  2. Apparently @D.Draker doesn't understand the concept of hyperbole. Of course it was an extreme exaggeration; I had hoped that was obvious to everyone, but apparently not. But he did leave me wondering: what exactly is an "over-exaggeration?" Is there such a thing as an "under-exaggeration?" If I had said 16 MB and an 8-core processor, would he have accused me of under-exaggerating because I only exaggerated a little? And what level of exaggeration is "just right?" Is 32 MB the "Goldilocks" level of exaggeration in D.Draker's opinion? (BTW, even 8GB and a quad-core processor is rather beyond the hardware used by the typical XP user.)

  4. Why does it matter? This topic isn't limited to "supermium on XP only".

  5. Unfortunately, not! This thread is not about common failures in terms HDDs or SSDs. That's what the topic is about. And you are wrong, unfortunately. There are evidences and physical reasons that the newly written data is better than the previous ones. Read the linked articles and think about magnetism! In terms of HDDs, stored bits can reverse their magnetic polarity, unfortunately. AstroSkipper

  6. Lubricants drying out is related to the data prevention loss. One would have to turn on the HDD once in a while, from time to time. By doing this you prevent it from being stuck.

  7. AstroSkipper, I agree with you 100% ! I'd also add simple mechanical failures due to the dried out motor bearings lubricant ! And/or dust inside (yes, dust inside of newly-made japs-made Toshiba/Hitachi) , jaclaz may just be too young to remember the DeathStar HDD from Toshiba, so let's not get too hard on him ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deskstar

  8. ... Confirmed in my copy of Serpent 52 ; to make the JS code served by that site perform its intended task (i.e. produce a file to download), load "about:config", locate pref "dom.window.event.enabled" and toggle its value to "true" - then the download should work; unsure whether toggling that pref has unforeseen security implications ... 15. There is not a single article. The linked articles are just examples to inform users like you. Physics and how magnetism works is evidence enough. And that doesn't have much to do with opinions, either. Simply put, magnetic information can change and unfortunately be lost in its original state, which is simply unavoidable. No matter whether you want to believe that or not. Unfortunately, physics does not take this into account. AstroSkipper

  16. Yep! That's riight. And we could list many other strategies for prevention of data loss and disk failures. But this thread is about the periodical refresh of disks to preserve the data on these media as long as possible. And this can be done indeed with tools like DiskFresh, Spinrite and presumably some others. However, the intervals at which something like this should be carried out are quite flexible and rather arbitrary. TBH @D.Draker, that was actually what @UCyborg wanted to discuss here.

  17. There are many different reasons for failures and data loss in terms of HDDs and SSDs. But this thread is about refreshing data on disks. That's why I didn't mention other failures or problems which of course can occur at any time.

  18. Unfortunately, you are wrong. There are indeed physical reasons for losing data. I'll give you a hint. It's called magnetism when it comes to HDDs. But even for SSDs, there are physical processes that can lead to data loss. Here is a German article to bring you a little closer to the subject: https://www.computerwoche.de/a/der-langsame-tod-von-festplatten-und-ssds,3549906 Use a translator if German is not one of your languages! Anyway! @UCyborg's concerns are fully justified and understandable. AstroSkipper

  19. Spinrite is a good tool for checking and refreshing old HDDs, presumably with a lower size. I don't know if there are any size restrictions. I already used Spinrite 6.0 in the past, and it helped me to refresh an old HDD and check a few pending sectors on it. The tool DiskFresh also sounds promising, though.

  20. Toggling the pref "dom.window.event.enabled" from false to true did the trick. Thanks for the tip! So this pref enables the Event interface representing an event which takes place in the DOM. I had a look at Mozilla. This pref unfortunately seems to be deprecated. Here is a link: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Window/event?

  22. You're right, I just found the screenshots I saved back then and they show version 2.1.3.0, release 060429. I apologize if I misled you, I was testing a lot of versions at the time and they all got mixed up in my head. Nevertheless, it was working for me at that particular time. I will try to repeat the experiments in the next few days and also try to run the BlueSoleil audio driver by writing inf similar to WIDCOMM, which seems to work in 98 without any problems (audio devices are installed and even some TV appears) but either doesn't see my dongle or requires a license and I don't know how to fix it.

  26. ... Well, as explained by Moonchild in the linked PMForums comment, the "underlying issue" involves "ghost browser windows" that keep devouring H/W resources even after tabs have been closed; are these ghost windows being killed just by reloading a tab via that extension? Unless the ghost window(s) are being created ONLY after a tab has been closed ... As also noted by MC, e10s is the way "mainstream" browser engines mitigate the underlying issue, but the upstream apps are single-process ONLY; of the roytam1 forks, St52/55 can be forced to enable e10s, but this is an unsupported configuration (which, in itself, requires "better" H/W ) that uses a half-baked multiprocess implementation (never meant to work under XP, BTW) by Mozilla from the Fx52 era, inadequate at best to handle bloated web pages (read: apps) in 2024... As for GitHub, I wouldn't want a GH tab auto-reload in the middle of me composing a New Issue or comment ... Thank you , though, for the recommendation (which, again, is no good for "upstream" and NM28, since WEs are out of the question...).

  27. You can't help with anything when you missed even the basic description for what they are for, despite it was written by the developer. All game profiles are provided by the nvidia driver, but you can add your own profiles for games missing in the driver database" https://github.com/Orbmu2k/nvidiaProfileInspector

  31. We tend to overvalue things in life. Now, what I'm gonna say is not for those who are/were in love (if such cases still exist!, so no offence !). Would you make a backup of a woman you dated for over several years ? I think not ! And even if you did, would it have any value for you in a couple of years fast forward ? It's much easier to just go out and get a new one instead. Younger, prettier . The same is with hard disks, you'll get better ones every year ! What do you all exactly store ??? Ancient software ? Outdated drivers ? Women born in the sixties ??? I'm not saying newer is always better, I too keep my old photos, for example. BUT. I'll not get unhinged if my HDDs just freaking die, all at once. To hell with them !

  32. Fellas, wow ! This all could've been said in a couple of words . Just copy (periodically) your data from an old HDD to a new one. Solved ! I don't think @UCyborglives on a volcano or walking in magnetic storm parks in the evenings !

  33. Right! That's why I included it in my collection of emergency programs years ago. I have a bag with many CDs and DVDs for emergencies (more than 100). With these programs, I can access my hard drives, partitions or hardware from the outside of my Windows system partition at any time. BTW, all repairs in terms of computers I do myself, if it is still repairable at all, and have a lot of special tools and measuring instruments for this. All of my computers are built, modified and maintained by myself. AstroSkipper

  34. If I had the need to refresh a more recent HDD, I would give DiskFresh a try. A tool similar to Spinrite is HDD Regenerator. And defragmenting a partition or restoring an image has also the effect of refreshing data. So such a special tool like DiskFresh is rather targeting HDDs which were stored outside as a backup or are used rarely. And there are certainly many other tools that perform read/write operations as one of many features. Therefore, probably no need for more such specialized tools.

  35. Just for clarification! I use Spinrite 6.0 only on old PATA HDDs. I would never think of using such old hardware-related software on current disks. Such considerations would be simply absurd. All has to be sensible or in some cases even time-period correct and has to match the necessary system requirements. However, the HDDs in my anchient Windows XP computer (year of manufacture 2000 and BIOS from 2002) are all very old and match the system requirements for using Spinrite. Newer hardware means logically more recent tools for such measures. And I already stated: AstroSkipper

  36. @UCyborg posted further sources in his initial post. And the language in which articles were written doesn't matter nowadays. We all can use Google Translator or much better DeepL And, you will find more scientific or technical information by using Google & Co, of course. Very funny! But to be honest, I actually prefer rather scientific answers. And I say that as an outspoken film lover. AstroSkipper

  37. From my very long experience with various HDDs, a year is too short, I'd say refresh data every 2-3 years or so. IMPORTANT data needs to be on 3 different backup storages, also preferably use different locations (your second/third house, for example). If you have something to hide, then NOT your house, obviously. I even used to store data in a very humid enviroment (with the measures taken). BUT 12 years HDDs (if I read your post correctly, they were constantly on) - the only place for them is a dumpster, sorry, they aren't safe to store anything on them. Don't buy the new ones from Toshiba, and don't buy the ones that have the "new" crappy SMR tech, like WD60EFAX or any Toshiba model.
