  1. The impact a consumer makes is nothing to the manufacturer. Even if a person decides to not buy a certain type of car, or even if enough people decide, the industry could take years to adjust and stop manufacturing something. So the environmental impact from manufacturing is not something the consumer has any control over. And besides, the manufacturer already had made that car that is on the lot, the impact of its creation already occurred. And the one thing that the politicians do not take into account, when they make these laws (or want to or are trying to) regarding cars and the environment... such as changing of emission standard or saying that gas powered cars can't be made after 2030 or whatever, is the fact that we will just be replacing one environmental issue with another. Not having cars run on gasoline means that cars will run on electricity and that is the big push right now. We already know that creating electricity damages the environment no matter how it is produced although perhaps it could be argued that hydroelectric is the cleanest. Windmills and Solar have their own issues but they are different environmental issues than coal plants. Nuclear sounds great unless something goes wrong then we have to wait 10,000+ years because we haven't figured out how to properly handle the waste or deal with a meltdown except by covering it with concrete. And then there is the situation regarding the batteries which are created using rare earth minerals which are mined from the ground and cause damage not only to ecosystems but also pollute groundwater. So people seem to be tricked into just trading one pollution problem for another.

  2. WU is the way to go. The method greenhillmaniac provided is for manual updating and safekeeping of updates incase MS takes them down. I would say just use WU and dont install any from the repo, which is what i do everytime.

  3. Thanks for clarifying that. Apparently it doesn’t really matter which Server 2008 monthly rollup is installed then (so no point in quibbling about the meaning of “maxed out”), although there might perhaps be a minimum? I also wonder what version of .NET Framework 4.x you have installed (if any)? Installing versions that did not support Vista might be possible, but this thread has long since convinced me that it isn’t really a great idea.

  4. Idk what his issue is tbh but, in my case i have been using vista on maxed out updates (along with S2k8) and the kernel has worked fine at all times. Even for the newer version of the kernel i had the working WU client with sha-2 endpoints to provide me all the left out updates. All i can suggest to @winvispixp is get the WU client working from mdl and then see if it helps in anyway once all the updates are in order.

  5. I personally disagree with this sentiment. We are a like-minded community with a common interest. We are allowed to stray every once in a while, who freakin' cares, go off-topic AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE as far as I'm concerned. Within reason, of course, let's not throw politics in the mix, so to speak, but come on, who freakin' cares about so-called off-topic setting in once in a while! I actually sometimes feel like I'm talking to a Holy Roller thumping his Bible at me whenver somebody feels they have to proclaim such an "apology" for going "off-topic". But I digress... And, um, "apolgies for going off-topic"...

Glamrock, AC/DC, Ten Years After, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Undisputed Truth, E.L.P, Pink Floyd, D. Bowie, Eddie Harris, Level 42 ... Today? I don't know? Are there any ''earthy, groovy, funky'' Rockbands today? O.K. ''Leonid & Friends'' sounds fine, but it's some of a 60s/70s ''Cover-Band'' ... 13. Somewhat OT, but since you brought this up here... @burd , could you be a sport and do this Vista community some additional good? Please, go to Windows Update => Installed Updates => Sort by "Program" => Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 (x) and then make a list of ALL the updates your restored WU fetched and successfully installed for .NET FW 4.6 ? If possible, you can divide them chronologically into three groups : 1. Till Vista SP2's EOL 2. Till WS2008SP2's EOL 3. Currently installed ones under WS2008SP2 ESU (i.e. including those for Apr 2021) The produced list can then be used to easily fetch the same updates from MUC and update manually a Vista SP2 .NET FW 4.6.1 install ... Thanks in advance to anyone willing to undertake this! Best regards

  14. Ten years ago I would had said Deep Purple, but taste changes over time, and their studio albums are far below concert ones. However, "Made in Japan" is still the best concert album ever, and "Concerto for group and orchestra" outperforms every other Symphonic rock concert I've heard - a charm that only pioneers have, You listen and you KNOW it's not a calculated attempt to imitate others' works. I do not take the album with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals, as it's terrible Five years ago I would have said Enter Shikari, but their last two albums are ugh and I don't see area for improvement. First time I've heard them They said "We don't play easy music" and soon they turned into pop-ish sound. However, if you enjoy overdriven guitars, screams and a bit of eclectic, pretentious music (bit like early Pink Floyd or Emerson, Lake and Palmer, but heavier) and leftie lyrical approach, first four albums are still awesome. and their Warsaw concert from "Mindsweep" tour was the best club concert I've ever been to, period. Now I'd probably say Pink Floyd or Tides From Nebula. First, because I still consider Dark Side of The Moon best Studio Album Ever, and I think I didn't change my mind for 15 years or more. It. Just. Fits. Also rest of their work is, however imperfect, very varied, and still consists tons of gems and good tunes. tides Are probably best Polish band - not the one that becomes copy of some western classic, but with own distinct style, worldwide renown and performing well over the years. did I say their Warsaw concerto was the Second Best I've ever been to, and that they made best gig on 2018 Woodstock festival in Poland*, despite performing on smallest scene? Hear this beauty recorded on a brick and admire! or jump to govs-sponsored pro recording (might get geofenced). I might soon change my mind to Animals as Leaders, but First I need to consume more that 2 of their albums and hear them alive. Out of 'I'm ashamed to admit' kind of bands, probably Rymdreglage *Yep, it was renamed to Pol'adn'Rock due to some BS copyright reason, but everyone screws on that.

  15. Using win7 pro key works, tested on december. You just need to install without providing key and activate later via Control panel. Also, update from 7 or 8/8.1 via their service also works: https://thewincentral.com/free-upgrade-to-windows-10-from-windows-7-8-1-still-working-confirms-microsoft-employee-10037/

  16. Finally someone who understands how the environment really works. Moving to electric cars just moves the profits around. We really new *FEWER* cars. Better public transportation in urban areas. More walking and biking, much more. Going from two car to one car families is a good first step, and maybe people in urban areas can do without them altogether. I'm more of a rural person myself so I don't see myself not having one. But it certainly won't be an electric one. Not that I'm a fan of gasoline, but there wasn't much else 60 years ago. "Bright Green Lies" by Derrick Jensen is an eye opener into how environmentalism has been hijacked into a faux environmentalist movement. Electric cars and LED lighting, etc. has no place in an environmentalist movement.

  17. Things change over time, get really into a band and then later it dies down. Some have a couple great albums and some I could notice that I just like the one or two albums and not everything they made. Metallica fits into this category. Some bands where all of their albums are good but some are just "ok" and I do not care about some albums (as opposed to the Metallica example where some albums are terrible) and a band like this would be Yes or Laibach. But for a favorite band, it would have to be something where everything is good and not just what I have heard like King Crimson or Emerson Lake & Palmer or Giorgio Moroder. And for that title I'd have to say it would have to be Morbid Angel.

But from descriptions above KB898461 is not needed now since WU and AU is dead for XP.

  20. One OT post begets another, then another. The OP has half a dozen or more browser builds to support, but this is a good place to comment about religion? Fourteen pages down, 186 pages to go for Part 3.

  21. I had 4.7 before but WU wouldn't find updates so one would have to manually update from the ms catalog site which was quite annoying. I downgraded back to 4.6 just for the convenience of updating through WU, Yes .Net Framework from 2k8 is installable on vista but a bypass is needed which doesnt check for the ESU license to allow successful installation.

  22. Hello! I wanted to share all the steps that let me get rid of the 360 Extreme Explorer telemetry (Only tested in Version 9.5.0.138 of the Russian Repack). Hope this can help someone! 360 EE 9.5.0.138 (Russian Repack) - Downloads from: https://lrepacks.net/repaki-programm-dlya-interneta/182-360-extreme-explorer-amp-portable.html Steps to unpack the browser: - I ran the .cmd file that says something in russian and "portable". - When the process ended I opened the "360Chrome" folder and from there I did the following: A) Removed files (in /Chrome/Application/9.5.0.138) - newtab.zip - errorpage.zip (the first file connects to chinese stuff when it is opened and the second one is displayed in chinese and I do not like it). B) Changes to file "appstore.js" inside "options.zip" (in /Chrome/Application/9.5.0.138) I used 7zip (https://www.7-zip.org/) to open the .zip file, right clicked in the "appstore.js" file and selected "Edit". I removed the entries: "https://ext.chrome.360.cn/webstore/detail/", "https://ext.chrome.360.cn/tabextension/get_json" and "#appstorePage .network-error". The first two entries unable the browser from connecting to the chinese appstore everytime you enter the browser settings. The third one involves the removal of the "error page" in the "Adfilter" option (in browser settings) when the browser can not connect to the chinese appstore while entering the "Adfilter" option. The third entry is optional, I removed it because it displays stuff in chinese. C) Changes made to the file "Preferences" (in Chrome/User Data/Default) - I searched for the "accept_languages" entry and then modified the line "accept_languages": "ru-RU,ru,en-US,en" and replaced by "accept_languages": "en-US,en". This action allows to display websites in English and not in Russian. D) Changes made to the file "chrome.dll" (in /Chrome/Application/9.5.0.138) I used the "HxD Hex Editor" program (https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/). This section is only to replace stuff so the code for the execution of telemetry fails. All the removed stuff was replaced by dots (dot = 2E). - I Replaced all ".cn" entries with 3 dots and each one of the entries "360.", ".360", "101.", "106.", "123." and "210." with 4 dots. E) Changes made to inside browser preferences: 1) In "Basics": - I unchecked "Show recommend words". 2) In "UI style": I unchecked the following: - "Show copy paste helper" (This was displayed in chinese) . - "Always show search-box" (Optional). - "Always show status bar" (Optional). - "Enable intelligent URL (Recommended)" (chinese IP adresses appear when it is enabled). - "Enable url autocomplete" (chinese IP adresses appear when it is enabled). 3) In "Download": I unchecked the following: - "Use thunder p2sp download" (I don't know what it is). - "SaveImagesQuickly" (you can have it if you want). 4) In "Personal stuff": I unchecked the following: - "Prompt the user while saving password." - "Enable Autofill to fill out web forms in a single click." 5) In "Advanced": I unchecked the following: - "Enable speed optimizations" (I do not want it and do not know what kind of "optimization" will execute). - "Enable smooth scrolling" (I think it consumes a little more resources, you can leave it if you want). - "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly". - "Join user experience plan to help us improve our products". 6) In "Lab": I unchecked the following: - "Use Hardware acceleration when available". - "Enable The tab's audio muting function". - "IE kernal popup opens in a new tab". - "IE kernal enable data execution prevention(DEP)". I disabled them because I do not want them, you can have them if you want, but I do not know what the 3 last options do. F) Extensions added to the browser: - Ublock Origin. - I don't care about cookies. Finally I executed "360Loader.exe" and everything went fine! PD: In the steps there are things that others have already mentioned. I use the older version of this browser because it consumes less resources than the newer ones. Also, I don't know if with the further versions of this browser the telemetry becomes harder to remove.

  23. I suspect you may have too many Server 2008 updates. For whatever reason, win32 has not chosen to support the “January 2020” update level (which I assume is where greenhillmaniac’s repository stops). I would like to know what @burd says (since he has actually done it: I’m just an interested reader running Vista x86), but I think you should install only the Server 2008 updates pointed out by R3n. Edit: While I appreciate the reaction, burd’s next post convinces me that I was mistaken.

  24. YouTubers should generally take Google’s browser advice, which does not include any version of Internet Explorer (although IE 11 is still usable AFAIK): https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/175292?hl=en We had a thread about IE9’s inability to playYouTube videos in 2018/2019, and XP diehards did suggest installing Chrome Frame: https://msfn.org/board/topic/177749-ie9-doesnt-play-youtube-videos-anymore/?do=findComment&comment=1160023 Google ended support for Chrome Frame on February 25, 2014 and recommended uninstalling it. I believe it depended on FlashPlayer, which is now officially EOL (but there has been discussion in the XP forum about how to continue using it if one is truly determined). Those running Vista x64 with extended kernel can most easily satisfy YouTube’s requirements by using Chrome. Recent versions of Firefox require certain Windows 7 files to play h.264 videos, but win32 has also taken care of that with his mfplatsetup. Even for YouTubers running vanilla Vista or XP, better options than Internet Explorer are readily available (but will become more scarce whenever YouTube deprecates Polymer v1). Getting back to IE9, the most significant tweak that is possible is Enabling TLS 1.1/1.2 support in Vista’s Internet Explorer 9. You would get a lot less “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” errors if you implemented that, but you shouldn’t expect too much from this 10-year-old browser.

  25. Don't get me started on that one! I believe in personal accountability and you CAN RETIRE if you live your life properly! Don't buy a home that takes you thirty years to pay off (I paid off mine in THREE! - the bank pre-approved me for a $350,000 mortgage, I bought a $67,000 three-bedroom one-bath while driving a paid-off 18yr old car rusting out from under me). Don't live in vain so much so that you trade cars in every three to four years because you want to be seen in something "new". Don't buy a brand new vehicle and put yourself under a 6-year auto loan at the age of 62 then complain that you can't retire at 64 because Social Security won't pay for your auto loan and your 30-year mortgage. Don't complain at 64 that you "can't live off of Social Security" when you lived life in such a manner that you are still paying for a 30-year mortgage when you bought your house 50 years ago. Don't complain at 64 that the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment was 1.30% when the inflation rate is 1.25%. Or that two years before the COLA was 2.80% when the inflation rate was 2.49%. That is UPSIDE DOWN and WILL BE the reason why the NEXT GENERATION has no Social Security because you broke the bank.
