Below is my guide on how to convert some of the Chinese still present in 360Chrome. Also includes a few tweaks to reduce/eliminate privacy risks. I'll unfold the guide a little at a time over a few weekends or so and have inserted "placeholder" posts to keep them all at the top of the thread. I use the Russian Repack from here (version 13 build 2206) -- https://lrepacks.net/repaki-programm-dlya-interneta/182-360-extreme-explorer-amp-portable.html Run the "_Unpack Portable.cmd" and it will create a "360Chrome" folder - we will be modifying files inside that folder. You can always revert back to original by renaming folder and running "_Unpack Portable.cmd" again. Freebie software that you will need. Resource Hacker --- I prefer the portable ZIP at the bottom of here -- http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ PeaZip --- I prefer the 32bit Portable version from here -- https://peazip.github.io/peazip-portable.html Notepad++ --- I prefer portable version 6.8.8 but newer versions work just as well -- https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Notepad%2B%2B Portable/ Chrome PAK Customizer -- I use v2.0, grab the chrome-pak.7z from here -- https://github.com/myfreeer/chrome-pak-customizer/releases HxD Hex Editor --- I use version 2.4.0.0 from here -- https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/2 points

Speaking of that, has anyone seen MattKC's video where he deliberately tries to infect Windows 98 with viruses? He went into it expecting to get viruses immediately, but got more and more frustrated that he couldn't no matter what he did. Granted, Nostalgia Nerd was able to mess up Windows 10 with DOS-era viruses, 7,000 of them, ultimately. Though unlike MattKC he actually went and deliberately downloaded a huge bunch of "zoo viruses" rather than just trying to be a particularly careless about his Internet habits. Either way, it does show that there is an element of security through obscurity for the older OSes. I don't rely on that alone, of course, but I didn't give into the FUD when tech journalists heralded the impending "XP Zombie Apocalypse" in 2014 and I don't intend to do so now.2 points

Instead of making a long list of software that supports Windows 7, I'm making a list of software that doesn't work with Windows 7. There are four categories, the first is: Windows 10+ only, the second is: Windows 8+ only, the third is: Requires modification to work on Windows 7, and the fourth is: Unofficially works on Windows 7. There's likely plenty more software that isn't listed here, so let me know if any Windows 8+ only software gets any mods that lets it work on 7, or any new 8+ or only officially supports 8+ software comes out. Windows 10+ only: Games: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Death Stranding (DirectX 12 only, missing a few APIs, and has an OS block) Forza Horizon 4 (UWP) Horizon Zero Dawn (Same as Death Stranding, but has no OS block, or at least a older patch doesn't) Microsoft Flight Simulator Minecraft Bedrock (UWP) Sea of Thieves (Matchmaking backend comes from Microsoft Store) Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind Other: Facebook Messenger app iTunes Microsoft Office 2019 (Unofficially works on 8.x) NVIDIA Broadcast Oculus Setup/App Presonus StudioOne v5 (Might unofficially work on 7/8, but untested) Windows 8+ only: Game clients: EA Desktop Beta (Requires a 8.x dll, also, the installer has a block that blocks anything under 8.1, and application verifier does not work) Other: Kingston SSD Manager Requires modification to work on Windows 7: Games: Crysis Remastered (You should probably play this with DXVK. This happens without DXVK) Back 4 Blood Alpha (Requires xinput1_3.dll from C:\Windows\System32 to be copied into the same folder as the game .exe and renamed xinput1_4.dll) Mafia: Definitive Edition (Requires DXVK to run. More info here) Mafia II: Definitive Edition (Requires xinput1_3.dll from C:\Windows\System32 to be copied into the same folder as the game .exe and renamed xinput1_4.dll) Need For Speed Heat (Requires modifying the Origin launcher) Postal 4: No Regerts (Unreal Engine bug. It requires a fix that the developers of the game posted) Star Wars™: Squadrons (Same fix as Postal 4) System Shock Remastered (Same fix as Postal 4) Other: Discord (Intentionally breaks screenshare audio on anything below 10, fixed by using a browser or application verifier) Python 3.9.0 (https://msfn.org/board/topic/181979-another-program-drop-the-support-python-390/?tab=comments#comment-1189117) VMware Workstation 16 (Requires a custom installer and replacing vmware-vmx.exe) Unofficially works on Windows 7: Game clients: GOG Galaxy 2.0 (1.2 is superior and supports 7 officially) Games: Anthem Battlefield 4 (Says it requires Windows 8 on Steam, likely a mistake as Battlefield 3, 1, and V all officially support Windows 7. Though Windows 8.x is known to perform better than 7 in game, so that might be why) Boneworks Command & Conquer™ Remastered Collection Crusader Kings III Death end re;Quest 2 Destroy All Humans! (Minimum OS is listed as 10, but in additional notes, it says it supports Windows 7 and 8.1. These guys forgot what minimum requirements mean) Detroit: Become Human (Is a Vulkan game, but Windows 10?. People say it actually works better on 7 than on 10) Disintegration (Was patched to fix issues with Windows 7, but minimum requirements still say Windows 10) Doom 64 Empire of Sin Fall Guys Madden NFL 21 Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered Persona 4 Golden Phantasy Star Online 2 (According to Steam, it's DirectX 9.0c, but Windows 10+?) ReCore: Definitive Edition Rust (Game that used to support Windows XP, DirectX 9, DirectX 11, OpenGL, and Vulkan in early access, but now "requires" Windows 8.1 and only supports DirectX 11 and 12) State of Decay 2 Trials of Mana Watch Dogs: Legion Other: .NET Framework 4.8.1 Anki Audacity Blender 3 Calibre 6.0+ CorelDraw 2021 Cryptomator v1.6.x Dolphin v16393+ EA Desktop EasyBCD 2.4 Firefox latest Google Drive iTunes 12.11 iZotope RX 10 Kingston SSD Manager Kodi 21 Microsoft Teams Mindview 8 MKVToolNix 67 MotionController0669 Mozilla VPN MySQL MySQL Workbench 8 OBS OneDrive OneNote app OpenExpert Paintnet 5.0+ PCSX2 PerfectDisk Photoshop 2023 Presonus StudioOne v5 Process Monitor Python 3.9+ QMMP version 2 Rebelle 5 Steam TCPView 4.x x64 Ubisoft Connect Vidcoder 7 Visual Studio Code vmware player 16 VQProbe Windows Mixed Reality Xbox App Yuzu emu EA-2686+ ZBrush1 point

That's a good point, I didn't think about the possibility of someone making adapters for an ATX12VO power supply for pre-ATX12VO motherboards and equipment. I have no experience with electrical engineering, but I wonder what such an adapter would look like ... As for storage devices, I'm not certain, but I think that the motherboard will take responsibility for providing 5v power for the devices that need it. I guess you'd be hooking those devices up to the mobo for power rather than through the power supply.1 point

Good news is I finally solved the freezing issue by adding BANKEDSCAN to the deFlags member of PDEVICE. I'm not entirely sure what caused it, but I suspect it has to do with a string instruction in DIB_BitBlt triggering an endless loop of page faults when trying to copy between video memory banks, since both the source and destination addresses of a string instruction must be mapped at the same time. Anyway, adding a few flags causes the DIB engine to work around the issue. I might switch to using the graphics adapter's linear framebuffer mode in the future.1 point

That's really cool! As a solar power hobbyist, having things that run natively on 12 volt is a plus. Only thing im not sure about is how storage will be 12 volt only, most storage today uses 12 and 5 volt, or just 5 volt. Powering it wont be an issue, though... the modern PC provides a healthy amount of current capacity @5 volts through the USB ports. As for that, my absolute oldest AT psu (~1993) is in dire need of recapping, but the next oldest 2 (96 and 97) are still going strong. Both have been opened for cleaning, but no service has been performed and they dont need any. I think they'll make it the few years left to 30 without issue. and I do have other power supply units that are definitely older than 30 and still going strong. The ones in VCRs come to mind. But i sincerely doubt that AT/ATX PSU shortages will be much of a setback. There's always going to be converters to buck/boost your input whatever voltage to 3.3, 5, and 12 volts, (and even -5/-12, if you need those)1 point

Please update SHRestricted in shell32, you only renamed ordinal. but its incomplete. In 2k we have only HaveToShowWebViewBarricade webvw->shell321 point

An IQ Test is actually a test for the own ego. I've seen pupils' personality fold under a good result. They thought, they were something, but they actually are just high-trained products of their school system.1 point

It's sad to see legacy support dropped yet again for legacy hardware. Although I agree PC's older than 2005 are pretty slow, cutting them off will make it hard for those who can't afford new PCs...1 point

Because it's an up-to-date port, v. 13 corresponding to Chrome v. 86, that's why.1 point

Well, in my case I have found Windows XP Professional x64 Edition to be a mixture of good feelings and practicality. It is mostly used for work or projects, It takes a lot of effort and time to set things up to where it all works out properly; especially in special or rare setups. I simply much prefer it over newer versions of windows because it just fits my needs quite well. I am not a fan of some changes Micro$oft has made over the years to their newer Operating Systems such as Windows 10 involving privacy issues and other things. Though further into the practicality of such... I have found that Virtual Machines also help in keeping a comfortable compatibility layer; allowing you access to certain technologies or software. For instance if there was a need to use newer versions of programs to perform specific tasks for work or other scenarios that you are not able to perform on your current older Operating System. So, ultimately I would say there is a balance, and that depends upon the users overall needs of course and what they care about.1 point

Maybe, maybe not . He can test with these cards to see what happens. Real life scenario is a good test . I had some games that crashed with GTX980 and GTX780 (chip revision A2), strangely chip revison A1 worked alright. Have you considered modding the driver itself ? 382 seems to be a wise choice since it supports 1030.1 point

gtx 1060 is the culprit, replace it with original titan or gtx 780/980.1 point

I'm still trying to get this to work , a new barrier with screen resoulution auto config arose. Would you please suggest a good replacement for DisplayConfigGetDeviceInfo GetDisplayConfigBufferSizes QueryDisplayConfig And maybe something different for K32EnumProcessModulesEx , should not exceed the length. I'm sorry if I'm such a bother , thanks ! And these ones also , please. CoGetApartmentType RaiseFailFastException These ones also need to be replaced K32GetProcessMemoryInfo ResolveLocaleName SetThreadErrorMode1 point

Thanks, but psapi.EnumProcessModulesEx is longer and do not fit. EnumProcessModulesEx is absent in my kernel. The game doesn't start. TryAcquireSRWLockExclusive -> AcquireSRWLockExclusive - replaced successfuly.1 point

It seems my question was moved .... I also wanted to ask with what I can replace K32EnumProcessModulesEx ?1 point

It's about picking the right servers, where scripts should be allowed. addictive-ads.com spyonyou.info soundsfine.com soundslikeenglish.com soundslikespam.com a0a0202.cloudfront.com local-newspaper.com cdn-network.com Being presented with that kind of list, my users think: Now how do I have to decide? What is a "content delivery network"? I've read they offer me spyware! What is "Cloudfront"? The big numbers in front of it look like a hacker attacks me now! "Soundsfine.com", well that does sound fine, doesn't it? These quesitons are very dificult, I know. On a short-term, this configuration gives you headaches, having to configure NoScript for every site and look up every single thing, what it is and what it does. But on the long-term, once you have everything set up, browsing the web actually makes fun again. Of course some scripts are doing a fine job, like here on MSFN (from my point of view). It performs well on the old Pentium 3. It's true, that there are internet connections happening on a fresh Linux machine. Some distributions definetly do much more than giving you updates and syncing the time over the network. Especially if you look at what Ubuntu has done. The free software man Richard Stallman knows, why he points at them (https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/ubuntu-spyware.en.html). But other Linux distributions are different. My Salix installation doesn't say a word by itself to the outside world (after I've configured it)! It's like with Windows XP basically, although I don't think that you can configure a Windows XP machine on it's own to block all connections, that you didn't ask for. For example the Hosts-file is being circumvented for Microsoft servers (https://www.blabley.org/windows-10-ignoring-the-hosts-file-for-specific-name-resolution/). That's why I use a "hardware" non-Microsoft firewall, the configurable router, which has filters for these cases. But not all web connections are bad! The users would have to update their system by themselves, which they don't want, they just want to use their computer. It's convenience.1 point

Golden words , like . The only minor thing left , explain it to many others on here , that use yandex [!] , yes living in United Kingdom , for example , and yet using yandex . As for me , I just block tons of china-russia IPs with firewall. The same goes to google, yahoo , etc.1 point
