SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?
bphlpt replied to dencorso's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Fair enough. As we read these posts, we each sometimes see what we want to see or are most interested in, I guess, and miss the rest. Sorry about that. Cheers and Regards -
SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?
bphlpt replied to dencorso's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I understand your point, but the original intent was never mentioned as far as Win98 use, except for it being in this area of the forum, of course. . Of the posters in the thread, dencorso, rloew, TmEE, and you are the only ones that identified themselves as Win98 users, and I don't believe any comments anywhere in the thread pertained to Win98 use, limitations, capabilities, or anything else Win98 related that I can recall, except rloew's most recent one. In fact, I even forgot this was in a Win98 area of the forum. I'm not aware of any comment given that wouldn't pertain as much to any other Windows version as much as it does to Win98. But, as always, I could be wrong, of course. Cheers and Regards -

Capped (clipped, whatever) sound with Audigy sound card
bphlpt replied to Phaenius's topic in Hardware Hangout
What you CAN do, is clean it. Look, I know you are resisting doing this with all your heart. I know it will be a pain, and I know that the odds on dirt on the board causing your problems are very, very, very, very small. BUT, while cleaning the board look at it very, very carefully to see if you see corrosion on any board or cable connectors, any evidence of failed parts on the board such as anything loose, blackened areas, wires or parts touching something that they shouldn't and causing a short, etc, etc. Make sure while reconnecting everything that all connections are clean and snug. These kinds of potential problems that you might find while cleaning could be what is causing your sound issues. Assuming you find nothing out of whack, lets try to figure out where your problems might be by looking at all the pieces of the chain starting with the software. Temporarily, use something other than Winamp. I know, again astronomical odds that that is the problem, but it won't cost you anything to try something else and you can do it quickly and then get rid of the other software if it doesn't prove anything. In the hardware chain you have the sound card, the sound card front panel, the active speakers, the receiver, and the passive speakers. You say using the receiver with the passive speakers sound fine with no problems whatsoever, correct? But using the the active speakers have a problem no matter whether they are driven by the jack on the sound card or the digital coax from the sound card front panel, correct? Sound bad in the same way no matter which connector you use, jack or coax? If so it would seem the problem is with the active speakers and it has nothing to do with the sound card. You can try to prove that by connecting the active speakers to another system, ( a friend's perhaps? ), or by borrowing another set of active speakers, ( from that same friend? ), and see if the problem follows the speakers. Or try to borrow another sound card, it doesn't have to have a front panel, and see if you still have problems using the same computer, software, and active speakers. If there is still a problem then that eliminates the sound card as the source, if there is now no problem then it kind of points to something in the sound card. It's just a process of elimination. If the problem always follows your current active speakers, then assume that that's your problem and either get new active speakers or use the receiver and passive speakers and don't worry about it. Bottom line, to do much more analysis to find out what your problem is you are going to probably have to pull that case out away from your bed. Regardless of what you find to be the problem, CLEAN your system anyway and follow submix8c's suggestions of adjusting gain (amplification) and EQ in as few a number of stages as possible and as close to the speakers as possible in order to minimize the possibility of clipping and distortion. Good luck and I'll be curious as to where you find the problem to be. Cheers and Regards -
You show two different "Display Adapters", the Intel one and the AMD one. Are they both installed? Why? How, since this is a laptop? Assuming the Intel one is not used, disable it in the BIOS settings, if possible, or simply uninstall it, then AFAIK, it should no longer appear to Windows. At that point you can try to reinstall the AMD Radeon 7600, you might want to uninstall it first, and see if that fixes things. I suspect the two were interfering with each other. Either that, or I'm just totally confused. Cheers and Regards

Capped (clipped, whatever) sound with Audigy sound card
bphlpt replied to Phaenius's topic in Hardware Hangout
As I've already said, when any of those items begin having any problems, like your computer is now, that is indeed the first thing I do. At one time or another I have had each one of those items open and cleaned them. Cheers and Regards -
Is this a "straight from MS" CD, or has it been modified in any way, and if so in what way using what tools? nLite, RVMi, your own manual methods, or what? You say you've tried both an XPSP3 and XPSP2 disc. Same question for both. You say you even tried Win2K and failed. Same question. Have you tried to install XP/Win2K using any of those discs on any other computer or VM? Has this box ever worked with any OS? You say that one of the graphics cards you've tried has worked in another box running XP and you have checked the HDDs on another machine. Have you tested ALL the other components in other machines? Cheers and Regards

New method to integrate updates
bphlpt replied to harkaz's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Read MSFN form rules 1a http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=forums&module=extras§ion=boardrules From my quick read through of his method, I don't believe that he is breaking the forum rule. He provides no files directly, only shows where the user can get them from MS sources, and only describes how to use MS tools to accomplish his goals. Did I miss something? Cheers and Regards -
Capped (clipped, whatever) sound with Audigy sound card
bphlpt replied to Phaenius's topic in Hardware Hangout
I believe this to be faulty logic, though I used to believe it as well. The truth is that a properly designed, and clean, case will have better cooling characteristics due to airflow being forced through in a controlled path. Without the case door you lose that controlled path and allow at least an order of magnitude more dust and dirt into the case. Without the controlled path to force the air over the components to remove both heat and a little bit of the dust, the dust builds up even faster and you have less heat dissipation. Not to mention the likely higher fan noise you will hear in the room from an open case. Cheers and Regards -
That and perhaps which DNS service one uses? I use OpenDNS - http://www.opendns.com/ and got this when I tried what you did: C:\windows\system32>nslookup ronuk.org DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. Server: xxxx Address: x.x.x.x DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to UnKnown timed-out C:\windows\system32>nslookup www.ronuk.org DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. Server: xxxx Address: x.x.x.x DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed oput. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to UnKnown timed-out I had noticed both of those IP addresses, but hadn't put together that it was a factor of ronuk.org vs www.ronuk.org Cheers and Regards

Capped (clipped, whatever) sound with Audigy sound card
bphlpt replied to Phaenius's topic in Hardware Hangout
I found this hard to believe because I am used to seeing specs for separate "Speaker out", which is effected by the sound card's volume control, and "Line out", which is not. But it seems he is correct. I looked here - http://eighthunderworld.forumotion.com/t58-review-creative-labs-x-fi-platinum-fatal1ty-champion-series: Pic of the FPS version of the card: Cheers and Regards -
You keep saying "google". I assume you are talking about Google Sites - http://www.google.com/sites/help/intl/en/overview.html? I've never used them, nor known anyone who has. Sorry. Cheers and Regards

Sorry, no. I don't have enough experience in the area. Did you check your router/firewall settings as allen2 suggested to see why port 80 is closed? Cheers and Regards

I went here http://whois.net/whois/ronuk.org It says the Registrant for ronuk.org is in Reno, NV in US While http://myip.ms/info/whois/81.102.255.73 lists your location is in UK through Virgin Media. I am pretty much a noob at network analysis so I was unable to find any ties from ronuk.org to the IP address that you gave in my brief searches. Cheers and Regards

stuck on window 8 "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen
bphlpt replied to 8aum's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
will take care next time. But may I know the reason. Because that boot cd is considered warez. Yes I know there are two versions, one with and one without certain apps, but that is not the point. For both versions the PE itself is the problem as it violates the MS EULA. The same thing was true for the original version of Bart's until he changed it and removed the objectionable files/methods. Cheers and Regards -
I wouldn't think this should be allowed. If it currently is, that change alone might help the present situation. Cheers and Regards

Regardless of the hassles of opening up the case and getting to everything, cleaning is often the easiest thing to do, and is something that anyone can do with no particular skills required. So why not do the easiest thing first? As I mentioned in your other thread, while cleaning, you sometimes find what the problem really is just because your are looking at everything closely. It also good to do for the future health of the system. Cheers and Regards

You say "you give the web site to google and its put up on the net again". What do you mean by that exactly. Assuming you are Ron Edmonds in Reno, the domain name "ronuk.org" seems to be registered to you and has been since 25-Aug-2005 and doesn't expire until 25-Aug-2013. Do you have a fixed or dynamic IP address at home? If you are hosting the site itself on your PC at home, then it's a matter of getting that IP address associated with the domain name on all the various DNS services, right? How have you done that in the past, exactly? Cheers and Regards

How to prevent scandisk from scanning a specific drive during bootup
bphlpt replied to Comos's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Are you sure you can? Looking here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/199557 and here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/116397 I don't see any option at all to include, exclude, or specify a disk to perform the action on. Might you be thinking about chkdsk - http://ss64.com/nt/chkdsk.html where you specify the disk? I could just not be remembering things correctly since it's been a looong time since I've used Win98. Cheers and Regards -
I don't understand the meaning of the very first five words - "I wanted a i386 directory". What did he want it for? Apparently his installation was a pre-SP3 version of XP of some kind, since he says he then installed SP3. I agree with other's assessments that his install was probably either formerly from some company or warez, and an old one in either case since SP3 came out in 2008. Trying to install the SP onto an older, most likely modified, install will often end badly with the easiest and cleanest solution to start over with a clean, valid, legal source. Cheers and Regards

What is the ping.exe's "request timed out" threshold limit
bphlpt replied to kocoman's topic in Networks and the Internet
Enter: ping /? in a command box. The option you are looking for is "-w timeout" == Timeout in milliseconds to wait for each reply. If you had done a Google search with "ping.exe default timeout to wait for reply", without the quote marks, the first result on my search page was http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490968.aspx, which explains all the various options in detail along with their default values, including: Cheers and Regards -
