  1. Wrong analogy. There are also plenty apps that run on w2k and onwards but will never run on win9x by design. Kernel modifications like KernelEx don't change this.
  2. It's still there: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95815
  3. Sorry, didn't work. Still bsod on shutdown. Re-installing without 32bits icons broke 32bits icon support on my system. After re-installing again with 32bits icons I had ugly black "shadows". I uninstalled RP9 and went back to default win98 looks. Tried to install RP9 again but still the same ugly black shadows. At this moment I decided that restoring a system backup would be a faster way to fix this than crushing my brain on it and try all the (futile) options that will result from that
  4. Hold Explorer window open when you're changing icon theme.Thx, but after a reboot the problem is back. Mmmm, I can't shutdown, get a bluescreen. After pressing a key the videocard (ATI, DVI) goes wacko and shows black screen with white dots. Restarting and restart to dos is ok. Is this related? (Uninstalling RP9 fixes this, uninstalling KernelEx 4 does not.)
  5. Nice, all Tihiy's Win98 goodies in one download! I installed this on top of my already manually tweaked system-icons. Not all are changed correctly when switching to RP9 Vista icons. Some are left alone, like my drive-icons which is fine because I want to keep those, but my configuration-screen and printerfolder where wrong and needed correction. Documents on the desktop is ok, but not in the menu. All this could probably be prevented by restoring all icons to default before installing RP9. My system font is Tahoma, it was already and I set it in RP9, and I see some truncation in my startmenu. The main feature (I already had the other things) of this RP9 are the improved standard buttons in the explorer tool-bar. But when you hover over those with your mouse you will see the old one's again. A little bit disappointing
  6. Only Word and Excel files are supported so it's not a complete suite. But very nice find anyway. Works very well (doesn't like Uberskin but cleartype is ok) and is much faster and smaller than OpenOffice. Registration required (free) to get rid of the nag screen on opening.
  7. The screen-shot on that page matches the 4GB system from Loew posted here on msfn. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...118097&st=1 AMD sempron 3400+ and 3647 MB RAM seen by Windows. Could be coincidental off course
  8. Raw read errors are critical. There are several smart-attributes and this one is on top of the list. Probably because it's the one that is most significant. It's the rate of hardware errors that occur when the head reads the disk-surface. This can and will cause data corruption. All this can be expected on old worn out drives, but not in this case. I'm afraid that this drive is far from recovered. These 7200.11 stories are so sad. Good that I have a 7200.10.
  9. Are you asking us if your laptop has a NIC (network interface controller)? I can't see that from here But, a quick Google search revealed to me that this is a >10 year old laptop that came standard with a 33K modem in most countries. That is not going to help you. It also has 2 PCMCIA slots and (wireless) NIC adapters for it do exist. In case you have one, hooking up with any router or switch or whatever is no problem with Win98. In case you don't have, this is a win98 compatible example: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WPC11-Wirele...M/ref=de_a_smtd
  10. Without having any info on your network settings it's hard to say, but I suspect a broken winsocket or wrong DNS settings. Do you get a response on a ping? And check if your internet-settings in the configuration screen is not set to look for a connection. (Obvious perhaps but often overlooked, Win98 is old enough to expect you to have a dial-up connection by default)
  11. I failed to hook up a Nikon Coolpix on a Win98 system with nusb already on it. Nusb didn't see it and the supplied Win98 driver didn't work either. Win95 drivers did not come with it! Google found some tricks that might make the driver work and adding the coolpix to the nusb .inf might work too. But I decided to go for the easy solution: a simple cheap USB cardreader. Works for sure, also on Win95.
  12. You are using three different types of ram together. You have a PC133 (but sticker says 100?) with 3-3-3 timings, a PC100-222 and a PC100-322. That's a bad mixture And some mainboards don't like mixing at all. Try using just the 128 MB chip to see if things improve. Make sure the timings are correct in the bios. Don't read stickers , try putting it on 133MHz if your mainboard supports it. I'm running a Winbond PC100-222@133-333 for years without problems. Also try some other tool to check the voltages or do some real measurements if you can. Your Sandra readings can't be right, but values far less off can cause all kind of problems. Bad overall performance included.
  13. Yet another huge Win98 improvement by Tihiy Don't see any display problems anymore, memory/resource usage is no problem on my Duron 1200+348Mb SDRAM. Wel, not more than before I mean. Large webpages with lot's of pictures still kill my systems speed but that's normal. C'mon my friend, you are just kidding right? Please look again or go see a doctor for your eye problem. And do a google search for "cleartype"
  14. Sorry I forget to mention this in my (too) early morning rush. It's indeed IE only. K-Meleon (Gecko engine) is fine. And it looks so much better this way
  15. I am missing letters (words) on the right side of the page on this site: http://gathering.tweakers.net/ Seems that the cleartype characters don't get the extra space they need. I didn't try Office or Word, don't have it on my win98 system. But with surfing on the web I didn't encounter resource or memory problems. (348 MB)
  16. Very nice, especially that glossy start-button Thx Marxo!
  17. Not for win98, read the FAQ on the website. KernelEx might work.
  18. Not very handy for reading lots of pages but this one allows editing and printing (no saving). And it prints PDF very good too. http://www.cadkas.de/downengpdf5.php For standard reader I use the ultralight SumatraPDF version 1.6 that works good under Win98 if it's the default PDF reader (so you can dklik on PDF's because the "open" menu doesn't work , later versions don't have a menu at all ). Other downside is that it prints PDF's mirrored on my old HP deskjet. Funny at first and handy for reading around the corner using a mirror but how often do you really do that... Other Win98 (not 95) compatible: http://www.visagesoft.com/products/pdfreader/ Nice GUI, renders ok, but refuses to work together with my alternative mousedriver that I use on win98. Has problems with PDF's containing lots non-standard characters like scientific formulas. However it might be worth a try for those who want something different than old Adobe and Foxit versions.
  19. No it's not. The user manual (PDF ) is very clear about it, Foxit 3.0 is designed and tested for W2K, XP and Vista. You can run it on lower versions but you might encounter problems. That's what Foxit has to say about it, they didn't test win9x functionality so they can't give quarantees or give clear yes or no answers to questions. They can't say yes or no because they simply don't know. The linked threads on the Foxit forum just confirm this. Personally I've had trouble with Foxit since 2.0 on Win98. GDI crashes, high mem usage and refusing to print on my dear, still going strong, HP deskjet 500c.
  20. Latest svn build from ffdshow is compiled with VS 2008 and won't run on win9x. http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.p...lease_id=439904 Current stable version here (last win9x compatible?) : http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941
  21. Unfortunatly Frogaspi doesn't support Win9X. http://www.frogaspi.com/products/frogaspi/faq.htm
  22. More arguments? You give us zero As long as there is no real proof of any bad unofficial updates I simply have to assume that you are wrong. I don't have to proof or argument anything. Remember that any fool can ask more questions than ten wise men can answer. The bare fact that you raise this question doesn't mean that there is any real danger. (please don't understand me wrong, I'm not calling anybody here a fool) You state something here so it's your job to come up with arguments and proof.
  23. Anything unofficial is at your own risk. That first. Second, I have no reason to suspect any unofficial updates to be infected or compromised in some way. I never found anything myself. I'm sure if there is a real reason to be suspicious it would have been posted already together with solid proof. I think that there is no question whatsoever about the reliability of sources like MDGx and Tihiy. Besides, programming something like Uberskin is really not the most efficient way to spread malware or compromise systems. There are less complex ways to do that. And a techie site like MSFN is the wrong place to look for malware victims right But what I don't like is that some "updates" are plugged by their makers without proper information about what the update does and how it must be installed. Advising someone to install your Polish update pack on a English windows is a sin but I've seen it happen. Unofficial is unsupported offcourse. But some things must be clear before I will install it on my system. First I must be sure what the update is doing and why I should (not) have it. A list of changed files scores extra points. Second, system requirements/dependencies must be clear and also the (in)ability to uninstall.
  24. According to MDGx's website (see above) MDAC 1.4 is for Win98se. Perhaps this is the cause.
