  1. Probably not, since there has been no Win95 support for several stable versions. Where you get that?? Win95 is still supported according to Opera. However, Win98 is recommended. http://www.opera.com/support/search/view/386/
  2. Herbalist, there is truth in what you say but unlike what you think I do know some " common Win98 users" . I maintain their computer. They don't understand what you are talking about, and let me tell you, they don't care. Overhere on MSFN the common user is probably not very common but MSFN is not the real world.
  3. Looks like that you haven't read yet this thread : http://www.msfn.org/board/UberKern-t115731.html Sure I did But that's not official support. Latest KernelEx does nice things too. But also very beta and unofficial, no quarantees. Not good for the common user.
  4. And Opera FTW. Seriously, if you're still a win9x user and don't run IE, then Opera is the best alternative. Opera is a good web browser, but there was no need to suddenly swoop in and recommend it in a thread about the end-of-life of Netscape Navigator. Opera fans can be annoying... Don't be oversensitive. Geek is right, your standard solution for any IE related issue/problem is "get SeaMonkey" Exactly because this is a "end of live" thread, recommending alternative options is not that strange! Firefox, Seamonkey and the latest, shortly revived from death Netscape, are all Mozilla under the hood. Win9x support for Firefox3 is gone already so fear the future for your Seamonkey. From this point of view Opera is a very good and sensible choice regardless the pro's and con's of these browsers. And it's very well possible that win95 support is fixed in the stable version. Common behaviour for lots of sofware lately. I've had problems beta sofware on Win98se, sometimes even refuses to work or install at all, but fortunatly later stable versions where good. Opera 9.5beta runs on my win98se but is bit slow compared to 9.27. I hope it will be fixed.
  5. You can also find Everest Home Edition 2.20.405 here -- http://old-versions.net/show/Everest_Home_Edition/50/ Update: I know that many people here really love Everest and highly recommend it, but IMHO SIW (System Information for Windows) by Gabriel Topala is just as good, if not better. It's light on system resources and doesn't require installation. Just download and use it. Easy to read output files and navigate. If you want to give it a try, here's the link: SIW 2008-04-02 [1.69 MB] http://www.gtopala.com/index.html I agree, SIW is better. That's why it is already on the list But for Everest I recommend older version 1.51. It can also be found following the link you provided. Everest 2+ is freeware but also crippleware. Everest 1.51 is the last fully functional free version.
  6. Right click trick part two, improved: Select target file first with left click. Now press shift and rightclick and you'll never miss again because your mouse pointer doesn't need to be hovering over your file anymore.
  7. Not easy enough There's no need to delete the file association first. You can right-click on the file while holding the shift key, this will bring up "Open With" in the menu. Make sure that "always use this program to open this type of file" is checked and you have your new file association. Personally I prefer the method that you mentioned before, filetypes in folder options. Besides managing file-associations you can also edit or create shell extensions and customize icons.
  8. Bad Adobe! Making things harder for Win98 The downside of this older version is that it's seriously vulnerable (remote system access): http://secunia.com/advisories/26027/ http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bull.../apsb07-12.html As you can read in the last article, there is an older patched version 7 for Win95/NT.
  9. No, try Tclock or EppieDesktop for that. Or better, the new but already famous Uberskin.
  10. The site is in maintenance...and it gives me a link to vista transformation pack8! For who's interested, it's here too: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/eXPe...wnload-456.html The biggest downside of this software is that it can't be customized. Sure, RP7 does much more but that's more a total system remake than just a customization. It can't be compared with anything The eXperience Pack changes most (but not all) system icons by their XP counterparts and add's a bunch of desktop theme's to your displayproperties. But you won't have any choice yourself, you must love XP icons... It can also change your startup and shutdown logo and your systemsounds into XP ones. Something that you can do yourself, with free choice. Any icontweaker in combination with Uberskin will do much better than eXperience Pack. It's outdated anyway.
  11. It works in Maxthon 1.6 (IE6 engine). It shows a error when I close this test page but so did the former version. But on Opera I have the same problem. It detects the installation correct but I see a blank test screen too
  12. Thanks for posting. The JEMMEX dos utils make me very happy. I might have done things wrong in the past with others, but this is the first UDMA manager that works on my VIA chipset/mainboard. Backing up my Windows partition now takes 14 minutes instead of 25!
  13. To be exact I must say that of course it is obvious that you can't copy Windows files while Windows itself is running. A boot disk with another operating system is necessary. Even that is not true Not with the standard windows copy function off course, but with for instance with a tool like HD copy you can copy everthing on your c: to another partition while running windows. No other OS or bootfloppy needed.
  14. Sorry, I didn't. But in the latest version these filters can be disabled. Good thing because they are indeed slower.
  15. I agree, it hurts your eyes. It's a nice color blue but the blocks must go. Sorry
  16. I don't have Avast installed on my system now but for clarity you are saying start the scan from AvastSS.scr. Do you double click on that file? Is that for a full scan only? what about scanning just single files or folders. You can access the settings in displaysettings/screensavers in your control panel. You can choose to scan folders and drives but not single files. And yes just doubleclick on the file, it's in your system directory. Btw, this icon thing is really annoying. It seems to me that this screensaver and the logviewer are the only part of Avast that are not affected. I just checked the program-settings screen cos I didn't remember that these screensaver settings are not there. And my startmenu and quicklaunchbar where blank. So I reboot...... And now I accessed the screensaver settings and I can reboot again. Good thing Avast works fine in the background and that you don't really need to open the GUI
  17. You are lucky. On my system the menubar and desktop icons disappear too. You can work around this by manually starting the build in Avast screensaver to do a full system scan. This is icon-safe. You can create a shortcut to AvastSS.scr to make this easy.
  18. I have a 10Mb/s ADSL2 broadband (1 Mb/s up) and my torrents work ok on Win98. Problem is dat Win98 won't allow you more than 100 connections by default. For torrents you want more! To get more you'll need to do this: Make a new string named "MaxConnections" with value >100 in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP I have set mine at 250 and I told utorrent to use 200 maximum so I can still do some web-surfing while downloading. I need a very good torrent but I actually have seen downloads at >1MB/s:) (megabyte, not bit) Running 3 torrents is no problem. More than that works too but is not recommended, same goes for XP. What I don't like with fast internet and Win98 is the high processor usage. I do have a decent 3COM NIC with drivers that allow a low processor usage (meaning the NIC itself takes over to save CPU cycles). But it doesn't really want to work, I notice some difference but when the speed really goes up the system still becomes laggy. I searched this on the web but I can't find any usefull info on this. I have a tool called Cybertweak to tweak TCP/IP settings that claims that Win98 doesn't support it. But the 3COM Win98 driver does offer this option. Any info on this matter is more than welcome.
  19. Increasing latency might work to prevent stuttering. But if your video card takes up to much bandwidth there won't be much to increase. So try decreasing the latency of your video card, usually the latency is set at maximum (255) by default. I have DTM racedriver that runs swift on my system but I have to lower the latency of my Radeon 9600 to 128 (default 255) to prevent sound stuttering. While other games or multimedia apps don't need this. But, I don't have any idea why you didn't have this problem before installing AP. That's strange but the symptoms you describe and the fact that you ruled out other possibilities points me into this direction. And in case of harddisk DMA problems you will see overall degrading of system performance, certainly not limited to just sound in just one game! Your problem is to subtle for such a serious case. To set the latency you can use agptimer
  20. Good point. I browsed around on this site and it seems outdated. All this information only applies to CRT's.

    Windows ME

Only on a timescale! It's the main reason why ME exists, Microsoft wanted to offer their customers something "new" between W98 and XP. If I had both W98 and ME then I would go for the third option: Win98se + 98SE2ME. Best of both worlds.
  22. Try Avast. If your are looking for a freebie that has Win98 compatibility it's the only option. It's a fully functional AV.
  23. Most impressive, a 305 kb download! (No, not just a online installer) I've used this software before and I still would if it could burn DVD's as well. To bad that only the plus version will do that. If this free version could do that it would be more popular. But for those who don't burn DVD this is very good software. Also try Prism, NCH's videoconverter (404 kb executable ). Very simple and small but together with ffdshow quite powerful.
  24. Thanks! Found it, should have looked better..
