98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
noguru replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
It sure is, Santa MDGx throwing Win98 updates down your chimney Thanks! But what to do when you have 98MP10 installed? I took wmasf.dll ver 10.00.00.4060 (27-10-2007) from the XP update which works ok for me. (The version numbers are confusing. I had wmasf.dll 10.00.00.4332 from 3 august 2005 on my system. Is the first 3 a typo?) -
Is my Hard Drive near his death?
noguru replied to Fredledingue's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Unless you are a Eskimo and live in a iglo, no. My WD is supposed to operate between 5°C and 55°C according to their own specs. Don't worry about that. It's not abnormal that a five year old drive gives up. Especially when used a lot. Sometimes it's starts with degrading performance and you can wait (and backup!) for the end to come. Just one power outage can be to much for a old drive. -
What next after Lavasoft/Grisoft drop support for 98 S.E
noguru replied to frogman's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Where do you get that info? The Avira website says something different, that they are going to stop the non-unicode VDF files on 31-12-2007. Just a few weeks to go Sorry that was me with a bad freudian slip. I meant to say that AVAST claim support for 98 which I found out while researching because Avira have stuck two fingers up to their win98 users. Apologies for confusion caused. Don't worry about it. I was using Avira and had to make sure anyway. Avast is keeping up Win9x support for sure when it comes to anti virus-updates. The website is clear about that. However, most new program develpment will be xp/vista only (not all modules run on win98). So it seems that win98 users are stuck with Avast if they want a free AV software that has a background on-access scanner. So despite all the reasons I had not to use Avast before, I decided to install it. (Win98se with all (un)official updates including kernelEx) And I'm not to unhappy with it. I only use the standard on-access scanner. I tried the E-mail and web providers as well but they are huge resource hogs. They still are when you stop them so I uninstalled them totally. I don't want those anyway, the standard background scanner is fine for me. No need to check files before I actually download them. Perhaps this is usefull for people who download warez and cracks on suspicious sites all the time, but for "normal" browsing it's not needed imho. The only problem that I encounter is that after a on-demand scan I loose my icons?? First in the quick-launch bar and menu and later if I don't reboot I loose all, desktop and explorer included. I don't use a skin and disabled the animated tray icon. But it keeps happening from time to time. Personally I can live with this because normally I rarely do on demand scans and if I do I will do it online. It seems pointless to me to do a on-demand scan with the same software that is running in the background already. The detection rate of Avast is not the best compared to Avira or others so a reliable online scan (like Trendmicro, supports win98) might be a good idea when you are in doubt. -

Crashed all the time on my win98se. Older versions used to be ok. But you can try it, since they claim support for win98 it will run on some configs for sure. Unless they really didn't do any tests at all but I don't think so. Where do you get that info? The Avira website says something different, that they are going to stop the non-unicode VDF files on 31-12-2007. Just a few weeks to go On the forum I see one post regarding this matter, a moderater claiming that it might be possible to use VDF files after this date. But he's not sure and doesn't give any more information. He might be hinting to using the unicode VDF files. Installing those files manually might work. But that won't work with the automatic updater so that's a really uncomfortable solution. -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

One little remark, Xnview is not a multimedia tool, it's a picture viewer/converter just like Irfanview. It should be listed there. -
HDD vertically / horizontally installed
noguru replied to hmaster10's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Nice try but at 7200 rpm you will have to much turbulation to have any difference in temperature at all. Mount your drive the way you like. It will die sooner or later in both cases. -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
noguru replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Good topic! Here's my list of Win98 compatible software essentials that have not ben listed yet. All are free. Xnview--http://www.xnview.com/ Xmplayer--http://www.un4seen.com/ Gomplayer --http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html ffdshow--http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow SumatraPDF--http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/ Deepburner--http://www.deepburner.com/ SIW--http://www.gtopala.com/ Maxthon 1.6/2.0--http://www.maxthon.com/ Spybot S&D--http://www.safer-networking.org/ I still use Avira antivirus but support for win98 is ended already and antivirus-updates won't be available anymore in 2008. Not really fit for this list anymore. Xnview is getting more bloated and slower since the 1.9 branche is out. For the same reason I use SumatraPDF and not Foxitreader: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
noguru replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Fredledingue, what language version Win98 do you use? I had the same. At least you're not alone. I rebooted immediatly after install but still. No RP installed, no exotic boot-config. This has happened with my system with the gdi.exe/gdi32.dll update too! I blew another win98se machine with the shell32.dll fix.Somewhere the installer is going very wrong, because there are no files copied. But the originals are renamed to .98o and there you go... Both these machines have a Dutch win98se and all these files have in common that they are kernel-system files. I always install English fixes on my Dutch system without serious issues except for these cases. But nobody ever recommended this, I blame myself. The blown systems can easily be fixed by extracting the files manually from the installer (the files themselves work fine) and copy them to \windir\system\ in real DOS. I learnt my lesson and will have them ready before trying to install the normal way. Sure it would be great if this could be solved in future fixes, but we can't expect the creator of the fixes to test lots of different system-configurations let alone all. -
Considering the fact that you have a PIII I assume that your mainboard is old too. I don't think that your mainboard supports 48bits LBA and you have a 160 GB harddrive! I don't know if this is the cause of your defragmenting problems, but it will cause future problems for sure. If you installed all unofficial updates it should be possible to run your amount of RAM with W98 in most cases. Some people still report problems. Try taking out some memory from your machine and see if you can run defrag. Or try another defragmenter, Diskeeper lite is free and a lot faster anyway. I don't like the Windows defrag, it's slow and the only way that I can defrag my C: drive without constant restarting is in safemode.

Same here, says that 5.7 is already installed. But it does install ok manually, shows up in add/remove programs. I removed it again. Reinstalled 5.6 and then, with a fresh start, installed 5.7 again. Now I don't get the message and it installs automatic. -

Same MSE 5.7 problem here. First refused to install, said that I already had ver5.7. That is not true. I had ver 5.6. I installed manually by rightclicking on .inf. Same result as Tihiy, files in windows/system, but I haven't noticed anything broken. After installing wmp.dll WMP9 stopped working on my machine. Said that I have incorrect version of wmp.dll. So I try reinstalling the update. Installer tells me that I have incorrect WMP version? This did not happen on the first install. I had to reinstall WMP9 tot get it working again. -
Your Health: New Cancer Worries For Diet Soda Drinkers Diet Soda Linked To Heart Risks? I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories (as some of the controversy around aspartame seems to be) but the evidence seems to keep mounting. That first link doesn't work. The second link doesn't proof anything. The key result is that diet or normal soda's don't make any difference. I don't see how that proofs anything about any dangerous effects of aspartame...perhaps you're searching for evidence to hard I totally second what monikermilk said about this subject. Look at the real facts. Cheers!

Make that 5. And thumbs up for Xeno for noticing that this file causes this problem.

From the W9x updates topic:

I have a Dutch Win98se too. I have an English IE 6.0 and a long time ago I installed SESP ver 1.6 in Dutch. After that I installed every available update, official and unofficial, in English. Everything is English now besides the Control Panel. No problems whatsoever, I do understand some English I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be the case with Autopatcher since it contains the same updates. So if you don't mind the English, Autopatcher should be save I think. But to make a system backup just in case is always recommended, no need to mention that right?
-
Antivir has stopped Win98 support already. Antivirus definitions will be updated till 31 dec 2007. After that it's over for Win98. Unfortunatly, because it's very good FREE software.
-
Win98 won't handle 512 Mb ram or more very good. There are a lot's of topic's on this forum about that, search for vcache if you want to know more. But what you need to do is very simple: Add this to system.ini [vcache] MaxFileCache=524288 If you still have problems you can try 393216, this seems to work better for me, I have 512Mb. You can set your video memory in your system BIOS.
-
Your defrag trouble is most probably caused by programs running in the background. System.ini settings will not solve this. Try running defrag in safe mode if closing programs in the background does not work. Or try another defragmenter. Diskeeperlite is free and is a lot faster anyway. But save mode can do the trick if you like\want\must use Windows defrag.

Microsoft Windows 98 to recognize Dual-Core processors (project?)
noguru replied to ohmss006's topic in Windows 9x/ME
i read this and it doesnt really do much it just limits the ram to 512mb when it can be limited to 1gb this is done in usp2.1a also 98se technically i thought could use up to 4gb but 1gb of that cant be used the 1gb is used for irqs i something i think That 4gb is the maximum that a processor with a 32bits adressbus (486+) can adress. For win98 it's not a technical but a theoretical limit Nobody said that Win98 actually supports it. A quick search will give lots of reports of people who claim to have 1gb or more running with win98 but not above 2gb. Win98 uses the upper gb as virtual mem to allocate AGP mem and stuff. Not only irqs, you don't need 1gb for that. -

ASUS comes with a motherboard with onboard RAM
noguru replied to puntoMX's topic in Hardware Hangout
The combo like this is relatively cheap and separate RAM won't be cooled with these very nice heatpipes. I would like to have this board for the looks alone. But if this memory ever fails it can't be replaced! -
Then this must be it I hope. For old versions you go to filehippo: http://www.filehippo.com/download_google_earth/?2366

The installer that came from the link in the topicstart: http://rapidshare.com/files/41808465/GoogleEarth.zip.html Have fun

try http://www.winpack.org/download.php?sekce=5 and files ATI RAdeon 9800 Pro 128 That pack contains a 2003 driver. Do you have any more info on this? I dont think that this is what Xeno86 is asking for.
