  1. Yeah i know, the irony is i'm not a mind reader either. Thanks thats rich from a super moderator to call me ignorant. Really friendly attitude you have going on there, hope that's working out for you.
  2. Alien42: Well you can, but you have to realize at some point you are looking at having to use different things in order to access a volume then just a simple character (by that i mean like dir c:\) How to create and use NTFS mounted drives in Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003 I'm sure there are many work arounds on this subject, but that is the general idea, described in link given, i think. I'm no expert in that subject for the record =)
  3. There's nothing like getting people happy =) I'd insert a cheers smiley right about here if i had one =)
  4. You serious? That's a lot of coffee and smoke for just 3-4 days. I actually think you're optimistic. In any case if you could make it possible anyway to get .net integrated on source, that'd still be just as awesome, no matter how long it takes you.
  5. Yzwowl: What ? Err, i dont need more questions, but thanks i guess =) Jaclaz: Thanks, a lot of that made some sense, tho i will not try to say i understand all that right away. I liked this topic: http://www.ss64.org/viewtopic.php?id=282 (Question About DeQuote Script - topic) Anyway, i just ran through the windows install with just using spaces instead of "", and it works. So for now im happy =)
  6. Kind of, ok so not kind of, a stupid problem, but it's a loose end, and i want to get it done. Goal: get this running in one line. the culprit is "" , the problem being: %Source%Silence\Installers\spybotsd.exe /Silent /SP- /Components="" /NoRestart %Source%Silence\Installers\SpybotSDIncludes.exe /S so like i want to run it f.ex : ______x__________________________________________________________??_________x________x_____________________________________________x cmd /R "%Source%Silence\Installers\spybotsd.exe /Silent /SP- /Components="" /NoRestart" & cmd /R "%Source%Silence\Installers\SpybotSDIncludes.exe /S" i just tried this instead: cmd /R "%Source%Silence\Installers\spybotsd.exe /Silent /SP- /Components= /NoRestart__" & cmd /R "%Source%Silence\Installers\SpybotSDIncludes.exe /S" replaced "" with just 2 empty spaces.Shown here as __ , obviously forum doesnt allow multiple spaces or something. According to what i could gauge in task mgr that worked. But well, how would one solve this usually or is that the answear? I can imagine this is asked many times, but i had no idea on what to search for..
  7. Okay kind of old topic, but this still interests me. About that dialog thing, wont that just remove just that, the dialog thing, and not the actual enabling of indexing service as a default?
  8. I'm going to do a clean install so will get down on it then, but i know unregging just files will work, but my intent is to just remove that thab, not disable or remove WU compability. Procmon was neat yes, it's kind of hyperactive though xD
  9. Crap, i didnt get to read this before now, well i think i re added a hotfix share link or left one in, either one or both. Well i'll try to keep that in mind next time around. Shame tho about hotfixshare links, i dont understand what's so special about that? Isnt it just links?
  10. When you have done so, either myself or some other interested member, may be able to help with a resonable solution. We are not mind readers, only you know exactly what it is you want, if you do not tell us this information in its entirety then how can we be expected to help you achieve your goal? in post #5 i think it was pretty clear of an example of what i wanted to do? I tried that mind readers comment, got my head bitten off =(
  11. afaik it isnt possible. If you find a new trick to do it anyway, let me know. You can run the installer with silent switches however or find a silent installer. Welcome to the forums! xD
  12. geek: Excuse me but that is a load of BS if you're saying what i think you are.. Why does the wish for having software portable automatically equal slow computer in your thinking is beyond me. Can you explain? At current state i have 28 unpacked games, i say unpacked, because when i install a game, i make sure it runs of its own folder and nothing else, then i archive it with winrar or 7zip, with any reg files or batches i made for that game, so i can easily go unpack a game if i feel nostalgic and without hazzle pick up where i left off with configuration set the way i like it and any savegames if so. As for legal issues, as long as he uses a plain no-cd work around i dont see the problem, he bought the game, want to play it without hazzle. As far as i know, using a nocd for a game isnt illegal. For one, game updates are free to download for anyone, and you would still need the game to play it, and still need to go through the installation procedure at least 1 time. Now if only game developers could realize it isnt funny to keep inserting media into computer for each game one plays, its getting there tho, albeit slowly.
  13. yes and yes and yes.. Not hard, but tedious, it takes some time vs the seconds it takes to just set a service to manual. I never would rely on 3d party resources like blackviper. Manual = the fast solution, not necessarily better. When i was on vista i had it down to 8 services (i quit vista around june, vista just feels to slow nomatter what i (it's like 10ms ping extra online easily(with only tcp-ip even)), 4 if i only needed internet, audio and 3d( basically just gaming needs). If you have visited my profile you could see i wrote down an example on this here http://www.msfn.org/board/Multimedia-Class...587#entry765587 (i just got nostalgic, lol, read my reply to stuttering issues here:http://www.msfn.org/board/Multimedia-Class-Scheduler-t117564.html&view=findpost&p=766476#entry766476 also on page 6 or 7 i wrote something i still interesting, lol ) Which will show you that windows audio service needs nothing else then Rpcss service, which as i remember just about, if not all, every service on vista needs.Hm i think all services needs it, its the remote procedure call service, same name as on pre-vista windows, like xp and 2003 f.ex If you read that thread you can see some people dont believe it, but i assure you it is really possible to take control over your own operating system. I myself have stopped doing manual tweaking, and instead just writing everything down or exporting to registry file or writing down in batch files what to remove etc. On another note, the point of removing dependencies, is that services can then truly be set to manual, but understand what i mean by that, if they then start, they start because they truly are needed. F.example the audio services on vista. You dont actually need them all just to get sound, one is for vista sound scheme, one for eax kind of driver plugins. You should be able to disable everyone but windows audio right away, and even that is possible to disable (or set to manual and it will not start because it isnt being used, but that will take a lot of registry deletions, instead of just removing the dependencies first). Sorry if post was too long.
  14. Jedi Academy is built on the quake 3 engine or something isn't it? Then it already should be portable. All you need to know to make any game portable is if it installs any codecs or such, and what registry entries it need. Checkout application data f.ex under profiles folder (d&s) for any file there. Once you know where everything is, you could just setup two batches for copying eventual savegames\config from profiles dir to a bakup dir to your game dir, so you can take your current savegames/config with you.
  15. from one of my batches: Rem Remotepg.dll unregging this removes the Remote tab on system properties (my computer if u will) RegSvr32 /u /s %windir%\system32\remotepg.dll
  16. I opened one of the last beta drivers i had used, i use another sound card now, find wdma_emu.inf inside the archive. path i had: S:\Windows\Win_Drivers\xi-fi\SBXF_PCDRVBETA_US_2_18_0000.exe\Drivers\wdm\ copy entire WDM folder and point nlite to wdma_emu.inf. OR if you have different driver, simply extract driver, set explorer to search for any file containing the text content of: XFi.DeviceDesc="Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM)" and you should be good / you have found the driver file.
  17. Jeremy: There will also be fragmentation at some point i guess, unless the filesystem is built to automatically place files in optimal order? I've been running with 64KB clusters for some years and its awesome, defragment a 1TB disk in just minutes, file copying and moving is very fast staggering at a minimum of 70mb/s across drives, and typical 100/mb s. Creating and copying large files, such as iso's, especially like linux iso's at several gigabytes is just fun. Using Directory opus, worlds greatest file manager ever (and more), you can enable to always see transfer rates. It's just plain old geekie, good fun! =) JKDefrag64 is very nice imho, i used to like defraggers as o&o, perfect disk etc, even diskkeeper, but they all got bloated at one point, and got hit by the trend that is nowadays, it needs to look good to sell. Forgetting the whole point of that its supposed to be a 100% performance program, not a application that just looks good, and installs all kinds of services into system, startup programs one never needs etc. JKDefrag i can just setup to automatically run whenever i want, i can use it as a portable program, running defrag automatically after windows install is just great as it takes all drives it find and defrags them. Priceless when you just have an unattended windows dvd, and it really is set&forget it, in its truest possible form.
  18. Short answear 1: yes. Tho there are benefits to having a service disabled *if* you can also unregister the components that the "asking service" requests from the disabled service, ( by unregister i mean you remove the NEED for the service to ask for other services, in other words remove its dependencies on other services) I am talking about common used, non logical, used system files. Such as dll files that are used evenly across several services, with no logic to explain why service A wants to use system files that there seems be no reason for that to need, from any other Service B, C or even more. and 2:------------- I was going to write a more lengthy post on this but ill try to keep it short and give a tip instead. If a service asks for a service that does not exist or isnt available, it can in some cases continue to do so unlimited amounts of times. This does of course mean that your windows will continue to ask for something that isnt available, which causes latency spikes in system, and could also quickly build up a huge error log if that service logs itself. As an example tho. A real world example : VmWare Workstation, a software pieced used by many on these forums, continuously will ask for Performance logs and and alerts logging(to put it short). However it will work very well without the service enabled, or even if the PLAA service does not exist (you deleted it). But it WILL continue to drop error messages in system logs. This isnt good in my point of view. Sorry if this became too confusing. Its kind of complicated to try and explain imho.
  19. Goto display properties: appearance:select advanced: and check what menu item looks like. Also i have seen your problem happen when some programs one tries to change color of compressed files, that are blue by default, as you said blue, and so one changes color of that, and it also changes color of other things, which very well could be the case here. I know for a fact that X-setup and other programs have this tweak wrong, ie it works, but it doesnt work because it changes other things as well. Why it does that, i dont know, it might be interference with active desktop or not, classic win3.11 desktop mode or many other things.
  20. Here's the thing.. Language bar already runs on default so you need to kill the process before you just import any registry settings that is ment to disable it. i just add: taskkill /IM ctfmon.exe then i just import a reg file with which among other things contain: ; Disable Language Bar [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] "CTFMON.EXE"=- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CTF] "Disable Thread Input Manager"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CTF\LangBar] "ShowStatus"=dword:00000004 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CTF\MSUTB] "ShowDeskBand"=dword:00000000 And this works brilliantly for me. i do this after first login, and run the registry tweak before and after.
  21. KB 938371 was updated to v2, after sp1 was released, so i always integrate it = Windows6.0-KB938371-v2-x64.msu , before i slip sp1. Resulting iso is 0.001% slimmer and well, never had a broken install of vista that way yet.
  22. Gotta love it when a new user logins in with the solution, which i hope this is? I can at least believe it since i Gigabyte as well as other companies, brand other hardware as their own and thus repackage it.. Good job Couger, and welcome to the forums! xD
  23. Crahak: So use "VM Size" column instead of "Mem Usage" to see what memory usage programs have? I'm going to make a registry export of that. Any other values i should enable? How to save your own Start regedit, customize as you like, settings update speed and columns, and size of columns. To export settings so you can take them with you on your next windows install: Open regedit, goto this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\TaskManager Right Click on Taskmanager and select Export, and you're done and done. SettingsTaskMgr.reg Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\TaskManager] "UsrColumnSettings"=hex:1c,0c,00,00,34,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,78,00,00,00,01,00,\ 00,00,1d,0c,00,00,35,04,00,00,01,00,00,00,23,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,1e,0c,00,\ 00,36,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,5d,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,1f,0c,00,00,39,04,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,64,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,20,0c,00,00,37,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,78,\ 00,00,00,01,00,00,00 "Preferences"=hex:9c,02,00,00,f4,01,00,00,02,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ eb,01,00,00,e8,00,00,00,66,05,00,00,7d,03,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,\ 00,00,00,03,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,60,00,60,00,3c,00,60,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,\ 00,00,00,02,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,05,00,00,00,0b,00,00,00,0e,00,00,00,10,00,\ 00,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,d4,\ 00,00,00,32,00,00,00,7c,00,00,00,27,00,00,00,41,00,00,00,46,00,00,00,3c,00,\ 00,00,3b,00,00,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,05,00,00,00,06,00,00,00,07,00,\ 00,00,01,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,\ ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,ff,47,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
  24. Yes i have absolutely no idea on how to troubleshoot windows. You sure made it look great to help a newbie. I was trying to be nice and i get called a douchebag,???, i even wrote steps to take to do something about it. WTF! Seven Alive: The steps i wrote with safemode makes it possible for certain files to get cleaned that can't while not in safemode unless he is doing sfc/wfp patch/tweak, and i couldnt know either. Nice job of rewriting what i wrote.
  25. I'm sorry. This doesnt sound like much, but I truly hope you can get better, I kind of dont know what to say... I'm glad that you take the situation seriously, only way to get something done about it I guess.
