I'm wondering if the method of deploying matters. For my test, I had deployed a Windows 7 x64 image with Imagex to a single partition. I can also try using DISM with a System Reserved partition. All my Vista images are archived now and I'm actually using Diskpart from Windows 8. I figured that it would probably be better to attempt to convert the file system prior to booting into Windows for the first time, which is why I did not want to consider doing a manual install from DVD.

I only have Partition Magic 8 (DOS) here, and it does not give me an option to convert. It may be because it detects error 105: Partition starts on wrong boundary. I had decided to deploy Windows to NTFS then boot Partition Magic before booting Windows. If there is any other tool I should try, let me know.

First, maybe it should be determined how you would get the OS onto that kind of volume. I just tried to deploy Windows 7 x64 to a FAT32 partition and it gives me errors. That is the generic .exe icon, or the placeholder before the proper icon is loaded. For Windows 7, see what the icons look like using another user account.

For a GPT disk, you need to use bcdboot w:\windows /s s: /f uefi. The ShowWindowsLive object is deprecated.

Windows 7 does not use an INI file like XP did for unattended software installation. Now you would use an unattend.xml file, and using FirstLogonCommands to specify software to install. You can find example code here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/139572-ask-your-seven-xml-here/

Validating your answer file in WSIM will help you greatly. For example, SkipUserOOBE is deprecated in Windows 7.

What you are looking for seems to be the Lite Skin of old? IPB's "Lite" skins were originally designed for WAP access, which I think barely exists anymore.

Why would you specify a default setting? Remove SkipMachineOOBE and SkipRearm.
