  5. Counter-Strike 2 is coming. Beta supposedly runs on 7 and 8.1 unofficially, but official requirement of Source 2 based games has been Windows 10. Additionally, Steam is pulling the plug on Windows 7 and 8 next year, as must have been brought up already. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2952326766 https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Counter-Strike_2

  6. Update notification! Malware Hunter has been updated on 17.07.2023 and is now available in version 1.169.0.787. It is still listed to be compatible with Windows XP. Accordingly, I updated my article. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  8. @Dixel I think you are confusing matters: 1) how to batch rename files 2) how to open a command prompt when in an explorer window in the shown directory/folder To batch rename files (#1 in the above list) there are of course working command lines and/or you can write a dedicated batch, BUT there are a number of dedicated third party tools with more (or easier, or enhanced) features. My remark and suggestions were ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY about how to open a command prompt in an explore window (#2 in the above list). For that (open a command prompt in an explorer window, #2 in the above list) there is NO available function in Windows XP, there is something similar (and I later posted a link to an article on petri.com about how to use the existing feature) that however opens a command prompt in a selected directory, NOT in the currently displayed one. To do the latter (open a command prompt in an explorer windows in the currently displayed directory) there is the need for a third party tool, and I posted a link to two of them, one tested and used successfully by me for over 10 years, and another one, not tested by me, but said to be working just fine, more suitable to later versions of windows. jaclaz

  9. @win32, as promised, the solution for both methods (local and normal), was to redirect Opera browser to the original non-modified shell32 from SP2 (modified in 2009). I forced the path through my starter app., (the one with the Opera icon, if you remember). Now dialogues open up just fine.

  10. Thanks, the thing is, they say that command doesn't work on bare XP SP3, but Steve, Steve Cochran, Ph.D. MS-MVP 1998 - 2014, who has Ph.d and MS-MVP, doesn't agree with them. See this post. https://msfn.org/board/topic/176299-latest-version-of-software-running-on-xp/?do=findComment&comment=1249632 https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-do-i-batch-change-file-extensions-in-windows/f1b4219c-f2fe-4f25-83de-55ce8e7a71f8 MS-MVP is very serious, see here: https://mvp.microsoft.com/en-US/pages/what-it-takes-to-be-an-mvp So, to be honest, I don't know whom to trust. I heard @jaclazis an experienced member, on the other hand, we have {at least} one more user to support him, but in contrast to Steve, I highly doubt @VistaLover has ever won the Most Valuable Professional award at Microsoft, or even has a Ph.D., I can't find that information about jaclaz either, also. Looks like they both lack both, so, I want to trust them, but I just don't know... On my old XP laptop- it works, perhaps I already made the reg. fix log tome ago, I honestly don't remember.

  12. FYI, Ultra Adware Killer has been updated to the version 10.7.9.0 on 20.07.2023. I tested this version under Windows XP. Unfortunately, the versions 10.7.8.0 and 10.7.9.0 are no longer compatible with Windows XP although some websites, as for example Softpedia, still list the most recent version 10.7.9.0 falsely as compatible. Therefore, the last XP-compatible version seems to be 10.7.7.0. Accordingly, I changed the provided download link, which would otherwise point to an XP-incompatible version, and updated my article completely. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  17. Right! This function does not exist in Windows XP SP3 natively but in Total Commander. You can easily open a CMD window in whatever folder you want by clicking onto the entry Open command prompt window. It is located under the menu bar item Commands.

  18. ... I often do that myself when I have to batch-change file extensions inside a directory, however it won't help me much when needing to change something in the actual filenames ; and one other thing: the functionality you described in the first line requires at least Windows Vista, as it's not present by default in Windows XP SP3; I have seen, though, over the years, some .reg files or other utilities intended for XP that try to emulate it; e.g. https://techjourney.net/add-open-command-window-here-to-windows-xp-folder-with-powertoy/ https://petri.com/add_command_prompt_here_shortcut_to_windows_explorer/ [Use at your own risk! Have not tried myself...] Regards.

  25. But Erik wrote: "full DPI processing, decryption and content (payload) analysis (e.g., SharePoint file transfer)". Ok, another good example of using DPI would be LinkedIn being discussed here. LinkedIn is totally forbidden in Russia, which is no wonder for a totalitarian state, so we leave it alone, but what we are interested in - how they block it. "...internet providers have already cut access to the site, which has more than six million members in Russia." - BBC UK Now tell how their internet provider can cut off the access without DPI and MITM ? (more of a rhetorical question). So they block LinkedIn completely (incuding ordinary browser visit), not only their app that was found by using its pattern. See the red pics from their largest ISP with proof. Source: "LinkedIn blocked by Russian authorities" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-38014501 Note: the article is 2016, they do it for a long time.

  30. I reviewed the entire thread without noticing any mention of antivirus software. A separate thread might be warranted whenever Microsoft stops providing definitions for Security Essentials. (I presume that many are still using MSE.) Meanwhile: Avira officially ended support for Windows 7 and 8.1 on December 31, 2021, yet still has a Windows 7 download page that would presumably give you a legacy version. Bitdefender says they will continue support until January 14, 2024. Emsisoft no longer supports new installations on Windows 7 or 8.1. ESET ended support for Windows 7 and 8.1 after Version 16.0 (a little surprising since ESET supported Vista longer than most non-Chinese AV vendors). McAfee ended support for Windows 7 and 8.0 May 4, 2021, but still supports 8.1 AFAIK. Sophos sells Extended Support licenses for Windows 7 and 2008 R2.

  31. ... This means they're targeting Win7 as minimum, now, either in their source code or the compiler they use is... In Vista, K32EnumProcessModules function is found inside psapi.dll, but in 7+ it was moved to kernel32.dll: see below: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/cppblog/windows-sdk-v7-0v7-0a-incompatibility-workaround/ If the actual source code is still compatible with NT6.0, then recompiling with defining _WIN32_WINNT=0x600 or PSAPI_VERSION=1 will produce a binary launching under Vista SP2 fine...

  32. Yes, but none of them work. The installer for both versions upon opening, give "The procedure entry point K32QueryWorkingSetEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll." error. Portable versions for both versions give the same error upon opening. Dependency Walker shows this:

  34. From what I gather, @msfntor is a highly religious person and lives by the Bible. He doesn't celebrate Halloween, saying it's "satanical", etc. Lizards are missing from his weird dream and this could be seen as somewhat satanic and anti-bible because according to the bible all species should be present 'cause they are all God's creations. I'm not religious, I might be wrong, and I'm not good at reading dreams. I don't know why he asked me. My dreams tend to be more vivid and forecasting, I'd say. So I think it's not a miracle, it's otherwise, it's a sign of disaster - the World without lizards.

  41. MiniBrowser from this topic is based on Chromium 87.0.4280.66 and consumes only about 100mb of RAM, despite being newer than 360. Also, it has only three instances running at the same time, compared to the four of the 360 13th version ! The screengrab is from the same "Emma" PC with 8GB od RAM.

  44. You're very welcome ! Someone has a problem with you ? Just call me © . This screenshot I took on my "Emma", the torture PC, I mean the PC for tortures, testings, etc. Emma (2008) has only 8GB of RAM and an ancient GTX 780 Ti with only 3GB of VRAM (a fossil from 2013). And it consumes 560MB with only one empty page and no extensions ! Not to mention I switched off much bloat via flags. I don't have the v. 13.5 installed on my main 32GB PC anymore, but it had even higher RAM consumtion on it. EDIT: Emma name was given to honour mr. Bean and his girlfriend.

  45. Don't use Firefox, sorry, don't know. But I even used 360 Explorer for banking and still alive, that being said, I never keep huge amounts of money on the card, only 1000 - 1100 Euro max. And the card is a debit one, can't go beyond the current amount. And this is only if I need to order something from Holland or Germany, because we actually don't need cards at all, everything is available for cash and plenty of stores.
