Actually OEM versions can be downgraded, but in order to do so you must send M$ the Vista key you are downgrading and they will send you a XP key and invalidate the Vista one. I have done this for a few pc's in my company that came with Vista Business preinstalled and users were not too keen on using it...
I bet there was a file called usb.sys (or alike) that wasn't copied over either.... Reinstall the laptop using a GOOD source and check again. Good luck!
The CD you are using to install is either badly scratched or poorly written. Try with a brand new copy and see if the issues are still persistent. PS. You might want to take hint of this post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mp;#entry690164
First off, it's Riptide, not Ripide. And a search on google came up with this: http://www.topmarket.co.il/index.php?produ...8909828406ca37c and this: http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/213124/r...e-download.html
Stay away as much as you can from the BIOS update windows utility. The best way to update the BIOS is to download on a floppy / USB stick the necessary files and run the update in pure DOS mode. As to the original question, as the others have said, you *should* be safe.
2 things I just want to note about: 1. I ain't computer illiterate, meaning that I know what right click and save target as means... 2. Do you know what capital letters mean? Shouting. Do you think it was really necessary to shout at me? May I remind you that this forum has some rules that you should read before posting?
I personally haven't used AutoPatcher, but I can imagine how much of a PITA must be for users with a dial-up connection to keep up to date their OS.... Shame, Microsoft, shame on you!!!
