  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caps_lock To my knowledge, you cant create a raid 0 with different size disk (for it to work best they have to be the same make/model)
  2. doesn't work like that. It would be awesome if it did but it doesn't. You have to switch windows back to a generic setup that will boot on multiple machunes. check out this guide. It will explain it much more clearly than i can. http://www.vernalex.com/guides/sysprep/index.shtml
  3. Yeah somebody already did that. It was called autopatcher. It was great. you could bring any copy of XP current by popping in the CD and clicking a few times. It was truely awesome. I keep using the word was because its no longer around because MS killed it because it didnt support WGA and therefore was very popular with the Non-genuine windows crowd you can take a clean install of XP, apply all the updates and then copy the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to another unpatched PC and launch Windows Update and it'll apply the updates without having to download them the closest thing to autopatcher I've seen is http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=109430 If you are setting this up in a large environment then i would look into setting up WSUS (basically windows update inside the lan)
  4. Being that the file is just word template, I believe it would be legal under the EULA to distribute it. To my knowledge the only thing not allowed to be distributed is compiled files, bitmaps and sounds.
  5. grab a set of headphones or another set of speakers and plug into the card and see if the card plays music on that if it does then your speakers could be at fault (dunno why theyd play on another system though) if the music wont play via headphones then its the card, settings in the OS or possible a bad front panel audio plug(if you have one on your case/card)
  6. that log looks clean. I would look for a copy of icesword (it can see processes/regkeys/files hidden by a rootkit that wouldnt show in hijackthis) IF you find anything use rootkitunhooker to take care of it. if its not software doing it then it could be the cpu scaling back due to a heat issue or something use hwmonitor to check temp http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php (works with most chipsets)
  7. Yeah the hardest thing to get used to when setting up an ubuntu system is when the install is done, its done -everything works. some features arent enabled because you have to add drivers but usually the system is in a workable state at the end of the install. as for your verizon issue, if it connects with regular ol' ethernet, then ubuntu should be able to pick up an IP without the software the same as windows. but if its one of those USB modems then youll either have to get divers for it or get a different modem
  8. I've ebeen playing Overlord all weekend you should be able to run it without any problem System requirements: Windows® XP/Vista Pentium® 4 2.4 GHz or Athlon 2400+ processor 512MB RAM DirectX® 9.0c GeForce FX5700 / Radeon 9500 or above graphics card DirectX compatible sound card 4.5GB hard drive space 2x DVD-ROM drive Its a console-ish (available on the 360) game but it translates very well to the PC. considering it was only 24.99 at walmart its the best deal Ive gotten on any of the games Ive purchased in the last 2 months. thats just because Ive enjoyed playing it more than the 50-60$ games i usually end of buying. they have a demo so i would recommend trying that first and if its not your thing, then you havent lost anything.
  9. Aha you disabled part of the OS to get it to run fine. nope. I didn't disable it was auto disabled for me. prolly o that people like you would try to run it on a 333mhz celeron with an ati rage card and then complain about its shotty performance. anyways, Im done here. the point of my post was not to begin an argument but to prove that the poll is biased and broken. I had no intention of fighting over whose choice of OS was better enjoy your obsolete OS on your obsolete CRT monitor. My Quadcore with with is kicking out the Cleartype quite nicely to my 24" LCD
  10. sure thing. just putting in my 2 cents. this method also works well for recovering a system that cannot start IE for whatever reason so you you can get on the web and look for help with fixing IE
  11. you can also use this path to get whatever the latest firefox is (in case you lose track) /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/win32/en-US also in case your not into Firefox either but still would like to avoid IE7: [Guide] Download Opera 9.25 in Windows Vista without Touching IE7, or Any Other Browser 1) Type cmd in the Search box under the Start menu n right click the selected result and select Run as administrator. 2) Now type following command in Command Prompt ftp ftp.opera.com You will be asked for your user name, and just type anonymous, and specify a password. Simply pressing Enter will deal with the password request, and you have logged in successfully. 3) Now, type cd /pub/opera/win/925/en/ and press Enter. 4) Then type mget Opera_9.25_Eng_Setup.exe to access Opera_9.25_Eng_Setup.exe. After the download will be completed, type "Opera_9.25_Eng_Setup.exe" with the quotes to install the open source browser. Source: Copy/Paste and a little editing
  12. http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2..._goes_to_t.html So I'm gonna go ahead and call it now. Some goober is gonna buy a machine with Vista 32 and 4GB of ram and fire up his class action lawyer because his system only uses 3.1 - 3.3GB and Microsoft 'knowingly misrepresented the performance of their product' or some other such nonsense. Im not saying they'll be right or that they will win their suit. I'm just saying I think it will happen. If stuff like the definition of a GB and and people that felt ripped of by 'Windows Vista Capable' made it to court, If this one doesn't I will be surprised. When somebody does sue, just remember -I called this one.
  13. Festivus begins with the airing of greivances!! (ok im a few hours early) My only grievance with MSFN is that there is no devil smiley. I feel that i need one sometimes. Ive even used one as an attachment before no but seriously, are there gonna be subforums for Vista in customizations (Bootscreens, Themes, Etc) maybe one for WIM too was just thinking that now would be the time to create them before everything gets all mucked together and then has to be split apart later. love the site you guys have here.
  14. Yeah i have a user running XP SP2 with a Nvidia 7300 (came with the machine) that wants me to replace his video card even though it works just fine in Windows but when he plays counter strike for more than an hour it glitches out. Needless to say, his job is not playing counterstrike so I just left it. Its been that way for weeks and until it start affecting the system outside of counterstrike its staying that way. The system has another year and a half of warranty so i might just leave it until then.
  15. Aha! Aha! what? the system still performed fine. I researched the issue and the way that card shares memory with the system doesnt meet the spec MS set for Aero. but Aero is not the only thing thats changed in Vista. Its just the only thing that your average user can see when they look at Vista. Vista isn't worth upgrading to for the home user in most cases (and some businesses). The only reason I don't have 200 of those same spec machines running Vista with Aero disabled instead of XP SP2 is because I'm still waiting for my VLS server to be setup. No, we bash it because it's yet another edition of Windows that has increased system requirements for no apparent reason other than eye candy. This is Microsoft's way of keeping up the perpetual upgrade cycle. 1. Release new edition of Windows with a couple more features that doesn't run well hardware unless meeting high system requirements. 2. Get all new systems sold with new version of Windows. 3. Cut off support for old version. 4. Watch as people buy new PCs because the newer version won't run on their older ones. 5. PROFIT! 6. GOTO 1. Yawn. same argument as 1995, 1998, 2000, and 2002. be sure to copy that somewhere safe for when Windows 7 launches.
  16. This poll sucks. You cant even fill it out without unless you have a negative opinion of vista. I have Vista Business at home and Enterprise at work (neither of which are on your poll) on my home machine that is 100% modern (quad core@2.4, 4gb ram, 8800GT) it works flawlessly on my work machine that was a top of the line XP machine about a year ago (P4ht@2, 2gb ram, 7300gt) it works ok. multi monitor support is lacking and I get occasional pausing under heavy loads. on my laptop (CentrinoDuo@2, 2gb ram, 7300LE) it works ok but has a few power saving issues The lowest spec machine I have installed it on was a P4ht@1.8, 1GB ram, Intel onboard video(without Aero which wasnt supported) and it still performed just as well as XP SP2. theres nothing wrong with Vista if you have a decent spec machine to put it on. if you put it on something below minimum spec, you can expect less then minimum performance. Whats next? people bashing those newfangled steel belted tires because they don't make them in sizes to fit your Model T?
  17. there is no reqest section on this site or any other i am aware of but you could try LogonStudio. with it installed, you can use a ton of premade logonuis without having to get knee deep in the code.
  18. this package works exactly like XPize. XPize replaces the bitmaps within the files. You can integrate the changes file by file but you cant change the resources within the files 1 by 1. more information is available Here
  19. i think you mean http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/?content=56817 gotta copy/paste the content of the post not the output of it (most forums add that ... in there for long links) we have guides here but you'll have to do the legwork yourself. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=567 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=606
  20. I cant tell how to enable it on XP but i can tell you where it is that you've seen it. Its enabled in Vista by default
  21. Because its not your computer. If the person that has to answer for its day to day operation thinks you don't need access to something, it is their job to attempt to prevent you from accessing it. If you have a legitimate academic reason ('really really gay' is not a legit reason) then talk to/email your admin and ask that they lighten up on their policies. If you present your case well you might get what you want but likely they have those polices in place for a reason. If you require unrestricted access to a PC then you should bring your own (assuming your school allows that) in most cases Id just use: User-> Administrative templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Prevent access to Drives from My Computer but you can use the nochangestartmenu in the registry (be sure to disable regedit if you do) http://www.askvg.com/all-kinds-of-restrict...2003-and-vista/
  22. unless your running a x64 edition of vista it will not recognize above 4gb. and if you are, i doubt it would make any difference since i havent found anything thatll use all of the 3327mb of my 4gb that is available
  23. not sure exactly what your looking for but i know that Unknown Devices(awesome little program BTW) uses a pretty big database in txt format at http://members.datafast.net.au/dft0802/ might look for other projects that use that database. My "Driver Management" usually involves buying a new newer larger pen drive when the \Drivers folder gets too large on mine
