Get error on Memtest86 - How to solve the issue?
submix8c replied to persson121's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Ummm.... I supplied info about the Service Manual, the CPU, and the fact that PROBABLY PC100 will work fine, PROVIDING they are compatible. That "link" is specifically to an MT-version of the PC. The OP never said it was that, the poster giving the link assumed that. Thanks for providing a quote from a known linked-to PDF though... A big list of Manuals, etc. -
WD5000AAKX-001CAO Caviar Blue
submix8c replied to michael chiklis's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Your same post here (just so everyone else knows)... http://forum.hddguru.com/wd5000aakx-001cao-caviar-blue-slow-sectors-issue-t23312.html edit - and found this http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=42603 You do realize that that SATA comes in 3 flavors? SATA-I, SATA-II, and SATA-III - yours is SATA-III. More info. So.... if you hooked it up to a SATA-I controller, it's no wonder! Apparently, the Specs say that a Jumper has to be used to set it to SATA-II, but nothing about SATA-I....and you didn't say what the MotherBoard/PC is. edit - DANG IT - the Jumper settings. Specs and Jumpers. -
OK... an FYI on XP Mode and Shared Drives Copying a File or Folder / Sharing / Mapping And looking more closely, you are using XP Mode (and the NEWER "Windows Virtual PC") which has some unique features, as opposed to simply a Guest installed on a Virtual PC. Apparently, you can literally install an XP-supported software in XP Mode and run it from Windows 7 (actually runs within the XP). As far as I can tell... Also Where Hard Drives Appear in XP Mode. So... looking at Link#1 you should be able to (theoretically) map a Drive to a Shared Folder. Notice that Shared Folders appear in Network Neighborhood. If the XP and Win7 "see" each other and appropriate Permissions and UserID/Passwords are used, you should be able to Map to it. I believe that this is the way the "older" VPC2k4/2k7 works - share a folder, by default a drive is mapped to it - just a more straight-forward interface... VPC for Dummies - like me (except I like the Shares method better). HTH Note to anyone reading this. I may have to edit/correct whenever I get around to testing all of this on my other PC.

That has both a "yes" and "no" answer (as I explained). You have a relatively good chance of catching them "slaved" but some are really smart. Deleting the contents of "TEMP" and "Temporary Internet Files" is also a good idea. Searching for any odd-named files (you need to know what to look for) in Windows Folder and Subfolders (particularly System32) the searching on that name sometimes help to find a "hiding" one.I personally normally use 4 basic tools - AntiVirus, SpyBot, MalwareBytes, and CCleaner. I do NOT use the "registry cleaner" of CCleaner but include the TEMP folders in the Options and run it pretty much before each shut-down. I've only been almost hit twice by "drive-by's" (MySpace and Facebook one each). Had a booger of a time ensuring the darn things were gone (both cases were bogus ScareWare AntiVirus). If you DO get hit (badly), do the "slave" trick, download the 3 free softwares I mentioned (in addition to a good AntiVirus), replace the HDD, boot and install/update/run each. Good chance of eliminating it except for boogers which take more research on "how to eradicate"... HTH Side note - apparently the latest SpyBot will allow for a Reboot/Rescan-On-Signon (before your user startup but after System Startup) to eliminate anything "in memory". Found that out last night on Daughter's unprotected Laptop...

Get error on Memtest86 - How to solve the issue?
submix8c replied to persson121's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Mmmm... My old ones were Vectra VL's... Google this exactly as you see it - "vectra ve 5/xxx series 4" manual These are the specific manuals. In the Technical Reference Manual it states The Switches 1-4 in the Table mentioned only speak of 66mhz FSB, so either PC66 or compatible PC100... CPU-World bears this out as well for a Pentium 200mhz... -
Good! Glad you got it (more or less) resolved. This is the method I use (and using VPC's "Shared Folders" also works). I also now see why we aren't quite speaking "the same language".... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/features/compare.aspx I've been using Virtual PC 2007 - You have been using Windows Virtual PC. Similar but not necessarily the same. The terminology and functionality is different. BTW, something interesting... Open a "<anyname>.VMC" with Notepad/Notepad++. Be amazed but BEWARE fiddling with it.

submix8c replied to persson121's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Hmmm... is that a 66mhz FSB? I believe it is (had two of those old Vectras - gone now). You'll probably need PC100 compatible for PC66... Not all PC100 are backwards compatible, whereas most PC133 are backwards compatible to PC100 (and sometimes PC66). You'll get those kind of errors if they are "wrong". Good luck... -
1 Q (one found so far - want more?) 2 Q - I SAID that it's FORBIDDEN! Go Ban Yourself - I choose not to do the same. (one place is in the registry) 3 Q - some basic info here Got a problem with him? Bah!!! Done with you...edit - Goodbye...edit2 - and for the record... I put "link" to the facebook page and "promoted" (NOT!) your release there on mine!!!! (OOOPS!!! jaclaz! naughty-naughty!)
-
I realize that... but the limitation is still based on the MoBo, no matter how you slice it (in my feeble understanding). As I said (AFAIK), change MoBo's to a better one (FSB, CPU, RAM, etc.) and watch throughput increase.... So, your point is? I gave my input...

WinPE (bartpe/minipe whatever) WITH NO RAMDRIVE
submix8c replied to clockworkAngel's topic in Windows PE
Eh... could be wrong... A$$-U-MED that since "My Computer" was on Desktop and "Weird OEM Info" was also displayed that it may have been (there's an option somewhere there to allow for it - I turn it off). I imagine a savvy bloke could "roll their own" PE1.x manually from a PE1.x from MSDN/OEM Partner (not a lot of fun either - tried it... or maybe via BartPE, which I don't use). However, the point is still... Bad JuJuWarez! Attempt to make your own (by whatever means) with your XP CD and we'll be glad to help. I personally don't want to delve into "fixing" a torrent PE (which STILL has proprietary not-yours MS XP in it) to allow for booting from HDD instead of RAM. I have WinBuilder LiveXP and have all of the Bootable variations (very handy) which I, of course, BUILT from an XP CD. Sure I could "help" you but choose not to - not under the circumstances... I'm pretty sure nobody else will either. It would require KNOWING what's "inside" the torrent-Image - and I DON'T want to know. C-ya l8tr (google on BartPE as well...) -
BWAHAHAHAH!!! Look at the top - We have "Search" and all kinds of info doing exactly those items! First place to look is here... Oh, BTW changing "XP Home" to "XP Pro" is forbidden! There are "tools" on the internet to do just that on-the-fly (and are considered warez)... Even more "exciting" is that it's in the Registry. It doesn't TRULY change it to Pro... just "tricks" it. I'm sure jaclaz will be here soon to spank you... Please continue...

Windows 2000 on a Acer Aspire One AO532h
submix8c replied to Agorima's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Nu-uh... you have to run that before nLite is run. The commands (as described) are within a CMD file that you must run first. The links given were the "how-to" to "alter" SETUPREG.HIV pre-nLite. (see post #37 of the link given). -
How odd... I don't want to fiddle with mine too much until I back it up first, but there is a TIP given that claims that changing Themes will "reset" the "Advanced" items you may have fiddled with back to "defaults". I haven't tried it yet. FWIW, without "fiddling much" I use (after Fresh Install) "Taskbar And Start Menu" the "Classic" Mode and did NOT change my Display Properties (except "Settings" for Resolution and Color) and it "automagically" defaults to "Windows Classic" under "Appearance" and no other selection shows. I also use in Explorer "Folder Options" the setting "Use Windows Classic". In that case (above, and why I said "How odd") Desktop->right-click->mouse-over "New" Gives white-on-blue. Desktop->right-click->mouse-over "New"->mouse-over "anything" Gives white-on-blue. When the mouse is NOT "over" it's black-on-grey (NOT black-on-darkblue). When I actually SELECT "Text Document" it creates one on the Desktop with White-On-Blue description. Do you use any "tweaking" like e.g. WindowBlinds? Have you set any "Accessibility Options" in "Control Panel" for Display? Try the "TIP" to see if it does reset (apply, then put back to your preferred Theme then apply).

WinPE (bartpe/minipe whatever) WITH NO RAMDRIVE
submix8c replied to clockworkAngel's topic in Windows PE
I would venture to say that this is a LiveXP... Might is suggest that since that you look into Winbuilder (and note the link to Reboot) and "roll your own" the legal way. The one you currently have already contains WinXP files (warez) undoubtedly "pre-built" using WinBuilder. "Rolling Your Own" requires that you already own a Legitimate XP CD (WinBuilder just "copies" them from that to the LiveXP). Note that WinPE is a different beast entirely.FYI, there is a vast amount of info on MSFN/Reboot to do all of the things mentioned (Building and booting from HDD/USB/RAM-ISO/RAM-HDD, etc etc). Start from "scratch" and you will get assistance. Otherwise... -
Well, to be fair, you have... SEVEN "likes" for "altering" XP Pro w/SP3 (like we don't know how to do those exact same things). Please continue your charade... waiting for you to post proprietary files or links to said warez.... I SOOOO want a copy!

What is the smalest Windows 7 Edition ?
submix8c replied to ALIENQuake's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
And to think that it's a Sticky in this Sub-forum and you didn't even have to use "Search" facility... Please be kind as to browse around and/or search first and, when creating a topic or asking a question, be very clear as to what you are starting with and what your goal is. Your Original Post begged a lot of questions. Information Extraction... Note that probably not many of us use RT7lite, so be forewarned. The second link given is where your best bet is for any help we can't give. IOW, try here first, if all else fails - go there... -
I say now and say again... FSB FSB FSB (bus speed)!!!! It's the difference between AGP 1x->2x->4x->8x->?x A MOBO with PCI-e will likely be faster than AGP just like AGP is faster than PCI... (note that the Mobo's are better through each phase.) Wiki that will help understand- Yes, more RAM is a definite help but if you put any same-type-card with more RAM onto the same PC, the bus speed does not change... It's the same difference as adding more RAM to a given PC - the CPU/FSB speeds didn't change but you reduced the "choke" of Paging. Note that a GPU=CPU, so yes it will increase BUT the limit will be the FSB (that all-encompassing MOBO speed). Obviously proper drivers will help.So... to alleviate that "limit" - Upgrade!!! You could take CardA off of MoboA and put in MoboB (provided compatibility w/CardA) and the "better" Mobo (CPU/FSB/RAM) will undoubtedly give better results. Please note the Test Results are based upon using the SAME HARDWARE CONFIGURATION between the Two Cards being compared. More input found here...

What is the smalest Windows 7 Edition ?
submix8c replied to ALIENQuake's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
@jaclaz - Hey that's an AutoBody Hammer! I have a tool chest with several variations - one end pounds, the other end stabs! Here is your best answer to the question - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-my/windows7/products/compare?T1=tab15 Yes, you have to "roll your own" after you purchase the one with the features you "need". The Internet is cram packed with even more details on the subject. You want... what? -
Got a link to that info? There's variations of viruses/trojans/worms out there. What your referring to (I think) is those that "hide" themselves until placed into Memory.Viruses have a certain "signature" by which the AntiVirus recognizes it, whether On The HDD or In Memory. If you scan your WHOLE HARD DRIVE off-line, they can usually be found, except those that a smart enough to "self-alter" in order to "hide" and then at StartUp (the Registry RUN/RUNONCE keys) "self-alter" again to Activate. That's why if you DO get one then it MIGHT be a booger to eradicate. In that case, special procedures need to be followed along with sometimes special "eradicator" programs. Nothing (AFAIK) is "failsafe". Sorry, but your question is rather vague in its context.

New to unattended windows creation
submix8c replied to O0o0O0O0o's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Depends on whether it's "made" the same as the XP Home one (with extra "stuff") or a "Recovery CD/DVD Set". Your Other Dell should have (once) had one on it unless it was "wiped" (by you or someone else). The "physical disk" should be like the XP Home one you attached in a previous post, except it will say "XP Pro" and the SP-level. Again, I have the Dell XP Pro w/SP3 CD - that was the one I used to "test" which "files/folders" could be "removed/kept" for your XP Home w/SP2 (you were going to / already did Slipstream SP3 onto it, thus some files were "upgraded", replacing the Dell-specific changes). Mind you, IF the XP Pro CD is of the same type, then certain files would have to be replaced/removed based on what I know of the Contents of the SP3 Full Package (KB936929). It is "possible" to create a CD from them that would be (like I said" EXACTLY like one from a "Generic OEM" Package (usually a 2-cd set) except the 4 key files. The CD could be used for nealy any PC BUT you would have to have the COA key if it's not a Dell PC. Again -YOUR DELL- key is inside another file (not found on OEM Package or any Standard Retail package). In some cases, a PC Manufacturer would supply the CD but not the File "WINNT.SIF" thus forcing you to use the COA key and having to Activate By Phone (the "Generic OEM" Package). If it's more of a "Restore CD" then you may NOT want to wipe the Recover Partitions. For more info on Dell PC's and Restore functions, do a Google search on the words "goodell" and "Dell" (without quotes). Some very valuable info there. That person is "almost" an expert... -
OK... working on these problems... That would probably be (at minimum) the Page File. I suggest (and I don't use it) Disabling "Undo Disks" in the VPC "Settings". I don't see that in my VPC2007, however I'm running on a single-core non-Win7 (host) so maybe that's why doesn't appear that way to me. I DO see in the "Close" box of VPC (NOT the Guest OS "Shutdown") "Save State" (I have never used it). This MIGHT be the equivalent of "hibernate". No, it does not put it in Bridge Mode, AFAIK (a/l on MS' VPC2K7). You have to LITERALLY install a MAC Bridge Miniport driver for Bridges on the Host (AFAIK). I had ONCE used that in combination with a Loopback Adapter and had gotten Local Accesses but I really can't remember how (yet...). So... we're using different VM Software. Still, the concept is the same (apparently). Is this true? Please let me know WHICH you are using so we'll be on the same page... because you said In MS' VirtualPC when you "share" a folder in "Shared Folders" you are able to share a Folder and set a specific Drive Letter (basically, the facility "maps" a drive letter) and set any given one to "Share Every Time". This would "temporarily" get you around the "Direct Share" (on the Host) but won't allow access to the Guest "All Users Shared Folder" from the Host. You would have to use the VPC "Shared Folder" as a go-between.Still working on the Direct Share issue. I am assuming you are NOT using a Router? ISP DSL/Cable Modems have a tendency to allow only ONE PC-Side (the NIC side) IP address to be assigned. As I said, I use a Router and have no problems with defining the Host PC's NIC as the Guest PC's NIC and the Guest OS gets assigned an IP within the range of the Router's DHCP Server values, hence a COMMON set of IP/Subnet/DHCP/DNS assignments (the Guest OS gets one DNS server value from the Internal Router and the other from the external ISP). Will get back with you after experimentation. In the meanwhile, just use the Local "Shared Folders" facility of VPC -or whatever- (as I described above). Note - Loopback Adapters "default" to 10Mbs and is unchangeable. edit - found this info on NAT

Suits me... I was, however, referring to the CD contents (Dell XP Home with SP2) that is specifically for your Dell PC for the purpose of "Pre-Activated" (but "changed" to an "Official" SP3). Side note - it APPEARS that you shouldn't have any problems (based on my check of another OEM XP-SP2) since SP3 "overwrites" certain "OEM modified SP2" INF (etc) files but WILL leave extraneous files behind. Basically, it would have given you "Generic XP Home SP3" as if you'd purchased the OEM CD Package, except the Dell-specific files for Pre-Activate would be there (you already have the "special" key in Original WINNT.SIF). C-ya when you come back for help with your new toy (IF you need it)! (P.S. IF it is a pre-installed XP-Pro, BE CAREFUL not to booger the HDD as to "wipe" a potential Restore Partition - you want to keep that stuff.) -
Turn off Hibernation in the Guest - you're not using a REAL HDD and it WILL be slower in some cases (you are going through an interface/API). Do NOT use NAT... point to your REAL Network Card (may/may not work, depending on whether your Modem will allow assigning another IP - a router in between won't cause that problem). I have a Router so it works fine... (no interface/API involved) Directly Share your Folders according to Win7->XP-Win7 File/Folder Sharing (there will be how-to's her on MSFN). Map your Drives that way or just use the "Network Neighborhood" as usual - that's the way I do it and it is FAST! "Shared Folders (AGAIN!) is going through an Interface/API... Direct Allocation (or NAT, if you must) does NOT. Notice that NAT uses "192.168.1.x" which MAY conflict with a Router (that may use the same IP set).
