  1. Not really. its kind of both. the HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT branch applies to all NEW users but will not affect existing ones if you know so much about the registry why didn't you find it? it only took about 10 seconds searching the HKLM branch once i got to a machine running IE7 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PhishingFilter Enabled=2 Enabled=1 for on without auto checking
  2. oh well then i swung and missed. I have to get some sleep. maybe someone else has some ideas?
  3. unless im missing something, that logo looks clean. However your punkbuster might be the culprit O23 - Service: PnkBstrA - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\PnkBstrA.exe O23 - Service: PnkBstrB - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\PnkBstrB.exe I realized what that software is but according to what i found, those service are new to a recent version and vista kinda changes a few rules related to services with its implementation of Interactive Services Dialog Detection my guess is its just a conflict between punkpuster and vistas ISDD id try shutting down those 2 punkbuster services and see if it resolves your problem
  4. It works fine on Vista and has update lists for Vista 32 & 64.
  5. download http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php#hijackthis and post a log file and well take a look at it
  6. Thats the way Microsoft does things. they will release it when they feel like it but it will be released eventually. If they announced when it was coming out, some people would stop updating until it did. (which is only one of the hundreds of reasons why they dont give dates on service packs until right before they drop)
  7. Nah compile a full Gentoo install from a stage 1 tarball THEN install Ubuntu. Then there will be no complaints about installing Ubuntu
  8. http://www.vernalex.com/guides/sysprep/index.shtml as for applications 'required' by drivers unless you use special hardware, these types of applications are rarely needed. usually the hardware will work but will loose some features: a 5.1 sound card might default to 2 channel audio a mouse with more that 2 buttons wont be able to remap buttons 3,4,5,etc a keyboard with media keys/volume control will have its extra buttons disabled printers will usually be able to print but checking things like ink/toner level will not show up monitors may loose their ability to rotate 90/180 degrees (like on a tablet PC) dual head video cards will default to single monitor mode and clone/dual mode will not be available all of which can be resolved by installing the drivers for that device manually I would setup your themes, apps, etc on a fresh built machine create a universal image using the guide above (the video is very informative) put your AV softwares install files as well as any other software that cannot be duplicated after install on the desktop so it can be easily installed after first boot then create what I call an 'Ark' (a lab with 1-2 of every PC you can get) and image them all with your sysprepped universal image
  9. If you read the description on that policy it sound like it turns it on -wny else would you have to choose an option. GPs are like sometimes that you have to enable the disabled policy to enabled what you want to disable.
  10. seriously fraps and then encoding is your best option. the only other way is to configure a tv out/second head (if your vid card has one) to output to another PC to do the recording/encoding/uploading i had a guildmate that would record his vids that way -but that was just so he wouldnt have to quit out of wow to encode/upload the vids to the guild site.
  11. We have a lot of the Gateway all in ones but i think the oldest we have is the Profile 4 and its sticker says 2000/XP I believe Profile 4 Profile 3 Profile 2 Profile 1.x If you decide to replace the power supply on it let me know which one you have and ill see if i can get a replacement part #
  12. i dunno about command line but it can be done with a group policy GPEDIT.MSC Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Internet Explorer->Turn off Managing Phishing Filter->Enabled->Set Mode to Automatic
  13. i didnt find anything about a reg key but these 2 links both associate the problem with the licensing service not running Solutions 2, 3, and 4 seem like a safe bet (solution 1 is tech support 101) http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewConten...1&sliceId=2 i dunno if your running a version of windows that might be adding a funky character to the path, but if you are then try this http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewConten...7&sliceId=2
  14. Deep Freeze is not as secure as Faronics claims. There are "unfreeze" programs that can bypass the lockdown. Yeah your referring to http://usuarios.arnet.com.ar/fliamarconato/pages/emain.html which stopped working well over a year ago (I've used it to unfreeze some machines that were frozen prior to my employment with an unknown password) Current version of deepfreeze is 6.30.220.1871 all of our classroom PCs run through a proxy and i can see the sites the students visit and occasionally one of them will find that site and i have a little laugh about it (i could block it but its more fun to let them try and fail) I haven't verified it personally but supposedly in 6.xx if DF detects tampering of this sort the password prompt is disabled until reboot (and the tampering would be undone by said reboot) Im not saying its unhackable -just saying no one has hacked it and published results in over a year.
  15. I manage around 200 machines on deepfreeze and I can tell you its not hack proof but its as close as you're going to get. you can set the machines to auto login to a user/power user account thats locked down with GP, disable to secondary logon service (to prevent runas from being used) then set deepfrreze to 'reboot on logout' and there is NO way for a local user to access your admin account. As for users messing with files, I have personally taken a XP SP2 machine, frozen it, logged on as administrator, escalated to SYSTEM level privledges, made a quick and dirty .bat file to zap every file in the c:\windows folder, ran it, watched it run untill the PC BSODed and autorebooted and watched reboot into a fresh working version of XP with all files and settings intact. If it can live through that, i think it can take anything our students can dish out. //P.S. Mods sorry for veering off topic. if this gets too out of hand, feel free to split this off into another topic.
  16. Theres also Altiris Deployment solution which is very nice if you have the time to set it up http://www.altiris.com/Products/DeploymentSolution.aspx I remember Novells Zenworks doing imaging as well but i dont know if they still have that as a product As for PING, if you need any info on it, I can provide feedback since i use it almost every day. Heres a quick pro/con list: Free Images machines that are running DeepFreeze properly can be used to make a restoreDVD from and image No PXE drivers need to be installed -works with almost every card ive tried FAST! Transfers at the full capacity of the network card everytime (10/100/1000) i can image a machine by pxe booting, hit enter 2-3 times, select create new image, type file name, select compression, and wait. runs its own dhcp server so all you need is the PING server and the machine you are imaging Ive alway used i for windows to windows imaging but its supposed to be cross platform Very lightweight. doesn't 'install' itself to windows. To move it from 1 machine to the next, just copy the folder Cannot multicast (can send to more than 1 machine but in different streams) cannot take an image from 1 machine and directly copy it to another (has to be made into an image first) 3com 905B cards wont PXE boot (905C will though) By default, it grabs the CMOS settings and restores them to the target computer (Copies the Service Tag info from the Bios from 1 machine to the other on dells and gateways)
  17. Just one of the many ways XP is hacked together OOB http://blogs.msdn.com/ericfitz/archive/200...ure-events.aspx I know this forum is for modifying the boot screen (not mocking it) but i figured if there is an audience here for this article, the people in this forum would be it.
  18. Archive.org caught some of it http://web.archive.org/web/20070714155521r...ki.org/doku.php
  19. I just saw this on [H]ardOCP and thought some people over here might find it interesting http://dee.cz/lightsmark/ It looks pretty good (the music is a little annoying but it can be changed)
  20. I looked these boards up cause I decided my next system is gonna be a quad core but I cant buy this board.* I think i can answer your question on what if you don't want to watercool The Maximus Formula SE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131221 Non SE board -same specs not water cooling: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131227 *The board looks awesome but the name just sounds stupid -Motherboard names are supposed to be like license plate numbers. they have to meet at least 2 of these conditions: 1 to 3 letters followed by 1 to 3 numbers can be optionally suffixed with 1 modifier such as SE, LE, Deluxe, Ultra, X, XR.
  21. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314472 Says the file could be located on a floppy at A:\ but at the stage that it would be accessed, i dont think it would be possible for windows to map to a network drive. You could setup windows to install from a PXE/RIS setup and install xp over the network but that might be overkill
  22. I asked this in one of the 2007 UL threads http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...008&hl=2007 but ill post it here for all to see Is there any chance of updating WUD to extract the *.msp files from the updates after downloading? that way all you have to do is drop the *.msp files into the CD:\Updates folder after WUD downloads them and about the WGA issues -its too bad Microsoft hasnt released some sort of toolkit for developers to integrate WGA detection into their apps (so WUD could WGA check and if WGA fails restrict downloads to security updates)
  23. Windows XP SP3 is currently schedule for release the day after I get my XP SP2 unattended CD setup exactly like I want it. Windows Vista SP1 is currently scheduled for the day after I do our first major rollout of Vista
  24. yeah aplications that use windows in windows kinda interface (Paint shop pro) revert to the vista basic theme too (the light baby blue color) I found a workaround for Paint shop and i just confirmed that it has an effect on Office 2k3 apps as well Thats Frontpage 2003 (its the only thing on the machine that hasnt been updated to 2007) and it still isnt perfect but at least it ain't blue Youll need to install a 3rd party 'basic' theme (not an aero theme) here is the one i use: http://vishal-gupta.deviantart.com/art/Vis...-Basic-63288112
