: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/130689-guide-install-winxp-from-hdd-or-usb-drive-or-cd/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/131103-win-ntbt-can-be-omitted/ In order to understand some of the references in the above you will need to read this (very long ) "historical" thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/ jaclaz -
Windowa XP Installation process

Yes and no. The GUI mode is more than anything else a "PE". And sure, once you have made the ~ls and ~bt dirs what is booted is the hard disk. As a matter of fact the "traditional" (and IMHO "right") way to install a NT system was to NOT install it from CD, but rather use a WINNT32 with makelocalsource and noreboot: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/77526-installing-xp-on-vaio-wo-cd-or-floppy/?p=527214 jaclaz -
I haven't checked the links dencorso posted (which will surely be good ones ) but additionally to them, do READ this one: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html (the "Repair install" has always worked for me) You could also try a "Sysprep" approach, but on a higly customized install it is likely to create an issue. In any case, and whichever approach you choose make sure to have a way to go back (a dd-like image of the disk where the OS is installed would be my personally preferred solution). The Adaptec SCSI card may actually represent an advantage, as it is a "whole" external block that is moved from the old PC to the new one, and this may even help in not triggering the WPA : http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm jaclaz

No. ImageX ONLY runs under a WIndows NT based system (either "installed" or PE), as well DISM. The Windows NT version of wimlib (and companying tools/scripts) will ONLY run under a WIndows NT based system (either "installed" or PE). The Linux version of wimlib (and companying tools/scripts) will ONLY run under a Linux OS based system (either "installed" or "live"). jaclaz
-
Yes, of course you will really *need* only the wimlib-imagex.exe and all the .dll's. Additionally/optionally there is a sort of GUI wrapper for it, that might come handy during experiments: http://reboot.pro/files/file/485-wimlib-imagex-command-line-compiler/ jaclaz

I know , I reposted it only as a confirmation that: 1) it worked in at least one case 2) it is all you can do AFAIK Doesn't the good ol'trick of devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539/en-us work on 7? (to have them listed in "Device Manager", I don't think in "Network Adapters") jaclaz

No. Imagex is a command line BUT NOT DOS program. It needs to be run (besides a "full" Windows NT 6 or later) in a PE 2.x or later. The Waik for Windows 7 will produce a PE 3.x, the PE 2.x is Vista based. You can make a "basic" PE quickly by using the QuickPE project: http://reboot.pro/topic/18744-quickpe/ http://reboot.pro/files/file/340-quickpe/ For the record ImageX was never considered a suitable tool for the backup of Vista or later (though it will normally work fine for XP) because of some issues with hardlinks/softlinks and it is now superseded by the DISM command anyway. If you want an alternate way you can have a mini-distro of Linux with Sinchronicity's Wimlib tools (besided using it's Windows version in a PE): http://reboot.pro/topic/18345-wimlib-with-imagex-implementation/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/wimlib/ jaclaz

You can try resetting the TCP/IP stack, see: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/162399-dns-is-getting-confused-using-dual-nics/ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357 I believe that's all you can do. jaclaz

Simpler, just two steps : start begging in the street until you get 3 (three) or more US$ or do some work in order to save US$ 3 (or equivalent in your local currency) send them to Tihiy in exchange of a license Please understand how this method is to be preferred as you won't have to share a lot of personal data with the grumpy Italian backer (yours truly ) and this, beside saving some work for him , will avoid the IRS inspection (or equivalent in your country) that he would otherwise promote, fiscal inspection that would include you, your partner (if any) and all your family and relatives including first and second cousins. jaclaz

In other words Tihiy should strongly increase the license price in order to be able to afford giving away for free to students? I will gladly contribute however. Please send me the names and the .edu address of up to 50 students attending college that cannot afford to pay US$ 2.99 for a license of StartisBack. As soon as I will additionally receive proof that they did not (in the least six months): ever had a drink at a pubever had a coffe at a Starbucks (or corresponding local coffee house chain)ever paid a meal in a pizza house or restaurant in excess of US$ 10 more than the "standard" BigMac price AND that they do not possess more than one device among: LaptopTabletSmartphoneAND that they have: no more than two USB sticksno more than one external USB hard diskno TV sets with screen larger than 24" I will pay Tihiy directly the fee for a license in their name. jaclaz

Interesting Theory - Rain of Asteroids Melted Early Earth

The missing link should be to: http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-early-earth-bombardment-20140730-story.html For the record, I am instinctively among the group of the "not everyone", and I am not going to buy it : it "sounds" really a bit too "stretched". jaclaz -
I would be not so sure about the bolded part. I like to believe that the "top guys" at MS do not actually think at all. They either "fancy" something or they throw dices to choose. Just like gamblers, sometimes they win, sometimes they loose. But they still need to learn what to throw away, what to keep, when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em, when to walk away and when to run.... and even worse than that they actually attempted to count money when sittin' at the table jaclaz

The MS kb referenced in that post is this one: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193/en-us Which: Most probably the original question that is "vague": Generated the answer to this question only: Which BTW is anyway not the "right" answer (for XP), that kb provides only a way to temporarily disable the SFC/WFP, and you wouild normally use the empty SFCfiles.dll trick or an edited SFC.DLL: http://www.vorck.com/windows/software.html Sometimes it is important to ask the "right" question, besides what MagicAndre posted: http://www.flos-freeware.ch/doc/notepad2-Replacement.html http://code.kliu.org/misc/notepad2/ You seemingly slipped on a chocolate covered banana http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/put-down-the-chocolate-covered-banana.html JFYI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_File_Protection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Resource_Protection and: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155910-taking-back-the-registry-from-trustedinstaller/ jaclaz

You might appreciate how I use to categorize MS OS's : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171220-redundant-ms-notification-about-xp-eos/?p=1070777 As I see it, the "common" point is that on one side there is this new "one size fits all" (BTW "wrong") paradigm as we have seen exacerbated on Windows Operating Systems "evolution", on the other side there is the "specialized" versioning (that BTW gets wrong when a non-standard is used for the "automagical" detection) like in the "web" case Trip pointed out. Specifically, if the usage paradigm for a mouse user would have comprised a horizontal scroll, we would have by now mice with a horizontal scroll wheel, whilst scrolling horizontally by "swiping" is a common gesture for smartphone users, and even "more" logical (for those used to read "real" books, as it is similar to turning pages on a book) on a tablet. As I see it, it is like If you want/need a new suit and you have only two choices: a. mass produced "one size fits all" solutions b. hand made suits by a tailor that - always - gets the wrong measures There is simply no chance that your "custom" experience will ever be "better" than when you had more choices available, unless - when you can - like in the case of NoelC and Windows 8, you have the possibility and capability of getting the one size fits all suit and then re-tailor it yourself adapting it to your needs/likings, but then there is no merit in the crazy industry, only in your own abilities at making it fit nicely. jaclaz

Windowa XP Installation process
jaclaz replied to xilodynamit's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
To be picky, not exactly-exactly. The bootfix.bin tries to access the internal hard disk MBR AND IF it founds not proper partition data in it (a primary partition marked as "acive") it doesn't show, if on the other hand it finds valid data in it, then it shows the prompt to press a key for booting from the internal hard disk. Basically the idea is that when you boot from the CD for the first time with a blank hard disk inside the PC, it doesn't show, while if you "forget" the CD in the drive, it prompts you to press the key within 5 seconds. Winnt.sif Unattend.txt migrate.inf Txtsetup.sif ... See if these fit: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc786944(v=ws.10).aspx http://gosh.msfn.org/intro.htm jaclaz -
Yes and no. There is only one other way to go if you adopt an "old" convention, induced by the "old" square/rectangular shape of the display, which is very "old" since it derives by the shape of a sheet of paper that derives from the shape of waxed or clay tablets.... In a square/rectangular shape it is instinctive to "move" on the Surface (pardon me the pun ) along either a horizontal or vertical axes. If they really wanted to make something new, they could have made a hexagonal (or triangular) display. This would provide alternative scrolling ways that might result attractive to a great many rebellious youngsters .... If the idea is to innovate, then do really new things. jaclaz

The best third-party parental control
jaclaz replied to Darianna's topic in Networks and the Internet
So - surprisingly - the best parenting software is still the good ol' presence of a real parent and child education within the family. As a side note, IF a parent actually needs to ask about how to prevent a child from accessing some internet sites, you can be sure that the child will manage to workaround that provision, one way or the other. The good thing about implementing some form of software control is that the kid will learn something in his/her attempts to bypass this control, so, in a way, using such a software - while not preventing but only at the most delaying the access to the "forbidden" sites - constitutes a way to increase the computer related knowledge of the yute(s), much more than any Computer Laboratory at school will be able to do. jaclaz -

jaclaz replied to Darianna's topic in Networks and the Internet
Well, this should prove that you are "human" :. You see, whenever a user at his/her first post replies to a "vague" question like the one OP asked, to recommend a Commercial piece of software, there is always a (high) probability that it is either Spam or Astroturfing of some kind . It's a bit of time since there is this scheme where a new user posts a question and a few days later another user (also at his/her first post) replies recommending product x or product y. While most of this kind of posts/threads are deleted/removed, form time to time some are kept. Example: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/170538-what-is-exact-way-for-how-to-convert-pst-to-nsf/ jaclaz -
Well, what you want to do is to "escape" the percent sign. http://www.robvanderwoude.com/escapechars.php Since you are redirecting output to a file, you can "group" lines. It is not (IMHO) a good idea to use the .bat extension, unless of course you are working on DOS/Win9x/Me the extension for batch files under any NT based system is .cmd. All in all, I would rewrite your small batch as: @echo off(echo @echo offecho echo Hiecho echo 1.^) Option1echo echo 2.^) Option2echo echo 3.^) Option3echo if %%selection%%==1 goto :opt1echo if %%selection%%==2 goto :opt2echo if %%selection%%==3 goto :opt3)> example.cmdas it is "cleaner". Please note that since I enclosed the whole set of ECHO commands in brackets, I had to escape the brackets in the numbered list by using a caret. You can redirect the output of PAUSE command to nul and ECHO instead something else, like: @ECHO OFFECHO This is a "normal" PAUSEPAUSEECHO This is a "custom" PAUSEECHO.ECHO Please press key "\" to go onPAUSE>NULhttp://www.robvanderwoude.com/redirection.php jaclaz

Monsieur de La Palice - again. A crappily designed site is crappy. <- not "news". Call me "old" as much as you want, but I would additionally expect a University site to show yutes[1] in a §@ç#ing class or laboratory, while being §@ç#ing busy at studying, listening to lessons or doing experiments. The images of a bunch of guys/gals standing on a lawn or walking by the seashore reminds me more of "fun" or "entertainment", something that may do well for a kid's summer camp , but not for a place where you supposedly have to work (and work hard) for several years, and where the result of this hard work is likely to affect all your life's career. As a side note, I would not enroll for - say - English Literature on a site that has: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alum jaclaz [1] See: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104952/quotes?item=qt0404568

XP 64-bit installaton onto an USB3-Stick
jaclaz replied to Testdriver's topic in Install Windows from USB
Well, you can clutch at straws alright , but you are slipping down a bit at each and every post. A PE is NOT a portable install, it is actually not even a XP, it is a PE. Of course there are no particular issues in having a PE (which is NOT an XP) on a USB device, and it is very probable that you managed to have a PE built through a Winbuilder project on a USB stick. There is no issue in having a PE 1.x get assigned *any* drive letter, the "X:" is just the default, JFYI: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=21682 http://reboot.pro/topic/1938-how-to-change-the-drive-letter-assigned-to-pe/ The "pagefile" issue is a "relative" one. I have WIndows installs running since years with NO pagefile at all, but let's not start the usual flamewar Pagefile (and System Managed while you are at it) vs. NO pagefie vs. fixed size pagefile, please : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/156944-delete-not-clear-pagefile-at-shutdown/ JFYI, I was not thinking of the pagefile in itself (which I did not mention, I used - not so casually - the generic "some advantages"). What I had in mind was more about other possible issues, namely Windows Update and System Restore: http://reboot.pro/topic/9461-page-file-in-usb-hard-disk/?p=132533 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=24419 jaclaz -
