  1. Off-topic of course, but I concur. POSReady updates have never given me any problems, but they did give me an extra five years worth of security updates!

  2. Greetings. Please say to me, if i do something wrong... https://mega.nz/folder/68dj2YTY#As2w31IO4Smr7gy6p1ciSg OpenSSL*.7z - development files and binaries of OpenSSL (for testing purpose) 3proxy*.7z - package of 3Proxy + SSLPlugin. After launch bin\3proxy.exe it open port MITM 3128 (due to configuration stored in 3proxy.cfg). Additional options - "toggle_certstore" - to not save certificates in certs folder and "ssl_ciphers" - list of allowed ciphers in OpenSSL notation. Default "ALL" (~140ciphers), full set - "ALL:COMPLEMENTOFALL"(~190 ciphers) ProxyMII*.7z - package of ProxyMII + Python3.7.1. After launch ProxHTTPSProxy.exe or ProxHTTPSProxy.bat it open MITM port 8079 (due to config.ini) I'd tried to add to OpenSSL very weak cipher (DES-CBC-SHA) as 'last hope' to connect - but it doesn't work as expected. IE8 can connect with OpenSSL s_server via this cipher, but both 3proxy and ProxyMII throw an error. Yes, it must work without PosReady. At least i'd checked it on fresh virtual WinXP SP3 without additional updates (made sure there was no 256bits ciphers and TLS1.1/TLS1.2). Python 3.7.1 required Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable. In 3proxy next config open 3128 as MITM and 3126 as standard proxy for all domains except *.google.com and msfn.org (they will be redirected to 3128 port and, therefore, MITM). Domains must be listed in one line, without spaces, with comma as delimiter. ssl_mitm proxy -p3128 ssl_nomitm allow * * *.google.com,msfn.org parent 1000 connect+ 127.0.0.1 3128 allow * proxy -p3126 Best regards.

  3. How to set up and use the TLS 1.3 proxy ProxyMII Unpack the archive and copy the folder ProxyMII to a location of your choice. Install the file CA.crt to Trusted Root Certification Authority under the account local computer manually. I use the certificate generated by ProxHTTPSProxy REV3e, provided in my release of ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu 3V1. Or use my contained ProxHTTPSProxy CA Certificate Installer and Uninstaller to do that automatically. If so, you have to overwrite the already existing CA.crt in ProxyMII's program folder by the one of my release. Enable the proxy settings of IE in the Internet Options -> LAN settings, i.e., check mark "Use a proxy server for your LAN", and click on Advanced. Go to the entry Secure and enter the Proxy address 127.0.0.1 and the port 8079. Update the file cacert.pem to have the most recent one by using my cacert Updater Fixed (Recreated). Start the proxy by executing the file ProxHTTPSProxy.exe. Ensure that your firewall doesn't block this proxy. Add it to your exclusions list or allow its connection. Do not forget to disable the proxy settings of IE when ProxyMII has been closed. This short tutorial refers to the second and the latest release of @cmalex's ProxyMII. Now, if all steps above have been executed, it should actually work. Perform a test in your Internet Explorer on the websites of Qualys SSL Labs and BrowserLeaks. If you want to do further tests by using one of roytam1's browser editions, you have to import the certificate CA.crt in the browser's certificate storage additionally and change the browser's proxy settings, otherwise it won't work. Kind regards, AstroSkipper

  4. Greetings. SSL3 AES128-SHA (aka TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA) exists on Your's screenshots. So at least one shared cipher exists... But on settings You have SSL3 disabled (very strange that Your's settings and clienttest.ssllabs.com show differ things). Are You able to enable SSL3? Via settings or registry... In registry please check HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\Schannel\Ciphers and HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\Schannel\Protocols My settings is in attachment. Any item enabled, if key Enabled=0 doesn't exists. For quick check You can use full build of OpenSSL with testCipher.bat in bin folder. After run it ask once for certificate data(just leave empty) and must run ssl server at port 44330 (please just ignore certificate errors). https://mega.nz/#!3tF0zazQ!GBR8-4Zqnzd2D_UWf6CRLkqWJ1Au5TYEpvnWeXTExzU Best regards. UPD: You can add -cipher "ALL:COMPLEMENTOFALL" to last command (last string, after -www) to use all possible ciphers. schannel.zip testCiphers.bat

  5. Do you want to upgrade your Windows 7/8/8.1/10 PC to Windows 11, but your PC doesn't meet the requirements? Well then, this tutorial is for you! These are methods that can be found anywhere on the internet, but I wanted to post it here. With this tutorial you should be able to install Windows 11 on any PC that supports Windows 10 x64, as there is no x86 release of Windows 11, so if your processor is IA-32 only, then I'm afraid you're out of luck. If you do have a 64-bit processor, but only 32-bit EFI, and no BIOS access, then I'm afraid that you also can't install Windows 11 on that PC, as again there's no IA-32 release of Windows 11, and there isn't a way to boot 64-bit EFI files on 32-bit EFI (at least for Windows). However, if you are running Windows 7 x86, and have a 64-bit processor, then yes, it is possible to upgrade to Windows 11. I will later post a method on how to do so. Method 1: Install Windows 11 with the Windows 10 Setup (clean install ONLY method, does not work with the modern setup, therefore it cannot upgrade) (best clean install method): 1. Get a Windows 10 x64 ISO. You can do this with the Media Creation Tool, or with Windows ISO Downloader. 2. Copy the contents of the ISO to a folder. Go to sources and delete "install.wim" or "install.esd". 3. Get a Windows 11 ISO 4. Mount the Windows 11 ISO. 5. Go to the sources folder, and copy "install.wim" or "install.esd" 6. Paste the install.wim/esd file into the Windows 10 x64 sources folder. Here’s how to make it into an ISO: 7. Download and install NTLite. https://www.ntlite.com/ 8. Once you have installed it, select "Free", unless you have a license. 9. Click "Add" > "Image directory" 10. Select the Windows 10 setup with the Windows 11 "install.wim/esd" folder. 11. Right click on "install.wim/esd", and click "Create ISO" Method 2: Upgrade/Install Windows 11 with the Windows 10 "appraisesres.dll" file (upgrade + clean install method, this method ONLY works with the Modern Windows Setup, using the other setup will still give you the "This PC can't run Windows 11" error) (WARNING: This method may not work for newer builds. It will definitely work with 21996, some versions of 22000, and maybe also some slightly later builds): 1. Turn off your Wi-Fi. If you don't do this, it will still give you the error. 2. Get a Windows 11 ISO. 3. Copy the contents of the ISO to a folder. Go to sources and delete "appraisesres.dll" 4. Get a Windows 10 x64 ISO. You can do this with the Media Creation Tool, or with Windows ISO Downloader. 5. Mount the Windows 10 x64 ISO. 6. Go to the sources folder, and copy "appraisesres.dll" to the sources folder into the Windows 10 ISO. 7. Paste the file into the "sources" folder in the Windows 11 directory. When you run the setup, it should check to see if it is capable for Windows 10 and not 11. If you want to make this into an ISO, refer to the instructions in Method 1. Method 3: Install Windows 11 using DISM, DISKPART, and BCDBOOT (clean install only) This method only requires a Windows 11 ISO. If you are trying to dual boot on the same hard drive, the partitioning steps will be different. 1. Boot your Windows 11 media 2. Open a command prompt window (You can do this by pressing Shift+F10) 3. Open diskpart by typing in "diskpart" in the command prompt window. If you are installing on BIOS, refer to the Legacy commands. If you are installing on UEFI, refer to the UEFI commands. Legacy: diskpart sel dis 0 clean (this wipes your hard drive) conv mbr cre par prim size=100 form quick fs=ntfs label="System Reserved" assign letter w active cre par prim form quick assign letter c exit UEFI: diskpart sel dis 0 clean (this wipes your hard drive) conv gpt cre par efi size=100 form quick fs=fat32 label="System Reserved" assign letter w active cre par prim form quick assign letter c exit 4. After partitioning the drive, go to the sources folder by typing in "cd /d D:(where your Windows 11 media is)\sources 5. Type in the following commands: dism /apply-image /imagefile:install.wim(.esd) /index:(1 for Home, 6 for Pro) /applydir:C:\ bcdboot C:\Windows /s W: /f ALL bootrec /scanos bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd 6. Now reboot. Windows setup will then continue normally. If it doesn't boot, run Startup Repair. Method 4: Install Windows with Rufus (clean install only??) (simple method) NOTE: You will need a USB flash drive for this method. 1. Get a Windows 11 ISO and a USB big enough for it. 2. Download Rufus. https://rufus.ie/en/#google_vignette 3. After downloading Rufus, open the application and connect the USB. 4. Click on "Select". Select your Windows 11 ISO. 5. Under image options, you will see three options: "Standard", "Extended", and "Windows To Go". Click on "Extended". This will bypass all of the additional Windows 11 requirements. 6. Click on "Start". After the tool is finished making the ISO, if you want to make this into an ISO, refer to the instructions in Method 1.

  6. Good ... I'll count on you in the jury box. I got a good lawyer and he said this: “I have some good news and some bad news.” “What’s the bad news?” “The bad news is, your blood is all over the crime scene, and the DNA tests prove you did it.” “What’s the good news?” “The good news is, your cholesterol is 130.” Or: I could always plead insanity and my psychiatrist is highly regarded: Doctor Hannibal Lecter MD (know none of his patients have come back to give him negative review, lucky I found him and just in time it would seem) EDIT: Apologize for going off-top to the author and I will eventually get to trying this project out. Just been dealing with a lot in real life and caught up, you all know, we're all just trying to live and never easy for anybody. Hope every knew I was/am joking and all but all kidding aside, should be careful as some might actually think otherwise.

  7. Each computer I'd have to install Windows XP Professional SP3 to would get all POSReady updates, unless it owned a CPU with SSE instructions set only. In such a case only the POSReady updates until July of 2018. BTW, this @XPerceniol guy is a good one! Therefore, I plead for acquittal. Neither electric chair nor jail!

  8. Oh yeah ... I tend to struggle to stay on-topic most times. Wish I were kidding but my mind does drift often .. oh well, thank you MSFN staff for putting up with me. Agreed ... I think 5 years extra was worth it, but if I decided to fresh install again, I'd likely not update to pos ready again. See .. here's the thing: I'm going down anyway for the following: 1. Once I ordered a bagel when I knew it was the last one and an old lady behind me wanted it --- see how cruel and mean I am. 2. When I go to the coffee shoppe I take extra sugar packets when the cashier has their back turned and whistle and pretend I'm innocent as pure driven snow -- very mast man, am I. 3. I've removed all the tags from pillows and mattresses -- shhh don't tell anybody. 4. I've pulled the fire alarm just to be devious. Could go on-and-one... So "Jail" .... unfortunately, for me, its the electric chair.

  10. I never had any problems with the POSReady updates. Therefore, I can't confirm your observations. PS: Maybe, your garage computer possesses a CPU with SSE instructions set only. The POSReady updates weren't compatible with such systems since August of 2018.

  13. @XPerceniol, I found that on social.technet.microsoft.com: Link: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/de-DE/cd9e1fc2-e209-49f4-ae4a-78222969c6b2/some-settings-are-managed-by-your-system-administrator?forum=winserversecurity Maybe, it helps you to get rid of this problem. I have marked for you the important parts.

  14. First, enable again your super admin account! It is a very important account to do things which can't be done with a normal admin account. And perform a Google search referring to the issue "Some settings are managed by your system administrator". I am sure there will be a lot of hits. Windows XP is the best documentated OS ever. Furthermore, there are some tools to reset permissions and presumably, the group policies. Perform a second Google search by entering "reset group policies in Windows XP". That's what I would do. All of these problems are well documentated, some articles have to be read by using the wayback machine, of course. 15. There is also the Rufus method - under ''image option'' select extended windows 11 installation (no tpm/secure boot) make sure that the Partition scheme is set to GPT and the Target system is set to UEFI (non-CSM) .

  16. I disabled the super admin account and use my DELL account normally. Sometimes I'll switch to power user or user if trying out new things. Honestly, I'm getting the sneaky suspicion I've get trouble in group policy but wouldn't know where to began with that. Can't you just reset that to defaults?

  17. Hi @Dave-H, as mentioned in previous posts, @cmalex will provide a corrected archive of his proxies due to licensing problems. But I think some of us have already downloaded the second release, and a few of them had problems to get it work. Therefore, I wrote a short tutorial. Didn't you still download it?

  18. Right! Definitely no one is interested in wether it is legal or not. And certainly not me! POSReady updates are cool , and they work perfectly! I use them since 2014. Everything is fine, and most of it is good. BTW, no one is forced to use POSReady updates in their system. To each his own! Cheers, AstroSkipper

  19. Hi to all and especially to @cmalex and @XPerceniol, I think the problems, some users obviously have with the proxy ProxyMII, can probably be traced back to a misconfiguration. I will write a short tutorial on how to set up and use this proxy correctly. And hopefully, it should actually work properly then. BTW, a proper configuration of ProxHTTPSProxy was already described by me in the first post of my proxy thread in the section Configuration. Just a reminder! Here is the link, once again: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183352-proxhttpsproxy-and-httpsproxy-in-windows-xp-for-future-use/?do=findComment&comment=1213600 The only difference is that the proxy settings of ProxyMII have to be done manually. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  22. Oh, I just really liked the quote from George and up-voted it. I know, under some Communist regimes the mentally ill were killed off, as well as other things they deemed to be defective or harmful to their "cause". Yeah, at least, here, I"m able to live on my own and sustain a (somewhat) independent existence , but, sadly (and I hate to say it), some of those programs we have could go away if the pendulum swings too far to the right. Please don't assume I'm far left, I'm not, just trying to survive and need assistance (some social programs) and I don't think the govt taking care of the ill is socialism. Sorry ;( So, yes, better here than other horrible place and I'm just barely getting by and live a VERY humble lifestyle if I can even call this "living". Day-by-day and moment-by-moment is it. EDIT: Sorry, had to correct all my typos.

  24. It was a few years ago that the county executive had decided to back some plan to ban plastic bags because one time he was driving in the city, he saw plastic bags stuck to trees. And he then decided that banning the use of plastic bags was the solution and not say... organising some groups to clean up the garbage. And everyone also conveniently forgot the last time we banned plastic bags in the 90s that didn't end up lasting. For one it was the 90s and the alternative was some sort of composite bag made from corn or something that would fall apart or biodegrade way too soon... like still at the store. So they made everyone use paper bags. Then the environmentalists made a big fuss about all of the trees that were being cut for the bags and they went back to plastic. So now that we are back to paper (although many places are still using plastic despite the ban) I am counting the days until the crying over cut trees is heard again.

  25. Don't be fooled, even for an instance. They are a terrible idea. Environmentalists should not settle for the "lesser" (if it is that) of two huge evils. There is a third, better way. Yup, exactly. And consider how toxic most urban areas are these days, most environmentalists live in or are relocating to rural areas. These are the bright green lies society is banking on: that in the future, we'll have better technologies that will make the problem disappear. The problem is *that's not going to happen*, it's not physically feasible, and all of this is destroying the planet *right now*. Ditch your "smart" or "dumb" phone altogether, and get a real phone. My 1957 Western Electric 500 blows your phone out of the water any day. Or any other phone manufactured by Western Electric before Divestiture. 5G is an environmental disaster. It's going to significantly increase carbon emissions and compromise any current targets for carbon neutrality. It's yet another we don't need that is bad for the environment on multiple fronts. I'm with you there. Windows 7 is my main OS, and I'll continue running it on hardware from around 2010 for a very long time. (Lots of it being recycled so I have ready access to it) You can do this if you don't want. I don't have a cell phone or any other low-quality, high environmental impact consumerist crap technologies. I only use landline phones (mostly Western Electric, which is the gold standard as far as phones go). I've got an early 2000s Canon point and shoot camera that works great. I've got everything I want and need, and it works better than all the crap that everyone else is taking on debt to buy. My PC and monitors are all 12 years old. I don't have a car yet, but when I get one, you can bet it won't be newer than 40 years old.

  26. I'm tired and depressed after yet another day of observing humanity's ineptitude and people's utter lack of concern for each other, so I won't go on much.... Re: EV vs. ICE: I don't know. I think maybe EVs ultimately aren't a terrible idea, but I agree wholeheartedly with many comments here that the available options leave much to be desired, create needless complications, and simply manufacturing them and their components (the plastics, the metals, and, most notably, the batteries) actually creates almost as much damage to the environment than driving around a 20+ year old gas/petrol powered car. I'm a little bit more positive about it, in that I don't think it's 100% about milking more money out of people, but I do believe that the current push, at least over here in California, USA, is severely misguided at best, because we have an old, outdated electric grid that isn't equipped to supply the kind of power output that several tens of millions of EVs would need, except perhaps in the major cities. What about all the people living in rural areas, though? Where I am now, every third car is an EV of some type, and those who own them have the money to not only buy the car, but to also upgrade their homes with a proper charging solution. Attempting to drive an EV in a mountainous rural area, while doable, isn't practical or financially sustainable by most; therefore, I don't think it's wise to force everyone to adopt them right now. In time, my hope is that the technology will improve, new methods of manufacturing will be invented that reduce the environmental impact, and the electric grid will be upgraded and rebuilt, but with all the political inertia and red tape, it's gonna take decades at best for all of these things to happen, and nobody seems to care. Hopefully when nuclear fusion power gets invented, things will improve. And now for electronics. Take cellular/mobile phones, for example. I like my iPhones, but it's gotten to a point now where every phone on the market is some kind of Apple (iOS) or Google (Android) based flat slab of glass or plastic with cameras galore. For years, I haven't really cared about the latest and greatest, preferring instead to use older phones, and to keep using them for longer than the average person might (we used TracFone (a US prepaid service) with a 2G phone until late 2013 or so, LONG after most everyone else I knew switched to an iPhone), because why upgrade if it still works? I mean, the main purpose is to I'd keep using my old Nokia 5190 or Motorola StarTAC indefinitely if I could, but as the 2G and 3G signals get shut down over here in the US, the situation is becoming increasingly bleak and depressing, because pretty soon, only brand new smartphones will work. The carriers all say they need to maximize capacity for the new hotness they call 5G, but I just don't buy it. 4G was plenty fast for my needs (I mean, even 3G is good enough for what I want to do; 2G is pushing it, but even that's still OK for the occasional email or something), so why do we need to keep making things faster? Did anybody actually ask for it? I didn't. And don't get me started on all this SaaS rentware garbage. And cryptographically locking down all aspects of the hardware architecture that rentware runs on is just wrong. I don't want to pay $1000 or more for a computer, only to be locked out by the manufacturer a year later when they decide to stop supplying OS updates because it's "too old". And when they inevitably say that the newer OS is safer, I cringe, because while there can be some genuine risks in high security settings, I feel that the average user need not care too much, as long as they practice good browsing habits and the software in question is updated enough to work with modern standards (I consider Windows XP to be the practical minimum here, with 7 being my preferred recommendation for those who aren't quite as technically minded, because XP requires a lot of hoop-jumping nowadays, whereas Windows 7, provided the hardware is compatible, still more or less works out of the box once updated a bit (and Spectre/Meltdown mitigations are disabled, because I think the danger of exploitation is mostly theoretical (and requires direct access to the hardware, if I'm remembering correctly), and thus in practice poses relatively little risk to the average home user). I developed a soft spot for Windows 8.1, because I could make it work and look mostly like 7 with some minor tweaks, but I avoid 10 like the plague because I don't like it. 11 is worse in this regard, and has rendered 100% of my hardware (some of which I've paid thousands of dollars for over the years) obsolete. Anyway, I guess I went on longer than I thought. Oh, well. Maybe someone, somewhere, sometime will invent a time machine that we can all use to go back in time to a point when the world as we know it seemed like a better place (for all its turmoil, I find that the bulk of the 20th century seems like a happier time than the 21st century has so far turned out to be (of course, looking back through modern history, few periods have been quite as thoroughly miserable as the past ten to twenty years have been). Sorry for rambling.... c

  27. I'm sure all of you are aware that Russia placed enormous amounts of war arsenal (and some say approx 125-150 thousands of cannon fodder too) extremely close to the European borders . Not to mention russian fleet in 240km of Ireland's shores , right above the data/internet cables for war "exercices". Why no one says anything about the catastrophic impact on the climate ? All of that efforts that @Mr.Scienceman2000and @Gansangriff were doing all these years (using old phones , saving the planet) are in vain. Anyone ? Silence ? And what about the poor animals killed ? Poor Irish fish ? No protests against near russian embassies ! Where is Greanpeace ?!?!? That's what I thought... Ever wondered why the "greens"(reds) only oppose UK/US and not Chino-Russia ? 28. Ok, i must admit, i don't read most of topic, just first page. Because i am politically incorrect i will say what most people does not dare: I AM ROOTING FOR GLOBAL WARMING. Here is short list of why i am such a heathen: 1) I like worm climate, i don't like cold European winters. Having Subtropics instead of continental climate is better. 2) I tired care about people from other countries who don't give a flying f*ck about me\my people\my country\my region. I stop care about you, since you don't care about me. 3) I am adult enough to realize that technical progress and Exhausting reserves of cheap carbon based fuels will eventually end mass burning of Oil, Methane and Coal. So, eventually problem will fix itself. 4) More warm means more vapor in atmosphere = more rain. Rain + Warm = better crop yield. Better harvest = less hunger and more profit for country budget. Remind me Climate change was suppose to be bad, not good, then why i love climate and economical benefits from it? Better live in subtropics then in continental climate, believe me. Using Nuclear stations and Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is despised by "ecologists" despite it is anti global warming measures that gives many countries energy independence. Why should i hate it - i endorse it - it is logical to do. Whole History Nuclear Stations accidents kill about several thousands people. Cars kill in USA alone every year about 30.000 people. Should i remind you that most of such ecologist who demand stop nuclear energy is goofy, to say the least? I also noted interesting discussion here that modern vehicles is unreliable because of planned obsolescence and cars from past was more reliable. Yes, driving or reliable cars deserve respect. There is also many used reliable cars as Mercedes W124 with 4 speed auto and inline-6 diesel. Or first GEN Lexus IS200\300. If you find them in good condition. But you still can buy new and reliable Mitsubishi Pajero, for example, it is one of the most reliable SUV in production. As well as find many other used reliable Japanese SUV. Most modern cars are intolerable garbage, but there is still several "Last of the Mohicans" on market.

When elections are coming they promise moon from sky but after election they forget all. Also political memory is short here. After someone does something actually bad it is forgotten in next election

  30. What is strange many think new products are better for climate and safer than keeping using old one. Nothing is user servicable today. Issue is beyond electrical devices. It even affects todays car industry. Many modern car for example you cannot even change battery. Car refuses start engine if old battery been drained to empty and/or removed to good charged one and need take it service to make it work again. Also modern car sensors causes lot of issues. I know few cases where brake by wire caused car car accident since brakes did not work. And peoples say buying new car is good for climate and safer than old ones... Back in day many peoples drove cars until it broke then fixed and kept driving. There was lot car mechanics to do stuff like replace drivetrain, change headgasket etc. Many properly cars made it until 400 000-500 000km before needed any big maintenance. Nowadays cars are designed last way less since "who drives car over 10 000km nowadays". Today car companies wants you buy new car instead or repairing old one. I dare to say 40 year old saab 900 turbo with 2.0l engine that been properly maintained is way better to climate than any modern car that is meant last few years at best since repairbility. If companies would make simple user repairable cars with manual transmission, no drive assistants, fusebox accessible under hood, normal gauge cluster without fancy displays, no computers and reliable but simple engine I would buy it but it seems nobody does.

  31. This will all end as usual , yet another tax or forced regulation on the shoulders of the Western European and/or Canadian , US , Australian and New Zealand customers/population. And we will pay for the whole planet , while the rest will pollute as usual , if not more . Why there's no discussion on what's going on with the waste in Asian countries or Russia, for example . Anyone ? ... silence ... Oh , excusez-moi , I forgot for a moment , nowadays it's just so "trendy" to bash the US and/or the West.

  32. The jury is out on whether we can even do anything to stop or change the path of the climate, however it is more important that we can agree that pollution of any sort is bad and we can always do more to cut down on that and make our environment better for each other. E-waste is primarily caused by many things, of which I can think, but these may be limited to the US. - manufacturers creating products with planned obsolescene and/or not following standards, resulting in short lifespans. - manufacturers using designs that are not publicly documented, or keep documentation behind paywalls or subscription plans. - manufacturers that replace whole parts (such as boards) instead of fixing or replacing individual components. - manufacturers that sue repair shops - trades (in general) not seen as important and not taught in schools, especially electronics Going back to the 1990s, there were repair shops all over the place. You could take you electronic gadget to get fixed and it was an actual fix and not just a PCB replacement. Or you could get the service manual and do the work yourself. Even to this day, if you buy some older electronic device, you can find the service manual online and be able to do a repair yourself. With new products, that isn't an option. As things changed, the removal of electronic repair shops, the disappearing of stores to buy components (although most can be found online), the ceasing of schools teaching trades like electronics/repair and likely the fact that costs have come way down on products has made it so people do not have the same attachment to something they once had. It is cheaper to just "buy a new one" instead of trying to find someone to repair it. Companies do replace products if they are under warranty, but they are doing wholesale changes and does not solve the e-waste issue. It is cheaper for a company to just replace a PCB and sell the "bad" one to a recycler than to spend time to diagnose and repair a problem. So in the current day, there is too few options for what to do with broken or unwanted electronics. Pay a recycler to take the thing? Put it out into the garbage? Throw it into the woods or the ocean? We had a ton of electronics years ago and didn't have this waste problem because the products lasted longer and they could be fixed. And fixing something was cheaper than buying a replacement, or cheap enough to make waiting for a repair a better option than buying a new one.
