I'm glad its in development because Im sure I will use it one day but for now, Vista looks OK in most places. i wish it was better about display large desktop icons (instead of displaying the small version in frame) but really the truth of it is im not familiar enough with Vista to want to start chopping it up yet. but if you wanted to make the login screen artwork look a bit more serious, I'd be tempted. even after changing the background, the user frame and shiny arrow button seem too Fisher Price OS to me (and the arrows on the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen) I'll install it on my laptop and play with it again but last time I had it installed, I wasnt familiar enough with vista to know what it changed and what was that way out of box.

A word of warning if you are using a patched UXTHEME.DLL you should roll back to the unpatched verions prior to installing SP1 (else themes service and other stuff will crash on boot) Vistaglazz does not work with SP1 but you can patch manually using the files at http://anti-tgtsoft.com/repository/

Not sure about why nlite wouldnt be making the CD bootable but you can try makeing it bootable 'the oldfashioned way' http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/8/ also, im unfamiliar with the EEEpc (even though i want one) but are you sure its set properly to boot off a cd? also if your running short on CDs, you might wanna install VMware or virtualbox on another PC for testing the iso without burning it.

Problems installing XP MCE 2005
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Tripredacus's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
consider me vote #2 for a full reinstall. id advise to skip the CD3 install though and go straight to MS Update for your patches. -
One of my student worker came in last week and asked me if i'd heard about the 'outbreak' at the vo-tech he goes to. (I dunno how i would have but i was nice and just said no) he goes on to tell me that the vo-tech has a lot of computers that cant get on the net because of some bloodhound virus and their admin has turned off the 'net to the rest until he can figure it out. as it turns out they are using norton and some software called cybersitter and well ill let the guy shouting about fire and brimstone in the yahoo article explain it to you: http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20071206/tc_zd/...IH4xoZL18wjtBAF Ok its not really that bad but they do drama it up a bit even if they have a valid point.

my opinion is its easier to start with an OS and take out what you don't like (Nlite, Disable SVCS, ETC) than it is to try to take an OS you do like and patch and hack it to work on next gen hardware. Trying to cut Vista down to a win2k hardware footprint might be a little optimistic, but you can easily knock XP down a few notches on bloat scale and get a pretty smooth OS to boot. (ok seriously the OS/boot pun was unintentional but im leaving it in) AFAIK, Microsoft still accepts manufacturers looking for hardware certification (WHQL) for windows 2000 but in this case, Intel may have decided not to test/certify the board for 2k. You can try to use the XP drivers on the 2K system and they might work. Intel may have left the info in the INFs if the drivers were built for 2k but just taken them off the support list but I think youd be better off trimming XP down to look and act like 2k (not that you should need to -any CPu that'll install on the 945 chipset should handle XP in all its bloated glory just fine)

A few stupid things about vista and how I get around them
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to PC_LOAD_LETTER's topic in Windows Vista
#1 yeah the 'classic' version is a little too classic for me if you know what i mean and the new start menu was obviously not designed for a user running at a high resolution with a lot of programs -the fix i discovered is the best of both worlds #2 both shades of blue are horrible IMO. how hard would it have been to make the Aero basic skins change color with with the Aero glass theme -not very hard #3 i prefer it that way too -its just that I missed the memo about hitting alt to make it visible and figured I'd share -
[Project] Self infecting secondary PC
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Tarun's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
i did this to an old machine the lazy mans way by restoring a few hundred hijackthis backups from the backup folder on my pen drive (around 50Mb of crap malware DLLs and toolbars) some restore correctly, others didnt (because some where wiped using RKU/antivirus prior to Hijackthis touching them) it was so much fun i didnt delete the /backups folder afterwards (its up to 75.1MB and 3485 items currently) one day a old XP machine will try my patience and i shall punish it for its insolence! BWAHAHAHA! P.S. MSFN needs a devil smiley -
I think you are looking for something like the Vista Transformation pack or Panarchy's guide to make your XP look like vista Also a bit of an FYI, topics with generic titles are a bit of a pet peeve of ours around here

You can use WSname.exe to rename the machine but it will require a reboot. If you network will function with NETBIOS over TCP you can turn it off which would kill Windows ability to check for a dupe name but im not sure what side effects that type of setup would have To try it: Network Connections->Ethernet Adapter Properties->TCP/IP Properties->Advaned->WINS tab->Set NETBIOS over TCP/IP to Disabled I have no idea what the side effects of such a setup would be but i do believe it should prevent windows ability to sense the other same named machines on the network.

dude, you know this topic is over 6 years old right? i think hes prolly figured it out by now.

so u mean i can use any vista dvd and use my genuine serial number and my OS will be Legal? re-read neo's post. If you just reinstall your gonna have activation troubles.

1. http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/19/ WINNT.SIF [Data] AutomaticUpdates=no 2. Integrate XP SP2 and it comes with DX9. You can also use driverpacks from http://driverpacks.net to simplify things (I highly recommend their Mass Storage text mode drivers -they'll save you tons of time)

I figured since there is so much griping about Vista, I figured I'd get it on it too but i decided to do it a little more constructively than usual #1 the new start menu in a tiny box in the corner of my screen Ok I Agree, Next, Next, Finish, Start, All Programs, Squint, Sit up in chair, Hunch over monitor, Still looking, Scroll, Still looking, wait what the hell was I looking for again? The problem I'm referring to is the absurd idea that every program I will ever need on my Vista system will fit in a 20 item list tucked way in the corner on my screen. I have an awesome 24" LCD monitor and here I am struggling to find a program in a list because Ive been restricted to a tiny frame inside my start menu. There should be an option to allow the Start menu to 'pop out' like it did in XP. but as far as i know, there isn't one so I found a bit of a workaround: which makes the start menu look like this: Its not perfect but it'll get me by until someone figures out a way to make the All Programs menu pop out like XPs #2 Microsofts obsession with the color blue Ok I've installed Vista and Ive just activated Aero by installing my graphics drivers so I can now change my glass color so i never again have to see that stupid shade of blue MS decided on for Vista Aero (except at MSFN ) WRONG! Applications that have windows in windows still use the Aero Basic theme (including Microsofts MMC app) My solution: Vistaglazz (for patching UXtheme) and Vista Black for Vista Basic by fellow MSFN user Vishal-Gupta I know Vishal-Gupta didn't intend for this them to be used with Aero, but I'm happy to report it goes quite well with it (black matches whatever color glass I decide to use on a given day) As an added bonus, the shellstyle included with this theme is black so it looks less out of place in explorer. #3 Stupid hidden File menu No pics for this one since they aren't needed but as you may have noticed, the File-Edit-View-Tools-Help menu that is the most recognizable and oldest part of explorer is now turned off in Vista but can be re-enabled in Folder Options but youd have to go to the control panel to do that right? Nope. Just hit the alt key with explorer open and it'll display the menu so you can go to Tool->Options and turn it back on if you like. Personally i leave it off as its rarely used anymore but its nice to know how to access it in case you need to.

ok this has been discussed at least once in the 2 years that this topic layed dormant but but just to summarize, Deepfreeze IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN AN ANTIVIRUS REPLACEMENT. as for infecting a frozen machine, the only way for a file to stay on the machine after a reboot is for it to have a multiple drives/partitions and one or more has to be unfrozen at the time of infection. also the shared PC toolkit is now know as windows SteadyState and is an awesome free alternative to Deepfreeze (though they have very different feature sets)

kinda funny that the same argument could be made against windows vista

this should work based on the description you gave: [boot loader] timeout=20 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Win XP Normal" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Win XP Slave" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn This is the same but makes windows default to the slave drive (dont have to select it manually) [boot loader] timeout=20 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Win XP Normal" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Win XP Slave" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn all that said, you really should set you BIOS to boot to whichever drive you want to use. If you can boot to the drive by changing the jumper, then i would say the clone worked.

http://www.imgburn.com/ is free and works great on vista

C:\Windows\System32\WinSCard.dll is the smartcard dll from what i found. If thats what the error is saying then id say thats your problem right there.

Including Boot Camp Drivers in an unattended install.
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Terranaut's topic in nLite
the same way you include drivers for any other hardware. -
Im still waiting for XPize for Vista (not Vize) - I wanna make Vista more like XP (first thing to go would have to be the tiny programs frame that now passes for a start menu)

This may seem like a strange request but....
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to dwarfer's topic in Windows XP
