  2. Then, try for example the Auto Tab Discard extension! However, not the most recent version but the older one 0.5.0. When it comes to uc.js scripts or extensions for use in Mypal 68, it is very often better to use older versions (according to the era) due to compatibility issues. Here is the download link: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/3889015/auto_tab_discard-0.5.0.xpi Even this version shows some warnings in the Browser Console as there are features in the extension's manifest which Mypal 68 doesn't support. But this version is nevertheless fully working in Mypal 68.

  8. It doesn't matter, the caps have a limited shelf life. But most don't notice because they upgrade every 1-4 years. Probably, you were too young to remember the early 2000, when caps on board lived for 1-2 years at best.

  9. I had an OEM board made by Acer. In 2007 or so. LGA775. It came with an Acer ready-made PC. All USB ports suddenly died. Later I read those were affected by static electricity charges.

  12. Mighty fine! I've searched around and found this fine site Cert_updates for legacy Windows - imported root and intermediate certificates and everything works correctly, e.g. Tomshardware site.

  13. Which two buttons? The clip is about one button, my recently created custom button called Process Mode Toggler. You won't find it anywhere. However, I have recently posted some new custom buttons for UXP browsers and compatibles in my thread "Extensions and custom buttons for UXP browsers - Corrections, modifications, adjustments, and special recommendations". Given the lack of response and interest, I doubt that the Custom Buttons extension is used very much in general by our members or readers for whatever reasons which I do not really have to understand, though. And with a probability bordering on certainty even much less in Mypal 68 if at all. TBH, I am beginning to think I am the only one using the legacy Custom Buttons extension in Mypal 68. Anyway! I developed the Process Mode Toggler custom button actually for personal use in Mypal 68 to test UC.JS scripts, CSS stylesheets, extensions and legacy custom buttons conveniently and quickly in multiprocess mode as well in single-process mode. Especially to test my self-created ones. If there was genuine interest in my custom buttons and it was communicated in this way, then things would be different. But I can't see that so far. The clip I have posted should simply give you an impression of what I do with custom buttons and what can be done at all. No more, no less.

  14. I think it is well known by now that I am a fan of custom buttons. The last months, I created a couple of them for the UXP browsers as well for Mypal 68. Here is one of my latest creations:

  15. I can't say if these extensions I found do their job correctly in modern browser. This thread is about Mypal 68 which of course isn't a modern browser. It is more an old browser modified to be a bit more recent, especially its JavaScript engine. So, do you look for such an extension targeting Mypal 68?

  16. Besides rebasing several DLL files and triggering the internal memory minimisation feature, there is a third option to reduce RAM consumption in Mypal 68 called discarding tabs. Tabs, which have been loaded but not used at the moment, can be successfully discarded in multiprocess mode without disappearing in the tab bar. If it is done correctly, these tabs do no longer occupy any RAM. I found a uc.js script and a few extensions which could satisfactorily fulfill this job.

  17. If I was going to create a 9x app these days (my own retrodev projects are all DOS-based so this hasn't come up), I'd probably go with Delphi, or in the open source case, Lazarus. Either are easily obtained, there's plenty of documentation out there and since Lazarus and Delphi are compatible enough, most of the documentation for either will generally apply to both, and Lazarus still supports modern PCs (as does Delphi, but it's very expensive) so the skill set is transferable if you want to write software for new PCs.

  18. wxDev-C++ Versions 6 and 7 are the last compatible with 9x systems. https://archive.org/details/wxdevcpp_7/ And it seems that one thing went mostly unnoticed, Borland C++ Builder 1.0 is now free. https://blogs.embarcadero.com/celebrating-25-years-of-cbuilder/ https://cc.embarcadero.com/item/30934 It produces relatively small executable files with a small number of dependencies - only 6 dlls. And after applying the UPX compressor, the executable file is only 100KB.

  19. What about Freebasic? This seems to be the programming language of choice to make DOS compatible software that can run on current systems as well.

  20. Try older versions of wxWidgets - 2.9.5/3.0.5. Also look here: https://glizda.wordpress.com/2021/05/19/compiling-programs-for-windows-95-and-pentium-in-2021/ (though this is mostly relevant for Win95 support specifically, Win98/SE/ME gives you more options) For proper Win9x development, sooner or later you won't be able to escape Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0/Visual Studio 2005.

  22. You may get a few different replies here, each person may have their own favorite languages and tools. For me it has been AutoHotkey - derived years ago from AutoIt, mentioned above by @jaclaz. It's an interpreted, macro language, single-threaded so it has a few limitations in terms of speed, but it all depends on your goals. I've built my own tools years ago, and I still use a couple of them today under Linux Mint. So the language is pretty resilient at least for small scopes. If you decide to try it you should choose only version 1.0, which is the only one that can run on Win9x systems. It comes with its Help file - which is pretty well done but not exhaustive - and also its own compiler if you want to convert the scripts to executables. But on a machine with AHK installed correctly scripts can run as is, so one doesn't have to compile them everytime in order to test or run them. That's a plus when it comes to quick development. Incidentally I had already built a small tool that can compute hashes; it's geared towards media (video) files but file types are editable, it can basically compute hashes (MD5 and SHA1 only) for any file type. It's called StorageMediaCatalog and it can be found in the large package linked to in my signature below. Hope the Dropbox repository is still reachable. Good luck!

  23. If you are completely new about programming, and if it is for 9x I would advice you look into Delphi (basically what everyone else does NOT use). There are lots of (old, which in this case means good) books and manuals for the language that you can find used/second hand and - once you become familiar with it - you can still use your acquired knowledge using Lazarus (which is open source but only early version of it are Windows 9x/Me compatible) on newer OSes. I am not a programmer (at the most I can manage to half-@§§edly put together some scripts) and C and its variants (which are the alternative) are (to me at least) completely incomprehensible, Delphi is usually at least readable. For simple programs it is probably not worth the effort and I would go for some simpler environments, such as Autoit, up to 3.2.something it was windows 95 compatible. jaclaz

  24. Hello @George King! Any news for us? Although I am not a Windows XP 64 bit user, I am interested to hear whether you have made any progress in testing. Did you already install Windows XP 64 bit on your testing machine? Greetings, AstroSkipper

  25. If a user owns a computer equipped with more capable hardware, why should Windows XP be used then? Simple rule: more modern hardware, more modern operation system. I am actually here to support real Windows XP users to inform them about security programmes. And this OS is ideal for old, weak computers. There are many people outside who want to protect their computers and have to use Windows XP due to very old, weak hardware for whatever reasons. People with powerful machines can do what they want to do. Whether it makes sense or not, I leave undecided. I have given my opinion on this often enough here in different threads. And if someone wants or needs to throttle the performance of their computer, then it makes perfect sense to install Avast. In any case, all my articles and investigations are meant to spread information including my experiences whether they are positive or negative. One thing is crystal clear. The mature readers can decide themselves what they want to use as I stated long before.

  26. You are absolutely right! Avast Antivirus 4.8 was a version I liked very much, and it is even today installed on my Windows ME partition which still exists only for historical reasons. And as usual in those days, Avast was lightweight and low on resources. How can a manufacturer get so much wrong, considering versions like 18.8 or the very latest?
    1 point
  27. I thought that should be said at some point, no matter how long these manufacturers continue to support Windows XP. And as for Avast, frankly, I am not really a fan of it anymore, and certainly not of AVG. I would therefore be able to live with the loss...

  28. AVG Antivirus Free AVG AntiVirus Free edition provides realtime protection to your Windows PC from viruses, spyware, ransomware, and other malware. It can block unsafe links, downloads, and email attachments before they are run. Present version comes with an added layer of ransomware protection, which also stops hackers from hijacking your webcam. AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 is the last compatible version with Windows XP and, as the name implies, free of charge. Although AVG AntiVirus Free 18.8.4084.0 doesn't receive programme updates, it still protects Windows XP owners with regular virus definition updates. Main features: Real-Time PC Protection - Instantly protects you against even the latest threats. Web Protection - Scans your devices and blocks unsafe links and downloads. Email Protection - Scans your emails (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP) and blocks unsafe links, downloads and attachments. And to be fair, the positives first. AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 seems to have a good detection rate in recognising malware as stated in the tests performed by AV comparatives. AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 offers a real-time PC protection. It is free of charge, compatible with Windows XP, and it still receives definition updates. Now, the negatives. The installation package and the programme itself is unfortunately bloated such as Avast Free Antivirus 18.8.4084.0. Not to mention the resource consumption I had to observe which is especially a problem on old, weak computers. In my opinion, AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 is a cheap imitation of Avast Free Antivirus 18.8.4084.0. As reported by me several times, I had various problems with Avast. But AVG takes the cake. After installing, AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 caused only problems, crashed my Windows XP computer, and generated BSODs. That's why I provided the download link to AVG Clear 18.8.4084.0 to get rid of this version completely if you should suffer from similar problems. AVG or more precisely Avast does not provide an own version history for AVG Antivirus Free. IMHO, the choice between AVG and Avast is actually a bit like between plague and cholera , but I would always choose Avast if I had to. This is hopefully never the case again, though. TBH, I actually have listed AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 here only for completeness to let the users decide themselves. Cheers, AstroSkipper PS: The research for this article was hell. Useful information about AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0 was almost impossible to find. The support (Avast) only points to their own Avast products. If someone is looking for support for AVG Antivirus Free 18.8.4084.0, he can expect something. And I don't mean anything good by that. Personally, I will think three times from now on whether I write anything about AVG again.

  29. Basically, it should also be mentioned here that it is actually incredible to still have companies providing antimalware programmes for Windows XP, an operating system for which support was officially discontinued in 2014, quite apart from whether or not these programmes meet the often high demands of users. And by that I really mean all the manufacturers that still support Windows XP (and also Windows Vista) in any form in these days, such as Malwarebytes, Panda, Avast, MicroWorld Technologies Inc, AVG (actually Avast again), Qihoo 360, Glarysoft, and so on. I think a thank you for that to them all was long overdue. AstroSkipper
