  1. An interesting little change I noticed in the April 2019 update rollup: For those that didn't notice, since 2009 with the release of SP2, Windows Vista's build number has been 6.0.6002 (while SP1 was build 6001, and RTM 6000). However, with the new rollup, Vista's build number has been changed to build 6.0.6003. At first I wondered if this was an error/discrepancy on MS's part, but turns out the change was intentional, according to this article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4495374/build-number-changing-to-6003-in-windows-server-2008 Just an interesting little thing I thought I'd point out This change doesn't seem to affect functionality of anything though (at least not that I'm aware of), which is good.

  2. It was to be expected that the MS will shut down the update system. So I've created my own update rollups (DEU and ENU) to circumvent this problem. Following a list of the updates that are included in my rollups.

  3. No, it doesn't. You should (could) have added "SAPI5". Some resources/lists: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2062625/microsoft-sam-sapi-alternatives http://www.zero2000.com/free-text-to-speech-natural-voices.html but there are not that many which are actually free AFAIK, a few may be free but for private use only, not commercial. The "new" ones by MS are here, Helen and ZiraPro for en-US: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27224 MSSpeech_TTS_en-US_Helen.msi MSSpeech_TTS_en-US_ZiraPro.msi Or you could try espeak: http://espeak.sourceforge.net/ (It has some SAPI5 voices) jaclaz

  4. Likewise, I've been using XP since roughly 2006, and I have no intention of giving it up any time soon. MS will have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

  5. PSExec v2.11 is not available at that link. Only the latest version. Worse, most of the Web pages I've found link back to the page you linked above. I did find v2.11 courtesy of the Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20151204023615/https://download.sysinternals.com/files/PSTools.zip Amazing - in less than a week, M$ has: Terminated Skype 7.36 (last XP-compatible version) Terminated Internet games for XP Released an Office 2010 "security" update that breaks Office 2010 compatibility with XP (admittedly not the first update that's done so, but I think it's the first "security" update that does) And in a couple of months, Windows Update will be shut down too. XP users are truly on our own now. I wasn't originally very worried about EoS, but m$ has gone way beyond just not supporting it any more - they're actively trying to sabotage it in any way possible. BTW, I suspect Win 7 users can look forward to the same "treatment" in just a few more months.

  6. Mi A3 will come so I guess you shall wait . You may consider looking at Xperia xa2 plus or getting a OnePlus 3t for dirt cheap price in sealed condition. I used mi a1 , xiomi phones are good at paper but not at reality . They are extremely unreliable , very high SAR value and stupid battery which blast like bomb (actually what happened with my A1) Lineage os is a excellent ROM . I use it daily with no google play services . As for apps I use fdroid app Store.

  7. They forgot to add "get the best spyware and other crappy features that you don't need built right in that can't be removed"

  8. Thanks @Vistapocalypse (and others) for contributing to and keeping this topic alive while I've been away! Finally got around to updating it, so I reckon it's about time I post one of these (albeit, short): SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR APRIL 13, 2019: Updated status of Skype v7.36.x: this version no longer works on XP/Vista as of April 2019, meaning that XP/Vista users effectively can no longer use Skype (desktop). Added MediaPortal to "DVR/PVR software" section.

  9. Sure, the Windows 9x series (and Me) was targeted to final users/home users, it was far easier to install/setup it was (on same hardware of the time) definitely faster or if you prefer requiring less resources, it was simple, it could run games, etc. NT on the other hand (remember that plug 'n play was introduced only several years later with Windows 2000) was tough to install/configure, it was less "widely compatible" with different hardware, drivers were made only for much more expensive cards, or motherboards, etc., etc., the storage subsystem was typically SCSI (much more expensive) and thus it was only aimed at the professionals/businesses. Up to Windows 2000 they were simply two completely separated "channels", business and home, each with the OS with the features that were more suitable for the intended use. XP broke this separation, by imposing to the pro's unneeded bells and whistles and by imposing to the common users senseless restrictions and or "features" that made (and still make in later NT versions) no sense whatsoever. jaclaz

  10. I have no intention whatsoever to ditch XP so soon. It serves all my needs nicely. I have been using it since july 2010 ( after my pc running win2k pro went kaput ) . In 2011, I got another pc win7 pro but I hardly use it. Actually my trouble and strife does but believe it or not she prefers my xp . I would like to thank you all for your invaluable contribution and help.

  11. I will continue daily running XP (mostly x64 edition to be precise) for the foreseeable future. Eventually one day I will need to move, though.

  15. As long as this Thinkpad X61 serves me well, I will continue using XP. How is a notebook's normal lifetime?
