Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters, there is a key labelled "NonRemovableMedia", with a list of controllers and storage devices. Theoretically, you could add your HDD under the name it identifies as in device manager to that list. That is in 2003 x86, so it should also exist in XP x64.

As I've posted in a previous thread, it is possible to get Ryzen working on Vista, but drivers are kind of a pain to get working. Windows 7 USB3 drivers do work on Vista, but don't try and slipstream them, because they're not signed for NT 6.0. I would recommend first installing using a PS/2 keyboard and a DVD, if possible.

IIRC, all SATA ports have to support hot-plug. It is the driver that specifies whether it shows this way in Windows. You may be able to solve this by using the registry, however you would have to do some looking to determine the correct key to change. In this example: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci\Controller0\Channel0 you can add a TreatAsInternalPort entry. I put bold above to note that your hard drive may not be identified to this particular service. If it is not, then setting it on msahci will probably not make any difference. So then you'll have to find which service your drives are under. Without having a XP64 system to look at, I can tell you using Win7 as a reference. In device manager, find the section for IDE controllers, and inside should be your SATA controller. In the properties of that, under details tab, change the drop-down to service. That should be the name of the Service in the registry. Additional caveat: This may not work in XP64. New MSI file support is planned for the upcoming advanced fork.

It has always been the case with MSI files. It would be nice to have this feature but internally written in the MSI are the install instructions and internal files can be error checked. It depends on how the MSI install instructions checks the OS version, a temporary registry change may work. SuperOrca from Pantaray can look inside the installer and the install instructions could be altered. If a CAB file needs editing for example is difficult to edit the CRC check or know how to. If the program install is from an EXE that extracts the MSI then when the MSI has to be edited after extraction but many MSIs have reliance on an external executable to start and if this is the case then there will probably be CRC checks on the MSI itself. Why not install to a different OS and get the files and reg settings, if needed, from the other OS and see if the program works. Settlers 6 works this way and Acrobat 9, as examples only, must know also any new system files that are made. But as always, I do not want to get in the way of Jumper or other members answering your question.

It is with sadness I have to report my favourite Bit Torrent client of close to 6 years now, qBittorrent, has dropped Vista (and probably XP) support! What is your personal experience with the other choices?

Well, that's an early beta... menaing some two or three notches above vaporware, but not useful yet. If it ever reaches release, then we may consider trying it, but no way before that.

ScreenToGif 2.19.3 still works on Vista (Officially it needs .NET 4.6.1 and up plus Win7 and up). https://www.screentogif.com It's possible to run portable app as well as install MSI without any issues. Checked with .NET 4.8 installed.
