  1. i have a gateway 2485w and I love it Gateway
  2. Sniper rifle = as awesome as it ever was. Translocator = Still available in every mode except VCTF where it has been replaced by the hoverboard. i think the server browseer sucks too. they could leave that one in for the 12 people out there that like it and just add an 'advanced mode' server browser for everyone else and the bots are actually a lot smarter than 2k4 or 99 (still easy to kill but they follow orders better)
  3. Ok getting back on topic: Meet SP2, SP2point9, and SP3 All machines are 3.2 Ghz P4s (dont have any dual cores in the office ATM) with 1GB Ram with Intel onboard video the OSes were installed as follows: XP RTM installed Drivers and Office 2003 & 2007 installed Microsoft update run on the SP2 Patched Machine and the SP3 machine with all updates (including optionals) -SP2 PURE machine received MS installer 3.1, WGA, and all office updates. SP3 Machine updated to SP3 via Microsoft Update Auto Updates & Security Center services disabled (no AV installed and didnt want the nag to interfere with benchmarks) I didnt bother with 3dmark since the video card in these machines will barely even play WOW but i did run Aquamark: I was initially gonna run 3 test sets but ended up running 5 the results were as follows: (placed in code tags since i cant do tables here) SP2 PURE | SP2 Patched | SP3 v3244 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 10,011 | 10,046 | 10,021 10,041 | 10,029 | 9,996 10,026 | 10,002 | 9,919 -------------------------------------------------------------------- rebooted all machines -------------------------------------------------------------------- 10,079 | 10,031 | 10,021 10,027 | 10,005 | 10,031 averages------------------------------------------------------------ 10036.8 | 10022.6 | 9997.6 (10024.3 with below 10000 scores ommited) I rebooted all the machines between tests 3 & 4 because SP3 wasn't doing well at all after Aquamark tests, the machines were all rebooted and sit idle for 15 minutes before starting office bench First SP3s results: looks to average around 57 SP2 Patched results: averages slightly lower at around 56 SP2 PURE results did that every single time i ran it. i may rebuild this machine using SP2 slipstream install and see if officebench runs at all on SP2 PURE I may have to round up some dualcores for a test too but until then what do you guys think of these "results"?
  4. execute the setup with /admin and create a .MSP file and use the GUI to select your options then save your .MSP file in the /Updates folder (filename doesnt matter) then when you execute setup.exe it will use the setting in your specified in your .MSP file. If your using a CD to install, youll have to reburn the CD everytime you make changes/apply updates so use a pen drive or put it on a network share.
  5. yeah i went overboard on the ram but i figure if im gonna buy 4GB, might as well do it right
  6. Couldn't find an in stock 8800GT so ill use a 7300LE i've had lying around until I find a shiny new 8800GT Antec Sonata III Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply ASUS P5K PREMIUM/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600 CORSAIR Dominator 4GB(4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Quad Kit Desktop Memory Model QUAD2X4096-8500C5DF ASUS Triton70 92mm Vapo Bearing CPU Cooler
  7. im prolly gonna start with the hacked set(s) of drivers next since i recall using a 80 series driver too. thanks for the input guys this problem defies logic so i just wanted to make sure someone wasnt gonna reply with "oh yeah, i get that problem all the time you have to set the key HKLM\Software\Nvidia\BSODPrefs\OnInstall=0 before installing the driver"
  8. Just use http://js-kit.com/ratings/ if that one doesnt work for you, there are others out there
  9. I can IMAGE a highend machine using PING with XP SP2, Office2k7, all updates, Flash, Acrobat, Quicktime and Real in around 7-10 minutes but that same machine would take 30+ minutes to install XP from my slipstream CD now Windows XP RTM might install in 10-15 minutes on modern hardware but then you'd spent hours updating it you might speed things up slightly by installing over a superfast network with a RIS server but not by much
  10. just make it unusable to anyone but those that know the password My UA cd renames the admin account and sets a password that only I know. if the CD falls into the wrong hands, it wont be of any use to the without an offline password cracking utility unless the reauthor the .sif file but if they know how to do that, they prolly have their own license anyways
  11. http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/51/ i think method #2 can be used on loginui.exe for a logon screen
  12. Yeah i had that happen on one of the machines I was testing vista on. Its a wonderful little security hole (see if when you run something if it shows up as being run by SYSTEM in the task manager) I had to just create a new admin (which was interesting since i was logged on as power user since my admin account wasnt even loading), log on as him, delete all accounts and recreate them Kepp in mind that I had no data on the system so no data was lost. You may want to make a backup of your C:\Users\ folder before removing the users
  13. you can remove the bar with the following registry settings Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Comdlg32] "NoPlacesBar"=dword:00000001 BTW, you can also add/remove items on that bar just search Google for "Customize Places Bar"
  14. They have not included enough data about the tests to be making these kinds of claims. is the SP2 machine running SP2 and no other patches (SP2 PURE) or is it running SP2 + all publicly available updates? If its SP2 pure then I would expect these type of results seeing as SP2 is over 3 years old and none of that hardware is. If its SP2 and all available updates then you may consider me impressed. Don't get me wrong, I've been fighting the urge to install SP3 beta on every machine Ive built this month just to avoid the Microsoft Update Download-O-rama I have to do even with my Slipstreamed SP2+ CD. I can hardly wait for SP3 to go public
  15. http://potw.news.yahoo.com/ 40,000+ a year? im in the wrong business Found via FARK
  16. Sorry. Im just bored. somebody post something! http://www.addletters.com/!!
  17. my first thought would be to see if there is a newer firmware for you router http://support.dlink.com/downloads/# my second thought would be to replace it with one of these with HyperWRT on it (ok that was my first thought but thats just cause i love my WRT)
  18. http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/ its free and faster than safe mode
  19. do me a favor an download http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/download.php (direct link http://ipscan.sourceforge.net/ipscan.exe ) and scan it an tell me if norton still hasnt gotten the message that angry IP is not an unwanted program. Seriously, I would appreciate it if you would test that out for me because im curious but not curious enough to pay symantec to find out
  20. youll need http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ to get to the actual graphic the graphic is in explorer.exe as bitmap #167 (166 for home edition)
  21. i have several machines all with the same problem i am at my wits end with these things. Several different intel chipset machines machines with XP SP2 have this problem if i remove the nvidia card and replace it with an ATI or use the onboard intel (where available) I do not have this issue the card in question are Nvidia Geforce 2 MX/MX 400 and/or Geforce4 MX 440with AGP 8x Ive attached 2 minidump files but when i dumpchk ed them, i couldnt get anything useful out of them BSOD always occurs at nv4_min.sys or nv4_disp.sys and i dont have the address at the moment heres what i have tried: Different Systems of the same type (Gateway E3600 and Dell GX260/GX270) -but same issue occurs on a generic AMD 700Mhz machine too Different video cards (same models as those listed above) Drivercleaner (cabs cleaned too) and reinstall of nvidia 93.71 and 66.?? driver Fresh install of XP SP2 + Nvidia driver 93.71 Rythmic chanting of "The way its meant to be played" and "Where do you want to go today?" during driver install prolly some other stuff i cant remember trying this is one of those cases of is should just work but it isn't. the machines are clean 100% up to date legit XP with only office 2007 installed Mini112607_19.zip
  22. ok first off, is the computer slow but stable or slow and unstable? by stable i mean: If you attempt to launch a program, the PC eventually does it (even if it doesn't perform well once launched) The system does NOT lock up (will freeze at times but always seems to catch up eventually) No BSODs/Unannounced reboots If that is the case, then the problem may not be hardware related but something on the system is bogging it down open task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) Click the processes tab Check Show processes from all users at the bottom You should see 4 different users listed, NETWORK SERVICE, SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, and your username Sort the columns by CPU and look to see what is highest on the list. If all is well, then the 'System Idle process' should be the highest, if not, then if the process that is higher than System Idle is running as your username, you should try ending process on it and see what happens Sort the columns by Mem usage and look to see what is highest on the list. If anything is using WAAAY more memory than anything else and is running as your username, you should try ending process on it and see what happens If nothing there looks out of place, post a log from HiJackThis! and well look it over to see it you have any unwanted programs on the system. If the system is NOT stable then i would run http://www.memtest86.com/ youll have to download the ISO and burn it to cd (prolly on another PC) that will test your RAM to see if it is the problem
  23. has anyone had any experience with http://www.gamefly.com/ its supposed to be like netflix but for games There are so many games i wanna try for the Wii out right now but i cant justify dropping 200$ on games (well i can but i don't wanna drop 200$ and still be bored)
  24. Imagine this scenario. You've just received the latest Hollywood blockbuster in the mail from the DVD rental service of your choice. You've popped the popcorn, poured a tall glass of your favorite beverage, and settled back to watch the film on your flatscreen TV. 15 minutes or so into the movie—right as the action is building to a crescendo—the movie fades to a commercial. For the next minute, you're forced to watch the commercial as the fast-forward button has suddenly stopped working. The unhappy experience is repeated two or three more times before the movie ends. The only way to avoid the interruption is to pay another buck or two to the company you rented from. Ripped straight from Ars Technica I can see hollywood jumping all over this (especially for their TV on DVD stuff) and it makes me sad
