  1. Given the traditional reliability of pre-release builds and of Windows Updates, combining the two seems like an interesting shortcut to get faster, simpler BSOD's . You may want to notice however that they talk of a "single click" and NOT of a "single tap". jaclaz
  2. There is something not clear (to me at least) in your report. Usually (but you need to confirm this on the specific notebook) there are three (primary) partitions: 1) a (small, ususally 100 or 200 Mb) partition that conatians the BOOTMGR and the \boot\BCD <- this is normally not mounted and has thus NO drive letter assigned in Explorer 2) a (large) partition that contains the actual OS, that is mounted automatically and gets drive letter C:\ normally in Explorer 3) a (medum sized, possibly 10 Gb or so) that contains the "recovery" files <- this is normally not mounted and has thus NO drive letter assigned in Explorer Now was the hard disk repartitioned? (adding partitions?) I mean, when in your reported step #2 you apply the image to drive C:, the step #5 seems a logical impossibility as there is not anymore on C: the "my friend's "clean" windows installation" as it would have been overwritten by the contents of the applied image. It is also not clear in step #5 how exactly you "switched" from "nothing happened" to "Booted again into my friend's "clean" windows installation." jaclaz
  3. Which is very good. Though of course you added it later, editing your post that did not contain it originally. Never flamed anyone AFAICR (apart maybe a few people that actually deserved it), and what I post, nonsense as it might be, tends to be "specific" (as opposed to "generic"). Naah , if you are interested in them, I am pretty sure you can find them alright. jaclaz
  4. No, the Blue Ribbon campaign for freedom of skin is a generic form of (peaceful) protest, adopted (and adoptable) by anyone anywhere. As an example, though originated on reboot.pro, the campaign was ported to MSFN when this skin became (for a short time) the only one available : http://reboot.pro/topic/12381-problems-with-the-site/?p=108066 Actually more, you forgot making some philosophy and discuss ad infinitum about the gender of angels., something that you seem very apt to. A thread can also be hijacked, which is what you are trying to do here. Why don't you start your own new thread and ask there the questions you have about Acronis products that are completely unrelated to the present topic? This topic is: "Migrating Windows 7 or 8 Install from BIOS machine to Native Boot VHD" jaclaz
  5. Hmmm. JFYI: http://www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=9693/postdays=0/postorder=asc/start=21/ @NoelC NIce . jaclaz
  6. No, but I am pretty sure I am allowed to use it, as I run this side business (just so you know to whom you will have to pay 20 bucks if you attempt the same) What remains doubtful is if you are fully compliant with the Acronym Police : http://www.acronympolice.org/ I suspect that you often use ATM, DVD and NIC improperly.... jaclaz
  7. Well, no. As long as we do it for the fun of it, nit-picking is fine. Just as an example that bulb (besides being "rectangular") has not a "thread" and you cannot screw it anywhere. As said, the picture is very nice, but as often happens some people won't appreciate the intent of the artist to transcend the banality of technical details in order to provide an image of refreshing intensity. Ceci n'est pas une lampe! http://www.artnet.fr/artistes/horacio-sosa-cordero/ceci-nest-pas-une-pipe-ceci-nest-pas-une-lampe-9opHdlkhDbD6xPGbpBWHGw2 jaclaz
  8. So that would have been a "Case 1", pretty much normal. jaclaz
  9. I don' t know. I mean, somewhere someone must stop seeing implications everywhere. It is a nice picture. <- last character is a full stop or "period". It is however representing a "brightness and third dimension challenged" bulb (an example how sometimes politically correctness is even worse than speaking frankly ), but all in all it would be a nice paper holder , and traditionally round, heated paper holders were not very practical. jaclaz
  10. Sure, how do you think they could otherwise ever have thought of making Microsoft Bob? Still the difference was that it was an alternative shell (i.e. not like removing the Windows 3.x or 8x/NT interface altogether and forcing Bob on all users): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob jaclaz
  11. Though in "improved security" one needs to read "declared theoretically improved security not really-really confirmed by any real world data". JFYI: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/page-208#entry1070010 and: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163539-are-ms-updates-for-xp-really-necessary/ you may want to skip to here : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/163539-are-ms-updates-for-xp-really-necessary/?p=1047286 jaclaz
  12. I mean that the IDE drivers would be normally "available", while the SATA ones for the "new" hardware may not (as said I haven't checked the specific hardware used by koganstyle), so at first boot the "generalized" image would not boot (because there are no suitable SATA drivers available in it) whilst when booted in IDE emulation the "generic" drivers are "normally" installed, as if it was a "first boot". The difference between Case 2 and Case 3 is thin, in Case2 what (sometimes) allows the loading of the IDE drivers is (possibly) a sort of "fallback", in Case 3 the image has not a "set" driver for mass storage and it just attempts to load the right one in the mini setup phase (or *whatever*) when booting. jaclaz
  13. No, that is actually the Asylum. I reside outside of it. And my gate to it is closed as there is no way (anymore) to have some meaningful exchange of ideas (apart the strictly technical field) with a number of residents. About site being for sale (or not) and/or increases or decreases of traffic (or Alexa ranking for that matters) those are essentially Nuno's business. Instead of all this (senseless) suppositions, have you actually tried registering there? No less than three new members registered today, so I believe that there are not any issue of any kind with it. jaclaz
  14. Ah well, if you say so . I see exactly (respectively) $29.95 and $27.95 reasons to stay clear of them, but it was nice of you to promote some Commercial software and doing so in such a direct way. jaclaz
  15. It is interesting to learn how "98" is an odd number, and that as well "XP" is not only a number, but an odd one . I believe that in the case of Wndows 98 also "Second Edition" is considered an odd number. And of course I have rarely seen a such vast "common base", entirely unlike "new", as between Windows 95 and Windows 98 and between Windows 2000 and Windows XP. BUT, you may be interested in the moves of the short-sighted bishop and of the limping knight : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/page-11#entry996327 jaclaz
  16. No offence intended of course, but by "professional graphics" I was talking of people that make a living ONLY through the use of Photoshop (or similar programs), it is not - I believe - anything connected with "more powerful systems" - it is more like a forma mentis, the people I met in the field are (or believe being) artists, and somehow they believe that an artist needs to also have an esthetically appealing tool (which is the Mac), they consider the sheer idea of opening a command prompt something that may ruin forever their artistic sensibility. The good thing about them is that unlike most other Mac users they don't brag at all about the Mac being better, they consider it a good, nice looking tool that works. Still in my experience, "common" Mac users tend instead, cannot say if because they are a minority, to endlessly try to explain me why the Mac is so much better, I remember a friend nailing me for more than one hour about how clever is the magnetic mechanism of some portable Macs battery charger.... . But happy to know that the good Adobe guys manage to sell Photoshop to a large number of PC users. jaclaz
  17. No, but you may want to start taking them . (since from what you described, you did something crazy but you were lucky and it worked . Basically a SATA controller has TWO "ID's", the first one is compatible with a "Standard IDE controller" and the second is "specific" to the controller (and need "specific" drivers), which one of the two is "exposed" to the OS depends on the BIOS settings. Case 1: Your "old" machine had it's BIOS set to IDE and thus the controller "exposed" a "generic" ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the "generic" IDE drivers. Your "new" machine had it's BIOS set to SATA and thus the controller "exposed" it's own specific ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the corespondent SATA drivers (different from the first and IF they were available) and failed to boot. As soon as you set the BIOS on the new machine in a way that it exposed the "generic" ID everything started working. Case 2: Your "old" machine had it's BIOS set to SATA and thus the controller "exposed" it's own specific ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the corespondent SATA drivers. Your "new" machine had it's BIOS set to SATA and thus the controller "exposed" it's own specific ID to the OS which consequently loaded and installed the correspondent SATA drivers (different from the first and IF they were available) and failed to boot. Normally an "old" install using SATA drivers would not AFAIK/AFAICR have "ready" the IDE drivers and "revert" to them if you change the BIOS to "IDE emulation mode" or the like, but it is entirely possible that during the lifetime of the "old" install it had used the "IDE" drivers and that they "remained" in the Registry <- just a possible explanation Case 3: If you "generalized" the .wim, it is possible that the "IDE" driver were available while the specific SATA ones for the new machine were not, haven't checked the hardware specs of the two machines, but if the "new" one is really "new" it is possible that Windows 7 has not the appropriate drivers "built-in" <- another possible explanation jaclaz
  18. Cannot say if it can be of any help with your issue, but it is possible that "between the lines" of this thread: http://reboot.pro/topic/19516-hack-bootmgr-to-boot-windows-in-bios-to-gpt/ it can be found something of use. jaclaz
  19. Ask (nicely) whomever allows people to have admin access on that computer to promote your account to Admin level . Bribe someone knowing the Admin account password, give him/her some money and get the password Recover the Admin account password .Please consider how #2 and #3 may constitute (depending on the specifics of the case and/or your country's laws) a criminal offence and/or a serious misbehaviour on workplace. jaclaz
  20. http://reboot.pro/topic/19990-migrate-win-7-or-8-install-from-bios-machine-to-native-boot-vhd-on-uefi-machine/?p=186566 jaclaz
  21. Well, assoc.exe and ftype.exe are as old as NT 4.00, possibly even earlier. jaclaz
  22. Sure . As an example last 1:30 or so of Casino Royale (with Daniel Craig ) is IMHO worth the whole movie, "The Name's Bond. James Bond." jaclaz
  23. In other words, you come here asking for trifling things, questions that would otherwise bug your "gold" partners. Good to know you consider us buggable. jaclaz
  24. No, electronic download is not available at the moment. We only send DVD's containing non redistributable files to member's home address for free , you will have to contact directly a moderator via PM to provide your address and the data for billing you the (nominal) handling & shipping costs. If you are in a hurry, with a surcharge, the disc(s) can be sent to you via FedEx or UPS. jaclaz
  25. Right questions , wrong place. The tool (and support for it ) may be found here: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/157-install-windows-from-usb/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444-how-to-install-windows-from-usb-winsetupfromusb-with-gui/ The 0.2.2 version you are using is a (very old) "previous" version of the tool, it might be better/easier, instead of attempting to "repair" that USB stick, to re-create a new one with latest version of the WinsetupFromUSB tool. jaclaz
