Good. JFYI, although a "RAW" image is preferred (as it will contain ALL information) if you are sure-sure that you have not any files that may need to be undeleted or recovered, you can get away with doing a WIM image (thanks to the wimlib library you don't even need a specific Windows version) which typically will compress to 1/3 or less than original/source. A suitable app (freeware) is Clonedisk: http://labalec.fr/erwan/?page_id=42 http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=8480 jaclaz

Sure , and at a 95% probability it is just a simple filesystem corruption that CHKDSK will be able to fix easily, I was commenting on the statement in itself, without hinting that in your specific case a failed hard disk is likely to have happened. If you prefer, I do believe that in your case the hard disk has not failed, but the fact that it has not failed is not connected in any way to the (relatively short) time it was in operation. Carpenter's example: During inspection of a house: I don't think this roof will collapse any soon, it was built only three years ago. <- makes sense During inspection of a house that suffered from extensive fire damages: I don't think this roof will collapse any soon, it was built only three years ago. <- makes no sense I don't think this roof will collapse any soon. <- OK in both the above cases . jaclaz

Try VBEMP: http://www.bearwindows.reboot.pro/vbe9x.htm http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163436-vbemp-9x-with-3d-aceleration/ or the SciTech driver. https://web.archive.org/web/20030725183829/http://www1.scitechsoft.com/products/enterprise/free_titles.html jaclaz -
Any "in use" HAL will have "hal.dll" filename (but if you check it's properties you will find out how it is a renamed file), see: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/solved-missing-hal-dll-issue-416851.html and: http://windowsitpro.com/windows/how-can-i-determine-which-hardware-abstraction-layer-hal-running-my-computer jaclaz

Not to put you down but that kind of reasoning makes no sense whatever . Hard disks may fail, as well as filesystems residing on *any* media. Last character in the above sentence is a "full stop" or "period". They may fail within the first few weeks, within the first few months, within the first few years. They will be working fine and then, one day, they will stop working properly. Whether the issue will be and easy fixable one or more generally a fixable one or not is another thing Especially on a laptop, there is no reliable predictive algorithm or calculation on a hard disk drive life. jaclaz

Ow, come on . Everybody builds PE's all day, it is not like brain surgery (it is more like rocket science ). You need a "basic" PE without all the *unneeded* bells and whistles (that are what usually make projects become more complex and thus prone to errors). If you try either QuickPE: http://reboot.pro/files/file/340-quickpe/ or MistyPE: http://reboot.pro/files/file/357-mistype/ you will find yourself with a working PE 3.x (or 4.xx/5.xx) in no time. That will be EXACTLY the case. A failed "transplant" will very likely create a "Frankestein Registry" with the OS not capable to boot on either boards or anyway the result will be a half-botched one. Go back and re-read why exactly having an image of the disk is (besides always a nice thing to have) a MUST in this case. jaclaz

Well, the HAL issue is not a real issue, you can also use the "normal" /HAL option in BOOT.INI to change it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833721/en-us http://www.vernalex.com/guides/sysprep/hal.shtml Of course you will need a PE of some kind or however something capable of editing the BOOT.INI or change in advance the BOOT.INI to include all options. The method linked to before - as said - works fine in my experience, but there are other methods, that one amounts more or less to the "official" MS one in the case of a working "old" or "from" motherboard, but you can also "fake" that the "old" motherboard is dead and use the second method : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125 Among the alternatives, there is OfflineSysprep: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showforum=43 http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=22064 Though there could be an issue with HAL's coming from updates/hotfixes: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23350 A clone (or image) has nothing to do with the BUS the mass storage device uses, it is simply a sector-by-sector copy of the device of course you can clone a SCSI disk to a (same size or larger) PATA/IDE or SATA disk, though nowadays it is usually more convenient to make an image instead. jaclaz

Windowa XP Installation process
jaclaz replied to xilodynamit's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Most of the complexities are - I believe - due to some limitations in the booting mechanism of NT based systems and to some (BTW senseless) hardcoding that had some reason in the early days of NT (the setup process is essentially the same since then) but make much less sense in 2K and even less in XP. However, JFYI (not really-really useful, but maybe interesting to you), some experiments were made when developing "install XP from USB" methods, though all in all they did not provide particular advantages: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/130689-guide-install-winxp-from-hdd-or-usb-drive-or-cd/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/131103-win-ntbt-can-be-omitted/ In order to understand some of the references in the above you will need to read this (very long ) "historical" thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/ jaclaz -
Windowa XP Installation process
jaclaz replied to xilodynamit's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Yes and no. The GUI mode is more than anything else a "PE". And sure, once you have made the ~ls and ~bt dirs what is booted is the hard disk. As a matter of fact the "traditional" (and IMHO "right") way to install a NT system was to NOT install it from CD, but rather use a WINNT32 with makelocalsource and noreboot: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/77526-installing-xp-on-vaio-wo-cd-or-floppy/?p=527214 jaclaz -
I haven't checked the links dencorso posted (which will surely be good ones ) but additionally to them, do READ this one: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html (the "Repair install" has always worked for me) You could also try a "Sysprep" approach, but on a higly customized install it is likely to create an issue. In any case, and whichever approach you choose make sure to have a way to go back (a dd-like image of the disk where the OS is installed would be my personally preferred solution). The Adaptec SCSI card may actually represent an advantage, as it is a "whole" external block that is moved from the old PC to the new one, and this may even help in not triggering the WPA : http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm jaclaz

No. ImageX ONLY runs under a WIndows NT based system (either "installed" or PE), as well DISM. The Windows NT version of wimlib (and companying tools/scripts) will ONLY run under a WIndows NT based system (either "installed" or PE). The Linux version of wimlib (and companying tools/scripts) will ONLY run under a Linux OS based system (either "installed" or "live"). jaclaz
-
Yes, of course you will really *need* only the wimlib-imagex.exe and all the .dll's. Additionally/optionally there is a sort of GUI wrapper for it, that might come handy during experiments: http://reboot.pro/files/file/485-wimlib-imagex-command-line-compiler/ jaclaz

I know , I reposted it only as a confirmation that: 1) it worked in at least one case 2) it is all you can do AFAIK Doesn't the good ol'trick of devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539/en-us work on 7? (to have them listed in "Device Manager", I don't think in "Network Adapters") jaclaz

No. Imagex is a command line BUT NOT DOS program. It needs to be run (besides a "full" Windows NT 6 or later) in a PE 2.x or later. The Waik for Windows 7 will produce a PE 3.x, the PE 2.x is Vista based. You can make a "basic" PE quickly by using the QuickPE project: http://reboot.pro/topic/18744-quickpe/ http://reboot.pro/files/file/340-quickpe/ For the record ImageX was never considered a suitable tool for the backup of Vista or later (though it will normally work fine for XP) because of some issues with hardlinks/softlinks and it is now superseded by the DISM command anyway. If you want an alternate way you can have a mini-distro of Linux with Sinchronicity's Wimlib tools (besided using it's Windows version in a PE): http://reboot.pro/topic/18345-wimlib-with-imagex-implementation/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/wimlib/ jaclaz

Simpler, just two steps : start begging in the street until you get 3 (three) or more US$ or do some work in order to save US$ 3 (or equivalent in your local currency) send them to Tihiy in exchange of a license Please understand how this method is to be preferred as you won't have to share a lot of personal data with the grumpy Italian backer (yours truly ) and this, beside saving some work for him , will avoid the IRS inspection (or equivalent in your country) that he would otherwise promote, fiscal inspection that would include you, your partner (if any) and all your family and relatives including first and second cousins. jaclaz

In other words Tihiy should strongly increase the license price in order to be able to afford giving away for free to students? I will gladly contribute however. Please send me the names and the .edu address of up to 50 students attending college that cannot afford to pay US$ 2.99 for a license of StartisBack. As soon as I will additionally receive proof that they did not (in the least six months): ever had a drink at a pubever had a coffe at a Starbucks (or corresponding local coffee house chain)ever paid a meal in a pizza house or restaurant in excess of US$ 10 more than the "standard" BigMac price AND that they do not possess more than one device among: LaptopTabletSmartphoneAND that they have: no more than two USB sticksno more than one external USB hard diskno TV sets with screen larger than 24" I will pay Tihiy directly the fee for a license in their name. jaclaz

Interesting Theory - Rain of Asteroids Melted Early Earth

The missing link should be to: http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-early-earth-bombardment-20140730-story.html For the record, I am instinctively among the group of the "not everyone", and I am not going to buy it : it "sounds" really a bit too "stretched". jaclaz -
I would be not so sure about the bolded part. I like to believe that the "top guys" at MS do not actually think at all. They either "fancy" something or they throw dices to choose. Just like gamblers, sometimes they win, sometimes they loose. But they still need to learn what to throw away, what to keep, when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em, when to walk away and when to run.... and even worse than that they actually attempted to count money when sittin' at the table jaclaz

The MS kb referenced in that post is this one: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193/en-us Which: Most probably the original question that is "vague": Generated the answer to this question only: Which BTW is anyway not the "right" answer (for XP), that kb provides only a way to temporarily disable the SFC/WFP, and you wouild normally use the empty SFCfiles.dll trick or an edited SFC.DLL: http://www.vorck.com/windows/software.html Sometimes it is important to ask the "right" question, besides what MagicAndre posted: http://www.flos-freeware.ch/doc/notepad2-Replacement.html http://code.kliu.org/misc/notepad2/ You seemingly slipped on a chocolate covered banana http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/put-down-the-chocolate-covered-banana.html JFYI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_File_Protection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Resource_Protection and: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155910-taking-back-the-registry-from-trustedinstaller/ jaclaz

You might appreciate how I use to categorize MS OS's : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171220-redundant-ms-notification-about-xp-eos/?p=1070777 As I see it, the "common" point is that on one side there is this new "one size fits all" (BTW "wrong") paradigm as we have seen exacerbated on Windows Operating Systems "evolution", on the other side there is the "specialized" versioning (that BTW gets wrong when a non-standard is used for the "automagical" detection) like in the "web" case Trip pointed out. Specifically, if the usage paradigm for a mouse user would have comprised a horizontal scroll, we would have by now mice with a horizontal scroll wheel, whilst scrolling horizontally by "swiping" is a common gesture for smartphone users, and even "more" logical (for those used to read "real" books, as it is similar to turning pages on a book) on a tablet. As I see it, it is like If you want/need a new suit and you have only two choices: a. mass produced "one size fits all" solutions b. hand made suits by a tailor that - always - gets the wrong measures There is simply no chance that your "custom" experience will ever be "better" than when you had more choices available, unless - when you can - like in the case of NoelC and Windows 8, you have the possibility and capability of getting the one size fits all suit and then re-tailor it yourself adapting it to your needs/likings, but then there is no merit in the crazy industry, only in your own abilities at making it fit nicely. jaclaz
