March 10, 200917 yr One more office suite:LAST-FREE-SoftMaker Office 2006 http://www.softmakeroffice.com/ Says it supports 9x; 2008 ostensibly supports Win2k or later. Free download of old commercial release. Haven't tested either on 9x; 2006 is good on Vista.Only Word and Excel files are supported so it's not a complete suite. But very nice find anyway. Works very well (doesn't like Uberskin but cleartype is ok) and is much faster and smaller than OpenOffice. Registration required (free) to get rid of the nag screen on opening. Thanks galahs.GreenBrowser seems to handle multiple tabs a little better than Maxthon classic on my 200MHz Pentium. Opera still does tabs better than any, though.A lot of features didn't work in Fresh Diagnose, though that may be an incompatibility with my motherboard and not Win98. April 23, 200917 yr LAST - FREE - XXCOPY FREEWARE v.2.96.5 - http://www.xxcopy.com/download/xxfw2965.zipLater versions (v. 2.97.0 and higher) do not work with Win 98SE. At installation, you get this message:"current copy of the executable was launched from <blank>"."recommend that xxcopy be stored in following directory: \".If you proceed, it claims to install and running it from a DOS box, "xxcopy /?" works. But, if you try "xxcopy f:\whatnot c:\whatever\whatnot" or any other copy command, it just gives the error message "invalid source directory". Now, v. 2.97.0 is the first to support UNICODE filenames. AFAIK, support to UNICODE filenames results in incompatibility with Win 9x/ME. This also happened to WinHex when UNICODE filename support was added...

April 30, 200917 yr Alcohol 120% v1.9.5.3105, of 5-Jul-2005, is the last and best build for Win98. The Win98/ME version is offered for sale as a separate download at http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alc...ws_98___ME_only Their homepage is http://www.alcohol-soft.comAlcohol is a must-have software, the best of its kind. Its main use is for handling a library of .iso etc image files. I have images of all my CDs and DVDs on two 1TB HDDs (one is as an identical backup), it's much easier to make a backup copy of a HDD than of 500 physical CDs/DVDs, and CDs/DVDs are just pieces of plastic which disintegrate after a couple of years.Alcohol can handle regular and copy-protected CDs/DVDs and their images. I have set up 2 virtual drives V: and W: so that I can make a binary compare of the content of 2 mounted image files with Beyond Compare (e.g. are 2 eMule downloads, one a .iso file, the other a .nrg file, identical?) With Alcohol one can install software from mounted CD/DVD images (careful, 4GB filesize limit under FAT32), both copy-protected and normal. Again: highly recommended. May 1, 200917 yr Quick View Plus v9.0.0 (of 30-Sep-2006, now by Avantstar, v8 of 21-Nov-2003 was by Stellent) seems to run fine under Win98SE, even if its readme.doc says: "for Microsoft® Windows® XP and Windows 2000. System Requirements: Quick View Plus 9 requires Windows 2000 or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed."Quick View Plus is a classic, but not free. Unfortunately this v9.0 is hard to find, they only sell v10 at their website http://www.avantstar.com/Products/Quick_Vi...iewPlusOverviewI haven't tried all the file types which v9.0 can open, did anybody experience problems with v9.0 under Win98SE?
