  1. Glad it is working for you when using Linux. I was able to solve different hardware problems under Linux in the past which couldn't be fixed under Windows.

  2. Though, I still find it strange that I had to use Normal password authenication method (and not OAuth2) to successfully connect my Gmail account to MailNews, but it works nonetheless. And yes, since I am a fan of old software, I agree with @modnar: MailNews is for me and a very awesome piece of email client. I even customized it with the help of this amazing guide by @InterLinked: https://w2k.phreaknet.org/mail/ IceDove is really good too, but I use MailNews so often.

  3. Yep! I also tried IceDove months ago but MailNews is unbeatable in Windows XP and ideal for me, so to speak. It works with all my email services, can be wonderfully customised with extensions and supports OAuth 2.0. I can highly recommend it. And thanks again to @roytam1 for this port!

  4. You're welcome! And thanks for contributing here! There is only one build of uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2-1.54.0 available on MediaFire at a time. The previous builds of this version have been removed by me. It was always the release with the same version number only corrected. No need to give them different sub-version numbers. I did not test my release in the BNavigator browser. In general, I only change compatibility strings in the install.rdf of an xpi file if I really know it is really compatible. Have you already fully tested my release in BNavigator? In any case, I tested my release in Pale Moon 32.5.2, and it worked there, too. The maxVersion is not that important as the minVersion is but I can update it next time. I will take these changes into account in my upcoming release uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31. Thanks for the hint!

  5. Thanks for your kind words! And you're right it is as always a game of action and reaction between two parties with opposing interests. I personally try to maintain and keep up-to-date uBlock Origin Legacy within the scope of my abilities. Unfortunately, both, gorhill and JustOff stopped further development a long time ago. Thus, we can only hope that the compatibility of the important filter lists for uBOL will be maintained.

  8. Thanks for replying! I know BNavigator very well for years. Although I have installed it in my Windows XP partition long time ago and updated it on a regular base, I use it very rarely. Therefore, a confirmation that my release uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2-1.54.0 also works properly in BNavigator should come from an user of this browser such as you. Thanks for that!

  9. Well that guy tried it. Likewise. Several years ago I still had two newer ones, the one with 233 MHz Pentium and another with 2 GHz Celeron, the latter had no working disk. They would probably still be collecting dust in the basement if we didn't move, they were disposed at that point. Some random stuff from old computers is still there. I figured mandatory ever work day 8 hours at the screen isn't exactly fun... Back on topic, found this: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/humans-suck-even-worse-thought-143339941.html

  10. I DO hope this makes a positive difference for us using NM28! I doubt it, AFAIK this is the time takes the browser to snap out when it gets stuck running a script and from user's POV, freezes in the process. Moonchild may not believe in Speedometer, which is indeed a boring benchmark, but nevertheless, the fact remains that JavaScript engine is SLOOOOOOW. 15. Thank you @AstroSkipper for your attention to updating this important extension. While I have not fully tested your new modified uBlock Origin extension (it may also be a good idea to provide a version marker of some kind between your uBlock0_1.16.4.31b2-1.54.0 releases to best avoid confusion as to which release or re-release is which), I have installed it and I especially like the addition of the Shortcuts capability. I would recommend also including compatibility in the install.rdf file for BNavigator (which @roytam1 frequently releases). The (SeaMonkey-based) BNavigator application has the following application ID: {a3210b97-8e8a-4737-9aa0-aa0e607640b9} For convenience, I have uploaded my modified version of your uBlock0_1.16.4.31b2-1.54.0 release (most recent at the time of this writing) to the MediaFire file sharing host, with the only mods being to the install.rdf file and are: (1) BNavigator compatibility has been added (using the version range of 0.1 to 100.*) and (2) the Pale Moon compatibility maximum version has been increased to 32.* (to test it myself in the future should the opportunity present itself). (On a related note, I have also already tested the extension to not work on Pale Moon 26.5.0, install.rdf limits notwithstanding). The MediaFire share link is: https://www.mediafire.com/file/74p444jwl861een/uBlock0_1.16.4.31b2-1.54.0.special-mod-by-%40AstroSkipper__plus_myChanges.xpi/file I have also attached a copy of the modified install.rdf file. install.rdf

  17. When talking about VPN for Windows XP, we have to realise that most VPN service providers have given up on protocols like PPTP or L2TP/IPsec which are suitable and compatible with this OS. Even the paid ones. OpenVPN is very often the only option in these days, if offered by the provider at all, but only due to the existence of the special version OpenVPN 2.5.4 for Windows XP. But then you have to struggle with the crappy TAP-Win32 Adapter. The older, official OpenVPN versions aren't supported any longer by many VPN service providers. All that means we have to take advertising of VPN services working under Windows XP with a grain of salt. IMHO, a lot is promised, but often not kept.

  18. Extract MPC-HC 2.1.2.7z and put the MPC-HC folder from the archive in e.g. your 'Downloads' folder and put 'mpc-hc.ini' in there as well. Drag all the content from LAVFilters-0.78.0-0.7z into the MPC-HC folder (replace existing files). Then start the program. If you want to use it with the XUL extension "Open With" (see this post) and you want to add its icon to the menu, extract the program icon with e.g. "IconsExtract", put it in e.g. 'C:\Windows\Icons' and assign it in the extension. (or download the icon from here)

  21. Tip: Use the extension "Open With" from the Classic Add-ons Archive. Then you can add the media player of your choice (and other useful commands) to the right-click menu (Screenshot). There is a mod of MPC-HC that I use now and it performs really well in XP. See this post from @mina7601. It uses youtube-dl to fetch the video, so if you have yt-dlp you have to rename it (must be in your PATH).

  24. Big recommendation for Teamspeak 2, if it's for voice chat between Windows PCs of all ages. Despite being super old, Teamspeak 2 works even on Windows 10, as well as good old Windows 98. The system requirements are ridiculously low. The codecs are ridiculously outdated (some of them convert your voice to mysterious art!), but they're efficent. Still many public servers are up and running and self-hosting is possible as well. What a nice software. Teamspeak 2 Download: http://teamspeak2.bplaced.net/neue_seite_3.htm

I shouldn't say it's a complete crap, but their requirements for "always logged in" are crappy, I agree. The same can be said about Firefox. https://msfn.org/board/topic/183138-mozilla-and-firefox-has-turned-into-evil-and-lie-to-their-userbase-leave-it-and-go-for-alternatives/

  28. I'm sorry, but this can not be taken serious in 2023 year. The first CPU with SSE2 was released in year 2000. That's more then 22 years ago. Let those people go and upgrade to something more modern. Windows XP works so much better on 4-core systems. Now we have even 8 core Ryzen work with XP. There is no excuses left for staying on none SSE2 system now. Go and upgrade to at least Core2Duo or Athlon64X2 - they are dirt cheap now. I repeat there is no excuses to seat on, like Pentium 3 or Athlon XP and demand everyone attention. Those systems are completely obsolete, they serve people well for 2 decades, now live them alone and upgrade! It is more than serious. And you do not have to understand that, either. There are users who are, for whatever reason, still interested in antimalware programmes targeting Windows XP on old hardware, whose CPU does not have more than the SSE instruction set. And it doesn't matter why. In any case, these computers still exist. For example, one of my computers is equipped with an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Thoroughbred (Model 8). But frankly, I wonder what your problem is. It doesn't concern you anyway. I think the following rule should be applied:

  34. You could change the background of the whole page to black (Format -> Background), then change the font colour to white. Or if you don't want the whole page to be black, you could create a text box, double click the borders to get to the format settings, and set that colour to black.

  35. This is awfully confusing. Although modem / router / switch are different things, their words are often used wrongly. Maybe check this site for more information: https://www.cables-solutions.com/switch-vs-router-vs-modem-difference.html So Hotwire is your internet provider? You have to ask them, if you are allowed to use your own router. It depends on the laws in your country. If your router is missing the option for Wifi, then you could connect a simple Access Point to your router. They are very cheap. Also, think about using a very long LAN cable.

  36. I checked my browsers referring to the pref browser.tabs.remote.force-enable. In New Moon 28, it is locked. Therefore, it can't be toggled there. In Serpent 52, Serpent 55 and Firefox 52.9.0 ESR, this pref doesn't exist at all. So, I have to ask you in which browser you actually want to toggle this pref. Or, did you create this pref yourself in Serpent or Firefox? Anyway! I do have a solution to implement minimal code for an immediate, automatical restart of New Moon or Pale Moon and a bit more code in the case of Firefox or Serpent (Basilisk) after toggling a Boolean pref. But first, I need an answer and some more detailed information about your configuration (browser, OS). Also I should mention that I don't use multi-process mode, and my system is Windows XP Professionaö SP3 + POSReady 32Bit with a single-core CPU. At the moment, I can test it only on this machine. Kind regards, AstroSkipper

  43. I'm not sure whether @roytam1 or other members here became aware, BUT: The story thus far: 1. MCP, effectively spearheaded by M.A.T.'s actions/decisions, forced the Centaury & MyPal forks into brutal extinction (sudden death I'd call it in sports terms...) 2. "Some person" (perhaps one supporter of those killed projects?) "flagged" M.A.T.'s GitHub account: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?p=220044#p220044 The story from now on: Chapter: Revenge of the enraged beast(s) 1. The UXP platform in its current form shall be NO MORE; the GitHub mirror of UXP (infrequently updated by M.A.T. after major Pale Moon releases) https://github.com/MoonchildProductions/UXP has been hidden/removed... 2. The main UXP development repo, hosted on Moonchild's own Gitea instance, has been archived and moved to https://repo.palemoon.org/mcp-graveyard/UXP 3. Development repos of applications Pale Moon and Basilisk have also been archived in https://repo.palemoon.org/mcp-graveyard/Pale-Moon https://repo.palemoon.org/mcp-graveyard/Basilisk 4. The development of the "new" Platform (tentatively named "Platform Codebase"), as well as that of the "new" Browser application pushed out by MCP (rebrandings are to be announced) WILL FOLLOW THE PATTERN OF BINARY OUTCAST APPLICATIONS, i.e. all code repositories SHALL BE PRIVATE (like the Interlink and Borealis Navigator ones are currently ), Source Code will only accompany the releases of executable forms (i.e. binaries). https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?p=220136#p220136 (I don't want to publicly voice my opinion here, as, most probably, forum filters will censor it... ) The above effectively puts the New Moon 28/UXP and Serpent 52/UXP forks out of commission, and with 0 hopes of a new fork based on future MCP iterations... A most sad day, indeed...

  44. That's the great thing about the internet. You could be a dog and we wouldn't even notice! If you have spelling problems, well then, you have to accept, that some typos lead to funny jokes (plenty of great jokes work that way, exchanging one letter with another, mixing two words...). You'll also have the burden to be judged by that, and even insulted. "Grammar Nazis", so to speak, will try to stomp on you, regardless of the contents of what you've written. But that has one advantage: Your bad spelling will work as some kind of filter, as it freaks out the Grammar Nazis and the spelling-tolerant people will remain calm and engage in a discussion with you staying on topic.

  45. I'd put my money on the old horse. This mouse has the balls (well one at least) to operate reliable after probably 20 years. Only disadvantage is the cleaning process, with has to be done sometimes when there is too much dust on the inner rolls. Hopefully the computer mice industry hasn't forgotten how to produce good products that last longer than a year!

  46. Okay, here we have an old 256 MB USB stick. It's slightly bigger than a finger. Of course there was a driver CD with it, when it was new. That was required to get the thing to operate under Windows 98, which didn't have a generic USB driver like later Windows versions. Surely we have genereric USB drivers now for Windows 95 and Windows 98. For whatever reason, I have trouble with them on Windows 98 First Edition and on Windows 95. It's different on Windows 98 SE, where the NUSB-driver does recognise every USB device. Does anyone here around the globe have the exact same USB stick with the original driver CD? Probably it's hard to track the name of the USB stick down. The chip on the mainboard, which was manufactured by Phison, didn't give me more information out of the internet. If just someone would have the same USB stick with more information or a driver CD, that would be fantastic...

  47. More specifications please! About your computer, where you want to install Linux on and about your experience level on the command line. Does a shell disgusts you or does it make you feel powerful? The different Linux systems (called distributions) have different philosophies. Although they behave the same in their core, their user interface look quite different from each other. I use Salix, a little system, running well on a weak netbook from 2007 with 800 MHz. But it's a niche Linux system (Slackware-based), meaning that there are less programs available for it and you have to dig deeper for manuals sometimes. The 32-Bit software is getting a bit old, but still nothing too dramatic. It's not the most user friendly, but it's very stable. My best installation on a little newer netbook is like 4 years old and it's very stable, which is characteristic for Slackware-based Linux systems. They might lack the absolute newest software though. Linux Mint is quite popular. I think people without Linux experience so far might succeed more quickly with Linux Mint, as it's easier to use.

  48. @toticwayllum1991 Sorry, there must be a misunderstanding. The interface of Vistaserv is perfect for what it wants to do: Represent the old interet times. Therefore the Windows 98 icons. I don't expect the Australian couple that runs the site to change anything there. Vistaserv has the same idea like Neocities and Geocities. A community of people having their own single webpage for free.
