  1. HI guys, If i do the "winnt32.exe /makelocalsource /noreboot /syspart:e tempdrive:e /unattend:winnt.sif" in a command line it works fine but after i restart the computer and boot with the drive where i just did this installation at, the setup goes in a loop at the first stage (the Text-mode Setup). I runs fine, the harddisk is FAT32 and setup converts it to NTFS, copies all the folders and files but after the reboot it does the same thing again. It looks like there is a file missing that tell setup to go to the second stage (the GUI-mode Setup). Does anyone have an idea what that file might be? Thanks
  2. 1: Yes i have used Nlite to make the image. (1 year ago) 2: I have not set policies yet. It didn't work before we went over to AD either. So you recon that all users that are NOT local administrator are normally allowed to install USB drivers? We are using XP Pro and not Vista. I thought this was a very common problem and that is was fixed in Vista's new Group Policies. (Not that i have done that much study in VISTA yet ) If it is a policy, which one is it? Thanks
  3. HI guys, I was wondering what the best practice is in the following case. I work for a compagny where we have now (finally) moved everything over to AD and because nobody is local admin anymore, they cant install USB devices such as mice or USB drives. it makes my life a lot easyer if i dont have to type in the admin password every time they change the USB port. Does anyone know how we can let people install the drivers without making them local administrator (or give them the admin password?) I know one sollution is to set group policies and make the user local admin but resrict everything with policies. That is an option but i'm sure there must be a better / different way. Thanks!
  4. I dont think that is the best way though! In my case, windows does a full installation from the hard drive and will install several updates and programes in +/-20 minutes. No problems with the HAL. If you leave the computername, domain / workgroup option out of the WINNT.SIF file you can join a computer to the domain with a personal computername. Thats the only time you have to hit enter the rest is automatic.
  5. I found a way to do it. - Make an unattended install like in MSFN unattended - change in the winnt.sif file the OemFilesPath or copy the $OEM$ folder in your i386 folder. - PLace a second HDD in your computer and make two partitions. The first one is a little bit bigger then the size of the installation files. (4 GB was in my case enough). Format this drive as NTFS. - Open a command prompt in windows and go to the i386 folder on you unattended cd. - type in WINNT32.exe /makelocalsource /noreboot /syspart:[driveletter] /tempdrive[driveletter] /unattend:winnt.sif. Driveletter is the letter of the drive you just formatted. (type winnt32.exe /? for help) - place the HDD in a new computer and boot. - After the first reboot, shut down the computer and make a ghost image. It works for me!!
  6. I have the same prob. I made a perfect working Silent install of Win XP but it'sn not realy handy if you have to image 10 pc's. My thought was; make an image after Windows setup does the first reboot, but if i test this image, setup asks for the installation cd in drive D and is looking for Asms I'm sure you can change this somewere and let setup look for the i386\Asms folder on the harddrive but don't know where to find this. Setup is copying al the files to the harddrive so it makes sense that you dont need the cd anymore... I know it is possible because i've seen it working somewhere else but, unfortunatly, I cant ask them how they did it. Any idea someone?
