  1. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=109218 I know that article says it applies to vista but server 2008 is essentially Windows Vista "Server Edition"TM Im not sure if it even has UAC but if it does and youve disabled it, then it couldnt hurt to try that tweak.
  2. if you cant replace the power supply you can add another one http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...p?EdpNo=2478152 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/se...p?EdpNo=2700091 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817101025 ive never seen one in use before but you gotta admit, its a nice idea if the case wont llow you to replace it
  3. well if the drive is capable of reading dvds but it cannot read that particular dvd, i would look for firmware update on the drive before I called it dead you can search for a update here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces= If you install imgburn (its free) you can goto tools->drives->check for firmware update and it'll tell you what you current firmware is and then send you to that site -its pretty cool
  4. Nothing groundbreaking or anything usually its just little stuff like the font face/size/style changing when you hover it in the list, the little formatting 'swatches' things, I have several departments using Groove (which is actually a decent app) point was that people in my enviroment are adapting well to 2007 I like the fact that outlook is set to authenticating outgoing email servers by default (its about time) I do not like the lack of slipstreaming updates (though the Updates folder is an awesome idea -i love the /admin switch)
  5. configed via registry? not that im aware of. but you can configure TCP/IP settings from the Command Prompt
  6. OK first off, I'm not falling for your 'Apple is the better cuz tehy has teh big iconz 1st LOL' flamebait tactics (I know thats not what you typed but thats the way I read it) -dammit! fell for it again! Secondly I have a couple hundred people i've deployed office 2007 to and while some are more vocal than others, I can tell you that almost everyone hates it for around a month then after working a bit with it i hear things like 'I was doing X in (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) the other day and it did the coolest thing! Did it have that feature in 2003?" to which I get reply "no it didn't" they there is much rejoicing and they all thank me for the time I took Update and deploy Office 2007 to all of them (ok that last part is made up but you get the point) Short Version: 90% of the people i have upgraded hated it for the first month. After that they had adjusted to it and adapted. I've even told them we were maintaining a 2003 license for at least a year and offered anyone that wanted to the option to go back for year and so far I've only had 1 taker (who will likely retire before that time)
  7. Ok its official. That benchmark is total BS. If a ATi 850 on a 3200+ can score the same as my OC'd 8800GT on a friggin Quad core system then then any number it spits out its BS to me I have the AMD 64 3200+ -the first 64 version (double the L1 and 2ghz clock) in my old system and it wasnt to hot either
  8. Burn Memtest to an ISO/Usb/Floppy, boot to it and let it run a few passes with all your ram in and see if any of it is actually bad. Other than that, im at a loss to explain it since i have zero experience with Vista x64
  9. Yeah i forgot about the OOBE test. thatd be kind of a pain. i woulda prolly just swapped to an ancient vid card, let it test then fix the problem once i was in windows. no idea why things worked differently this time though.
  10. I have attached the textmode drivers for you motherboards SATA controller. you have 2 options: extract the files to a floppy and hit f6 after booting off the XP cd when prompted or integrate them into a new cd using this method Personally, i dont care for either method. the easiest way is: Copy the contents of your XP CD cd to your hard drive Download Driverpacks Base and Driverpack Mass Storage from http://driverpacks.net/ run DP_Base.exe (part of driverpacks base) Point it at folder you extracted XP CD to Add the Mass Storage driverpack (be sure to check the checkbox for textmode install) make it into an ISO and burn it using this method boot from that CD and XP will find your drive 82801.zip
  11. Ive never had any issues with vista performance thingie. but its not a very accurate benchmark but its never locked up on me. prolly a driver issue of some kind. try some different driver versions if you really wanna get it working but if it works fine in games who cares what the windows score is.
  12. this is the one im using right now for utorrent (still using the default filetype)utorrent.ico
  13. I think he means the icons inside the program (which look fine IMO)
  14. you people?! YOU PEOPLE?! whats that supposed to mean? nah j/k B) I highly recommend installing driverpacks.net core, MS, CPU, Chipset, and LAN packs because they take very little space and you can boot a machine into XP without a floppy, have LAn connectivity and have USB 2.0 speeds from your pen drive to finish building the system.
  15. it would appear that file uploading is not possible at this time rapidshare will just have to do for now. BTW, i looked at the files quickly and didnt see a problem that stuck out
  16. for the people (like me) that had to look this up to find out what the heck a BBU was and why id need a program to change it if i wanted to: Its for changing XP's New Style Setup Billboards Colors
  17. article explaining the problem: http://chris123nt.com/2007/11/27/vistas-ua...ing-once-again/ actual fix: http://www.bluescreenofdeath.org/ forum thread about it: http://www.hdrive.ca/forums/index.php?showtopic=139 article at neowin where i saw it first: http://neowin.net/news/main/07/12/15/disab...tas-bootup-time there now no one can say i didnt cite where i saw it and everything in between the key is actually called Start -not Startup but other than that, it appears to do exactly what it advertises. anyone else aware of any possible side effects that might expliain MS leaving it enabled?
  18. OK first ill state what should be obvious IMO but Im beginning to think I'm just weird cause very few people seem to agree. PC Gaming != Console Gaming* this is often confused with PC Gaming > Console Gaming or PC Gaming < Console Gaming The truth of the matter is its is almost impossible to create the same game these days for more than 1 platform and have them come out identical and in the rare case that they do, some people will prefer the console controls and others will prefer the ol' keyboard + mouse Personally I use the PC for FPS, RTS and MMOs Unreal 3, Gears of War, Blacksite, Simcity type(including spore), Warcraft1-3, Hellgate, WoW the only 'current gen' console I own is the Wii but I have played games on both the 360 and PS3 Zelda:TP, Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports/Play I have at least 20 racing games for the original XBOX(GTA Series not included) but my favorites by far are the Burnout Series (BO:Paradise might get me to buy a 360) OK, I kinda got lost there but my point is some genres are more fun on one platform than they are on another Examples: Halo is a FPS for consoles and I loath the mere mention of the game because I found the controls impossible and the gameplay bland when compared with almost any PC FPS yet every 13 year old with a Xbox live account thinks Bungie invented the FPS. Other side of the coin -imagine Zelda for the PC(yes i know there was one but im trying to forget it) the gameplay and controls just wouldnt work. Same with Mario, Sonic, ETC. You just have to look at what games are out or will be coming out for the expected life of your PC/Console and evaluate where you wanna put your money at. as for the game makers moving away from PCs, yes there are some that are switching platforms but for the most part, I agree with their decision to move because if it makes a better game on a console in the end then Ill just have to deal with the hundreds of games put out a year for the PC. as for the Wii, as i said its not really nex gen so I can't really lump it into a nextgen buying decision type thread but IMO, it is the poster child for what console gaming is about. * != means does not equal
  19. you can patch UXtheme without the need for aPE enviroment or safe mode (hell if you try hard enough i think you can do it without rebooting) easy way is to use a patcher like this one: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=140707 (i think its the same thing leadboots linked) XPize can do it for you too You can also download the dll and swap it manually (there is a trick to it)
  20. vista supports resizing partitions natively so 45Gb should be adequate and if its not, just resize it. but to answer you question, this is my work machine and I'm using 52Gb of a 232Gb partition on my C: but thats just because of the other 3 drives in there i store all my files on. only the OS and apps and their files go on C:
  21. just set the read only flag on the doc on the file itself @echo off Attrib +R "document Name.doc" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\winword.exe" "document Name.doc" or just set the permissions for the file to deny your user write access to that file doesnt stop them from using file=save as though
  22. SpiderVista, SpiderVista, does whatever a SpiderVista does. Can he swing from a web? No he can't hes Vista. sorry couldnt help myself.
  23. just get Icesword and look in the process list for items in RED. those are items that are not visible to the OS directly(aka rootkits). there are other ways to fond 'em but IceSword has never let me down
  24. Im running Hellgate, UT3, QuakeWars, NFS Prostreet, and Blacksite just fine on Vista Business. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...ons/choose.mspx Business vs Ultimate: Media Center(only real useful if you have a tv tuner card) DVD burning(and playback without installing WinDVD/PowerDVD etc) Hard Drive encrpytion(which i wouldnt use on a gaming system) a few cheap windows games and if you want to go 40$ cheaper and can do without remote desktop connection, get home premium everything from Home Basic to Ultimate should have identical performance with DirectX9/10
