  1. Have you tried running the application in compatibility mode? I can't find a Super Solvers called Math. What is the full title?
  2. Welcome to the MSFN!
  3. Your post moved back here instead of from where it was posted: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173882-anyone-here-heard-of-zeroredirect1com/ No need to follow people around the site. In the case of that thread, posting "should have done this or that" doesn't help his current situation. Tarun is correct that the hosts file does not prevent infections, although it can hinder said infection from working properly... IF the url it is attempting to use is already marked. As a general rule, using the hosts file is not recommended because of the reasons he outlined. You have to understand that you (nor I) can compare performance of properly set up system (maybe that is in our dreams ) against what an average computer may be. The same goes for a fresh install into a VM. The average computer is underpowered and hobbled by all the junk the user have installed over time. The average user cares not for actual performance and uptimes, and even the "power user" to this day insists on doing fresh installs once something goes awry. I consider any sort of malware prevention, system or network protection ideas to be a YMMV issue and there is no right or wrong... except not having a network connection.
  4. It sounds exactly like an error in the script. At least, I can say I had something similar happen before, but opened multiple CMDs instead.
  5. I don't think you can do it with just the XML. The documentation does not make any sort of mention about that capability. I wonder if MDT can do this.
  6. It is possible, but not using Setup and an unattend alone. You'd need to use some form of wrapper to do the following: 1. If Disk 0 exist, determine the disk size. 2. If disk size 500GB or lower, use XML#1 3. If disk size 501GB or larger, use XML#2 4. Launch setup.exe with unattend switch pointing to the desired XML file. For the two different XML files, #1 will be the type to create full disk partition, #2 will only create 500GB partition. This is the first thing I can think of. You'd need to use some sort of programming or scripting language (maybe even batch can do it) for the wrapper.
  7. It depends on if they are using the MS way or some other software to do recovery. If the MS way, there is no special key... it is just F8 which doesn't use the MBR.
  8. Another thing I notice that I don't like... the Start Menu opens by itself. It only does this when there is an internet connection.
  9. No, the issue occurred before that edit was made.
  10. I have sent the OP a PM about it. We will see about how to get it resolved. bphlpt, spoiler tag is ideal, however we have difficulty editing the post. Maybe my computer needs more RAM!
  11. I didn't change anything each time I open the program. I don't know why it did that.
  12. This OS is driving me nuts. I've seen Explorer.exe crash during OOBE twice. You can't disable Cortana (or that search thing on the taskbar) without logging into a MS account. And now this... I've been using Win10 on a 4k notebook... It went to sleep and upon waking, certain elements of Windows are WAY TOO BIG. OK its cool. Not sure what happened... how did my icons get so big. I just had to take a screenshot of this! well... then this happened... Is that really necessary? ps: I was torn as to whether I should put this post here or in the Funny Farm...
  13. Audit Mode: "Normal" Mode: The average temp is a little higher, but while in "Normal" mode, it will spike occasionally. It does not do this in Audit Mode. I will say that this "Normal" test was done without having anything open and having no internet connection.
  14. Oddly enough... I am able to deploy and boot an image of Windows 10 build 10074... just wanted to point it out.
  15. Split from this thread (the one in question) http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173791-too-high-disk-usage-because-of-ntoskrnlexe/
  16. OK I wasn't sure... I think the "does the computer need to be on" part was throwing me off. I'm sure we'll see the ability to install updates while the PC is off in some future version of Windows.
  17. On the side, regarding temperature in Windows 10 altogether... I found that the idle temp is lower in Windows 10 while in Audit Mode. It may have been an error in my part as I had done all my tests while in Audit Mode of each OS. I had made an image of the Windows 10 OS after doing the video test, and then did a deployment test to make sure the image worked... because of weird usernames and goofy fonts reasons. After going through OOBE the fans kicked up to an audible level, same type increase I heard when doing HTML5 on Chrome.
  18. It sounds like you can use Make_PE3: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143529-make-pe3-program-to-create-portable-windows-7-pe/ Although there are many other PE builders out there. It is not legal to use WinPE as an OS and it shouldn't be installed on a PC. Microsoft makes other products to be used as thin clients, specifically in the Embedded line and the upcoming IoT products with Windows 10.
  19. What is the question?
  20. I did look it up and had found that "Administrator_ploc" was reported as far back as Windows 7 Beta, at least. Not sure about the strange fonts. I also got it into Audit Mode via answer file, I will try the old-reliable (Ctrl+Shift+F3) tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. I'm just concerned about doing dev work on this version of the OS where half the things I need to work do not, and other things make it look corrupted.
  21. I don't think so. As they say... YMMV. Considering different hardware and software used, I think that in order to fully understand the why Windows 10 runs hotter in some instances than others, more tests would need to be done. And then to figure out in what conditions is this the case. This isn't so say the sdt is wrong in saying that Windows 10 runs hotter on his PC than Windows 7 on his PC... I'd wonder if he can also do the Youtube 4k test and see if the results are the same. Or try other media players besides VLC. If the source of the 4k video is on the HDD or ODD, then maybe their extra use is adding to the general increase of temperature on the system? What about other things that might be running? My tests were done on new installs with minimal software installed and in an air conditioned building. Also perhaps the internal cooling flow of a notebook differs greatly from that of a desktop? Anyways, it seems only that my test shows there is no flaw within Windows 10 causing an overly large spike in temperature on the CPU when trying to play 4k video at fullscreen.
  22. Content in the System Reserved (300MB) partition may change for a variety of reasons. What I can think of is Bitlocker (encryption) or fiddling with the BCD. The BCD contains the files used to locate where the OS is located, and any other boot options such as to run recovery, startup repair or whatnot. You can think of the BCD as a modern day (read overly complicated) version of the boot.ini in XP. One example of the BCD changing would be if you were to install a newer Windows OS to make a dual boot. Recovery partition might only have the WindowsRE boot image and a factory image used for reinstalling Windows. However, it also depends on the manufacturer of the computer and if they are using the MS recovery software or their own thing. If it is the regular Microsoft way, that partition should not change over time. In the case of a disk failure, you may or may not have difficulty restoring your backups since it sounds like you are making partition backups. I do not know the capabilities of the TeraByte program you are using, but make sure to see if there is a guide for doing a restore based on Windows 7 and if there are any problems. The only software I've personally used to restore/image a failed Windows 7 OS (without having to get into advanced things like the BCD) is using Ghost 12, but that was using full disk images. Maybe others have used the TeraByte software (or something else) and can chime in.
  23. It appears this only happens in Audit Mode. User and Group descriptions and names look normal after running sysprep. Also the Start Menu and taskbar work normally now.
  24. Windows 10 is a pain. The Start Menu and task bar does not work so I won't be able to test with the Spartan browser. Maybe I can do some updates and see what happens later. 4k Windows 10 Build 10074 x64 Chrome Flash CPU 48-66c, Video 47-50c 4k Windows 10 Build 10074 x64 Chrome HTML5 CPU 51-69c, Video 47-49c 4k Windows 10 Build 10074 x64 IE11 Flash CPU 49-58c, Video 46-48c The only bump I am seeing is HTML5 in all the tests. In most test cases, I would only test using IE, however since it was a Google website I decided to test Chrome as well. It is likely that other browsers that default to the HTML5 mode on Youtube will also see a temperature increase. Now all 9 tests together. 4k Windows 7PRO x64 Chrome Flash CPU 49-70c, Video 49-50c4k Windows 7PRO x64 Chrome HTML5 CPU 49-79c, Video 43-49c4k Windows 7PRO x64 IE10 Flash CPU 44-70c, Video 44-50c4k Windows 8.1PRO x64 Chrome Flash CPU 47-57c, Video 47-49c4k Windows 8.1PRO x64 Chrome HTML5 CPU 49-79c, Video 43-47c4k Windows 8.1PRO x64 IE11 Flash CPU 46-63c, Video 45-49c 4k Windows 10 10074 x64 Chrome Flash CPU 48-66c, Video 47-50c4k Windows 10 10074 x64 Chrome HTML5 CPU 51-69c, Video 47-49c4k Windows 10 10074 x64 IE11 Flash CPU 49-58c, Video 46-48cManufacturer has 2 different drivers. One for Windows 7 and one for Windows 8. Windows 10 testing was done with the Windows 8 driver. Also to note that the CPU temp threashold was not met on Windows 10, so no screaming fans.
