  1. Oh well it wouldnt have been necessary to open my best browser for w98se Thread if i saw this one before, damn. Well i think Firefox 52.0 is the best way to go since most up2date. But this youtube-dl.. hmm dont know i would be very afraid of getting in legal trouble since its not clear if u are allowed to Download vids from YT. I just imagine how the trial in court would commence "your honor, the defendant needed to download the youtube video with this program because he have windows 98se installed and he cannot watch it otherwise on his netbook" 🤣 Judge "oh we understand. I think then this case is clear. Does the prosecution has any arguments?" prosecution "nothing to add" Hand down the verdict, not guilty 🤣
  2. why, yes - this driver i tested. but u know you dont really need the .inf file. my workaround was like this for the too big inf: install incompatibe old rtl8136 driver for 8103E. then replace rtenic.sys in c:\windows\system32\drivers. this driver only contains the rtenic.sys to be honest. the only 2 relevant files are the rtenic.sys and the inf file for setting registry settings, and the settings - i compared the two inf files the old and the new one - are basically the same thing. but we end up the same problem i just pointed out with tcpip producing protection error, unfortunaley.
  3. Darn, mine is the 8105E and there the helping rope seem to end. I google'd and tried to exhaust all possibilities of finding an suiteable driver, but no luck. i tried soo many releases. two results: protection error or yellow mark, nothing in between. Only ndis2 does the job. I gotta think is it possible to make the rtl8105e driver for w2k compatible with w98? I mean there must be a clear reason why it crashes as soon as a Network protocol is have a binding to the driver. In the bootlog the network driver is said that it would have loaded successfully so what is the reason, why the protection error? I really wanna know. And additionally, would it behave differently on winme? Because it have a newer network Stack. But i use w98 with the inofficial SP3 so.. maybe the stack i already on winme level but i simply dont know. Is there any way besides bootlog how i can check what this driver does or why i Encounter the protection error? One thing i need to point your Attention to is the strange behaviour of Windows 98 here. First boot protection error. Second boot it works but asd.exe says tcpip has been disabled. So apparently windows is detecting something, so it decides to make use of asd functionality and disable tcpip. now i have no idea what asd really does and how it really works. Maybe there is an possible lead.
  4. It is the 128MB version. In the meantime i installed DirectX 9.0c, no change (but i really didnt expected any changes because i only installed a runtime). Fullscreen does work but Video and sound stutters. I guess we really reached the end of the capabilities here since my assumption is that new drivers would prove the same effect. Its Firefox on this os that is indeed too much. I mean w98 can only handle 1GB ram at max. So what Happens if u try to open YouTube on w10? If i Open only few small tabs normal sites we already consume 200-300MB. YouTube the utilization of ram is increasing. So im ready to accept that this might be the best that is possible.
  5. so i just did. i downloaded firefox 52.8, followed all steps deliberately with all the DLLs, kextensions and whatelse not. but, guess what. @awkduckseems to be a very clever duck indeed, since he or she was right! youtube indeed *does* work with firefox 52.8 in this situation. maybe work is not the right word for it, it tries to do its work, almost. well what happens if i try to open youtube.com? it loads like forever, than it draws correctly. fascinating sight to see, youtube.com in 2023 on a windows98se, still wonderous and marvelous! the best experience you could probably get with firefox 52.8 on w98se is disabling all cache, disable hardware acc (at my case with vbem), disable all site prefetching in about:config and such. then you use google to search a certain video and strangely enough it never can remember any of your cookie settings and you get more advertisements thrown at than on any other device and it is slow. but.. it works! you even see the video and even with vbem in acceptable speed. artifacts happen thou, but most of the time the video works quite well. and if u wait long enough rest of the youtube page is loading as well, it only takes a lot of time till everything is ready. i guess it has to do with only having one core able to work with in w98se and few extensions of cpu may not be used correctly? that i would just assume. all over all, you *can* watch videos with it. Btw i'm using the hdatsr from 16-bit. with this it wont play sound in youtube. however, with my usb headset sound from youtube works without any problems. fullscreen is impossible thou because of vbem or the firefox incompatibility with windows or disabled hardware acceleration. anyways, it is interesting how far we have come with this never expected it to reach that deep into the depths of modern web.
  6. well thank you for your help, its amazing! it works prettty well, now even the volume slider of waveout is working! i'm very glad to found this application, wouldnt know any other way to get sound working with intel hd codec in windows 98se. can only recommend it, this hdatsr app and ofc this board! =D
  7. very well i will try firefox 52. but currently i use the hdalaudio driver that works with hdatsr. so basically im not sure if that would work. the thing is, i could easily plug in some usb speakers or my usb headset. for that i already know safe that it works without any trouble. since im using a much newer machine from 2014 with windows 98se i have an intel core i7 with 512MB useable RAM (originally 8GB). most of the instructions should work for the cpu, at least i hope. the vbem driver is active as you already know, but for the intel hd graphics (not the second nvidia card that is integrated too). is there anything i need to check on to run firefox 52? not sure if there are special dependencies kernelex based or anything
  8. Oh my god, it worked! PcipatchB=$7900 did the trick! At first it clicked very loud. Then the windows 98 boot sound came but a bit too extreme loud 😅 it was a bit crackling thou. Btw no hdaicout.hda used, only the ini with pcipatchB. Still i wonder why it doesnt write an hdaicin.txt file without hdaicout.hda With the hdaicout.hda without any other changes besides the change in the ini file, still no sound. That was the try without removing anything. But removing everything besides beginning with $0 is leaving not much over. And still doesnt really work. I added a zip file with the hdaicout.hda in the specific condition plus the hdaicin.txt. Hdaicout-data.zip
  9. Well i installed hdatsr as the instructions said. * copied hdatsr.exe, hda2.dll and waveout.exe to c:\windows, added to autoexec.bat * added entry to system.ini with wavehda=hda2.dll under [drivers] * installed via hardware detection assistant the oemsetup.inf file, hda2 device appears in sound settings * copied one of the hdaicout.hda files to c:\windows tried few of the hdaicout.hda files in this topic, still didnt worked. no clicking, no sound. then i got curious and looked into the hdatsr.ini. hdatsr seems toi have found *two* hd audio adapters, which could be right since this notebook have indeed two graphic cards (nvidia and intel integrated). i attached the hdatsr.ini, hdaicin.txt and hdaicout.hda i used. maybe someone have a idea what to do. i mean the hdaicin.txt isnt really empty. the settings of the audio hda device in windows 98 shows the screen with the DMA Address, but other than that i'm a bit of a loss here.. the hdarun if i try to let it show to me the addresses show me some. but i dont really know what to do with it, since i dont think that the entries would differ much of that which is in the hdaicout or hdacfg.ini.. so im not sure what to do now ^^ HDAcfg.ini HDAICIN.TXT Hdaicout.hda
  10. that makes most sense to me. i can remember very good the mpeg and avi files from the windows 95 cdrom where you could play the infamous "goodtime" and "weezer" video. but the graphic cards at this time around on '99 was an ATI Rage II Pro. I couldn't image that this 2MB Video RAM thing had any 3d acceleration (or does it?). this Video for Windows as it was called was able to play videos even in windows 3.11 where i'm very sure there wouldnt have been any acceleration drivers (maybe explicit vesa driver in config.sys, but that would be a stretch or the scitech display doctor). okay so the missing codecs might be the problem. and i dont think there are any ports to more recent browsers out for w9x (guess seamonkey is not that up-2-date for windows 9x). and its doubtful if there are any codec ported to w9x, since mplayer wouldnt be able too to do it. the illegal way of having youtube fun is of course out of question for me. at the end i guess its not really possible to watch youtube on windows98se, at least without actual browser or codecs. maybe time will show new hopeful ports of some modern browser to windows 9x with the needed codecs.
  11. Hello guys, i tried a few browsers on windows 98se, the ones i tried were: Internet Explorer 6.01 (lol, not really much of an experience, more the feeling of good ol nostalgia) K-Meleon 74 (works acceptable, but don't even think about open URL youtube.com.. :D) Opera 12 (same range as K-Meleon, besides less actual) RetroZilla (okay, fast, but not much support for newer sites) well, since these seem already like good choices i srsly wonder about if you were ever able to use youtube or any other services (reddit, etc.) with windows98se. the idea of own apps written for such services is somewhat interesting. but it seems to me a bit of development work (but not impossible thou). secondly, videos i think might be impossible with vbem driver.. but, to get back to general question: which browser would you favorize for windows 98se? maybe there are options i didnt know till now.
  12. thank you very much! it worked just fine now. what i did wrong is 1. i used the old realtek pci driver from 2008 which is not compatible with pcie device 2. i i tried to use it with device=c:\windows\rtend.dos, which is the *wrong* way. never use the dos file in config.sys when you're trying to install ndis2 in windows, it will fail at bootup and u will wonder why. instead - add it in windows with the hardware installation wizard and then you are all set. the odd thingy is, that my network status tool only showing 10 Mbps which is.. not very much, if you think that this card is able to get 100Mbps. oh or im not sure. probably it means the Mega*bytes* per Second not Mega*Bit*, which would make more sense.. but to summarize it up: lesson learned, now i know how to install ndis2 drivers in windows 98 who knows, maybe someday besides my good ideapad notebook i need this knowledge again ^^
  13. oh damn, windows 10 is starting to become an "legacy OS". can't wait till some people talk about how we can run "this old windows 10 apps" and what hardware is possibly compatible with the windows 10. "no, not this CPU, it is way too new. windows 10 can't handle its reduced feature set that windows 11 is using more performantly" or something like that
  14. i try to keep it short, so its easier to read: I installed W98SE on a "modern" Notebook, Ideapad Z570, Intel Core i7, 8GB DDR3 RAM, SSD. Works so far, no bigger problems. The Notebook have an RTL8136 NIC with Rev05. First thing i tried is the old driver for w98/me. installed, but doesn't work with yellow exclamation "device is not working correctly". then i tried the driver of windows 2000 or to be more precise, changed the .sys file in c:\windows\system with the one of the windows 2000. no yellow exclamation mark, but protection error when tcp/ip is added as protocol. so no real option here either. then i tried to use RTL8136 NDIS2 driver from realtek.com.tw. loaded rtlend.dos (weirdly enough, i never found any rtgnd.dos which was mentioned in one thread here) , added to config.sys with device=c:\windows\rtlend.dos - but it gives back the "internal error" message. i'm at a complete loss now. i can understand that some older driver can't put it up with the rev05, since the inf is only going till rev03. but the ndis2 is more recent, in fact the last one was from 2014 i got. but that still ddin't worked out so.. did i miss something here? maybe some of u guys have an idea ^^ i mean it would be so nice to get any logfile information of the ndis-driver or just some possible lead what the problem may be. i mean, could it be RAM? i mean large memory is always a problem for old windows versions, maybe this is the real "internal error" it is proclaiming? i dunno.. only few thoughts..
