  1. Hi all, I've followed MSFN on and off for a few years as a lurker, but finally decided to join as I'm building my first bare-bones old-school Windows/DOS system and wanted to share the experience and get some tips too I'm hoping to build a dual-boot DOS/Win3.11 and Windows 98SE system. Let's see how it goes! Stay safe everyone Jasmin

  8. I don't THINK that they lock threads here so much. I know on a lot of places that necro-posting is frowned upon, but not so much here.

  9. If you use Bitdefender TrafficLight extension in your browser... After recent update of TrafficLight, you're NOT able to download from rthost.win - so add rthost.win to the EXCEPTIONS list in the Bitdefender TrafficLight pop-up window (click first on the gear button...) - like me. Thanks... EDIT: This download problem only occurs with the newest Bitdefender TrafficLight versions from addons.mozilla.org (I had the latest version 3.1.4), on Moebius browser (Serpent 55). With legacy version (Bitdefender TrafficLight for Firefox v. 0.2.4.1-signed.1-signed.xpi) from web.archive.org, I've NO problem.

  10. If one installs the ImTranslator Chrome extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/imtranslator-translator-d/noaijdpnepcgjemiklgfkcfbkokogabh then one can translate the inline Chinese (left-over) strings, so one can at least get an idea of what the settings are about: Not a permanent solution like the one detailed by @ArcticFoxie , but still, if you only want to , I guess it could be of great help...

  11. I don’t know of any Norton users here anyway (I use Avast Free 18.8), but it sounds like definition updates for the XP/Vista version (final revision 22.15.5.40) will end February 28 according to a recent thread at Norton Forums. Edit: Norton changed its mind?? I don’t know of any ESET users here either, but their support article Do you run ESET on Windows Vista or Windows 7? indicates that SHA-2 support will be mandatory by April 15, 2021. That is bad news for Windows XP, but of course it is well known here that SHA-2 support can be installed on Vista - but does ESET know that? Earlier today I posted a question at ESET Forums, ESET 12.x on Vista after April 15, 2021? which has received a couple of answers. ESET has no free version, but might still be an option for vanilla Vista with SHA-2 support.

  15. IMO games, not bloat, have driven the need for more powerful hardware, For a long time bigger software came with actual benefits. We didn't need giga- or tera- sized disk drives at one time, but then we didn't keep thousands of music tracks or videos or digital camera images with tens of megapixels. Now as of e.g., 2010 we can store those and play them in high fidelity. Ask yourself: What MORE can we do in 2020? We were told things like Virtual/Augmented Reality would become commonplace. Newsflash: It didn't happen. I'm observing specifically this in the last 10 years: With the hardware now twice as big, the OS has expanded to be even more than twice as bloated. Perhaps as much as four times. To the point where current hardware doesn't run the same software as well as the last generation. I was looking over some old data I had accumulated... I had made a spreadsheet from some testing. Back in 2015, Photoshop CC 2015 would start in 3.5 seconds on my WIndows 8.1 workstation. Now the latest Photoshop starts in 6 seconds on my much more powerful Windows 10 workstation. I thought that some of that may be the latest Photoshop getting less efficient, but even the older versions don't start as quickly as they did on lesser hardware. There is no excuse for this. We are not getting more reliable disk storage, nor better integration, nor a better computing experience. If anything, all of that has gotten worse. It's no wonder people pine for Windows 7. It got things done, even if less efficiently than XP. Earlier today I was trying to open a number of VNC windows to servers I need to manage, so that I could monitor them. The OS didn't provide features - and I haven't found a 3rd party add-on, so far - that would just allow me to open a group of VNC windows in the exact same locations and sizes they were in before. I have to write a custom script to do it, using an old tool that's been around since the 1990s. Where is the advancement? Even station-keeping would be fine; not regression! -Noel

  17. The old pre-CSS 3 internet looked good as it was is. It wasn't bloated, it loaded fast most of the time, it looked better than most sites do today, and CSS 2 was universal. Even some really old sites still look good to this day. Take a guess as to how old this is Here are some other archived websites that look better than their current versions https://web.archive.org/web/20120815002314/http://www.google.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20131021165347/https://www.imdb.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20120315092009/http://www.newegg.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20131020212801/http://reviews.cnet.com/android-kitkat/

  18. This mod takes the start button from the early Longhorn builds and puts it into Windows XP's explorer. The start button shown below is the only modification to explorer. Installation Instructions: 1. extract the archive containing replacer.cmd and the modded explorer 2. Locate the original explorer.exe in x:\Windows 3. Open replacer.cmd, drag said original explorer.exe into replacer.cmd, press enter 4. Drag the new explorer.exe file from the archive in (_XPmodded for x86 and XP_x64_modded for x64), press enter 5. Reboot and enjoy NOTE: Installing service packs (including uSP4) will probably undo this, take this into consideration when installing. Credits: Most go to DeviantArt user Rafax64, I used the bitmap from his modded explorer. This is also where replacer.exe came from.
