  1. Off-the-wall... Have you tried uninstalling both the old and the new, rebooting, let it "find" it, then tell it where ("I will select")? You are an Administrator, right? (check the "permissions"...)
  2. A "redistributable" is a complete package generally intended for (as you stated) but good for single-pc use nonetheless. Select the appropriate one, save it somewhere, and run it. Should be no problem... A point... It appears that it's generally used in conjunction with the associated SDK for creating 4.5 packages. You may or may not "need" it, but it shouldn't hurt (take a checkpoint for insurance). Otherwise, don't bother (it is, however in RyanVM's set). versions more info edit - thx, cluberti (next post) for clarification...
  3. dencorso is giving you instructions for not-XP... Replace the folder name specified in step#1 with "C:\Windows\SYSTEM32" (this folder is in the "path") and use all other instructions accordingly. On not-XP it's the functional equivalent (in-the-path). I did the same thing on an XP-type system... BTW, the equivalent of DOS-box in XP is found in All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt Open it, enter the following - CD "C:\Program Files\-theacrobatfoldername-" and continue from there. (change above foldername to the foldername of the Adobe in question and use full quotes for folder name). Everything else is the same. p.s. when awaiting a response within a topic, just press "Refresh" in the IE to get the "newer/updated" screen...
  4. Umm, against the rules...You can get it here.
  5. Once they're "tagged" by AU, it's difficult to stop them. If after the updates finally complete then there's a way to "nuke" the folders. Usually (AFAICR), after updates finally stop, you should be able to just delete them as the "inuse" should be reset. I had inadvertantly test-installed an XP with AU "on" and had a "floater" that (AFAICR) I was able to delete later (maybe "safe mode"?). (Note - turned it "off" during the Auto-downloads as well). Err, maybe someone with Vista can help (don't have/not installed). edit - there's a "special folder" in the Windows directory (SoftwareDistribution) that retains the AU info... the Download goes to there then executes creating the "floaters" which usually disappear after completion and the "uninstall" info is placed in the Windows folder as individual "uninstall" folders.
  6. 1 - Do not, repeat do not, mention that CD again! It's considered "warez" (read the rules and consider this a non-Moderator warning) 2 - You appear to be referring to the Avira Personal (which is fine) Have you by chance tried what I suggested! Google on "ntfs4dos" and the very first thing that shows is (guess what?)... RTM, ok??? The official download FULL PACKAGE is there and the PDF document on how-to-use. Go from there... (jaclaz beat me to it...)
  7. "C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND"... just a variable insertion (for Windows 9x, not NT/XP-etc). AFAIK, you can use the "PATCH.EXE" from any folder, the significance of placing the progam there is for direct access. You could just simply place it in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32" for an NT/XP system. The point is to make sure that all the paths for the files/folders are correctly inserted during execution.edit - haven't looked at this lately, so you may need to (if this is what you are using) alter the BAT file accordingly...
  8. @Fernando - FYI Dell has an "option" of using Direct Download or Download Manager (ya gotta look real close).
  9. Automatic Updates... it's "turned on" and is downloading/installing and will refuse to stop until completed, even with reboot as it's considered a "pending update". Not a problem, just let them complete and the folders will "disappear". If any fail, then you have a problem... You can always change the setting (read up on it and how it works). I just leave mine "turned off" so it doesn't happen and regularly manually check. HTH (report back if there's a problem... resolutions are usually available) edit - the reason the USB drive is being "selected" is AU "finds" the HDD with the largest free space available, same as an Initial Install selects where to put the Page File. Better leave it connected until updates are completed to keep from horking the AU up...
  10. Search (google) "Live XP" + Bootland. They have a way of creating a PE from your regular install to create a PE that may also include a utility to do just that! You may have to sign up (same as MSFN)... jaclaz is a regular there too... HTH edit (wiki-wiki...) - Dunno about the "loading" problem. Is the HDD you're trying it with older?edit2 (goooogle) - Maybe drive-locked? Maybe the version you're using as well? Also, if it's a SATA, you may need the drivers in your WinPE to even see it! edit3 (uh-oh! from the ReadMe!) - So, there ya go! No-fly-zone!!!
  11. Not unless someone can figure out how to "Install Protocol - IPv6" in an unsupported OpSys. Note that this is done in the Properties page, so my guess is probably not...
  12. UL download may be corrupted. Try downloading again.
  13. Exact message and configuration please... Initial indication is definitely a "name" error or even (according to MS) the use of Internet Connection Sharing. Configuration info includes the setup in Kerio, the setup at DynDns, and the setup in Outlook. You may change the "real" names accordingly if you prefer (no need to know actual names), e.g. "myname.com" instead of "actualname.com" Whether I can help or not doesn't matter, as others may be able to provided complete info is given.
  14. "Unauthorized" - "30 day expired" = not activated, correct? Several problems may exist with reloading the original 98SE, so before going further, are there any original 98SE restore CD's available? If not, one might hope that it was an "upgrade" and the 98SE Install files exist in the Windows\Options\Cabs folder. If the HDD was converted to NTFS, using a Emergency Boot Floppy won't work. So... to start with, go to Bootdisks.com and get 98SE (or Windows ME may be better) Floppy Image, create a Floppy, and boot the other PC with it. If you can read the C-drive, there might be salvation, if any of the old RBxxx.CAB files (needed to get the 98SE key) and the CABS folder still exist. Note that anything other than the Operating System (after reinstall) may be lost. For that matter, if the original PC has the COA appended (having the Product Key), then you could possibly get the CAB (Install) files from your PC (I note you run 98SE) onto a CD and reinstall from it (still need the Boot Floppy). Means you will have to "blow away" the partition if it was converted to NTFS. Please note that there are extraneous files usually in the CAB folder that you do not want. (more on that later).
  15. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make two assumptions - - You want to load an NTFS-accessing program before Windows starts up, is this true? - You are using the Avira Personal v1.9, correct? Have you looked at the PDF documentation? You may be "hanging" startup by your methods. Please attach your Autoexec.BAT and Config.Sys to your next post, as these are the only two ways it can possibly be run (AFAICT). You need to start the COMMAND.COM as the "shell" (as stated in the PDF, also AFAICT). Perhaps I misunderstand your intent. Why load a DOS version at all just to say that Windows doesn't start? Is there a particular reason to have a DOS-mode one? Are you trying to access an NTFS partition before Windows loads? I could download/test and "make it work" if I knew the intent and info as to "what you did"/"how you did it" that's stopping it from "working" and what the exact "symptoms" are. Could be any number of reasons for "not working". Otherwise, I'm at a loss... To paraphrase another member, Crystal Ball not working so well today...
  16. ? why are you using that version ??? This topic... (and particularly post#21 which point to a perfectly functional Windows interface). Use the above instead... HTH
  17. There is one version of Virtual PC that does run on 98, Connectix 5.1. When MS got it, they took 9X compatibility away.I stand corrected (pre-MS and I was referring to post-MS). So good-to-go on that score...
  18. No upgrade with OEM version - clean install only - see here and do some more checking. Some folks "claim" that an OEM can be"changed" using a modified setup file, but it does not repeat does not work. I don't think anyone knowledgeable can dispute this except to say "if you replace yada-yada files..." (not necessarily "legal"). The MS link you provided is not in reference to OEM but in reference to Retail or Upgrade only. Sorry, but it's a fact... (google it and you'll see). If you would like to retain your old settings and have plenty of time to do so, I would suggest (which will work) repartitioning your HDD and "clean installing" on the second partition or try what I suggested above. You can reinstall XP as many times as you like as long as you don't activate. You will still have to make note of all old settings, tweaks, etc, and reinstall all of your favorite software. (Been there, done that...) HTH (see dencorso's comments as well, sans "upgrade"...) edit - to any folks that post in this topic, remember what this topic is about, so please be kind and don't waste anyone's time with "this over that and I prefer..." since the OP has already stated what's been decided upon.
  19. Then download/run Spybot and Malwarebytes to assist in eliminating. Don't log off unless the Eliminators say so (best run while in Safe mode). (should be moved to Malware Prevention)
  20. ? Remnants ? Impossible, unless a "hidden" partition! Tried a LiveLinux? I have a "basic" one (Gparted Live) that can even find and destroy them!
  21. Must do clean install; no upgrade possible. If you mean "will it", yes; if you mean "keep it", no as you must install clean. Try it with a VPC "test case" (just don't activate the Guest as you have 30 days). 3-4gb HDD+128mbRAM is enough. If you mean thumbnails, still there.Essentially, XP is a beefed-up 2000 so you lose no functionalities whatsoever. Turn off Automatic updates immediately after install (in the Control Panel) to allow time to get the SP3 on or it will download the "express" version on you before you can blink (if connected to the internet). Go to Windows Update, select "Custom" and de-select each time IE7 and IE8 and let the others install or simply get them all from other sources (i.e. the MSFN list, WUD, or AutoPatcher) and manually install. Pick either IE7 or IE8 and set the other to "don't show me this again" (hide) as you choose, or "hide" both and install FireFox or another as you choose. Turn AU back on (or not). My ramblings... browse away and enjoy! You still have time left before support fully ends! (side note: I did notice slight improvements with SP3; and you may look into nLite etc, as you may already know.)
  22. Home Networking Wizard... (press F1 from desktop and "search" for more info on what to do on each or just the primary PC). Be aware of the security risks that may be present during the setup for the wireless part.
  23. Not with Virtual PC, maybe another VM-system, since VPC only runs on NT-type (Win2k and above). Just a correction to prevent confusion...
  24. ? VPC uses pre-defined VHD "virtual disks" (EIDE, nothing special). Did you define them in the VMC?
