... Thanks for the confirmation! Can't replicate. Maybe 2023-07-70 was updated? I downloaded just today, after word the about:addons thingie was working. @dmiranda! The download dialogue window in Serpent 52 looks broken from time to time. Here are two screenshots to show you the issue: One time as usual: The next time broken: Cheers, AstroSkipper2 points

@j7n, I'm sorry to inform, what you say won't pass the @jaclaz's certification, since he will obviously doubt that you had enough data points, unless you actually deal (and has dealt for years) with many, many (hundreds, thousands) hard disks, while actually keeping a log of periodical reads, failure modes, etc.2 points

Right! I definitely can confirm that. Surfing the web with IE 6, malicious windows were popping up left and right. All became better when Firefox appeared and the first content blocker extensions. I started to use Firefox with extensions from the very first. And I also think that software got more resilient over the years in general. Yep! I think so, too. Although there are a lot of things I do manually, it does not make sense to re-invent the wheels.2 points

Subject: ZoneAlarm Here is my assessment on the firewall solution ZoneAlarm I wrote in another thread in June of 2022: Nevertheless, I reserve the right to decide whether or not to write an article about ZoneAlarm. At the moment, it is on my internal list of security programmes. Maybe, someone who is still using ZoneAlarm on Windows XP can post their experiences here. The more, the better! @Monroe Are you still using ZoneAlarm on Windows XP? AstroSkipper2 points

With Mobilizon, you can create events, share those events as widely as you wish, and keep attendees up to date on developments—all without Facebook required. (You can still share events on Facebook, if you're into that sort of thing.) Mobilizon is free and open-source, and it federates with other services via ActivityPub. https://www.pcmag.com/picks/quitting-twitter-try-these-alternative-social-media-networks2 points

@Cocodile There are no such things as jaclaz's certifications, let alone blessings. @j7n In theory yes, in practice, unfortunately, in the best case you will collect a number of vague, inaccurate reports creating the typical GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) situation. jaclaz1 point

@jaclaz You compared Sacramento data center, that runs expensive Enterprise hard drives 24/7, with the consumer grade hard disks MSFN members use, really? My consumer grade hards don't even have that parameter SMART 189 High Fly Writes. What's the point of such comparison? Please enlighten.1 point

I'm sorry, I have to disagree, Hard disk Sentinel warns ahead of any failure, especially if we talk about Seagate (which one shouldn't purchase anyway, due to the high failure rate). From my observations, Seagate will fail within several days or weeks after HDD Sentinel showed its warning. One thing to point out, this software does not always know newest HDD models.1 point

I agree, but when one just points out to the facts, no MSFN rule against it, no rule that would forbid to name the official investors/owners. Like you wisely pointed out, we are the customers, and have the right to know who owns them. "Russia funded Facebook, Twitter investments through Kushner investor." "Institutions with close links to Kremlin": https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/nov/05/russia-funded-facebook-twitter-investments-kushner-investor "Facebook is taking that rumored $200 million investment from Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian investment group... giving Facebook a $10 billion valuation." This one is from 2009, so $200 million/ $10 billion was a lot, lot more. https://techcrunch.com/2009/05/26/facebook-takes-that-200-million-investment-from-the-russians-at-a-10-billion-valuation/1 point

Boots on the ground is not enough, one would always want to conquer hearts and minds. It was always the weakest point of all soviet strategies, but they learn and progress in that subject, hence the enormous amounts of money they invest in propaganda since 2000, I can say much more, but I shan't, since it's defo not for MSFN. On the other hand, it's 100% related to everything digital we now have. And what we have, all media has only one, left point of view. There's simply no right media anymore.1 point

For me, ESET never was, not only it marked legit copy protection game files as "viruses", it also deleted important files on my XP pc and put them to "quarantine" forever, I was not surprised to see it still does! To be fair, I gave it a chance in the past. I remember, I even lost my online registration for the DVD check of Sacred 2 (based on securom). As for your OT question, I fail to understand, why would you be interested, if you discarded ESET anyway? I could only guess, but If you want to be recruited or renew some previous pre-1991 arrangements, I'm sure there's no need to go to Bratislava, and I'm definitely not the one to talk to! NOD32 "Such file could contain valuable information, and losing it is certainly not what you’d wish for" https://hetmanrecovery.com/recovery_news/how-to-return-files-if-eset-nod-deleted-or-placed-them-in-quarantine.htm1 point

The video at least confirmed that the P7 (or P10) connector is with all 3.3V. As said I personally never heard of a PFC (Power Factor Correction) PSU giving issues, but that doesn't mean much, the catching fire could be true or only a metropolitan legend for all I know. From what I know the PFC is essentially circuitry on the "high voltage" side of the PSU (AC mains) and whether a PSU has (or has it not) is (should be) irrelevant on the low (DC) voltage side, the whole idea is to transform an reactive load on the grid into a (almost) resistive one, thus old dansdata article explains it: http://www.dansdata.com/gz028.htm jaclaz1 point

Your review is almost 3 years old. Therefore, it doesn't refer to the current version. I will list a review (or more) which is more recent if available. And it doesn't matter whether it is favourable or not. Furthermore, I'm not at all surprised that your linked review is unfavourable. TBH, I had expected nothing else. Since Covid, it seems that negative is the new positive. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

There are instructions out there how to patch latest Flash to disable EOL restriction. I was the first to bring it up on MSFN. Some even opt to use Flash version that continued to be developed for Chinese market (only security fixes I guess) after it was EOL for the rest of the world, but I didn't follow that. In my most recent experience, NPAPI version for Mozilla-based browsers and other browsers implementing NPAPI was most performant, the worst was ActiveX in Internet Explorer, though for some reason it was much better in the pre-Chromium Edge, a bit better than NPAPI even. Of course, standalone version keeps it simple by not being tied to the web browser's plugin architecture.1 point

There aren't lots of options . And I'd suggest avoiding Linux at all costs . Like @Mr.Scienceman2000 wisely admitted , you'll just switch to another master and I agree . I'm also a gamer , but I try to stay with Vista . The experience is very good so far . Also , don't waste time on XP , there's nothing to gain for you there at all , should be obvious. Win 7 vs. Vista - Vista is the clear winner in speed and quality (sound , rendering and even HD playback). Now you wrote you have GTX970 , I can suggest some very good Vista drivers.1 point

Not enough Euros ? You're absolutely right ! I'd say GTX780 Ti is even faster and it overclocked like hell ! All that new "low power" junk stuff is simply not made for good overclocking ! My prev. GTX780Ti was way more powerful than 980 , so my advice to the OP is to find it in a good condition to replace his GT1050 .1 point

New games are simply not possible with his current hardware. I read the OP has GTX 1050 , which was too weak , even at launch . So I'd say win 7 is the max OS that could make sense. His 6 year old low budget card , very similar to GT950 . Even GTX960 would be faster , esp. 4GB vesrions . And I have GTX980 , new titles don't run well . Poor FPS. Not pleasant at all. Hell , not only new , I started to notice poor FPS in 2017-2018.1 point
