  1. Win98fe also has a fast shutdown bug that Windows can't soft power off itself when fast shutdown is disabled on an acpi-based pc. This is due to an incomplete support in its acpi driver windows\system\acpi.sys. Just replace this file with the one in 98se (build 2170 or higher) to fix this bug.
  2. In win98se, if you enable fast shutdown (change the data of the registry value FastReboot in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\currentControlSet\Control\Shutdown to 1, or uncheck Disable Fast Shutdown in msconfig advanced options), your pc will restart when you turn if off normally. M$ released a patch called Windows 98 SE Shutdown Supplement to fix this bug. But in fact, this patch doesn't fix the bug, only updates some drivers related to battery and power management, and hides the Disable Fast Shutdown option in msconfig by replacing msconfig to a newer version. if you set the above registry value data to 1 after installing this patch, you will find that Windows still restarts when you turn off your pc. In my observation, the reason why this bug still exists when this patch is installed is that the fast shutdown bug is in the file reboot.vxd, which is integrated to vmm32.vxd when the first time win9x starts during Setup. And none of the win9x updates (including security updates, non-security updates, and hotfixes) update this file until their eol. So just replace 98se's reboot.vxd with the one in 98fe rtm, the fast shutdown bug in 98se is fixed. Additionally, the first updated reboot.vxd (version number > 4.10.1998) is in the build 2150 (98se beta2). from this version of reboot.vxd, the fast shutdown bug introduced. the version number of this file in the previous builds of 98se beta is 4.10.1998, actually it's the same file as the one in 98fe rtm.
  3. WinMe's system restore has a bug that the restore operation will fail if you choose a restore point created after 2001/9/9 1:46:39 utc, because the interval of this time point and the beginning of the 32-bit unix time_t time point (1970/1/1 0:00:00 utc) is 999999999 seconds, which is the maximum 9-digit number. If the seconds of this time interval get to a 10-digit number, the bug occurs. The bug is in the smgr.dll file. To fix this bug, M$ released a critical update q290700. It updates this file to the version 4.90.0.3003. But the updated smgr.dll still has a y2038 bug. If there is a restore point created after the end of the time point of the unix 32-bit time_t (2038/1/19 3:14:07 utc - which is the beginning time point of the y2038 bug), the system restore program even can't start - causes an illegal operation!
  4. Windows Me and higher versions can't open WU v3. It returns a 404 page.
  5. Does anyone have Windows 98/ME Unofficial SP Chinese Simplified versions? Windows 98/Me has many buggy errors especially on new PCs later than 2005.
  6. I have 2 new laptops bought within 3 years. One is HP 850 G7 i7 10510u/16G/512G/Win11 22621, another is HP 战66锐龙版 r7 5800u/32G/1T/Win11 22621. When I run some old apps, such as 联想电脑学校, they cause CPU usage very high and the whole OS very slow. It's difficult to do other operations while these apps run. Listening to songs is also affected. These apps are made for Win9x. But even when running them in a Win9x VM, they also cause CPU usage very high (almost 100%) and their MIDI BGM sounds terrible - playing with stuck. Also, other operations in this VM are also with difficulty. Finally, I have to run them in a WinXP/Server 2003 VM with at least 4 CPU cores to decrease the CPU usage to <50% to lighten this problem. But it still makes me uncomfortable. [Moderator's note: 联想电脑学校 is Lenovo Computer School.]
  7. By the way, WU v4 is still not available on windowsupdaterestored.com
  8. WinMe's DOS8.0 doesn't allow emm386 to be loaded. if you run emm386.exe (in WinMe's Windows folder), DOS8.0 will be shut down unexpectedly. But some DOS apps require emm386(for example, SPDOS 6.0 Chinese System, which is required by WPS3.0). Does anyone have solutions?
  9. Millennium are all misspelled as Millenium and on a newly installed me vm, v4 found .net framework 1.1 but it isn't installed after download finished
  10. There is an unofficial USB driver for NT4 from dell, which supports USB2.0 on a real PC (not a virtual PC). I tested it on a fujitsu p5010 laptop (i855 chipset). The speed of my 2 USB disks, Kingston DT101 16G and ADATA USB3.0 16G, can be up to 27MB/s. but I can't find any USB2.0 drivers for win95 osr2.
  11. ah??? then, did the official v3 site support chinese? if not, that's a pity! because mainstream support for win95 ended dec 31 2000 and for win98 ended jun 30 2002, which meant most non-security updates and hotfixes for 95/98 chinese versions were not available even at that time. when i try to check for updates for win me & 98se, using v4 site, it returns an error page in a few seconds.
  12. hello everyone! i'm a china user. yesterday i tried to have Windows Update v3 check my win98 and win95 updates, but it froze at the dialog box "正在检查可用的更新程序..." and no results returned after several hours. i want to collect winme's updates, but when i access Windows Update v3, it gives me a 404 error page. another question is , when could Windows Update v4 be restored? that's the first Windows Update website i used.
