  1. I take the lazy approach and enter the forum here, that always shows me all new posts that have occurred over a time frame I can choose, no matter where in the forum the posts are. Cheers and Regards
  2. There is the possibility that it is not actually a flip top case at all, but rather just slid back to unlatch it then raised up and leaned against the wall. Why they would picture it that way I don't know, but it's possible. Cheers and Regards
  3. I wonder why the MSFN members who are MS employees that usually promote the use of MDT for deployment have not posted a solution to the OP's problem? Cheers and Regards
  4. I do not understand why the frequent posters to this previously lively thread have gotten so offended by the thread being moved to have seemingly abandoned it to let it die. If they are not going to post here any more, as a last hurrah I would really appreciate it if they would make one final post explaining their reasons. As of now, it seems that the reason is just "Because they moved the thread when we told them not to!" That seems rather petty. If that is the only reason, I just can't understand why that is such a big deal. I can understand being upset with the temporary closure, and that was unfortunate, and IMO wrong, but that has been corrected, so why can't they continue as they were? Has MSFN been added to the same ranks of evil doers as MS and is there now a thread somewhere else where all of MSFN's mistakes are lambasted that someone can point me to? Cheers and Regards
  5. From what I read, I agree with tomasz86 that the OP wants a way to either create a new SP with everything in it up to today, or have a rollup package with everything in it after SP3 up to today. Yes -X-, he mentioned slipstreaming, and yes, nLite is quite capable of adding all the updates as you described, as is RVMi for that matter. And your solution is very flexible since it allows you to pick and choose among which updates to include to fit your particular circumstances and preferences. But wouldn't it be easier, and probably faster, even using nLite, if you only had to to add one or two items rather than the many, many items that the method you described requires? And as tomasz86 points out, if such a package existed it could be used on a live system which would make it even more useful. Until such a package can be created, if ever, and if the OP would be satisfied with a solution that is only appropriate to be used to create a new install source using nLite or RVMi, then he might want to investigate the update packs provided by either user_hidden or OnePiece/nonno fabio that are described and can be found either at RyanVM's forum, or at Wincert. Other update packs can be found by searching the net, some in various languages, and there are various tools available to modify the packs to suit your needs, or even make your own pack, but further discussion is beyond the scope of what is appropriate for this post. Cheers and Regards
  6. You could also try a more current and up to date tool, SAD2 - http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=5336. Cheers and Regards
  7. Correct. 4.5 only replaces 4.0, not 3.5.1, so you will continue to get updates for both 4.5 and 3.5.1. Cheers and Regards
  8. What have you tried? What happened? In the line -- SET par2_path="path of par2j.exe" -- did you change "path of par2j.exe" to the real path of "par2j.exe"? You have to do that. Then, save the multipar batch code above between the lines of ===multipar== as multipar.cmd and put it in the same folder as your backup batch file. Then in your backup batch file, change the line ???????????????????? to "CALL multipar.cmd c:\denemesum", without the quotes. If it does not work, what does happen, exactly? I have NOT tried this, but it should work if I understand the code correctly. I also assumed that the files you want to process are all in the folder "c:\denemesum". Cheers and Regards
  9. No argument from me about the above, and it was very well stated. Thank you. My referenced post was mainly to explain why I don't have a problem with why and where the thread was moved, I just wish the move had been executed better. As stated in the other thread, "I, too, do not care for Win 8 in general and I think that MS has made some very bad decisions for questionable motives that seem doomed for failure due to their refusal to listen to their customer base." Pointing out those mistakes, especially with multiple references and examples, is indeed very enlightening and I hope that will continue here in the thread's new home. It truly is a fun read. Cheers and Regards
  10. Why not just something like: Title: ... What has Microsoft done, or not done, lately? Subtitle: .. and related controversy and rants -- I agree that this is a very appropriate line Cheer and Regards
  11. The Deeper Impressions thread seems quite unique for MSFN, as I don't think anyone can argue. Having members that have specifically stated that they joined for the sole purpose to participate in the thread backs that opinion up. I also believe that it has been getting special privilege in a way for quite a while since I'm not aware of another thread here where as much "bashing" and making fun of any company has gone on for this long without moderator interference. That is not to say that the criticisms leveled against MS have no merit. I, too, do not care for Win 8 in general and I think that MS has made some very bad decisions for questionable motives that seem doomed for failure due to their refusal to listen to their customer base. But as much as many of the thread participants have derided Neowin and certain "journalists" as being MS fanboys, it almost seems that the Deeper Impressions thread became the opposite, or "anti-MS", and much, much broader in scope than just Window 8. As such, I can't agree that "It makes absolutely no sense at all for that thread to be anywhere else except for in the Windows 8 forum", nor can I agree that it should stay in any part of any of the technical subforums. That would be too limiting. I also don't understand the argument that moving the thread is "burying" it, since as Tripredacus points out it is now located slightly higher on the main page in a less crowed subforum. And a redirect was left where it used to be, so what's the problem? Besides which, if you utilize the http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=new_posts&search_app=forums link to enter the forum, as I do and I think many others do, it doesn't matter where the thread is located. For consistency, the "First Impressions" thread could be moved to the General Discussion area as well to keep the two threads together, if that would make everybody happy. I also don't think it is valid to say that if they can move the thread, the next thing they'll be doing is deleting posts on a whim. To my knowledge, there have been no posts at all deleted in the Deeper Impressions thread, and the fear that there will be is unfounded. Sure it could happen, and I could be killed by a falling meteorite tomorrow. But the likelihood of either happening is so small that discussing the potential seems to me to be trying to needlessly stir up fear, uncertainty and doubt. That's not to say that I, and I'm sure many others, won't be keeping a close eye on things, and if it does happen then the discussion will justifiably change. But I agree that the closure--move--reopen could have been handled better. For one, it should have happened a long time ago. And second, it just should have been moved without the closure. But those are board internal matters. We can all respectfully voice our opinion and privately ask for clarification and reconsideration. Open communication is a very good thing, and it helps everyone if it is clear why decisions were made. But too much public arguing and complaining about how the board is run, and open accusations about the staff's motives, create a caustic atmosphere that doesn't help anyone. I have seen criticism of MSFN that it isn't up to date and the main page doesn't always have current news. Personally, I don't care. I know of no free board that is staffed with unpaid volunteers that can legitimately claim to be all things to everyone. I don't use MSFN for "news" - I use it for technical issue solving, learning new technical tricks, and learning about software apps that I had not been exposed to before. Anything else is pure gravy. I think the Deeper Impressions thread should remain, and I hope it remains active and vibrant. It's a fun read. But I think the criticism of the MSFN staff is overblown and misplaced. I hope I'm not wrong about that. Full disclosure: I am not, nor have I ever been, an employee of MS or of any other software company. (Though Bill Gates and I are the same age - LOL) All the opinions expressed by me are my own and have not been coerced by anyone by any means. Cheers and Regards Edit - typo
  12. Have you tried to take the back cover of the laptop completely off to see if there might be "dust bunnies" clogging the airflow passages up? It never hurts to do some housecleaning occasionally. Cheers and Regards
  13. This is not effective, but rather just makes frequent users of the forum annoyed at the needless clutter, as you have seen. Also, posting the same or similar questions in multiple places is not necessary since frequent users often use forum links such as this one - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=active - which will pull up all the recent posts, over a time period the user can specify, from anywhere on the board. So if you make a post anywhere at all someone will see it. Try very hard to put it in an appropriate place, since otherwise it might be ignored. After all, if you don't care enough about your issues, and the board, to keep the place tidy and organized for the benefit of others, then why should we care about helping you? Another reasons for a non-response is if at first glance we can't think of anything helpful to post, we might wait to see if anyone else comes up with something. Most of us here don't post just to "hear ourselves talk". So it is perfectly OK if there has not been a response in a reasonable amount of time, say a day or two, to post again, in the same thread, with additional information about what else you have tried while you have been waiting, along with the results of your efforts. Remember we are glad to help you, not do it for you. Cheers and Regarrds
  14. Well, the reason given for the closure fits why other threads in the past have been moved and/or renamed. The staff is right that the thread veered extremely widely from its original purpose of giving feedback about specific actions, behaviors, and performance issues of Win8, to what should probably have been renamed to something like - "What has MS done lately?" - as the kindest phrasing I could come up with. And the thread should have been moved into a non-technical section such as General Discussion. I would think that could still be done. But if it is decided not to do that, then there doesn't seem to be any reason why such a thread could not be created, and the discussion continued where the old one left off. The staff might then be willing to edit the final post to include a link to the new thread. And if the staff ever changes its mind, then I believe that the threads could still be merged at a later date. Just my two cents. Cheers and Regards
  15. #14 with or without red, or #20 with or without red if the "98" could be changed to be like #14. Cheers and Regards
  16. Welcome to MSFN! Cheers and Regards
  17. I would think you should take a snapshot before you enter the xbootmgr command in the first place. I would think that by the time of the countdown at least some, if not all, of the registry changes have already been made, but I could be wrong. Cheers and Regards
  18. Probably wouldn't hurt to give PROBLEMCHYLD all the resources we can give him. Cheers and Regards
  19. I'm glad we have some very talented people on the board! (I'm also very glad I went to bed early last night. LOL) Cheers and Regards
  20. I sure hope there are others who know a heck of a lot more about graphics than I do. I assume that 4bpp means 4 bits per pixel, (meaning 16 color mode I guess?), but I have no idea how to apply that to the gradient or how to force viewing in that mode to see how it looks. But if no one else volunteers, then I'll give it a try, but no guarantees! Cheers and Regards
  21. I'll leave things in Drugwash's capable hands unless he specifically asks for help. The red I used was just a simple #FF0000, while the red I used in the SP3 icons was #800000. I don't know which would look better or which PROBLEMCHYLD would prefer. I'm color blind so don't ask me. LOL Cheers and Regards
  22. Here's a quick summary of differences between GDR and QFE as I understand it: GDR means General Distribution Release. They are released to the public on Windows Update and other places. LDR/QFE updates ( Limited Distribution Release and Quick Fix Engineering ) are on another "branch" of development, and sometimes have to be requested. They usually are created to fix specific problems. Think of it as "testing": you have the latest fixes, but also potentially new bugs or regressions. When fixes of LDR/QFE are considered stable, they are merged in GDR branch. (the "stable" version ) The KB posted on Windows Update contains the two branches, so once you have installed LDR/QFE hotfixes, you're staying on this branch. (until the next service pack or if you uninstall any updates on LDR/QFE branch). As far as which branch to use, it's really a matter of personal preference. Some prefer the GDR branch as there are fewer updates to integrate and they are slightly more stable, though they are not immune to issues. Others figure that all of the LDR/QFE updates will eventually be rolled into the GDR branch anyway, or the next SP if there ever is one, so you might as well be prepared. While there is a very small risk that new bugs are introduced, the cases where that has occurred are rare and they are usually corrected quickly with yet another update. LOL I personally have not run into a problem using the LDR/QFE branch. Cheers and Regards
  23. From submix8c's link: Seems like a "workable solutions when it comes to midi support" to me. But you are really going to have to try some things yourself and see. We can't always give everyone ready-made solutions to every problem. Cheers and Regards
  24. I like your versions much better than mine. LOL I was just editing a jpg that PROBLEMCHYLD posted. But you look like you have a much more appropriate solution. Cheers and Regards
  25. As requested, here are some sample of the "START" with "Second Edition" added. Please specify font and color preference. I can probably use any font or color you like, but it would be most helpful if you can provide a sample with exact name of font and/or color or color code number, (since I'm a little color blind). I've used Black (Almost impossible to see against the dark Blue), Red and White, with font choices of Ariel, Corbel, and Sans, just to get us started. I can manipulate both character spacing and the slide the text around as necessary, but I think the font size of 16 is about right to my eyes. Please let me know what you think. Cheers and Regards
