  1. You mean one that's "free" (as in beer), right? I googled dvd to avi "windows 98"and got a google-load of hits but don't know if "free to use forever at no charge"...
  2. AFAICR (and could be wrong) a "shortcut" is "created" in "Recent Documents" (whatever) to any file you may have accessed on a Floppy, and the OS will "look for it". Clearing the "Recent" takes care of it -or- deleting the entry(ies) in that User's "Recent" Folder. Of course, my memory may be failing on that.
  3. Congratulations! You just confused 99% of the MSFN user community. Folks, unless you're running Mainframe IBM DOS/VSE-AF or IBM OS/VS-MVS (and their newer versions) don't bother asking for the aforementioned non-HomeComputer software. Pretty sure nobody here has an Amdahl sitting in their basement. Old Skool!
  4. Need I say more?
  5. And Flashget can be set as the Default Downloader within Internet Explorer. Also within Firefox with the FlashGot Add-On (not sure about older 98SE-compatible versions of FF without KeX).
  6. About KB905495 (which you didn't install because you insisted on the IE6 No-SP version). https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms05-044 "Non-Affected Software: Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME)" You might also look at this. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/62633-you-like-to-install-updates-from-original-installation-files/page-2 IOW, the *recommended" *newer* one (for IE6SP1) was never issued by MS, but was "created" using "official" (e.g. XP-SP1) files. So, if you so desire to *not* install the "Unofficial" it's up to you. *However* the sole purpose of them is to get you up-to-date BEYOND what MS was willing to give. Kind of like getting XP-Embedded updates for XP-SP3 EOL. *BE AWARE* that *many* Unofficial (maybe most) are what's called "BACK PORT" Updates (using newer OS files in an older OS). Don't ssuppose you noticed where so many Unofficial ones are located (hint - MDGx website)? Have fun stumbling through your glitches. You see, here on MSFN... Been there, done that, hence the SP's and AutoPatcher.
  7. I have no experience with UEFI (have a laptop that does *not* do anything but light the power light) *BUT* http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1839787 Read the thread. Also note that there should be (normally) TWO boot image entries, first one is ETFSboot (El Torito) and the other would be for EFI boot. Was that specified? (late edit to fix the above link, quoted text)
  8. To each their own. Vinifera wishes to alter, my preference is a simple integrate. Be aware that if you manually alter as Vinifera does, you had dang well better know *exactly* what you're doing.
  9. Meanwwhile, XP still gets Updates, albeit it takes some sleight of hand to get there. Notwithstanding the KB articles magically disappearing.
  10. MalwareBytes - Last Used May, 2009. A lie! I've used it many times since.
  11. Not quite sure I get this. Using your logic, one might go back and get the "obsolete" updates in this list as well as the "replacement" ones and install them all? http://xdot.tk/ I would have made a lousy Systems person back when I maintained IBM Mainframes, ignoring the latest Update Tapes and instead using the older broken Updates.
  12. Run nLite and see if it changes?
  13. Have you really looked at this? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/84886-the-complete-list-of-hotfixes-updates-for-windows-98se/ Why do you want to install something that has a replacement/newer?
  14. (Le Sigh...) KB3102810 for Windows 7 SP1 KB3112343 for Windows 7 SP1 Sadly, you're Fresh Win7 will go on for-EVER during Windows Update. Two posts - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174869-svchostexe-cpu-hogging/#entry1113671 http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174439-windows-7-x64-home-premium-update-problem/#entry1113655 Yes, I had to or ELSE forget about Windows Update. I blame magicandre1981... http://www.christian-reincarnation.com/Win10E.htm However (as I soon found out) http://www.askwoody.com/2015/kb-3102810-booby-trapped/#comment-64914 And the second one - http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/173330-Today-s-new-Windows-Updates-KB3112343-on-Win-7-Pro-machine Notice that *just* WUA v320 does *not* "fix" your Install for Updates and you *still* get clobbered. I'm guessing MS is kind of screwing everyone in spite of the fact that Win7 is being supported until 2020. Side note - and that was all on a fresh Win7SP1u on a Core 2 Duo 3ghz and 4gb RAM. 50% svchost for an SCCM fix? WTF are they doing there? And WTF dows an SCCM fix have to do with Win7? Are they USING it now to push Updates out? Yeah, a wee bit afraid to hook my Dell OEM up now (not the same PC). I suppose I'll have to uninstall that "fix" now to see if it goes into a tizzy again? Didn't note this thread on either of the above two posts either (dad-gum it!). </rant>
  15. Well, the Conexant "General Purpose" may *not* actually work on your particular Modem. I found that out the hard way. If you can get the Ven/Dev values for it (out of the Registry -or- Free Everest v2.20.405 Home Edition), I *might* actually have the *correct* one. IOW, don't trust that "generic" one to work for *all* Conexant modems (been there, done that)! Trust me on this. re - the rest of your post.... M-kay...
  16. LOL!!!! http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174439-windows-7-x64-home-premium-update-problem/#entry1113655
  17. Is that the actual ISO or is that the Extracted ISO?
  18. Curious... did you slip the SP2 for x64 into the ISO? (Yes, I said SP2...) http://news.softpedia.com/news/64-Bit-Windows-XP-Service-Pack-3-73982.shtml I have yet to try the x64 but it *appears* it has newer drivers, including that particular one. The Executable SP2 only. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17791 The ISO, which contains both the above plus Updated "Support" folder/files. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6905 And next would be to get all the Post-SP2 Updates (they are still to be had).
  19. AAARGGGG!!! (This is to tag this Topic as I currently have a disassembled Asus X55C that rrefused to do anything re - get into BIOS, power light on but nada...)
  20. Um...NO! "q314941" may have those versions, but it is SPECIFICALLY for Win98!From the INF - So, it had a "problem" and you're ignoring stuff by simply looking at Versions of the files. In addition, there *ARE* CAT-files for Hardware Drivers, not just Software. You'' find that these also relate to Driver Signing. Finally, DUN has absolutely nothing to do with Modem Drivers. And "q285189 (5/10/2001)" is absolutely NEWER than what's provided with 98SE. If you do a binary compare, you *will* find they are DIFFERENT! Trust me on this. There's even a Topic about MS' stupid version schema that "fools" you, even to the point of having an older Version# for a NEWER file! Side note: Here, also, is that HSF Modem CAB file for WinME. http://driverzone.com/%7B053f0556-8540-44cd-a02a-32ae26623425%7D BTW, I have (and had, now recycled) many a Conexant (and ZOOM, CommWave, PCTel, ...) Modem and have quite a collection of old Drivers. "If anyone needs them".
  21. Hmm... FYI, I installed a fresh Win7 x86 w/sp1U using Manual Update and GUESS WHAT? Windows Update downloaded and installed the above WUA, then just ran and ran and ran and... (you get the idea). Exiting and rebooting and try, try again, but still goes to The Never Ending Story. Well, after I did THIS (see our friend magicandre1981's post) Lo and Behold! Within a few minutes! http://superuser.com/questions/951960/windows-7-sp1-windows-update-stuck-checking-for-updates Please NOTE that BEFORE you install the Update, you MUST reboot to STOP WU from running. THEN install said update. Seems that just "exiting" the screen leaves it in perpetual "stuck". So... 1 - Fresh Install (AutoUpdate Off) 2 - Install WUA v320 3 - Install the linked KB 4 - Reboot 5 - Voila! Thanks, MS for screwing up something else. And thanks, Magicandre1981 for the fix. Side note - I found the same "fix" here - http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/347490-windows-7-update-stuck-checking-updates-2.html http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/385734-update-issues.html#post3177298 http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/381224-windows-7-sp1-update-stuck-checking-updates.html but the explanations got stupid. The first link was pretty clear. HTH (it sure fixed me...) edit - Task Manager showed "svchost" at 50% CPU, idle 50% during "stuck" (3ghz Core 2 Duo). <-FYI
  22. Uhhhh... Isn't that Warez? Rule#1, right here - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=forums&module=extras&section=boardrules You might want to reconsider this Topic.
  23. @JorgeA - C'mon, dude! Didn't I say Windows 7 is already installed? Otherwise, how could they be "downgraded" to WinX? "From my cold, dead hands..."
  24. Not just "Updates" but also Hardware. And (sorry) I don't know how, but, jeez, they're so small... why bother?
  25. 1 - I'm retired on a fixed income (Social Security). 2 - My Brother is a sometimes house painter and bar musician ("big bucks"). Care to donate $400 to each of us poor folk?
