My ancient first Titan from Feb. 2013, fossil, idles at 36 Celsius, in a usual case. Full load at 77 Celsius (very demanding games). Ambient room temp is about 18 - 20 Celsius.2 points

Finally managed to build a working cross-compiled version. Since the previous one was built on a different system, perhaps Windows 7 was implicitly supported then, but I had to be explicit about maintaining Windows 7 support this time around. This version also has updates disabled, so for those who don't want to see nags about updates, this may also be of interest, in addition to the speed improvements - source and binary available here: https://github.com/InterLinked1/fastfilezilla2 points

Beta versions of Windows 10 were originally known as Windows NT 6.4. It isn't exactly a stretch to assume they bumped the kernel version up to 10.0 to match its name.2 points
-
It's a marketing name to make users think the kernel is new, in fact it's still 6.x. The kernel is certainly updated, but in fact the difference between Win7 and Win10 is the same as between Vista and Win8.1.2 points

... Again, cautionary words from "upstream" : https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?p=242821#p242821 ... So, as I've stated multiple times in the past myself, "use e10s at your own risk" (I'm not, if you care to ask ) ... Browsers like Serpent and Mypal 68 in single-process mode, that's what I only use under Windows XP. Stable and ideal for old computers.1 point

Sounds about right! I have a third gen. Titan XP (2016), idles at 39, full load's at 79-81. Maybe because of the sunny side of the house.1 point

... Well. the Protonmail can't-log-in bug has now hit "upstream", with the release of PM 32.4.0 : https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30256 As is common in such cases , Moonchild was quick to put the blame on Protonmail rather than on his own browser ... It is also suggested there that @Mehmed's solution posted here isn't really foolproof, because the bodies of older e-mails, encrypted with the old RSA (2048) 4096-bit key, can't be decrypted with the newly created ECC Curve25519 key and, as a consequence, those older e-mails can't be read anymore by their original recipient ...1 point

Can't be more technically specific here since I'm not a software engineer, but generally they say to accomplish one thing better than was possible in previous versions lacking the new API. Using new API directly breaks compatibility with old OS right away, which implies you need a fallback, so you have to be explicit about implementing fallback, which in turn will be practically used only on an old OS and if they don't test on old OS, they won't leave untested code inside (maintenance burden) and call it unsupported. It gets more convoluted quickly, as if it wasn't enough as it is. I also got impression from reading certain discussions in the past that multi-process architecture is more prone to security bugs, so I think they'll want to use every last trick OS provides to tighten it. I'm sure I don't need to emphasize how security is being shouted about from every rooftop. I imagine API packs for old OS would complicate matters in similar way. Then you add the into consideration how many users still use the old OS and there's even less inclination to bother supporting old ways of doing things. I'm sure some developers will also relate to the thoughts of the police officer in the following video.1 point

v4 works here, too. Note, that the Kstub.ini with RaiseException in core.ini must placed on the right to Kexbasen,Kexbases. It doesn't work, if it is on the left side.1 point

I do use the paid version of this antivirus. Sincerely its not really a lot of concern to me but least i have a functional firewall and protection, but i do dearly understand the reasons for concern. Governments have a too wide surveillance apparatus nowadays around the world.1 point

Because Opera is Chinese (for about a decade now), and as far as I see it, they aren't concerned about any older OS in particular, it's rather because the Chinese are just slow at advancing it. But in this case it works in your favour.1 point

The disadvantage of MSE is that it depends on Windows updates to get the definitions. There are certain computers that can't get updated. Like those HP stream laptops with 32GB of space. I have tried Kaspersky and 360 Security. Both are light. But you get more ads with 360 Security. I forgot to say that I tried the new Zone Alarm in one of the computers in the office and it was very light but as soon as I installed it I had problems with network printers. They wouldn't work. Tried playing with the settings but there's not much to configure in the new Zone Alarm so I gave up on it. But if you don't have network printers it's alright. It's very light as well.1 point

SpyBot - Search & Destroy Free Edition SpyBot - Search & Destroy Free Edition is an on-demand anti-spyware scanner. It searches your hard disk for all known types of spyware, adware and potentially unwanted programs. It offers powerful features to remove these threats and thus protect your privacy. It automatically detects: adware networks, attempts at host redirection, registry modifications, and unwanted changes in the browser configuration of Internet Explorer and Firefox. If an attempt is made to redirect your computer to a different Domain Name Server without your permission, Spybot can detect and stop this happening. It also protects your privacy by removing these tracks. SpyBot - Search & Destroy 2.4.40.0 is the last compatible version with Windows XP (and Vista) and free of charge. It still receives latest definition updates in these days as reported by @Cixert. Comparison of features: Homepage: https://web.archive.org/web/20140703163113/https://www.safer-networking.org/ https://web.archive.org/web/20140701051907/http://www.safer-networking.org/private/details/#Free Version number: 2.4.40.0 Date of creation: 24.06.2014 Date of release: 01.07.2014 System requirements: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 Release notes: https://www.safer-networking.org/new-spybot-2-4-fixes-several-updating-problems/ Review: https://softchamp.com/download-spybot-search-and-destroy Download links: Installer: http://updates3.safer-networking.org/spybot1/spybot-2.4.exe Offline updater for antispyware definitions: https://www.safer-networking.org/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe Instructions for offline updating: Apply the executable spybotsd_includes.exe. Select the programme folder of Spybot – Search & Destroy. The files will be added to the Includes folder within the Spybot program folder. Screenshots: SpyBot - Search & Destroy was written by the German software engineer Patrick Michael Kolla, and is distributed by Kolla's Irish company Safer-Networking Limited. I used SpyBot - Search & Destroy a long time under Windows ME and some years under Windows XP. It served me well in those days. Thanks to @Cixert for reporting that SpyBot - Search & Destroy 2.4.40.0 is the last version which still receives definition updates in 2023! Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

go to BIOS and change the boot device from UEFI HDD to "normal" HDD.1 point

Both (Vista and 7) don't have USB3.0/1 drivers at all! So to make an install on a modern board, you need to take boot.wim (NOT install.wim) from Windows 8!1 point
-
Not sure why all the hassle then? boot.wim won't add the drivers into your system, it has a temp driver only, for the installation process only! (hence the name "boot")1 point
-
Why not? It works with the new mobos that need USB3.1 drivers for the installation (the ones that don't have PS/2). But he made a mistake, he would have needed to take boot.win, not install.wim from Windows 8, not 7! 7 is too old, and missing these drivers.1 point

Why, really? DiscardVirtualMemory is supported Windows 8.1 [desktop apps | UWP apps] https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/memoryapi/nf-memoryapi-discardvirtualmemory1 point

After all this time, does AC Valhalla run on Windows 8.1? On one hand, you need directx12 and windows 8.1 is only compatible with directx11.1. On another, perhaps a fix exists? Please let me know.1 point
-
I'm afraid not, because it would require backporting the whole shared memory API from Windows 10 build 1809 to windows 8.1. Better/easier/legally safer to build chromium from scratch (source), which is open, so anyone can try.1 point

@Dave-H I know that you, like me, have been using Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1.2522 under Windows XP for years, and you are an active member of the Malwarebytes Forum. Did you read somewhere or notice that old versions such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 are supported again with regard to updating the virus definitions? I actually thought those versions were abandoned long time ago. However, as you may have seen, I was able to reactivate this function of this old version which had not worked for a long time. See here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/184730-antimalware-firewall-and-other-security-programs-for-windows-xp-working-in-2023-and-hopefully-beyond/?do=findComment&comment=1248964 What do you think about that? Have they possibly changed their policy? Greetings, AstroSkipper1 point

Once again, for all those who, like me, have withdrawn their trust in Kaspersky, don't want to use it anymore for whatever reason, which can't be discussed here in all its facets, and still need an antimalware programme with a background guard for their old computer after September 2023, there will be another solution beyond Kaspersky. One, for example, is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro 1.75.0.1300. And there is more than this one. I will write about it soon. IMHO, Kaspersky is no longer an option for Windows XP and should be avoided due to significant security risks which were already discussed sufficiently here in this thread. And to permanently offer others something that one is not willing to use oneself is becoming more and more questionable.1 point

:OT I use the well-known, very good screenshot programme Hardcopy from sw4you. Another German software and absolutely great! I use it for more than 20 years. It is free of charge and still XP-compatible. I save all screenshots in the file format PNG and upload them to an image hoster. The hoster I use is postimage. It works as it should and is free of charge in standard mode. You have to register there, of course. :END OF OT1 point

Thank you for providing information! In the VB100 test report from 21.04.2023, Vir.IT eXplorer just about passed their test with a detection rate of 77.40% (at least 75.00% was required). Unfortunately, that is definitely not marvellous. Is this program well known or popular in Italy? In Germany, it is totally unknown and never mentioned in terms of available antimalware programs.1 point
-
Thanks but once again! I know the homepage of Vir.IT eXplorer which was already linked by me here: Quotes from or links to the homepage don't help me at all. What I need is real data based on experiences made by people who really use or have used it a longer time. Or links to trustworthy reviews. Or opinions from members knowing interesting or helpful facts about that program. A short test in a VM is rather meaningless! Anyway! Vir.IT eXplorer is an unknown candidate and therefore problematic.1 point

Sorry for that! I overlooked your request. I am very tired the last days. So, is that your *important* question? Why should "it" be at the first place? I don't understand this statement at all. And why don't you call "it" by its name? If someone reads your comment, one will not understand what you are talking about. The program you are probably referring to is called Vir.IT eXplorer. I can't find any detailed data of you regarding this program, though. Only that: https://msfn.org/board/topic/177099-which-antiviruses-are-known-for-a-fact-to-be-working-on-xp-sp3-as-of-2019/?do=findComment&comment=1242782 Unfortunately, I can't do anything with that. What did you test in detail regarding Vir.IT eXplorer? Which version have you installed? Does it have a background guard? Is it really XP-compatible? What about resource consumption in detail? At what intervals are the virus definitions updated? What are the features? What versions do exist and what are the differences? Is it free of charge? And what exactly about this program is marvellous? You see I prefer evaluable, meaningful data based on own experiences. Or links to detailed, trustworthy reviews. I am a mathematician. I need usable, informative and evaluable data. Kind regards, AstroSkipper PS: The current status of Vir.IT eXplorer in this thread can be found here:1 point

I asked a simple , *important* , on-topic question, which you, BTW, completely ignored. Yes, I added a sentence to show my opinion. I can't see how it inflates your topic that much. You better hope Mina3679 and legasyfan don't show up here, lol. Also, I already wrote my feedback about the marvellous Ferrari Italian AV jaclaz found for me. Kind regards, D.Draker.1 point

I always have the same concerns about software, regardless of whether it originates in Germany, France, Italy, USA, China, India or whatever country. There are good and bad developers, companies that can be trusted more or less, governments that do or do not influence, and so on. At the end of the day, these discussions do not serve any purpose here. This thread is meant to list all available security programs that are still compatible with Windows XP and to spread information about them. Therefore, I would ask you at this point to keep this thread clean, to stop discussions about concerns regarding the country of origin and to contribute something substantive when commenting. I need information, results of testing, recommendations, experiences made in terms of already listed or yet to be listed programs, and further options for Windows XP. My time and resources are limited. So please, be constructive and let's not inflate this thread with unnecessary discussions ! In the end, from all the options listed, the mature readers can decide for themselves which software to trust or not. And I cannot and will not take this personal responsibility away from anyone. Thanks in advance! Kind regards, AstroSkipper1 point

For those who were seeking "official" confirmation. Opera finally admits they lied . After I pressured them ? I dunno. So today I tried to play with it and got all of the missing replaced and it launches in a matter of several milliseconds and then quits. I can see the main windows with aero and it is blank (white page). This is with the launcher, of course. Also it wanted me to replace SetProcessInformation (even though it was not shown in Dep. walker). And PrefetchVirtualMemory (was shown in the walker) had to be repaced too. SetProcessInformation and PrefetchVirtualMemory are Win 8 and up. The result is the same on Vista and Win 7. EDIT: No aero on Win 7, of course.1 point

Who told you that ? The 1st alpha release works with nosandbox on Windows 7 Read here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/184046-future-of-chrome-on-windows-7/?do=findComment&comment=1235004 Later versions of 110, no. https://msfn.org/board/topic/184046-future-of-chrome-on-windows-7/?do=findComment&comment=1230307 I'm not aggressive, it was a simple question. I'm calm, thanks. But I prefer you stay on topic, calmly.1 point

Excuse me, what does it have to do with "future of chrome on windows 7" ? I'm new here, and I was warned right on the first instance by @Dave-H, when asked a question in the wrong topic, I'm just wondering how it seems totally fine when some others here, you for example, are freely allowed to do what they want. Is it like your off-topic post No. 1992779 ? Just seems unfair. And no sandbox is for Windows 7.1 point
-
Yeah, I tried too and hacks or no hacks, starting from 111 chrome is gimped on Windows 7 or 8.1, I mean, what good would it be without the settings section ? I'd even say, 110 crashes quite often, even with nosandbox. The last stable is 109.1 point

Added new missing API, for example PrefetchVirtualMemory, which is obviously missing in Windows 7. Why is it needed !? Hi to those who runs windows without their page file.1 point
