This is wrong, Geforce 8 cards don't work under 9x. That post you quote is from 2007 and at that time it was briefly believed they did because those who did the unofficial driver added them to the inf files (but without actually testing any). Nobody ever reported success running any since then.

Environment variables are stored in the registry in Windows ME, so yes, but apart from that , nope. It should make no difference for a program however where Windows stores these variables. I see on the Web people reporting problems with trying to register old versions of Tracktion.

I've set userprofile and others as environment variables pointing to my application data folder long ago. What applications have you got problem with?

I downloaded this on my tablet, I'll be checking out if this can work on my Windows ME system tomorrow as I've only partial read support for this format on that system and none for encoding. I can read some flavors of it in XnView via a susie plugin and an old version of Image Magick and others with Gpac, and yet some other with nothing. BTW, with regards to png decoding, compression levels have to to do with file size vs speed not quality, png is always lossless. Heic, avif and jxl beat old formats quite massively with regards to filesize for identical quality but are all damn slow, about 100x slower to decode in a few tests I made, so nothing I am going to adopt for my own use, especially as storage space is not issue anymore these days. Nice to have decoding options for these formats though.

Go in folder options, filetypes tab, find folders entry, select it and click on the "Advanced" button. Set explore as default action.

If you want a folder to open like when you run explorer, showing the tree view, then, as I've said above, you need to change the default action for opening folders from Open to Explore.

Open a folder, set it how you want it to be, then go in folder options through the menu of that opened folder and click on the button that says something like: "View all folders like this one". If this does not work, and it probably doesn't, then you can change, in the registry, the default action when double clicking on a folder from Open to Explore. Doing this however will likely not let you browse in place anymore but instead will open a new window for each folder you open within a folder.
