  1. Are you sure it really is closed and not just gone into the System Tray? Other IMs I use are similar, when closing them just makes the GUI go away... as if it is designed as such... I will note that sometimes it is difficult to get the GUI to re-appear again.
  2. This gives an idea: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/139368-how-to-verify-that-mbae-is-working-correctly/
  3. I've seen wireless routers come in these two flavors: 1. Has internal firewall to keep WLAN and LAN networks separate. 2. Assigns different Subnet Mask to WLAN and LAN, which effectively separates them.
  4. This analogy doesn't work for desktop computing. MS has no actual need to woo a prospective customer by using the design of their product. People buy Windows because their software requires it. We do not have the luxury of changing to another OS like you can just change cars. Maybe MS is operating under the automobile analogy and that is where the problem is.
  5. The inf hash is not present in the catalog. The Driver Package appears to be tampered. The Driver Package appears to be tampered but user wants to install it anyway.! sig: Verifying file against specific (valid) catalog failed! (0x80096002)! sig: Verifying file against specific Authenticode(tm) catalog failed! (0x800b0100)!!! dvi: Add Service: Binary 'I:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\System32\Drivers\ipmlebl.sys' for service 'IPMLEBL' is not present.Have you modified this INF in any way? Doing so will break the digital signature. It can't find ipmlebl.sys... and I am unsure as to why the path looks like that. You may have a bad driver. And why is your Windows directory shown as I:\ ?
  6. At this time I would consider it to be FUD/rumor. It is an old one too, read up the "answer" here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11573741/would-it-be-possible-for-microsoft-to-phase-out-the-win32-api-in-future-versions No one would be onboard with such a change at this point... Even now as MS is trying to get more people to make Modern apps rather than standard desktop ones, it is way too early to imagine MS would do that any time soon. Maybe in 10-20 years the OS will have evolved to that state and we will see something different then. If anything, I would expect that Win32 could be deemed "legacy" and no longer a Best Practice, but still remain functional as a compatibility option.
  7. Oh but I need Java to play Minecraft! My security setup seems to work well enough, but I don't get so crazy about it. I have UAC enabled, Windows firewall, MSSE and then the firewall in the router. It is maybe my browsing habits that are a little different. My primary browser is a Mozilla type (Firefox or Palemoon) with NoScript. That addon does well enough to block any sort of thing from entering from a webpage. However, I will not compromise my computer's security to ensure that a website works correctly... For example, if there is some site that I want to use (or currently use) that generates an XSS warning, and thus is not operable without using an exception... I won't use it until the warning no longer exists. This happened a few years ago on Facebook, where I decided to stop using certain apps because they were using XSS. The response from the support group was to add an exception to allow apps on Facebook to use XSS! I use other browsers for specific thing. IE is used for Microsoft related websites only... Chrome is used primarily for Google related sites like Youtube. I have MBAM installed but I only use it if I suspect something is up. When I do repairs or virus cleaning for friends or family, I typically recommend they use Chrome as their browser. It seems to do a good enough job stopping attacks from coming in through the web. And that is really the #1 source of infections these days. Very few people are still using actual email clients, and now are using web-based versions instead. Outlook and Outlook Express used to be virus havens!
  8. In my experience, it is usually the CPU that is the most reliable part in a computer (except maybe the power cord). I've definately need CPUs operate in the way you describe, but then I've also seen where a CPU may act strange in one board and then fine in another board. It was just recently a co-worker was working with a notebook that had problems working properly in WinPE. No part swaps fixed it except for changing the CPU. It was actually the first time I've encountered a scenario where the CPU was at fault for WinPE problems.... usually it is bad RAM.
  9. Hopefully some information regarding the installation of this driver can be found in the log file at c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log.
  10. I didn't get to read it either, that's why I only commented on the topic title.
  11. See if this topic helps any. It mentions IvyBridge boards where USB3 works fine. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/172720-can-windows-xp-be-installed-on-ivy-bridge-intel-cpu/
  12. Did I read it correctly that you don't want Tbird to change when you enable Aero? There seems to be a few different add-ons for Tbird that have this or similar effect. Here is one I found: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/ignore-aero/ Here is the search terms I put into google: Mozilla thunderbird skin aero
  13. I would not see a thread titled "Windows 10 is god awful" as being constructive.
  14. It certain could... You'll have to wait and see.
  15. You need to know your router's internal IP address. This should be seen on the PC if you go to CMD and run ipconfig -all and it will be the default gateway address. I will use an example that it is 192.168.1.1. At a point where you cannot access the internet, you run this in the CMD: ping 192.168.1.1 Where, the IP address you ping is the IP shown as the Default Gateway. If you can ping this address, it means you have communication with your router. You can additionally try these ping commands: ping google.com ping 216.58.219.206
  16. I removed your link and your attachment. We have rules against that sort of advertisement.
  17. Is the router running DHCP or are you using static IP on your computer? When you lose connection to the router, can you still ping it?
  18. I was recently forced into installing Skype so that I could still use my Live account for IMs. I had been using Trillian previously (and still do for AOL) however MS has shut off all the external interfaces into the Live/MSN Messenger network, rending third party or legacy software versions useless for IM.
  19. On that note (the Pando scenario) ... you may be able to disable any sort of peer-to-peer sharing by using the Firewall and using an outbound UDP rule.
  20. Based on past experience, I'd consider having a removable battery to be essential. Androids seem to have a habit of eventually locking up and a battery reseat is the only way to recover. Also, I don't like devices where you can't replace the battery... Apple brings this up with the Ipod/phone products... where if the battery needs to be replaced you just have to buy a whole new phone instead.
  21. My go-to setting for Windows Updates is the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" option. I haven't really used Windows 10 to any large extent, is that no longer an option?
  22. Welcome to the MSFN!
  23. Stefan I fixed your link... I think maybe your use of brackets in posting must have confused the forum software to not render that second link properly. Anyways, it is fine for others to have an opinion of something... I don't get all the hate... at least so far these newer versions of Windows can still be modified to fit your own desires.
  24. It is never a good idea to install driver updates from Windows Update.
