Sure, how do you think they could otherwise ever have thought of making Microsoft Bob? Still the difference was that it was an alternative shell (i.e. not like removing the Windows 3.x or 8x/NT interface altogether and forcing Bob on all users): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob jaclaz

Though in "improved security" one needs to read "declared theoretically improved security not really-really confirmed by any real world data". JFYI: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/page-208#entry1070010 and: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163539-are-ms-updates-for-xp-really-necessary/ you may want to skip to here : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163539-are-ms-updates-for-xp-really-necessary/?p=1047286 jaclaz

Curiosity about Windows 7 image and SATA emulation on Controllers
jaclaz replied to koganstyle's topic in Windows 7
I mean that the IDE drivers would be normally "available", while the SATA ones for the "new" hardware may not (as said I haven't checked the specific hardware used by koganstyle), so at first boot the "generalized" image would not boot (because there are no suitable SATA drivers available in it) whilst when booted in IDE emulation the "generic" drivers are "normally" installed, as if it was a "first boot". The difference between Case 2 and Case 3 is thin, in Case2 what (sometimes) allows the loading of the IDE drivers is (possibly) a sort of "fallback", in Case 3 the image has not a "set" driver for mass storage and it just attempts to load the right one in the mini setup phase (or *whatever*) when booting. jaclaz -
Migrating Windows 7 or 8 Install from BIOS machine to Native Boot VHD
jaclaz replied to crashnburn4u's topic in Windows 8
No, that is actually the Asylum. I reside outside of it. And my gate to it is closed as there is no way (anymore) to have some meaningful exchange of ideas (apart the strictly technical field) with a number of residents. About site being for sale (or not) and/or increases or decreases of traffic (or Alexa ranking for that matters) those are essentially Nuno's business. Instead of all this (senseless) suppositions, have you actually tried registering there? No less than three new members registered today, so I believe that there are not any issue of any kind with it. jaclaz -
Ah well, if you say so . I see exactly (respectively) $29.95 and $27.95 reasons to stay clear of them, but it was nice of you to promote some Commercial software and doing so in such a direct way. jaclaz

It is interesting to learn how "98" is an odd number, and that as well "XP" is not only a number, but an odd one . I believe that in the case of Wndows 98 also "Second Edition" is considered an odd number. And of course I have rarely seen a such vast "common base", entirely unlike "new", as between Windows 95 and Windows 98 and between Windows 2000 and Windows XP. BUT, you may be interested in the moves of the short-sighted bishop and of the limping knight : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/page-11#entry996327 jaclaz

No offence intended of course, but by "professional graphics" I was talking of people that make a living ONLY through the use of Photoshop (or similar programs), it is not - I believe - anything connected with "more powerful systems" - it is more like a forma mentis, the people I met in the field are (or believe being) artists, and somehow they believe that an artist needs to also have an esthetically appealing tool (which is the Mac), they consider the sheer idea of opening a command prompt something that may ruin forever their artistic sensibility. The good thing about them is that unlike most other Mac users they don't brag at all about the Mac being better, they consider it a good, nice looking tool that works. Still in my experience, "common" Mac users tend instead, cannot say if because they are a minority, to endlessly try to explain me why the Mac is so much better, I remember a friend nailing me for more than one hour about how clever is the magnetic mechanism of some portable Macs battery charger.... . But happy to know that the good Adobe guys manage to sell Photoshop to a large number of PC users. jaclaz

Curiosity about Windows 7 image and SATA emulation on Controllers
jaclaz replied to koganstyle's topic in Windows 7
No, but you may want to start taking them . (since from what you described, you did something crazy but you were lucky and it worked . Basically a SATA controller has TWO "ID's", the first one is compatible with a "Standard IDE controller" and the second is "specific" to the controller (and need "specific" drivers), which one of the two is "exposed" to the OS depends on the BIOS settings. Case 1: Your "old" machine had it's BIOS set to IDE and thus the controller "exposed" a "generic" ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the "generic" IDE drivers. Your "new" machine had it's BIOS set to SATA and thus the controller "exposed" it's own specific ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the corespondent SATA drivers (different from the first and IF they were available) and failed to boot. As soon as you set the BIOS on the new machine in a way that it exposed the "generic" ID everything started working. Case 2: Your "old" machine had it's BIOS set to SATA and thus the controller "exposed" it's own specific ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the corespondent SATA drivers. Your "new" machine had it's BIOS set to SATA and thus the controller "exposed" it's own specific ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the correspondent SATA drivers (different from the first and IF they were available) and failed to boot. Normally an "old" install using SATA drivers would not AFAIK/AFAICR have "ready" the IDE drivers and "revert" to them if you change the BIOS to "IDE emulation mode" or the like, but it is entirely possible that during the lifetime of the "old" install it had used the "IDE" drivers and that they "remained" in the Registry <- just a possible explanation Case 3: If you "generalized" the .wim, it is possible that the "IDE" driver were available while the specific SATA ones for the new machine were not, haven't checked the hardware specs of the two machines, but if the "new" one is really "new" it is possible that Windows 7 has not the appropriate drivers "built-in" <- another possible explanation jaclaz -

Cannot say if it can be of any help with your issue, but it is possible that "between the lines" of this thread: http://reboot.pro/topic/19516-hack-bootmgr-to-boot-windows-in-bios-to-gpt/ it can be found something of use. jaclaz -
How to make Photoshop CS2 Portable? (USB)
jaclaz replied to vegettoxp's topic in Application Installs
Ask (nicely) whomever allows people to have admin access on that computer to promote your account to Admin level . Bribe someone knowing the Admin account password, give him/her some money and get the password Recover the Admin account password .Please consider how #2 and #3 may constitute (depending on the specifics of the case and/or your country's laws) a criminal offence and/or a serious misbehaviour on workplace. jaclaz -

Sure . As an example last 1:30 or so of Casino Royale (with Daniel Craig ) is IMHO worth the whole movie, "The Name's Bond. James Bond." jaclaz

Installing Windows XP SP2 using USB flash drive
jaclaz replied to Rolando46's topic in Install Windows from USB
Right questions , wrong place. The tool (and support for it ) may be found here: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/157-install-windows-from-usb/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444-how-to-install-windows-from-usb-winsetupfromusb-with-gui/ The 0.2.2 version you are using is a (very old) "previous" version of the tool, it might be better/easier, instead of attempting to "repair" that USB stick, to re-create a new one with latest version of the WinsetupFromUSB tool. jaclaz -
Sure , though a link to such estimates would be nice, the point is about professional use, for whatever reasons all the professional graphics or designers I ever met used a Mac, maybe it's just a coincidence in my little experience. jaclaz

About Munich, obviously there is nothing "technical" in the news, it is just politics. In any case in 2004 moving from XP to Linux (actually not really "Linux", but rather a custom developed Linux, more or less "nonsense" in itself) had been a courageous choice, possibly even a hazardous one, but no one, really noone can take ten years to find out it was a bad choice. Now, going back from the LiMux to XP might even make some sense, but moving from LiMux to Windows 8/8.1? Come on, get real. @JorgeA Technically , Vista users have NO relevance whatsoever, they are by default categorized as "meaningless" , they can be - exceptionally - allowed to be part of "the club" on an individual basis, as an example MagicAndre1981 : has been awarded a special membership card, we may see if you are eligible for a similar token of appreciation.... jaclaz

Besides the fact that it is unrelated to the OP question/issue , that applies to a .WIM image and not to a "running" system. Good. jaclaz

No. You need to define "people" before (and different kinds of people). 1. People on the job *need* (not really *want*) to WORK with the PC. They want to have it WORKing and doing whatever the PC is supposed to do EXACTLY as it did it yesterday and the day before yesterday, they *need* to be able to use flawlessly the same programs/apps they have been using for years without issues and they would like to have - as an option - better applications, but ONLY without them attempting to change their established workflow and/or causing issues. Saving a few minutes a day because the OS or hardware is a tadbit faster would be a plus, but as long as it works they are fine with current speed. For them the PC (and programs in it) are just a tool, something they use to get the work done. 2. People on a few "technology oriented" jobs *need* more functionalities, more power, more speed (and quite frankly do not care much about the looks of the stupid thingy, as long as it crunches numbers - or whatever - effectively). 3. People on a few "graphically oriented" jobs - whatever they *need*, they ALREADY found it in Macs and ALREADY use them. 4. People that are mobile consumers want fun, some more fun, and even more fun, besides some news, and they already found what they want in a iPhone, an iPad or an Android smartphone/tablet[1]. What ALL these kinds of people have in common is what they DO NOT want, i.e. they DO NOT WANT: crashesBSOD'shaving their work or entertainment tool become unbootable or "bricked"lose their work for a strange quirk of the OS or because a stupid update messed with itPeople that traditionally used MS products belong almost invariably to kind #1, and they are in larger numbers than you might expect (right now, roughly, 51.22%+24,82%= 76,04% of desktop and laptop users): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems the number of people in #2 and #3 are numerically irrelevant, whilst the vast majority of kind #4 (and that come in big numbers) were the only ones that might appreciate the new MS OS, but it failed, and failed big. The "continuous update" model may be good for this latter kind of people, and for them only. jaclaz OT but not much, a friend bought a smallish, but not "tiny", 9" no-name tablet, Android based, for something like 70 € + another 20 € for a micro SD card. After a bit of fiddling with it to install to it Whatsapp, which somehow it is not supposed to be installed on a tablet, and configuring it a but, I have to say it is not too shabby (to browse the internet, chat with whatsapp, get some lolcats, make a few selfies, these kinds of things).

Also (using another approach, useful if you install from a PE with WINNT32.EXE, but also "nlite compatible"): http://reboot.pro/topic/18119-integratedrv/ About installing the SATA AHCI drivers on a "running XP" (booted in IDE compatibility mode) see: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444-how-to-install-windows-from-usb-winsetupfromusb-with-gui/page-24#entry884409 http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?444831-HOWTO-enable-AHCI-mode-after-installing-Windows jaclaz

Obviously I beg to differ. The best one ever was, is and will remain "You only live twice", with "Goldfinger" right following it, and "From Russia with love" in a good third place. And now for no apparent reason jaclaz

Well, if you use "ISO" date format it might be easier. Something *like* this: @ECHO OFFSETLOCAL ENABLEEXTENSIONSFOR /F "tokens=1,2,3,* delims=/ " %%A IN ('DIR /tc /OD C:\batches\') DO (IF %%B leq 12 IF %%C%%B%%A lss 20110322 ECHO %%A/%%B/%%C %%D)In the above I am using my local settings, where dates are "dd/mm/yyyy" you will need to change order of variables and/or separators to suit your local settings. jaclaz

Well, if this is going to be a "preventive bug fixing thread" where mentalists foresee the bugs that will be in the tool when it will be released and suggest in advance to nuhi what he should change to fix them before they happen it will become much more fun, but I doubt that I might be of much support, I am still having a lot of troubles with my crystall ball being out of tune and as anyone knows I really suck at tarots and I-ching . On the other hand if - without having any idea of what nuhi has included in his tool - the thread is going to be a feature suggestion one, there is the risk that it might become counter productive, offering to nuhi good excuses to delay the release because he likes a suggested feature that he didn't thought about earlier and he absolutely wants to include it in the release . My idea is to just keep everyone entertained with this thread (using some smoke and mirrors when needed) so that the wait will seem shorter, while allowing nuhi to work to the last details. And now, hard-hardlinking and installing Windows 7 on FAT32 : http://reboot.pro/topic/19643-winsxs-hardlinked-files/ jaclaz
