My Browser Builds (Part 4)

@roytam1 : This week, upstream have merged some additional "aspects" of UXP#2346 ; since we've kept EME in our tree, am I right to assume those upstream commits should be exempted from merging?

FWIW, some few sites do still use ClearKey (soft) encryption, also part of EME; some other sites delivering both Clear and DRM'd media content would not load at all if they sniff out the browser doesn't support EME/DRM; so, even if used solely as an indication of "sites-requiring-Widevine", I still feel keeping the (mostly broken) DRM implementation in Serpent 52 is a "good" thing...

Also, UXP#2281 is being pushed; will that impact buildability/NT<6.1 compatibility for "you"?

Thanks for your stupendous efforts :worship: ...

those are not going to be merged.

Is it possible to cherry pick commits using the web browser version of GitHub? Partially OT: Test: The Arctic-Fox developer has used Mozilla code changes that switch pointer references (namely nsAutoPtr references) into UniquePtr references. I couldn't get UniquePtr to work in Visual C++ 2008, so want to know if it is possible to revert those commits? I finally found the "Squash and Merge" function on GitHub, which means a lot to me because when I add support for Visual C++ 2008 in "KM75-gecko31-engine", Visual C++ 2010 support in "Arctic-Fox-fix-winbuild", and "palemoon27-classic" it would be easy to add just a couple of files per commit, which could mean in range of 100 commits. There have been many times I have wanted to upload incremental changes to GitHub, but was too scared to because I don't want hundreds of commits when I can have a few dozen larger commits. It would get some use if my dev machine was online... Also, I do not believe I'm leaving GitHub!

please also test build 20231014 and 20231021

I tried 2023.10.12 today and it too works fine. So that narrows the issue down to one of the last two versions.

I'll try the remaining version as time permits.

QT Player v7.7.9 (file version 7.79.80.95) for Windows is the last one Apple released for installation under Vista SP2/Windows 7 SP1

I tried to install QT 7.7.9 on my Win 7 SP1 system, but for some reason it won't install!

The prerequisite apps, Apple Application Support and Apple Software Update, both install (even if I uncheck the box to install the latter ) without problems. But installation of QuickTime itself always fails. The installer dialog just says "The installer encountered errors before the requested operations for QuickTime 7 could be completed." Not very helpful at all. Even unpacking the .exe and trying to install QuickTime.msi directly encounters the same problem.

Running msiexec /i QuickTime.msi /l* QuickTime.log gives a bit more info. I get the same failure, but see the following in the log file:

Action 21:32:25: CheckAndGrantAccessToRegistryKeys. Verifying registry key security
Action start 21:32:25: CheckAndGrantAccessToRegistryKeys.

So apparently there's something funky about my registry. Of course it doesn't tell me which registry key(s) it's having trouble accessing.

Oh, well, I don't really need it; I just wanted to try to help @luweitest....

I normally don't do merging in web front-end so I can't say anything about it. and as I said in https://github.com/rmottola/Arctic-Fox/issues/163#issuecomment-1784526983 I have to test with my own changes in arcticfox, and manually generating diffs/changesets patch files to apply them to my trees.

if you want to revert any part of them, you may need to do similar things like what I did, and reversely applying them for a revert.

FWIW it looks like Microsoft did away with the previous usable Hotmail format so now the default string in 52.0 and 55.0 will take you to the bare minimum format similar to gmail's. Changing the string in about:config to Firefox's most recent will render their newer buggy version so that's the choice.

security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy

Thank you. I missed lots of post. Toggling the value does solve the problem. Reading https://kb.mozillazine.org/Security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy makes me think it must be stricter than it claimed, since all files are in the same directory as IPAlab.html.  Apart from this one, I find toggling security.fileuri.unique_origin also has the same effect. What is (or should be) the difference?

That was my gut feeling, thanks for the confirmation :) ...

The first, older, pref "security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy" was inherited by UXP from Mozilla ESR 52; the second one you cited, "security.fileuri.unique_origin" is a newer one, implemented by MCP in 2019:

https://repo.palemoon.org/MoonchildProductions/UXP/commit/33b6f178d16f94df7de98d1316f563f14a2bedd5

with a clarifying comment written in:

https://repo.palemoon.org/MoonchildProductions/UXP/commit/408ca49a029efa54d18234288c04944d2905fecb

The original PR#1196 that implemented this pref has, apparently, been lost now, amidst their migration from GitHub to Gitea :dubbio:... It is my conviction that MCP tried to replicate Bugzilla #1500453->#1558299 of that same period, although Mozilla chose a different name ("privacy.file_unique_origin") for the pref:

https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/2ad059cc9e78

That Bugzilla entry aimed to patch CVE-2019-11730 , but the default pref value there was "privacy.file.unique_origin;false", whereas in UXP it's "security.fileuri.unique_origin;true"; I'm not an expert on security, nor a coder, so can't advise you which of the two UXP "security.fileuri.*" prefs to toggle for your use case; from the Pale Moon v28.6.1 Release Notes:

Quote

- Changed the behavior of file: URIs to treat each URI as a unique origin. This prevents cross-file access from scripting.
- A preference (security.fileuri.unique_origin) was added to allow users to relax this restriction if required for their environment.

so I tend to think toggling only that newer, second, one might be preferable; toggling any of the two (permanently) lowers your browser security; a Mozilla expert advises to create a separate browser profile exclusively for such use cases ; in conclusion, Mozilla have removed "privacy.file.unique_origin" in Fx95+ and "security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy" is also to be axed (if not already); another case of them "foolproofing" their browser, in their effort to save their users from self-harm ...
