  1. Could you share your batch file please?
  2. There was a hardware device for $200 some-odd dollars at Best Buy that would allow you to multi-user a single computer. Maybe a hardware solution would be the route to go.
  3. Thank you for the reply. The router sees the pc named Blue and has assigned it an ip of 192.168.2.10 I disabled all security at the moment to see if anything was interfering. I rebooted the router as well. The router sees the pc just fine, the pc pings the router pretty good, 1ms ping time. Other computers on the network connect to the net fine. The networked computers do see Blue but won't connect to its shared folder. I did a repair install of XP and I am still having the same issue with that pc. I changed the port that the pc is connected to to see if something weird was going on there. Every other pc connected to the lan now using different ports still work fine on the net. No change on Blue. Wow, I am really confused now.
  4. I gave it a go. All the entries for the protocol were there as described. I went ahead and deleted the registries and went about reinstalling the tcp/ip as described. Everything went off without a hitch. Yet still no browser connectivity. I went ahead and removed ie via the windows uninstaller, remove windows components and then reinstalled ie via the same method. Still no ie connectivity with the web. I can still ping websites, hardly any lag, 40ms ping rate. I noticed that I can not view the network though. I have file sharing set, same workgroup name.
  5. I am going to try everything at this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...Ben-us%3B811259
  6. netsh winsock reset catalog Thank you for the link. I tried that, it was successful. Rebooted. Still not able to view the web. I can still ping out though. The winsock utilities I used were WinsockxpFix_.exe and LSPFix.exe After running spybot again. It no longer detects webhancer. Ran AVG, everything seems clean. I am now running the rootkit remover app that was linked to in that page as well.
  7. In a command prompt: netsh winsock reset reboot. I tried that with no luck, same problem. I tried using sfc /scannow and it completed. It didn't give me any messages so I assume everything is right with the core parts of XP. Still not able to view the web through a browser though. I checked the firewall settings, windows firewall and added both ie and firefox to the firewall exceptions list. Still not getting anywhere I don't think. I've repaired so many network problems in the past. This one is the biggest booger of a problem I've ever had with a pc's internet connection. I am thinking there is one other alternative to reformatting the entire pc. I could do a repair install of XP over this one. Still hoping someone has the cure though. I am very interested to know and hoping I can avoid the repair install attempt as I've read it is not certain that data won't be lost.
  8. The system had the webhancer bug. I used spybot search and destroy as well as tuts on removing webhancer. Well, as it was noted to be likely to occur; all internet activity was lost as the webhancer took out the winsock along with it. So I found the winsock repair utility and that tool was successful. I can now ping out to the web via a dos window but for some reason ie will not connect to a website. I downloaded firefox from a different computer put it on cd, stuck it into the troubled system and installed it. Firefox won't connect to the internet either. I have the 10 mb local are connection icon visible. I've ipconfig /release, /renewed several times, rebooted. Reconfigured the workgroup, ran the wizard for internet connection several times. Still no go. I can ping the router, ping the web, but I can't get a browser to display a page. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  9. Somehow the number lock key is automatically enabled on boot up of windows. It didn't do this before. I must have enabled it with a key stroke but have no idea how to disable it from auto-enabling itself. I have to disable it with the function key + F11 key to login to windows, then I have to do it again once windows is up. I find it annoying, anyone with a similar laptop happen to know how to stop it from doing this? I checked the bios but there isn't an option there. Thanks in advance.
  10. In Vista I had this printer working a while back. I messed around with disabling some services and startup msconfig stuff. I forgot about the printer. So, I try to use it and now it just sits at printing in the printer queue. But it doesn't actually print. I checked in add/remove printers section of control panel and it shows it's online and ready. But it won't print. So I removed it and then tried to add it. Omg, it was harder than heck to try to get the printer to be recognized again. The only software I found from Dells site for the printer is the printer driver for Vista. I managed to add the hardware again, but the weird thing I noticed is that when I choose the item, it doesn't list USB for port. It lists Dell 725 Virtual USB port. I am so confused as this is much different than it was in XP to add hardware and printers. The printer works just fine in another computer. Any ideas on how I can properly add/config this printer would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  11. Thanks for the explanations. They have helped me understand this a great deal. After playing with it, I think I have a hang of the user access control now. Thanks so much!
  12. Thank you for the explanations. I am curious about the line: "But if my friend "Joe" has an account on computer1 but is using the guest account on computer2, then he will be prompted for a username and password, which he can then enter and get files from computer1." Sooo, it would seem what I can do is create 10 users on just one pc, and then users from 9 other computers can access shares on that one pc without my having to create 10 user accounts on all 10 computers. So if Joe, Mike, Ted, Mark, Tim, etc. have an account on pc1. Then those people can access shares on pc1 from any of the other 9 pc's. Now my question would also be, would they all have to be logged in as a guest, or could there be only one account on those 9 named George? What if George wasn't a valid user on pc1? What if he is?
  13. Couple of things I'm still fuzzy on: For Authenticated Users, do I just type Authenticated Users, and this will allow users that have an account on the local pc and logged into it to see the share from another account/user on this particular pc? Guest accounts seem simple enough, turn it on, give it a password, now anyone can access that share as long as they use the right pass. But still being able to access even though the guest account is disabled is confusing. Will anyone still see the files? "You do NOT need to have the same user accounts on each PC, although you may if you want to. Any user account on the computer that has the shared files on it will do, as long as it has a password. " This is the really confusing part. I have tried to set up a share before to users that don't have an account, but I can't figure it out. Each time I create an object with a name like walter, it just doesn't seem to do anything as I can't seem to give it a password. It seems to only work if I actually create a user named walter and create a password for it. Thanks so much.
  14. Thanks for the information. So, I add user accounts to each pc for each share that I am going to use advanced sharing with. Then I will make sure that the accounts on the pc with the share are enabled under permissions, or not if I want a particular folder to not be accessed by a particular user even though they might have an account on the system. Right so far? Then if I want someone who doesn't have an account on the computer to access a share via advanced sharing, then add a user called everyone? or is it guest? Not sure, and then how does it know what password, do I just enable guest account under users and make it passworded and then all the odd-balls will use that password(guest password)? Do they need to type guest as username or will any username work as long as they have the right password? Thanks so much! By the way, what is happening when I add a user and then the Everyone, but then deny access to everyone? It seems like even permissible users get blocked from having access. Thanks again for further explanations.
